You now own a powerful movie guide that you can take anywhere. MovieViewsTM is designed to help you quickly find the movies that you want to see, in ways that you can't accomplish with a printed book. With your electronic movie guide you can: · find more than 4,000 movies. For each movie, MovieViews details its year of release, running time, critic rating, MPAA rating, cast, plot summary, and more; · search for movies by cast members, directors, or themes; · search for Academy Award winning movies, or movies released in a specific year; · search for movies that fit a number of different categories (e.g., PG movies that star Dustin Hoffman, released before 1980); · place notes to remind you which movies you like or which movies you want to see; · play games that test your movie knowledge; and much more. It's easy to do. This User's Guide shows you how. Have fun! 2 Key Guide BACK CAST CLEAR ENTER GAMES HELP MENU NEXT PREV . ? Returns you to the previous menu or erases letters. Shows the Cast menu. Clears your entry. Selects a menu item or highlights a cast name in movie reviews. Shows the Games menu. Shows help messages for the current screen. Shows the main menu. Goes to the next movie title. Turns the product on or off. Goes to the previous movie title. Shows the full name. Scrolls up or starts a new game. Scrolls down or gives a hint in games. Scrolls left or shows matches. Scrolls right or ends a game. F OF N O 3 Getting Started v v Turning MovieViews On The first time you use MovieViews, a brief demonstration appears automatically. 1. Press ON/OFF . 2. If you want to stop the demo, press . CLEAR Disabling the Demonstration You probably do not want to view the demonstration every time you turn MovieViews on. Here is how to disable the demonstration. 1. Press MENU . 2. Press until Disable Demo is marked. A menu item is marked when the triangle is displayed to the left of that menu item. 3. Press 4. Press ENTER CLEAR to disable it. when done. 4 Getting Started v Viewing the Tutorial MovieViews includes a tutorial that shows a list of the keys and their functions, and gives an overview of the product. 1. Press 2. Press 3. Press 4. Press 5. Press . to mark Tutorial . ENTER . to read text. CLEAR when done. MENU Help is Always at Hand You can view a help message at virtually to any screen by pressing HELP . Press read it. To exit help, press BACK . Resuming Where You Left Off Should you forget to turn off MovieViews, it will automatically shut itself off after a few minutes. Assuming that the demo is turned off, the screen that you last viewed will appear when MovieViews is turned on again. 5 Changing Settings You can change the type size, the shutoff time, and the screen contrast of MovieViews. The type size determines the size of the words, when reading movie reviews and help messages. The shutoff time is how long the product stays on if you forget to turn it off. Set Contrast determines how light or dark the screen is. 1. If not at the menus, press MENU . 2. Press repeatedly to mark Set Type Size, Set Shutoff, or Set Contrast. The indicates that a menu item has subtopics. 3. Press ENTER to select it. 4. Mark a setting. If you select Set Contrast, press or to adjust control. 5. Press ENTER to select it. 6. Press CLEAR when done. 6 Finding a Movie Review MovieViews contains movie reviews for over 5000 movies between 1914 and 1994. Here is how to find a movie by name. Note: All of the lists in MovieViews are alphabetized letter-by-letter, regardless of punctuation. For example, the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is listed before A Change of Seasons. 1. Press CLEAR . You can always return to this list by pressing CLEAR . 2. Begin typing a movie title until it is marked (e.g., BIG). A movie is marked when the triangle is displayed to the left of that movie. Movie titles that begin with an article, such as, a, an, or the, may be listed both with the article (e.g., The Sting) and separate from the article (e.g. Sting, The). 7 Finding a Movie Review 3. Press when it is marked. ENTER 4. Press to read the movie review. 5. Press CLEAR when done. Note: From within the movie review, you can press NEXT to go to the next movie review or PREV to go to the previous one. Another Way to Search for Movie Titles You can also search for movies by typing the first few letters of the movie, and then to move down until the movie pressing title you want is marked. Then press ENTER to view the movie review. Movies Starring the Same Cast Member When reading a movie review, you can view other movies that include the same cast to member. Press ENTER and then press highlight the cast member you want. To turn the highlight off, press BACK . Then press ENTER again to search for the movies that include the highlighted cast member. 8 Finding Movies by Cast With MovieViews you can search for movies that feature one or more specific cast members, as well as many other categories. In this example, we will search for movies that feature Lee Marvin. 1. Press CAST . 2. Begin typing the cast member's name (e.g., Marvin, Lee). Note: Cast members names' should be typed as they appear, with their last name before their first. 3. When the name is marked press ENTER . A check () marks your selection. To deselect a cast member, press ENTER again. 4. Press to view the films staring that cast member. 9 Finding Movies by Cast 5. Select a movie. You can search this list the same way that you would search the main movie list. 6. To return to the Cast menu, press CAST . 