With your new Puzzle Master you can . . . · find possible crossword answers when you know only a few letters · find more possible answers by changing letters · find phrases by typing a key word · find possible answers by topics (such as Animals and Theatre) · solve Anagrams · play Crossword Quiz and Anagrams to practice your puzzle solving skills. Puzzle Master contains over 130,000 words from Chambers®. By combining your knowledge with the available crossword solutions, you can solve most crossword puzzle words. This User's Guide shows you how. You can follow its numbered steps by using the examples shown or by using words that interest you. 1 Key Guide Function Keys BACK CLEAR ENTER HELP MORE ON/OFF PHRASE Goes back one step or erases a letter. Clears to the Ready screen. Enters a word or scrolls text to the left. Shows help information. Finds more word choices. Turns Puzzle Master on or off. Searches for phrases including key word. Shows the Topics Menu. Shows the Games Menu. Types a ? to stand for a letter. Types a dash. TOPICS GAMES ? Direction Keys Moves left. Scrolls up a list or darkens the screen contrast at the Ready screen. Scrolls down a list or lightens the screen contrast at the Ready screen. 2 Types a space or moves right. Getting Started 1. Turn your Puzzle Master over. 2. Remove its battery cover. 3. Insert four LR03 batteries (AAA batteries) into the battery compartment. Refer to the diagram in the battery compartment to learn how to insert the batteries. 4. Replace the battery cover. Your Puzzle Master will turn on once the batteries are inserted. A brief demonstration begins once it is turned on. 5. To stop the demonstration press CLEAR. 6. To disable the demonstration, type --D and then press ENTER. Once the demo is disabled, the demonstration will not begin each time you turn the product on. To re-enable the demonstration, type --D. 7. To make the screen lighter or darker, press or several times. Resuming Where You Left Off To extend the battery life, Puzzle Master will automatically shut off within two minutes if you forget to turn it off. When you turn it on again, you return to the last screen that you viewed. 3 Finding Words Puzzle Master helps you find answers to crossword puzzles by finding missing letters. Type a ? in place of each letter that you do not know and let Puzzle Master find all possible matches from its word list. 1. Type a word with ?'s (e.g., ?ALL??Y). To erase a letter, press BACK. To type a space, press . You can type capitals only. 2. Press ENTER to search. A Crossword list appears. 3. Press to scroll down the list of matching words. A ? can stand for a hyphen as well as a letter, as shown here. 4. Press CLEAR when finished. 4 Finding Words Viewing Help Information You can view help information at most screens by pressing HELP. Help information automatically scrolls right on the screen and returns to the place where HELP was pressed. Follow the Arrows The flashing arrows show which arrow keys you can press to view more. What is the Flashing ? Some words belong to one or more topics. When you see the flashing T at the right of the screen, press TOPICS to view the topics with which that word is associated. To learn more about topics, read "Finding Words by Topic" on page 8. 5 Finding More Words If the word you are looking for is not on a Crossword list, press MORE to find more possibilities. When you press MORE, Puzzle Master substitutes a letter for one that you have typed. Try this example. 1. Type a word (e.g., DOT ) and press ENTER. Correct word appears. This means the word was spelled correctly. 2. Press MORE. Note: You can also press MORE from the Ready screen. The lowercase letter is the new letter. 3. Press and to scroll up and down the matches. These are all variations, with one letter changed, of the original word DOT. 4. Press CLEAR when finished. 6 Finding Phrases Puzzle Master can also find phrases that include a key word. 1. Type a word in a phrase (e.g., CAT). 2. Press ENTER to check for correct spelling. 3. Press PHRASE. NOTE: You can also press PHRASE from the Ready screen. While Puzzle Master searches for phrases, a clock may appear. A list of matching phrases appears. 4. Press and the phrases. to scroll up and down 5. Press CLEAR when finished. Correcting Misspellings Puzzle Master can also be used as a spell checker. However, it can correct only those words that are in this crossword list from Chambers®. It may not recognize some commonly used English words. 