GettinG Started GeTTinG sTarTed What's in the Box? nüvi GPS device and vehicle suction cup mount. Vehicle power cable to provide external power, or an FM TMC traffic receiver to provide external power and traffic information. See the table on the right. See the Important Safety and Product Information guide in the product box for important battery safety information. Check your state and local traffic laws before mounting. Currently, state laws in California and Minnesota prohibit drivers from using suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles. Other Garmin dashboard or friction mounting options should be used. See page 49. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual GettinG Started Step 1: Mount the nüvi 1. Plug the vehicle power cable into the Cradle power connector on the right side of the Power cable cradle. 2. Snap the cradle onto the suction cup arm. 3. Clean and dry your windshield and the suction cup with a lint-free cloth. Remove Suction cup mount the clear plastic from the suction cup. Place the suction cup on the windshield. 4. Flip the lever back, toward the windshield. 5. Fit the bottom of your nüvi into the cradle. 6. Tilt the nüvi back until it snaps into place. 7. Plug the other end of the vehicle power cable into a power outlet in your vehicle. Your unit should turn on automatically if it is plugged in and your vehicle is running. 8. If you are using a traffic receiver in Europe, secure the traffic receiver's antenna to the windshield using the suction cups. (The traffic receiver is included in some nüvi 710, 750T, 760, and 770 packages.) nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual GettinG Started Step 2: Configure the nüvi Step 4: Use the nüvi A E B F C D To turn on your nüvi, slide the Power key to the left. Follow the on-screen instructions. Step 3: Acquire Satellites Go outdoors to an open area, out of garages, and away from tall buildings. Stop your vehicle, and turn on the nüvi. Acquiring satellite signals may take a few minutes. G H I The bars indicate GPS satellite strength. When one bar is green, the nüvi has acquired satellite signals. I Touch to use the tools such as media players, settings, and Help. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual GettinG Started Finding Your Destination The Where to menu provides several different categories for you to use when searching for addresses, cities, and other locations. The detailed map loaded in your nüvi contains millions of points of interest, such as restaurants, hotels, and auto services. Touch Where to. Select a category. Select a sub-category. Select a destination. Touch Go. and Enjoy the route! TiP: Touch to see more choices. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual GettinG Started Following Your Route As you travel, your nüvi guides you to your destination with voice prompts, arrows on the map, and directions at the top of the map. If you depart from the original route, your nüvi recalculates the route and provides new directions. Adding a Via Point You can add a stop (via point) to your route. The nüvi gives you directions to the stop and then to your final destination. TiP: If you want to add more than one stop to the route, edit the current route. See page 12. 1. With a route active, touch Menu > Where to. 2. Search for the extra stop. 3. Touch Go. 4. Touch Add as Via Point to add this stop before your destination. Touch Set as new Destination to make this your new final destination. Your route is marked with a magenta line. Follow the arrows as you take turns. A checkered flag marks your destination. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual GettinG Started Taking a Detour If a road on your route is closed, you can take a detour. 1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Detour. Adjusting the Volume The nüvi attempts to get you back on your original route as quickly as possible. If the route you are currently taking is the only reasonable option, the nüvi might not calculate a detour. From the Menu page, touch Volume. Touch and to adjust the master volume. Touch Mute to mute all audio. To set up the FM transmitter, see pages 35­36. Locking the Screen Stopping the Route To prevent accidental screen taps, slide the Power key to the right ( ). To unlock the screen, slide the Power key to the center position. 1. With a route active, touch Menu. 2. Touch Stop. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual 7 Where to Where To The Where to menu provides several different categories you can use to search for locations. To learn how to perform a simple search, see page 5. TiP: Touch near to change the search area. See page 13. Touch Save to save this location. See page 10. If a mobile phone with Bluetooth wireless technology is connected, touch to call this location (nüvi 710, 760, and 770 only). Finding an Address Go Page Options Touch an item in the search results list to view the Go page. Touch go to create a turn-by-turn route to this location. Touch Show Map to view this location on the map. If the GPS mode is off, touch Set Location to set your current location here. 1. Touch Where to > Address. 