You now own a powerful thesaurus that can be used at home or in school. This Oxford Children's ThesaurusTM will not only help you find over 55,000 thesaurus entries, but it will also help you learn how to spell words, which contain synonyms, related words, and references to other thesaurus entries. In addition, the Oxford Children's Thesaurus has a Personal word list in which you can save up to 40 words for personal use or study. You can even play four exciting games that will help you learn while you have fun. Resuming Where You Left Off If you forget to turn this thesaurus off, it will automatically shut off within two minutes. To return to the last screen that you viewed, press ON/OFF . How to Use Help You can learn what to do at any screen by pressing HELP . If you press HELP at the ready screen, you will view helpful information describing how to use this thesaurus. 3 How to Use the Keys BACK CLEAR ENTER GAMES HELP LIST NEXT ON/OFF PREV ? Backs up or erases letters. Clears the word you entered. Enters or selects a word, selects a game, or scrolls help messages. Shows the games. Shows help messages. Shows your Personal words list. Shows the next thesaurus entry. Turns your Oxford Children's Thesaurus on or off. Shows the previous thesaurus entry. Types a ? to stand for an unknown letter in a word. Types an to stand for a series of unknown letters in a word. Moves up a list, types an accent darkens the screen at the ready screen. Moves down a list or lightens the screen at the ready screen. Erases a letter or moves to the left. Types a space or moves to the right. 4 How to Begin Here is how to start using your Oxford Children's Thesaurus. 1. Turn your thesaurus over. 2. Remove its battery cover. 3. Insert four LR03 batteries (AAA batteries) into the battery compartment. Use the battery diagram in the battery compartment to insert batteries. 4. Put the battery cover back on. The thesaurus will turn on once the batteries are inserted. A brief demonstration begins once it is turned on. 5. Press CLEAR to stop the demonstration. 6. To disable the demonstration, type d and press ENTER . Once the demonstration is disabled, the demonstration will not begin each time you turn the thesaurus on. Type d to re-enable the demonstration . 7. To make the screen lighter or darker, press or several times at the Ready for word screen. You are now ready to begin using your thesaurus. Go to the next page and begin. 5 How to Find Thesaurus Entries Each thesaurus entry can contain synonyms, related words, and references to other thesaurus entries. Try this example. 1. Press CLEAR and type happy. If you need to erase a letter, press or BACK . Note: You cannot type capital letters. Some words in the thesaurus require a space (air force). To type a space press . 2. Press ENTER to view its first thesaurus entry. Press or ENTER to view the whole entry. repeatedly to view all of the 3. Press synonyms that relate to the entry. 4. Press NEXT to go to the next thesaurus entry of the word, if needed. To view a previous thesaurus entry, press PREV . 5. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 6 How to Find Thesaurus Entries Words Without Thesaurus Entries If a word does not have any thesaurus entries, then its correct spelling appears in the word list. The word list contains all of the words that are found in this thesaurus. Use or to move through this list. You can also access this list by pressing and pressing ENTER . A flashing T to the right of a word indicates that a word has one or more thesaurus entries. Press ENTER to view any thesaurus entries. A flashing question mark to the right of a word indicates that a word has Confusables. See "How to Find Confusables for more information. Press ? to view any Confusables. Press CLEAR when you are finished. Accenting Letters You do not need to type accents in your words. But if you want to type an accent, first type the letter to be accented. Then press or until you see the accent you want. 7 How to Find Confusables® Confusables are words that sound alike, are often confused, or are spelled similarly. When you see a question mark flash at the right of the screen, the entered or selected word has two or more Confusables. Try this example. 1. Type wood. 2. Press ENTER . The ? indicates that the word has Confusables. 3. Press ? . 4. Press to view more Confusables. 5. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 8 How to Correct Misspellings The Oxford Children's Thesaurus can improve your spelling by helping you to correct your misspelled words. Here's how. 1. Type garaffe. Press letter. 2. Press or ENTER BACK if you need to erase a . The flashing T indicates that a word has one or more thesaurus entries. 3. Press or until you see the desired word, if necessary 4. If a flashing T appears, press ENTER to see one or more thesaurus entries for that word. 5. Press to view the words in this thesaurus entry. 6. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 9 How to Find a Letter If you are not sure how to spell a word, you can type a question mark in place of each unknown letter. To type a question mark, press ?. You can also type question marks in words to help solve crossword puzzles and similar word games. 1. Type p. 2. Press ? . 3. Type rt. 4. Press ENTER . The matching words appear in alphabetical order. 5. If a flashing T appears, press ENTER to see one or more thesaurus entries for that word. 6. Press to view more matching words. 