Seats & Restraint Systems Section ' I Here you'll find information about the seats in your vehicle and how to use your safety belts properly. You can also learnabout some things you should not do with air bags and safety belts. Seats and Seat Controls This section tells you about the seats-how to adjust them, and fold them up and down. Manual Front Seat (Except Easy Entry) 1-1 Move thelever under the front of the seat towards the driver's door to unlockit. Slide the seat to where you want it. Then release the lever and try to movethe seat with your body to make sure the seat is locked into place. Manual Front Seat (Easy Entry Only) Move the lever under the front of the seat up to unlock it. Slide the seat to where you want it. Then release the lever and try to move the seat with your body to make sure the seat is locked into place. Manual Lumbar Adjustment If you have this feature, there will be a knob on the outside of the driver and passenger bucket seats. Turn the topof the knob forward to increase lumbar support and or rearward to decrease lumbar support. 1-2 Power Driver's Seat If you have this feature, there will be a control pad on the front of your driver's seat. The leftcontrol makes the rear of the seat go up and down. The right control makes the front of the seat go up and down. The center control makes the whole seat go up and down or forward and r e w a r d . Power Lumbar Adjustment If you have this feature, there will be a control on the front of your driver's seat. Press and hold the passenger's side of the control until you have the desired lumbar support. To decrease lumbar support, press the driver's side of the control. 1-3 Reclining FrontSeatbacks To adjust the seatback, lift the lever on the outer sideof the seat. Release the leverto lock the seatback where you want it. Pull up on the lever go and the seat will to an upright position. But don't have a seatback reclinedif your vehicle is moving. 1-4 Front Seatback Latches (2-Door Models) The front seatback folds forward to let people get intothe back seat. Your seatback will move back and forth freely, unless you come to a sudden stop. Then it will will lock in place. There's one time the seatback may not fold without some help from you. That's if your vehicle is parked going down a fairly steep hill. To fold a front seatback forward, push the seatback toward the rear as you lift this latch. Then the seatback will fold forward. Thelatch must be down for the seat to work properly. 1-5 Easy Entry Seat (2-Door Models) The outside front passenger seat of your vehicle makes it easy to get in and out of the rear vehicle area. When you tilt the outside front passenger seatback fully forward, the whole seat will slide forward. 0 After someone gets into the rear seat area, move the seatback to its original position. Then move the seat rearward until it locks. To get out, again tilt the seatback fully forward. Head Restraints Head restraints are fixed on some models and adjustable on others. Slide an adjustable head restraint up or down so that the top of the restraint is closest to the top of your ears. This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash. The head restraints tilt forward and rearward also. 1-6 Rear Folding Sear Your utility vehicle has a folding rear seat which lets you fold the seatbacks down for more cargo space. The rear seat release handles are in the upper center of the rear ofthe seatbacks. Push back on the seatbacks as you pull up on the handles. To raise the seatbacks, justlift up the seatbacks and push until they lockin the upright position. Push and pull on the seatbacks to check that the latches have locked in the upright position. If they haven't, have them fixed immediately. Safety Belts: They're for Everyone This part of the manual tells you how to use safety belts properly.It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts. And it explains the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint, or "air bag" system. Your vehicle has a light that comes on as a reminder to buckleup. (See "Safety Belt Reminder Light" in the Index.) In many states and Canadian provinces, the law says to wear safety belts. Here's why: They work. You never know if you'll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you don't know if it will be a bad one. A few crashes are mild,and some crashes can beso serious that even buckled up a person wouldn't survive. But most crashesare in between. In can many of them, people who buckle up survive and sometimes walkaway. Without belts they could have been badly hurt killed. or After more than25 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most crashes buckling up does matter ... a lot! Why SafetyBelts Work When you ride in or on anything, you go as fast as it goes. Take the simplest vehicle. Suppose it's just a seat on wheels 1-8 Put someone on it. Get it up to speed. Then stop the vehicle. The rider doesn't stop. The person keeps going until stopped by something. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield ... 1-9 or the instrument panel ... or the safety belts! I I c With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That's why safety belts make such good sense.
