Select Mission You will be presented with a "Mission Selection" screen, where you can browse all installed missions. Missions you have previously completed successfully are marked as "Completed." Use the arrow buttons on the screen or the up/down buttons on your Pocket PC to browse, and press "OK" when you have made your selection.
Select Helicopter You will now be presented the "Helicopter Selection" screen, where you can browse all installed helicopters. Review each helicopter's properties to find the one that best suits your selected mission and your strategy. See the "Helicopters" section of this manual for a more detailed description of all the features. Use the arrow buttons on the screen or the up/down buttons on your Pocket PC to browse, and press "OK" when you are done.
Select Weapons Now you need to select a weapon configuration for your helicopter. The "Weapon Selection" screen will let you browse and select all the installed weapons. On the upper half of the screen, you will see a picture of your helicopter and the pylons it has available. The number of pylons varies with each helicopter. You can attach one weapon system or fuel tank to each pylon.
4 Chopper Alley
To attach the current weapon system to a pylon, simply tap your stylus on the pylon. To remove a weapon system from a pylon, just tap the stylus on the pylon again. As you attach weapon systems to the pylons, you can see that the current payload (or weight) of the helicopter is updated. The payload must be less than the helicopter's maximum payload. If the payload exceeds the helicopter's maximum payload, simply remove or change weapons attached to one or more pylons. Up to three different weapon systems are supported simultaneously, in addition to the standard machine gun available on some helicopters. Start Mission ...and off you go! Please refer to the next section "How to Fly" for details on how to actually fly the helicopter.
2. How to fly
In real life, a helicopter is very difficult to control. In Chopper Alley, you are not only required to master the basic skills of controlling your helicopter, you must also navigate around the scenery to locate your mission objectives, keep an eye on ever-present enemies, and operate the weapon systems. In order for you to accomplish all this, we have created a control system that is both intuitive and easy to use. Looking at the screen, you will see a number of controls. Altitude Your current Altitude is displayed at the very right of the screen. The display will show your altitude up to 100 meters above the ground. Note that "Altitude" here is defined as altitude above the ground--that is how many meters between you and the ground right below you. Therefore, when you fly in a straight, horizontal line, the altitude will constantly change because the ground below you is not level. To change your altitude, tap

on the "Altitude" bar on the screen. This will set your requested altitude, and your helicopter will constantly try to maintain this altitude. Speed Your current speed is displayed at the very left of the screen. The display will show your speed as a percentage of the helicopter's top speed, as well as a readout in actual kilometers per second at the top. To change your speed, tap on the "Speed" bar on the screen. This will set your desired speed and the helicopter will either accelerate or decelerate to accommodate your request. Note that the upper 2/3 of the bar will set a forward speed, while the lower 1/3 will set a reverse speed. Turning/Rotation To turn your helicopter around, use the same simple control mechanism as described for Altitude and Speed. The control is located in the lower/center part of the screen. Unlike the Altitude and Speed, you have to tap-and-hold to continue turning. To stop turning, just release your stylus and the helicopter will rapidly stop turning. Strafe/Sideways A wonderful property of a helicopter, is the ability to move sideways while maintaining a fixed heading, sometimes referred to as "strafing". This makes it possible to dodge incoming rockets while not losing sight of your target. Combined with turning, you can perform advanced maneuvers like spinning around an enemy while constantly targeting him. This specific maneuver will require you to apply opposite turning and sideways movement, and thus will require a combined stylus/button input. Please refer to the button guide for details on your specific Pocket PC. Fuel In the upper right corner of the screen is a readout of how much fuel you have left. This will start to blink and you will hear a repetitive sound signal to notify you that you have between 1 ½ and 2 ½ minutes left before you run out of fuel. To extend your range, you can attach extra fuel tanks to the pylons instead of weapons. Each extra fuel tank will give you approximately two minutes extra airtime. Damage Below the fuel meter, is a readout of how much damage the helicopter has taken. When your helicopter reaches 100% damage, you will lose control and the helicopter will go down in smoke.
6 Chopper Alley
Passengers Below the Damage meter, is a readout of how many passengers you currently have and the maximum number of passengers your helicopter can hold. To pick up a passenger, hover slowly right above the passengers head and he will enter the helicopter. To release all the passengers, land at your base, right in the middle of the landing spot. As soon as you land, all the passengers will jump out and you can go pick up more. Weapons In the upper left corner of the screen, you will see listed all the weapon systems you have attached to your helicopter and the ammunition left for each. If the helicopter comes with a standard machine gun, this will also appear in this list. To activate a weapon system, just tap on it with your stylus. You will not be able to activate empty weapon systems. Map A 2D overhead map is available at all times. Press the Map button to activate/deactivate the map.
3. Helicopters
Chopper Alley comes with a great selection of helicopters. Each helicopter has a set of properties that makes it more or less appropriate for a specific mission or strategy. Each property is listed with two values, one for an empty helicopter (green) and one for a fully loaded helicopter (red). In practice you will probably start off almost fully loaded and work your way towards almost empty as you fire the weapons and the fuel tank gets empty. Your actual load can be monitored on the "Weapon Select" screen. In some of the helicopters, performance varies greatly between "empty" and "fully loaded", while others will perform almost identically. There is also a big difference in what the term "fully loaded" actually means in reference to each helicopter. You will notice that for instance, a Bell Uh1b can carry almost twice the payload of a Super Cobra. This also means that a full weapon configuration will make a much bigger impact on the agility of the Super Cobra as it will be fully loaded, while the Bell Uh1b with the same weapon configuration, will only be half-loaded. Each property is shown with a relative value compared to the other helicopters.