7. Press ENTER to view the thesaurus entry of a matching word, if available. 8. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 10 How to Find a Series of Letters To find a series of letters, press to type an asterisk in a word. An asterisk stands for a series of letters in a word. Try this example. 1. Type penc. 2. Press . An asterisk will appear at the end of the word penc. 3. Press ENTER . You can type both question marks and asterisks in a word, but there is no reason to type them next to each other. 4. If a flashing T appears, press ENTER to see one or more thesaurus entries for that word. 5. Press many times to view more words that begin with penc. 6. Press ENTER to view the thesaurus entry for a matching word, if any. 7. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 11 How to Save Words You can save up to 40 words in your Personal words list. Your Personal words list is where you can save words for study and review. The list will be saved until you erase it or replace the batteries. 1. Type purpose and press LIST . 2. Press until Add To List appears, and then press ENTER . If you try to add a word that has already been saved to your Personal words list, Already in list appears. If the screen says Not a word, then the word is not found in this thesaurus. To add such a word to your Personal words list, press Y . Press N if you do not want to add the word. When these words are added, a P will appear to the right of the word to indicate that the word is not in this thesaurus. 3. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 12 How to View Your Saved Words After you have saved words to your Personal words list, you can then review them. 1. Press LIST . 2. Press ENTER to select View List. Words are shown in the order they were saved. 3. Press and to view the words in the list. 4. Press CLEAR when you are finished. Deleting a Saved Word To delete a saved word from your Personal words list, first press LIST . Then press to view Delete From List and then press ENTER . Use and to move to the word you want to delete and then press ENTER . Press CLEAR when you are finished. Clearing Your Personal List To delete all of the words from your Personal words list, first press LIST . Next, press to move to Erase List and then press ENTER . Press Y to clear your list. Press N to cancel. 13 Changing the Game Settings You can select the skill level for the games and the words with which you will play the games, before you play. · Skill Level allows you to change the level of difficulty for the games. There are five skill levels; Beginner is the easiest and Wizard is the hardest. · Game Words determines whether the main list or your Personal words list is used in the games. Also, you can choose to enter your own words before each round. 1. Press GAMES . or to move to Skill Level or 2. Press Game Words and then press ENTER . or to move to a setting and 3. Press then press ENTER . You will then return to the Games menu. 14 How to Play the Games This thesaurus has four word games that you can play. Hangman Hangman challenges you to guess a mystery word, indicated by ?'s, by typing its letters one at a time. 1. Press GAMES . or to move to Hangman and 2. Press then press ENTER . An unknown word appears with the number of guesses remaining at the right. 3. Type a letter. Either a question mark will be replaced by the letter or the number of guesses will be reduced by one. 4. To reveal a letter press . 5. To end the round and show the mystery word press ? . 6. If a flashing T appears, press ENTER to see one or more thesaurus entries for that word, once the round is over. to play another round. 7. Press 8. Press CLEAR when you are finished. 15 How to Play the Games Anagrams Anagrams challenges you to find all of the words that can be made from the letters of a given word. Each letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the given word. The minimum word size will appear on the screen before each round begins. 1. Press GAMES . 2. Press or to move to Anagrams and then press ENTER . A word appears with the number of possible anagrams at the right. 3. Type an anagram and then press ENTER . 4. To view the anagrams that you have already entered press . 5. To jumble the letters press . 6. To end the round and show all of the anagrams press ? . or to see all of the possible 7. Press anagrams. 8. If a flashing T appears, press ENTER to see one or more thesaurus entries for that word, once the round is over. 9. Press play another round. 16 How to Play the Games 10. Press CLEAR when you are finished. Jumble In Jumble, you have to decipher jumbled letters to form one or more correctly spelled words. 1. Press GAMES . or to move to Jumble and 2. Press then press ENTER . 3. Type an unscrambled word. If word is correct, You win!! appears and the word is displayed. If the word is incorrect, No, try again appears, and you can to try again. 4. To jumble the letters press ENTER . 5. To end the round and unscramble the word press ? . 6. If a flashing T appears, press ENTER to see one or more thesaurus entries for that word, once the round is over. 17 How to Play the Games 7. Press 8. Press to play another round. when you are finished. CLEAR Flashcards This is an electronic flashcards game. Flashcards flashes words that you can study and then you can find their thesaurus entries. 1. Press GAMES . to move to Flashcards and then 2. Press press ENTER . 3. Study the word that appears. 4.
