With your Crosswords Puzzle Solver you can . . . · find possible crossword answers when you know only a few letters, · find possible crossword answers when you know most of the letters, · find phrases when you know only one word or a few letters, · find more possible answers by changing one or more letters, · jumble letters to form words for games such as Scrabble®. The Crosswords Puzzle Solver can't solve all your crossword puzzles, but by combining your knowledge with its 250,000 word crossword answer list from Merriam-Webster®, you will find many more answers than you find now. 1 Key Guide MORE JUMBLE PHRS LETTER? MATCH ON \OFF CLEAR Finds more possible answers. Jumbles letters to form words. Finds phrases that include entered word. Stands for an unknown letter. Stands for a series of unknown letters. Turns Crosswords on and off. Clears to Ready. Stands for an unknown letter. Stands for a series of unknown letters. Enters a request. Types a hyphen. Darkens screen contrast at Ready, scrolls up, or types an apostrophe. Lightens screen contrast at Ready, scrolls down, or types a period. Erases a letter or scrolls left. Types a space or scrolls right. ? * ENTER -- 2 Getting Started If you are using this product for the first time, follow these steps to install the batteries, turn the product on and adjust the screen contrast. 1. Slide the battery cover off in the direction of the triangle. 2. Place the four AAA batteries inside the case, following the diagram. 3. Replace the battery cover. 4. Press ON/OFF. A brief demonstration appears. 5. Press CLEAR to stop the demo. Ready appears. 6. Press or repeatedly to adjust the screen contrast. You can adjust the contrast only at Ready. Disabling the Demonstration You probably do not want to view the demonstration every time you turn on this product. To disable the demonstration, type --D and then press ENTER. To reenable it, do the same. 3 Finding Letters Crosswords helps you find answers to crossword puzzles by filling in missing letters. Just type a ? for each unknown letter. To type a ?, press LETTER? or ? . 1. Type a word with ?'s. To erase a letter, press 2. Press ENTER. . 3. Press to view more matches. 4. Press CLEAR when done. Follow the Arrows The flashing arrows at the right of the screen show which arrow keys you can press to view more words. About Automatic Shutoff Don't worry if you forget to turn Crosswords off. If no key is touched within two minutes, Crosswords will shut itself off. 4 Finding Parts of Words To find a series of missing letters in a word, type an asterisk. To type an asterisk, press MATCH or * . There are more matches here because an asterisk can be one letter or several letters. 1. Type a word with V's. 2. Press ENTER. 3. Press to view more matches. 4. Press CLEAR when done. Tips for Finding Words · Use ?'s to find lists of words (e.g., to view four-letter words beginning with a z, enter Z???). · Use both ?'s and V's in a word (e.g., ZVK?). There is no need to type a ? next to a V. 5 Finding Phrases Crosswords can also search for phrases. You need to know only a few of the letters in the phrase. NOTE: Phrases take longer to find because Crosswords must search the entire list of phrases from A to Z. 1. Type a word in a phrase (e.g., CAT). 2. Press PHRS. 3. Press to continue searching. 4. Press CLEAR to stop. Typing Punctuation At Ready, you can type an apostrophe by pressing or a period by pressing . NOTE: These punctuation marks cannot begin a word. 6 Finding More Words If you don't find the answer you were looking for using the ? or * keys, try pressing MORE. Each time you press MORE, Crosswords substitutes letters for one that you've typed. 1. Enter a word with ?'s or V's (e.g., SH?P?). 2. Press to view the matches. 3. Press MORE. The lowercase letter is the new letter. 4. Press to view the new matches. 5. Press MORE again. 6. Press CLEAR when done. 7 Jumbling Letters Jumble scrambles the letters you enter to form words. It can help you with Scrabble®, anagrams, and other word games. 1. Type letters or a word. 2. Press JUMBLE. 3. Press or to choose the minimum word size (e.g., 4). 4. Press ENTER. 5. Press to view the words. 6. Press CLEAR when done. 8 Product Care Cleaning, Storage, Problems To clean, spray a mild glass cleaner onto a cloth and wipe the surface. Do not spray liquids directly on this product. Do not use or store this product in extreme or prolonged heat, cold, humidity, or other adverse conditions. It could damage its circuitry.
