INSTALLATION GUIDE Welcome and thank you for purchasing BFD Deluxe Collection! We hope you enjoy working with such an exceptionally recorded drum library. Please read through this guide carefully, as the installation process differs slightly from previous products in the BFD range. The data on the BFD Deluxe Collection DVDs is compressed (using a zero-loss algorithm), to facilitate the delivery of the highest possible detail levels. BFD v1.5 (free upgrade from v1.0) is required to use BFD Deluxe Collection. Windows installation · Each DVD contains an installer specific to the contents of that DVD. Please follow these steps for each DVD after inserting it in your DVD drive: 1. If the installer does not auto-run, explore the DVD contents in My Computer and double-click BFD Deluxe Win Setup.exe to run it. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions and select your BFD folder when prompted. Click Install to proceed. 3. Select a detail level and click Next. BFD Deluxe Collection can be installed with one of three detail levels, determining the maximum amount of velocity layers that are installed for each Kit-Piece on the DVD. This also dictates the amount of hard disk space required. Higher detail levels have a higher impact on system resources. Small: Medium: Deluxe: a maximum of 32 velocity layers will be installed a maximum of 64 velocity layers will be installed a maximum of 128 velocity layers will be installed 4. Enter your BFD Deluxe Collection serial / license number (located on the inside front cover of the digipak containing the DVDs) and click Install. You will only need to enter your serial for the first DVD you install. 2 MacOSX installation · Each DVD contains an installer specific to the contents of that DVD. Please follow these steps for each DVD after inserting it in your drive: 1. Open the DVD contents and double-click BFD Deluxe Mac Setup.pkg. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions until you are asked to select a destination. 3. Select the destination drive (the drive on which your BFD folder resides) and click Choose to select the BFD folder. Click Continue when you've specified the correct folder. 4. Click Install to proceed to next step. 5. Select a detail level and click Next. You will only need to enter your serial for the first DVD you install. Installation of BFD Deluxe Collection can take several hours, as a large amount of data needs to be installed, so please be patient. There are also a number of extra drums and a large assortment of hihats and cymbals (mainly Zildjian). See the listing on page 8 for full details of each Kit-Piece in the collection. Ludwig 1970s Vistalite Ludwig 1960s Mod Orange Ludwig 1965 Club Date The Vistalite is the highly-prized clear plastic kit from the seventies, famous for being used by drummers such as John Bonham. It has two kicks (a 22" and a 24") and 6 toms (the second kick and tom set are loaded into BFD's Mixer Page 2). The Mod Orange kit is a classic premium quality 1960s Ludwig, while the Club Date was part of the lower-priced range. Club Date kits used shells which had slight imperfections, deemed unsuitable for the most expensive Ludwig lines. They also used cheaper hardware which can be slightly noisier. However, they have a unique character all of their own. Gretsch USA Maple Series DW Black Oyster Pearl Sonor Designer Yamaha Pro Tour BackYard Drums protoype The Gretsch, DW, Sonor and Yamaha are some of the best drumkits of recent times, dating from the nineties with the exception of the Sonor, which was made in 2002. Boutique custom drum manufacturer BackYard Drums has been causing quite a stir in drumming circles, and supplied their prototype demo kit for the BFD Deluxe Collection sessions. These sessions, for which the demo kit was flown to Chicago from Los Angeles, represent the first time that these exquisitely engineered drums have been recorded. 