7. Press CLEAR when done. Selecting More Than One Cast Member If you check more than one cast member, MovieViews will search for movies that star both cast members. Another Way to Find the Cast Menu You can also go to the list of cast members by pressing MENU and selecting Locate. Next, mark Cast Members, and press ENTER .This is useful only when searching for movies with more than one category (see "Putting it all Together" on p. 17). 10 Locating Movies by Categories You can look for specific movies by narrowing your searches by categories. In the following example we will search for movies that won Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. 1. Press MENU . 2. Select Locate. 3. Select a category (e.g., Awards). 4. Select the subcategory you wish to view (e.g., Adapted Screenplay). 5. Press 6. Press ENTER . to view the matches. 7. Select a movie. 8. Press CLEAR when done. 11 Locating Movies by Categories v v Awards The Awards category lists movies that have won Academy Awards from the twenty-seven major award categories. You can also look for films that received awards in more than one category (e.g., movies that won awards for Best Leading Actress and Best Director). Note: Since all of the Academy Award titles begin with "Best", it has been omitted (e.g., look for Leading Actor instead of Best Leading Actor). Directors The Directors category searches for the person (or persons) who directed the film. You can search by entering the director's last and first names (e.g., Stone, Oliver). You can also search for more than one director, but most movies have only one. By selecting more than one director, MovieViews will look for films directed by both directors. 12 Locating Movies by Categories Theme v v v There are over 550 themes in MovieViews, and most movies have over ten themes each. Themes are the subject matter of the films (e.g., Drama, 19th Century, Robin Hood, etc.). You can look for films that share one or more themes. MPAA Rating The Motion Picture Academy of America (MPAA) rates movies for various audiences using the familiar code of G, PG, R, etc. If you select more than one MPAA rating, MovieViews will search for films that match either rating. Critic Rating You can search for movies by selecting a critic rating. Movies are rated by one to five stars, five being the best. If you choose more than one critic rating, MovieViews will search for films that match either rating. 13 Locating Movies by Year You can search for movies by entering a year or a year range. In the following example we will find movies that were released in 1973. 1. Select Year from the Locate menu. Parentheses indicate the decade column is selected. 2. Press 3. Press 4. Press three times to mark 19<7>0. to select the year column. until 197<3> is marked. Parentheses now indicate the year column is selected. 5. Press 6. Press ENTER . twice to view movies. Selecting a Range of Years First select your starting year, exactly as described above (e.g., 1973 ). Then mark your ending year (e.g., 1976), and press ENTER . All the years in between are selected. 14 Putting It All Together With MovieViews you may fine-tune your searches even further by selecting multiple search items in a single search. The combinations of search items are virtually endless. In this example, we will look for PG-13 movies that star Kevin Costner and were released in 1994. 1. Press CLEAR . 2. Press CAST . 3. Select Costner, Kevin. 4. Press MENU and select Locate. 5. Select MPAA Rating. 6. Select PG-13. 7. Press BACK . 8. Select Year. 9. Press to select the year column. 10. Select 1994 . 11. Press to view the matches. 12. Press CLEAR when done. If No Matches Were Found Some combinations of search items have no matching movies in MovieViews. To deselect an entered search item, mark it and press ENTER . To deselect all your search items, press CLEAR . 15 Placing Notes You can place a personalized note in a movie for quick reference; notes can be used to mark your favorite movies, movies that you want to rent, or recently seen movies . Your notes are marked in . the movie review with a 1. Press N within any movie review. 2. Press ENTER to select Add Note. The highlighted text is the movie title and year of its release. 3. Enter a note. · To use the movie title as the note, press ENTER . · To use your own note, type it and press ENTER . To type a space press .To erase a letter, press BACK . Note: The amount of notes you can add depends upon their length. The smaller the note, the more notes you can add. 16 Viewing & Removing Notes v v Viewing a Note MENU ENTER 1. Press 2. Press and mark List. . Your note list appears. 3. Press to mark a note, if needed. 4. Press ENTER to go to the movie review. 5. Press CLEAR when done. Removing a Note 1. Go to the movie review with the note you want to remove. To find the note you want to remove, select it from your note list. 2. Press N . 3. Press ENTER to select Remove Note. The note is now removed, and you return to the text of the former note. 17 Playing the Games MovieViews has two games that will test your movie knowledge, Hangman and Movie Quiz. 1. Press GAMES . 2. Press or to mark either Hangman or Movie Quiz. 3. Press ENTER to start playing. 4. Select Clear Scores from the Games menu to clear the scores for both Hangman and Movie Quiz. 5. Press CLEAR when done, at any time. v Hangman MovieViews Hangman challenges you to guess a mystery actor or actress, indicated by ?'s, one letter at a time. As you type letters, your correct guesses appear in place of the question marks, and your wrong guesses appear below. The number of guesses remaining appears above the #'s.