Forward Maximum forward velocity is usually in the range of 150 - 300 km/hour. Reverse Maximum reverse velocity is usually in the range of 50 - 120 km/hour. Strafe Maximum sideways velocity is usually in the range of 50 - 120 km/hour. Climb Rate Maximum change in altitude is usually in the range of 3 - 12 meters/second. Turn Rate Turn rate describes how fast the helicopter can rotate. Usually this in the range of 10 - 40 degrees/second. Acceleration This is how fast the helicopter will be able to change velocity. It applies to forward, reverse, strafe, climb rate and turn rate. Range Range is how far you can stay airborne with the internal fuel. Please note that fuel consumption varies between an empty and a fully loaded helicopter. Payload Payload is the quantity of cargo that the helicopter can carry. It is in the range of 1500 - 7000 kg. Damage This is how much damage the helicopter can sustain before losing control. Passengers This is the number of passengers your helicopter can hold. It is usually in the range of 0 - 15 people. Pylons The number of pylons for attaching weapons and/or extra fuel tanks is usually in the range of 0 - 8 pylons. Machine Gun Some helicopters come with a machine gun with unlimited ammunition.

4. Weapons
Each helicopter can hold up to three different weapon systems in addition to the standard machine gun. For each pylon, you can attach one weapon system. Each weapon system comes with a set of properties that should help you decide about how it fits the selected mission and your strategy. Weight This describes how much weight your selected weapon will add to your helicopter. Payload In this instance, "Payload" means the amount of damage your selected weapon will cause to the target. Range Range refers to the distance to which the weapon is effective. In weapons with a competent guidance system, it also indicates whether or not, if the weapon misses the target, it will have enough fuel to turn and make a second attack. Speed This is how fast the weapon travels toward its target. Accuracy Accuracy describes how often and how accurately the weapon will acquire the correct position of its target and how fast it can change direction, if necessary. Guidance This is the type of guidance system the weapon has, if any. If it has one, the guidance system will be either heat-seeking or radar guided. Helicopter Payload At the top of the screen you will find two meters, one for the helicopter's current payload and one for the helicopter's maximum payload. Keep an eye on these meters, as they will help you identify what the current weapon configuration weighs compared to the maximum weight the helicopter can lift and how this affects the various performance properties of your helicopter.
