POWER SOURCES Power the G6 by installing 2 AA alkaline (not included), lithium or Ni-MH batteries or by plugging in the AC adapter. A symbol appears in the upper right of the LCD, indicating battery or AC adapter power. PREVENTING BATTERY LEAKAGE To minimize the possibility of battery acid leakage, only use high quality alkaline, lithium or rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride batteries. Never intermix old with new, or different brands or types of batteries. Damage caused by battery acid leakage is not covered by this product's warranty. TURNING THE G6 ON AND OFF WITHOUT/WITH THE SLEEP TIMER Use a quick, short press of the POWER/SLEEP, , button to turn on the radio without the sleep timer. Use a long press (3 seconds) to turn it on with the sleep timer on. G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL THE NUMERIC KEYPAD #1-8 DUAL-FUNCTION BUTTONS Numeric keypad buttons #1-7 have dual functions, one function with the radio turned off and another with the radio turned on. These functions are described in the text. CHARGING NI-MH BATTERIES IN THE G6 With the optional AC adapter/charger connected, the G6 internally recharges 2 Ni-MH (nickel-metal-hydride) rechargeable batteries (not included). Note that the G6 can still play while the batteries are charging and the alarm functions will work. To charge batteries: 1. With the G6 turned off, install 2 NI-MH batteries and connect the AC adapter/charger. 2. Press the battery charge button (numeric keypad #7) for about 3 seconds, or until CHG appears in the upper right of the display. 3. Use the tuning knob to select the charging time in hours (00-36) based on the mAh rating of your batteries: 11 hours for 1100 mAH rating; 23 hours for 2300 mAH rating; etc. 4. Press the PAGE/TIME button when finished. In the display, the battery symbol's segments continuously activate from left to right during charging. Battery charging terminates once the set charge time has been reached. SETTING UP AM AND FM OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA Your G6 has been set up at the factory for use in North America (U.S. or Canada), no changes to the initial factory settings are needed. If you're in another part of the world, follow the steps below to set it for your area. G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL SETTING UP AM AND FM OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA continued In North America, the FM band begins at 87.5 MHz. In other parts of the world, it may begin at 87 MHz or 76 MHz. 1. With the G6 turned off press the #4 numeric keypad button for about 2 seconds. F87.5, F76 or F87 appears flashing in the display. 2. Press the #4 numeric keypad button sequentially to select the one that's correct for your area. 3. Immediately press the PAGE/TIME button. In North America, AM stations are spaced by 10 KHz. In Europe and other areas, they are spaced by 9 KHz. 1. With the G6 turned off press the #5 numeric keypad button for about 2 seconds. 9 or 10 KHz appear flashing in the display. 2. Press the #5 numeric keypad button sequentially to select the one that's correct for your area. 3. Immediately press the PAGE/TIME button. USING THE SLEEP TIMER The sleep timer enables the G6 to play for a specified number of minutes (00-99), then shut off. 1. To activate the sleep-timer turn the radio on with a 2 second press of the SLEEP button, ; 01-99 appears in the display. 2. Use the tuning knob to select the number of minutes, 01-99, you want it to play, or select ON with the tuning knob if you don't want to utilize the sleep timer. 6 G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL VOLUME CONTROL With the G6 on or off, use the +-/VOL buttons to adjust to volume levels 0-31. The level number appears in the display. EARPHONE SOCKET AND USING EARPHONES (NOT INCLUDED) Turn the volume down before wearing the earphones, then turn up the volume to your liking. Plug them into the earphone socket on the left side of the radio. SELECTING FM, AM, SHORTWAVE AND AIRCRAFT BAND When listening to FM, shortwave or Aircraft Band, fully extend the telescopic antenna. It need not be extended when listening to AM stations (the AM ferrite-bar antenna is located inside the G6). Turn on the G6. To go to the band of your choice press the FM BAND button, sequentially press the MW (AM)/LW/AIR button or sequentially press the METERBAND button to cycle through the SW meterbands. TUNING IN STATIONS Turn on the G6. Stations are tuned with the AUTO Buttons, Tuning-Knob, Direct Frequency Entry and Auto-Search. G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL MANUAL TUNING Quick, short, sequential presses of the AUTO buttons enables tuning up or down frequency. Alternately, the TUNING knob can be used. In Shortwave the tuning knob or manual tuning must be used to tune out of the broadcast bands. DIRECT FREQUENCY ENTRY Turn on the G6. Use this method when the desired frequency of a radio station is known. AM, LW and SW frequencies are entered in kilohertz (KHz), e.g. 810 KHz, 162 KHz or 9475 KHz.; FM and Air Band frequencies are entered in megahertz (MHz), e.g. 102.9 MHz or 124.870 MHz, ignoring the decimal point. 1. Use the numeric keypad buttons to enter the frequency. 2. Within 3 seconds, press the AM button if it's an MW (AM), LW, SW or AIR frequency, or the FM button for FM frequencies. AUTO-SEARCH TUNING With the G6 on, auto-search tuning starts by pressing either of the AUTO SEARCH buttons (AUTO ) for about 2 seconds. The G6 has 3 selectable auto-search modes: STOP, ATS or D-5. The factory programmed default mode is STOP. These are described below. STOP: Auto-searching stops on the next encountered station. D-: Auto-searching stops for 5 seconds on each encountered station, then moves on. ATS: (Auto Tuning Storage): Auto-searching automatically stores the strongest FM local stations into memories starting with page 99 and counting downward until all are stored, e.g. 98, 97, 96, etc. Tune to the FM band and perform auto-search. 