4 The acoustic space BFD Deluxe Collection was recorded at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio complex in Chicago. The Studio A drum room used for the recordings is much smaller than the Eldorado Studios drum room featured in BFD and BFD XFL. This gives the Deluxe Collection a tighter and more focused sound than previous BFD material, something which is especially noticeable on the Room channel. The PZM channel in the Deluxe Collection is referred to as `ambience' in this manual, as Altec 150 mics were used instead of PZMs. However, the Altecs still record the same type of ambience for which PZM mics are normally used. They were placed on the floor, so the ambience captured is more biased towards the drums, compared to the Room and Overhead mics which tend to be more sensitive to cymbals. It is a less focused sound than the other mic buses in BFD, useful for subtle reinforcement of size and distance. Mics, placement and channel processing The microphones and preamps used in the Deluxe Collection session also differ from those used to record previous BFD content. Mic placement and processing of certain channels was conducted by Steve Albini, and all mics were routed through the preamps on Electrical Audio's custom Neotek console. The channels were set up as follows: Kick In: Shure SM98 For the Kick In channel, the mic was positioned on the beater side of the head. Kick Out: AKG D112 A Urei 1176 peak limiter was placed in the signal path. Medium attack/release settings were used, while the ratio was set to 8:1. Snare Bottom: Shure SM98 This mic's phase was flipped in relation to the Snare Top mic. 5 Snare Top: Sony C37P An NTI EQ3 was inserted in the signal path, with 1dB of gain at 40Hz and 1dB of gain at 2.5kHz. Hihat: Josephson C42 Hihats were mic'ed with more distance than on the original BFD and BFD XFL sessions. This resulted in less low-end in the recordings compared to previous BFD material. Toms: Josephson e22S Each tom was mic'ed on the top and bottom, with the channels summed on the console. The Josephson e22S side-address cardioid condenser mic was developed in cooperation with Steve Albini. Cymbals: Josephson C609 Similarly to the hihats, cymbals were mic'ed further away than on the original BFD and BFD XFL recordings. The resulting sound has less low frequencies than you may be accustomed to when using BFD. Overhead: Royer R122 The overhead signals were passed through a Urei 1178 dual-channel peak limiter, with medium attack/release and 12:1 ratio settings, and a custom Urei EQ with 6dB rolloff at 10kHz. Room: AKG C24 These were set up in a Mid/Side configuration. The signals were processed by a custom Electrical Audio M/S Decoder Matrix. Ambience (PZM channel): Altec 150 `coke bottles' fitted with 21D capsules These rare mics were placed on the floor, each about 2 ft. from the kick drum, pointing away from the kit. 6 Luxurious levels of detail Up to 128 velocity layers BFD Deluxe Collection's Kit-Pieces are provided with up to 128 velocity layers. The result is an unprecedented level of realism and expressive detail. Cymbals have particularly improved levels of detail compared to previous BFD material. Hyper-detailed hihats and cymbals As in BFD XFL and 8 Bit Kit, the Deluxe Collection hihats feature extra ¼-open and ¾-open position Hit types, in addition to the usual closed, ½-open and open positions found in the original BFD library. Ride cymbals include bell Hits, while the crash and splash cymbals have edge Hits. Both these Hits are played with the Bell Hit type in BFD's cymbal slots. The Deluxe Collection's cymbals are captured with more velocity layers than those on previous BFD recordings. Increased RAM overhead The increased levels of detail cause a significantly higher RAM overhead compared to the content in BFD and even BFD XFL. When using lower amounts of RAM (512MB to 1GB), you can install BFD Deluxe Collection with Small or Medium detail settings, or consult the Performance Tips section in the BFD FAQ for other ways to optimize BFD for lower memory usage: www.fxpansion.com/product-bfd-userFAQ.php Many thanks, The FXpansion team www.fxpansion.com 7 BFD DELUXE COLLECTION: KIT-PIECE LISTING DVD 1 · Bison 14x4" piccolo snare BFD/Data/DLX Bison/Snare Piccolo Size: 845 MB Manufacturer: Bison Model: 14x4" piccolo snare Materials: Heavy die-cast hoops Hit, Drag, Flam, Rim, SS · Ludwig 24" Vistalite kick BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Kick 24 Felt Size: 