2. Touch Change State/Province, if necessary. 3. Touch Search All. OR Touch Spell City, enter the city/postal code, and touch Done. Select the city/postal code in the list. (Not all map data provides postal code searching.) 4. Enter the number of the address, and touch Done. 5. Enter the street name, and touch Done. Select the correct street in the list, if necessary. 6. Touch the address, if necessary. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual Where to Finding a Place by Spelling the Name If you know the name of the location you are looking for, you can spell it using the on-screen keyboard. You can also enter letters contained in the name to narrow the search. 1. Touch Where to > Points of Interest > Spell Name. 2. Using the on-screen keyboard, enter letters in the name. Touch Done. Touch to add a space. Touch and to move the cursor. Touch to delete the character. Touch to select words you have recently typed and selected. Touch Mode to select the keyboard language mode. Touch to enter numbers and special characters. TiP: You can change the keyboard layout to QWERTY, which is like a standard computer keyboard layout. See page 37. Using the On-Screen Keyboard When an on-screen keyboard appears, touch a letter or number to enter it. Setting a Home Location 1. Touch Where to > Go Home. 2. Select an option. You can set a home location for the place you return to most often. Going Home After you set your home location, you can route to it at any time by touching Where to > go Home. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual Where to Changing Your Home Location To change your home location, you must first delete it from Favorites. 1. Touch Where to > Favorites. 2. Touch Home > Edit > Delete > Yes. Deleting Recently Found Places To remove all places from the Recently Found list, touch Clear > Yes. noTe: When you touch Clear, all items from the list are removed. It does not delete the actual place from your unit. After you delete your home location, reset it by following the steps in the "Setting a Home Location" section above. Favorites Finding Recently Found Places You can save places in your Favorites, so you can quickly find them and create routes to them. Your home location is also stored in Favorites. Your nüvi stores the last 50 of your recent finds in the Recently Found list. The most recently viewed places appear at the top of the list. Touch Where to > recently Found to view your recently found items. Saving Your Current Location From the Map page, touch . Touch Save Location to save your current location. 0 nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual Where to Saving Places You Find 1. After you have found a place you want to save, touch Save. 2. Touch OK. The place is saved in Favorites. 4. Touch a button to edit the location: · Change Name--enter a new name, and touch Done. · Change Map Symbol--touch a new symbol. · Change Phone Number-- enter a phone number, and touch Done. · Delete--removes this item from the Favorites list. Touch Yes. Finding Saved Places 1. Touch Where to. 2. Touch Favorites. Your saved locations are listed. TiP: Your Last Position is automatically saved each time you remove the nüvi from the cradle. Use this feature to find your car in a parking lot. Editing Saved Places 1. Touch Where to > Favorites. 2. Touch the location you want to edit. 3. Touch Edit. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual Where to Creating and Taking Routes Touch Where to > routes. Select the route you want to take and touch go. Creating a Saved Route Use your nüvi to create and save routes before your next trip. You can save up to 10 routes. 1. Touch Where to (or Tools) > Routes > New. 2. Touch Add New Start Point. 3. Find a location as your starting point, and touch Select. 4. Touch Add New End Point. 5. Find a location as your ending point, and touch Select. 6. Touch to add another location to your route. Touch to remove a location. 7. Touch Next to calculate your route and view it on the map. 8. Touch Save to save the route and exit. Editing Routes 1. Touch Where to (or Tools) > Routes. 2. Select the route you want to edit. 3. Touch Edit. 4. Touch an option to edit the route: · Touch Change Name. Enter a new name, and touch Done. · Touch Add/Remove Points to add new start, via, or end points to the route. · Touch Manually Reorder Points to change the order of points along your route. · Touch Optimally Reorder Points to automatically order the points. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual Where to · Touch Recalculate to change the route preference to calculate by faster time, shorter distance, or off road. · Touch Delete to remove this item. noTe: Your changes are automatically saved when you exit any of the route edit pages. · Touch Save to save this location. · Touch go to navigate to the location. · If the GPS mode is off, touch Set Loc to set your location to the selected location. (See page 37.) Entering Coordinates Finding a Place Using the Map Use the Browse Map page to view different parts of the map. Touch Where to > Browse Map. If you know the geographic coordinates of your destination, you can use your nüvi to navigate to any location using its latitude and longitude coordinates. This can be especially helpful when geocaching. Touch Where to > Coordinates. To change the type of coordinates, touch Format. Because different maps and charts use different position formats, the nüvi allows you to choose the correct coordinate format for the type of map you are using. Enter the coordinates, and then touch next. Touch go to create a turn-by-turn Tips for Browsing the Map · Touch the map, and drag to view different parts of the map. · Touch and to zoom in and out. · Touch any object on the map. Navigating Off Road Searching Near Another Location noTe: Your nüvi automatically searches for places near your current location. If you are not following roadways as you navigate, use Off Road mode. Touch Tools > Settings > navigation > route Preference > off road > oK. Select a destination and touch go to navigate off road to the destination. 1. Touch Where to > Near. 2. Select an option: · Where I Am Now--search near your current location. · A Different City--search near the city you enter. · My Current Route--search along your route. · My Destination--search near your current destination. 3. Touch OK. Walking to a Destination If you are walking to your destination, use Pedestrian mode to optimize your route for walking. Touch Tools > Settings > System > Usage Mode > Pedestrian > oK. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual USinG the Main PaGeS UsinG The Main PaGes Map Page Touch View map to open the Map page. The vehicle icon shows your current location. Touch and drag the map to view a different area of the map (see page 13). Touch the text bar to open the Turn List page. Touch to zoom out. Touch to zoom in. Touch Menu to return to the Menu page. Touch Arrival or Speed to open the Trip Information page. To save your current location, touch the vehicle icon. Touch Turn In to open the Next Turn page. Map Page while Navigating a Route Trip Information Page Turn List Page Next Turn Page TiP: A speed limit icon may appear as you travel on major roadways. This icon displays the current speed limit of the roadway. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual USinG the Main PaGeS Trip Information Page The Trip Information page displays your current speed and provides helpful statistics about your trip. To view the Trip Information page, touch the Speed or arrival field on the Map page. If you make frequent stops, leave the nüvi turned on so it can accurately measure elapsed time during the trip. Turn List Page When you are navigating a route, the Turn List page displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns. Touch the green text bar on the top of the Map page to open the Turn List page. Touch a turn on the list to view the Next Turn page for that turn. Touch Show Map to view the entire route on the Browse Map. Resetting Trip Information If you want accurate trip information, reset the trip information before beginning a trip. Touch reset Trip to reset the information on the Trip Information page. Touch reset Max to reset the maximum speed. Next Turn Page When you are navigating a route, the Next Turn page shows the turn on the map and the distance and time left before you reach the turn. To view an upcoming turn on the map, touch the Turn in field on the Map page, or touch any turn from the Turn List page. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual USinG handS-free callinG UsinG hands-free callinG Bluetooth is available only in the nüvi 710, 760, and 770. Using Bluetooth wireless technology, your nüvi can connect to your mobile phone to become a hands-free device. To see if your device with Bluetooth technology is compatible with the nüvi, visit www.garmin.com/bluetooth. Bluetooth wireless technology establishes a wireless link between devices, such as a mobile phone and the nüvi. The first time you use two devices together you must "pair" them by establishing a relationship using a PIN/ passkey. After the initial pairing, the two devices can connect automatically each time you turn them on. noTe: You might have to set your device to connect to the nüvi automatically when it is turned on. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual Pairing Your Phone To pair and connect, your phone and the nüvi must be turned on and be within 10 meters of each other. Initiate pairing from your nüvi or from your mobile phone. Refer to your phone's instructions. To pair using the phone settings: 1. Enable the phone's Bluetooth component. This might be in a menu called Settings, Bluetooth, Connections, or Hands-free. 2. Initiate a search for Bluetooth devices. 3. Select the nüvi from the list of devices. 4. Enter the nüvi's Bluetooth PIN (1234) into your phone. 