7 Finding Words by Topic You can even narrow your search by topic. There are close to 200 topics from which to choose. Topics range from Academics to Zoology. 1. Press TOPICS. The Topics menu appears. 2. Type the letters of a topic you want. Puzzle Master finds the topics in alphabetical order. Note: There are no topics starting with the letters K, Q, X, or Y. 3. Press and to scroll up and down the topics. 4. Press ENTER to select the topic. The Ready screen appears with a flashing T. 5. At the Ready screen type your crossword guess with ?'s. 6. Press ENTER. 7. Press and to scroll up and down the Crossword list. 8. Press CLEAR when finished. 8 Finding Words by Topic Another way to find Words by Topic To find a list of the words associated with a specific topic, first select a topic (e.g., Games & sports). Press ENTER. Next enter ?'s to determine how long the words in the list will be (e.g., ????). Press ENTER again. While Puzzle Master searches for words, a clock may appear. A list of matching words appears. Now you can view every word that is four letters long and listed under Games & sports. 9 Setting the Skill Level for Games Puzzle Master includes three games that enhance your crossword puzzle solving skills -- Anagram Solver, Crossword Quiz, and Anagrams. To set the skill level for the games, follow these instructions. 1. Press GAMES. The first time you enter the Games Menu, the message Select a game appears. The message Set Skill Level also appears. Any other time you access the Games Menu, the game you last played appears. Use to view the Set Skill Level option. 2. When the Set Skill Level option appears, press ENTER. The message Pick Skill Level appears. 10 Setting the Skill Level for Games The option, Beginner, also appears. 3. Use or to view the skill level you want - Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. 4. Press ENTER to select the skill level. After the skill level is set, the message Select a game appears. The first game option, Anagram Solver, also appears. Understanding the Skill Level The skill level changes the number of correct guesses required in Anagrams. It changes the number of letters hidden in Crossword Quiz. Anagram Solver is unaffected by the skill level. 11 Playing Anagram Solver Anagram Solver builds words of a minimum size from letters that you enter. 1. Press GAMES, if needed. 2. Use or until you see Anagram Solver. 3. Press ENTER to select it. 4. Type up to 14 letters. You can type a letter more than once. 5. Press ENTER. If the letters you type do not make a word, you see No words. 6. Use and to view the words built from your letters. 7. Press ENTER to play a new round. 12 Playing Crossword Quiz To play Crossword Quiz, you must guess a mystery word. Its topic appears briefly before each round. 1. Press GAMES. 2. Press or until you see Crossword Quiz. 3. Press ENTER to select it. The topic of the mystery word briefly appears. 4. Type letters in place of the ?'s. If you type a letter that is not in the word, you see No, try again. If you guessed a letter correctly, continue to type letters until You win! appears. Your score appears after each round and clears to zero when you exit the game. 5. Press ? to reveal one letter and forfeit the game. 6. Press ENTER to play another round. 7. Press CLEAR when finished. 13 Playing Anagrams Anagrams challenges you to find the anagrams of words. An anagram is a word formed from some or all the letters of another word. 1. Press GAMES, if needed. 2. Press or to see Anagrams and then press ENTER to select it. Note: The number of possible words appears at the right of the screen. 3. Type an anagram and then press ENTER. If the anagram is correct, OK appears. 4. Enter more anagrams. 5. Press ? to rearrange the letters. 6. Use and to see the anagrams that you have already entered, if any. 7. To end the round and see all the anagrams, press ? and then use . 8. Press ENTER to play a new round. 14 About the Batteries This product uses four LR03 batteries (AAA batteries). The battery should be changed when the screen contrast is too light even after adjustment. Important Notes 1. Different types of batteries or new and used batteries are not to be mixed. 2. Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used. 3. Batteries are to be inserted with the correct polarity. 4. Exhausted batteries should be removed. 5. The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited. This unit may change operating modes due to Electro-static Discharge.