1348 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 24" Vistalite kick Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Notes: Felt beater Hit, No snare · Sabian 18" AA Fast Chinese BFD/Data/DLX Sabian/China 18 AA Fast Size: 390 MB Manufacturer: Sabian Model: 18" AA Fast Chinese Hit · Ludwig 14" Vistalite snare · Ludwig 22" Vistalite kick BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Kick 22 Felt Size: 1621 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 22" Vistalite kick Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Notes: Felt beater Hit, No snare BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Snare Size: 1256 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 14" Vistalite snare Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit, Drag, Flam, Rim, SS · Ludwig 16" Vistalite low tom · Ludwig 22" Vistalite kick BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Tom Floor Size: 414 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 16" Vistalite low tom Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Kick 22 Rubber Size: 692 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 22" Vistalite kick Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Notes: Rubber beater Hit, No snare · Ludwig 10" Vistalite hi tom BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Tom Hi Size: 277 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 10" Vistalite hi tom Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit 8 · Ludwig 13" Vistalite mid tom BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite/Tom Mid Size: 289 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 13" Vistalite mid tom Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit · Zildjian 13" Z Dynobeat hihat · Ludwig 18" Vistalite floor tom BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite2/Tom Floor Size: 557 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 18" Vistalite floor tom Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit BFD/Data/DLX Zildjian/Hihat 13Z Dynobeat Size: 2176 MB Manufacturer: Zildjian Model: 13" Z Dynobeat hihats Closed (tip + shank) Quarter (tip + shank) Half (tip + shank) ThreeQ (tip + shank) Open (tip) Pedal · Zildjian 20" K Custom Ride · Ludwig 12" Vistalite hi tom BFD/Data/DLX Zildjian/Ride 20K Size: 601 MB Manufacturer: Zildjian Model: 20" K Custom Ride Hit, Bell BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite2/Tom Hi Size: 395 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 12" Vistalite hi tom Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit DVD 2 · DW 18x24" kick BFD/Data/DLX DW/Kick DW-Felt Size: 964 MB Manufacturer: DW Model: 18x24" kick Materials: Birch, black oyster pearl finish Date: 1995 Notes: Felt beater Hit, No snare · Ludwig 14" Vistalite mid tom BFD/Data/DLX VistaLite2/Tom Mid Size: 338 MB Manufacturer: Ludwig Model: 14" Vistalite mid tom Materials: Plastic Date: 1970's Hit · DW 18x24" kick BFD/Data/DLX DW/Kick DW-Plastic Size: 897 MB Manufacturer: DW Model: 18x24" kick Materials: Birch, black oyster pearl finish Date: 1995 Notes: Plastic beater Hit, No snare 9 · DW 14" snare BFD/Data/DLX DW/Snare DW Size: 819 MB Manufacturer: DW Model: 14" snare Materials: Black oyster pearl finish Date: 1995 Hit, Drag, Flam, Rim, SS · Zildjian 18" A Medium Crash BFD/Data/DLX Zildjian/Crash 18A Med Size: 1115 MB Manufacturer: Zildjian Model: 18" A Medium Crash Hit, Edge · Zildjian 19" A Custom Brilliant Crash BFD/Data/DLX Zildjian/Crash 19A Brill Size: 1043 MB Manufacturer: Zildjian Model: 19" A Custom Brilliant Crash Hit, Edge · DW 16x18" floor tom BFD/Data/DLX DW/Tom Floor Size: 909 MB Manufacturer: DW Model: 16x18" floor tom Materials: Black oyster pearl finish Date: 1995 Hit · Zildjian 14" K series hihat · DW 14x14" mid tom BFD/Data/DLX DW/Tom Mid Size: 770 MB Manufacturer: DW Model: 14x14" mid tom Materials: Black oyster pearl finish Date: 1995 Hit BFD/Data/DLX Zildjian/Hihat 14K Old Size: 1726 MB Manufacturer: Zildjian Model: 14" K series hihats Notes: old and worn Closed (tip + shank) Quarter (tip + shank) Half (tip + shank) ThreeQ (tip + shank) Open (tip) Pedal · Ludwig 13" piccolo snare BFD/Data/DLX Ludwig/Snare Piccolo13 Size: ...