8 G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL AUTO-SEARCH TUNING continued After the ATS scan, press PAGE/TIME to enter the memo mode. Select page 99 or lower with the AUTO buttons, and the memory with the numeric keypad #1-7 buttons. To select an auto-search mode: 1. With the G6 turned off, hold down the numeric keypad #6 button for about 2 seconds, then release. Note that the last chosen mode flashes in the screen. 2. While the mode flashes, perform quick, short presses of the #6 button to select alternate modes. 3. Press the PAGE/TIME button when finished. NOTE: auto tuning cannot be performed in air band. TUNING KNOB AND JOG BUTTON USE Turn on the G5. Stations are tuned with the Buttons, Tuning-Knob, Direct Frequency Entry and Auto-Search. Quick, s hort, sequential presses of the buttons enables tuning up or down frequency. Alternately, the TUNING knob can be used. Continuous tuning in shortwave can only be done with the tuning knob and via direct frequency entry. SHORTWAVE LISTENING To learn about shortwave we recommend the two publications below, published yearly and available from major booksellers. Additionally, the Internet is a great resource for learning about shortwave. Go to your favorite search engine and type in `shortwave listening'. SHORTWAVE BROADCAST RECEPTION Shortwave enables listening to broadcasts over vast distances including other countries and continents. The following information will help you get the best results. Select appropriate SW meterbands with the METERBAND button. · During the day, frequencies above 11000 KHz are usually best. · At night, frequencies below 13000 KHz are usually best. · Around sunset and sunrise, the entire shortwave range may be good. · Getting very close to a window and holding the radio improves shortwave reception. TUNING SSB (SINGLE SIDEBAND) SSB enables listening to shortwave two-way communications using the single-sideband mode, such as amateur radio, Morse code, weather-fax transmissions and other signals often referred to as `utility' signals. The Internet and your local library are great resources to learn more. 10 G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL TUNING SSB (SINGLE SIDEBAND) continued Turn on the G6. Tune to the shortwave frequency of your choice, using the methods described. To use SSB, turn on the SSB circuit by pressing the SSB button. Note that SSB appears in the display. Use the tuning knob to FAST-tune the SSB signal, then SLOW-tune with the tuning knob. Press the JOG button to change from `Fast' to `Slow' tuning. The SSB circuit allows tuning of both upper and lower sideband signals. STORING STATIONS INTO MEMORY The G6 has 700 memories (also called presets), arranged in 100 pages (page 00-99), with each page holding 7 memories. Buttons #1-7 represent memory locations. All memories are randomly programmable, meaning that any kind of frequency can be stored into any memory. SSB selection is not stored. Note that when storing into an already occupied memory position, its contents will be replaced with your new entry. 1. Turn on the G6. 2. Tune to the desired station. 3. Press the PAGE/TIME button to place the G6 into MEMO mode. 4. To select the desired memory page (00-99) use the AUTO buttons. 5. Store the station by pressing one of the #1-7 buttons for about 2 seconds or until the square around the memory location in the LCD blinks. 6. To store another station, get out of memo mode by pressing PAGE/TIME and tune to the station; then repeat the steps above. 7. When finished storing stations, press the PAGE/TIME button to exit MEMO mode. 11 G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL ACCESSING STORED MEMORIES 1. Turn on the G6 and enter MEMO mode by pressing the PAGE/ TIME button, causing MEMO to appear on the left side of the display. 2. Select the desired memory page with the AUTO buttons. 3. Select the desired memory with the numeric keypad buttons #17. The square around the selected memory blinks. DELETING ONE MEMORY The only way to delete one memory location is to delete the entire memory page or simply store another frequency over it. DELETING THE CONTENTS OF A MEMORY PAGE 1. To delete a memory page turn the G6 off. 2. Press SSB until MEMO and PAGE appear in the display. 3. Use AUTO to select the page whose contents you wish to erase. 4. Press EDIT to erase the contents. Note that the squares disappear around the memory locations. COPY A MEMORY PAGE This feature enables copying memory contents from one page to another. 1. Turn the G6 off. 2. Press SSB until MEMO and PAGE appear in the display. 3. Use AUTO to select the page whose contents you wish to copy. 4. Press/release SSB. COPY appears in the display. 5. Use AUTO to select the page to copy to. 6. Press/release EDIT to paste it. 12 G6 AVIATOR OWNER'S MANUAL DELETING THE CONTENTS OF ALL MEMORY PAGES 1. Turn the G6 off. 2. Do a long press on the numeric keypad numbers 0, 9 and 0. RST appears in the display. 3. Press the RESET button with a paper clip. LABELING MEMORY PAGES Memory pages can be uniquely labeled with four, intermixed digits or letters. 1. With the G6 turned on, select memory mode with the PAGE/ TIME button. MEMO appears in the display. 2. Use the AUTO buttons to select the desired memory page. 3 ...