7 USinG handS-free callinG 1. From the Menu page, touch Tools > Settings > Bluetooth > Add. 2. Enable your phone's Bluetooth component and enable Find Me/ Discoverable/Visible mode. These settings might be in a Bluetooth, Connections, or Hands-free menu. 3. Touch OK on the nüvi. 4. Select your phone, and touch OK. 5. Enter the nüvi's Bluetooth PIN (1234) in your phone. To pair using the nüvi settings: Receiving a Call When you get a call, the Incoming Call window opens. Touch answer to answer the call. Touch ignore to ignore the call and stop the phone from ringing. The internal microphone is in the front of the nüvi; speak normally. In a Call When your phone is connected to your nüvi, you are ready to make phone calls. Touch Phone to access the Phone menu. When you turn on the nüvi, it tries to connect to the last phone to which it was connected. noTe: Not all phones support all features of the nüvi Phone Menu. During a call, the in Call icon appears. Touch > end Call to hang up. Touch > Call options for the following options: · Touch Tones--displays a keypad page so you can use automated systems, such as voice mail. · Transfer audio To Phone--this is helpful if you want to turn off the nüvi, but stay on the call or if you need privacy. To switch back, touch Transfer audio To Device. · Mute Microphone. nüvi 700 Series Owner's Manual USinG handS-free callinG Using Call Waiting When you are on a call and you receive a second call (call waiting), the nüvi displays the Incoming Call window. Touch answer to answer the call. The first call is placed on hold. To switch between calls: 1. Touch > Switch To. 2. Touch End Call to hang up; this does not disconnect the call on hold. Using Your Phone Book Each time your mobile phone connects with the nüvi, the phone book is automatically loaded into the nüvi. It may take a few minutes for the phone book to be available. 1. Touch Phone > Phone Book. 2. Touch the phone book entry (contact) you want to call. 3. Touch Dial to call the contact, or touch Compose to send an SMS/text message. Phone Menu From the Menu page, touch Phone to open the Phone menu. Press Status to view the connected phone's signal strength, battery level, and name. noTe: Not all phones support all features of the nüvi Phone Menu. Dialing a Point of Interest 1. This is a common limitation of most USB mass storage devices. · Maps, routes, and waypoints from MapSource®: see page 45 Loading Files Step 1: Insert an SD Card (Optional) To insert or remove the card, press it in until it clicks. Step 4: Eject and Unplug the USB Cable Step 3: Transfer Files to Your nüvi When you are finished transferring files, click the eject icon in your system tray, or drag the volume icon to the Trash on Mac computers. Unplug your nüvi from your computer. Copy and paste files from your computer into the nüvi drives/volumes. 1. Browse your computer for the file you want to copy. 2. Highlight the file, and select Edit > Copy. 3. Open the "Garmin" or SD card drive/volume. 4. Select Edit > Paste. The file appears in the list of files on the nüvi memory or SD card. Deleting Files With the nüvi connected to your computer, open nüvi or SD card drive/ volume. Highlight the file that you want to delete, and press the Delete key on your computer's keyboard. CaUTion: If you are not sure about a file's purpose, do noT delete it. Your nüvi memory contains important system files that should noT be deleted. Touch the arrows to view all the images. Where Am I Touch Where am i to view information about your current location. This is a helpful feature if you need to tell emergency personnel your location. USinG fM traffic UsinG fM Traffic The traffic receiver is included in some nüvi 710, 750T, 760, and 770 packages. Use an FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver to receive traffic information broadcast over the FM Radio Data System. For information about FM traffic receivers and coverage areas, see www.garmin.com/traffic. noTe: Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy of the traffic information. The FM traffic receiver simply receives signals from the traffic service provider and shows that information on your nüvi. noTe: The FM traffic receiver and nüvi must be in data range of an FM station transmitting TMC data to receive traffic information. noTe: You can only access the traffic information if the nüvi is connected to an FM traffic receiver. LED Blink Codes The green Power LED lights when connected to external power. Touch Tools > Traffic to display traffic incidents in your area. Touch View by road to see the incidents on each road in the area. If there is traffic on your route, touch on My route to view details. Traffic on Your Route Traffic In Your Area When calculating your route, the nüvi examines the current traffic and automatically optimizes the route for the shortest time. You might still be routed through traffic if no alternative roads exist. If a severe traffic delay occurs on your route while you are navigating, the nüvi automatically recalculates the route. The Map page displays or when there is traffic on your route. The number in the icon represents the number of minutes the traffic has added to your route, which has been automatically calculated into the arrival time shown on the map. To avoid traffic on your route: 1. On the Map page, touch . or 2. Touch to view traffic delays. 3. Touch Avoid. Traffic on Your Road When you are not navigating a route and there is traffic on your road, the Map page displays a traffic icon, such as or . Touch the icon to view information about the traffic delay.
