Operational Notes If your MP3 My Drive will not be operated for a prolonged period, please remove the batteries to avoid possible damage caused by electrical leakage. The MP3 My Drive player should be kept in areas free from extreme temperature changes, moisture and dust. Set the HOLD switch to the release position before operating. Do not drop your Multimedia MP3 My Drive to avoid damages to the housing surface and battery. 6 Battery Status (Time unit: hour) *Battery life may vary from one brand to another. *Please change the battery if the following conditions appear: appears, and displays "Low The Low Battery Indicator Battery," then shuts down. All the buttons make no response and are not workable even after the battery is taken out and reinstalled. Note: To avoid static electricity, please avoid operating the player in an extremely dry environment. Locate the Lithium battery (Type 2032) Install the battery. Reception of radio: There are three settings when listening to FM Radio using your FM Tuner Headset. The three settings include "OFF," "(L) Low Volume," and "(H) High Volume" Listen to MP3: Connect your headphone jack to the headphone jack on the MP3 Player. Be sure to turn off your FM Radio before using your MP3 player. Press and hold the Play button on your MP3 Player to power on the unit. 4. 9 Repeat modes includes Repeat, Repeat All, Random, Preview, and Normal (Normal mode isn't illustrated in the figure.) Equalizer modes include Jazz, Classic, Rock, Pop, and Normal 10 Turning the power on/off The power will be turned on when PLAY/STOP is pressed. In 2 seconds, a display with a blue backlight appears. The backlight duration time may be adjusted in the "Backlight" setting of the menu. The shorter the time your Backlight is lit the longer your battery life will be. This allows the user to utilize the power-saving features. The power will be turned off when PLAY/STOP is pressed for more than 3 seconds. "Power OFF" will be displayed on the screen and the unit will then automatically shut itself off. Playing MP3 music 1. When you turn on the Multimedia MP3 My Drive, a set of numbers will be displayed, ie: 03-33. This means the third song is currently playing and there are 33 total songs in the My Drive MP3 Player. 2. When you press PLAY/STOP again, the current track will be played as shown above. The playback time indicator is displayed on the top left corner. 11 3. If you want to select the previous/next piece, scroll through with the rolling wheel to find the desired track. The music will stop if you press PLAY/STOP. 4. By pressing PLAY/STOP for 3 seconds, you can turn the power off. 5. By pressing VOL+/VOL- , you can control the volume under either PLAY or PAUSE status. The volume steps (see illustration) will increase or decrease when VOL+/VOL- is pressed correspondingly. There are 32 volume steps and the volume level ranges from 0 to 31. Caution The battery status indicator may flicker while the MP3 music is playing, which results from heavy movement of the battery supply. To get an accurate battery life reading, hold the unit still and read the battery life display. 12 Use menu under the playing mode 1. Press PLAY/STOP to turn on the MP3 My Drive. 2. To access the MENU, press the MENU toggle down. Be careful not to push the toggle left or right to avoid skipping tracks. The following shows the function menu of the MP3 My Drive. All the options are listed in the above table. You may view and 13 select an item by using the toggle lever. 1. You can use LAST or NEXT to select every item in the function menu and press down MODE to enter the function. 2. When "Memory Info" is selected, the MP3 My Drive will display a dialog box about the capacity of the memory. If no button is being pressed, it will return to the Play interface after 2 seconds. You can see your Digital Audio memory as following: Voice Recording Function 1. Press MENU. The following will be displayed. 2. Select REC to enter into the Voice Recording interface (see illustration). 14 3. Now you can select the files to be played by using the toggle lever. Press PLAY/STOP to listen to the recorded files (see the bottom left illustration). If there are no recorded files, the interface will display the following (see below right illustration): 4. Press MODE and you will see the function menu under the Voice Recording mode (see bottom left illustration). Select "Record" in Menu and press MODE to start voice recording. The Recording interface is illustrated on the bottom right. 5. You can stop recording by pressing PLAY/STOP momentarily and exit from the Voice Recording mode and switch to the MP3 function by selecting the Function menu. (Note: While recording, all buttons except PLAY/STOP and HOLD do not work.) 15 The Voice Recording Mode Menu You can use the Function menu to operate the MP3 My Drive Player under the Voice Recording mode. 1. Press MODE, select REC, and press MODE again to enter the Recording interface. 3. In the Voice Recording interface, press MODE to view the Function menu in the Recording mode (see below illustration). There are 6 items in the menu as shown. They denote different functions such as Return to the Music mode, Voice Record, Delete Recorded Files, Display Information, the Memory, Backlight, and Return to Current Interface. Exit the voice recording mode After completing your recording, you can exit the Voice Recording mode and switch to the Music mode by using the 16 menu. 1. Press MODE in the Voice Recording menu and the following is displayed: 2. Use LAST/NEXT to select Music Mode. 3. Press MODE to confirm, and then it will return to Music mode. To Delete files If you want to delete files in your MP3 My Drive, you may do so by using the menu. You can also use the Digital Audio Manager Software to do so. You can delete songs in the MP3 My Drive Player by doing the following: 1. Press and hold PLAY/STOP to turn on the MP3 My Drive. 2. Press MODE to get the Function menu. 3. Find "Del File" using the toggle to scroll between selections in the menu. 4. Press MODE (Push down the toggle) to confirm the selection. Then the following display will appear. The upper row displays which track you have selected, and the bottom row displays the name of the song. 17 5. Now you may select the files to be deleted. Press MODE and the dialog box to delete appear (see below illustration). In this dialog box, press MODE to confirm. If you want to cancel deleting the file, press any key to return to previous menu. EQ (Equalizer) You can select a different EQ mode according to the style of music you're enjoying. 1. Press MODE to display the menu. 3. Select EQ by toggling between the selections. 4. Press MODE and the EQ menu is displayed. 5. Select the Equalizer mode. There are five modes: JAZZ, CLASSIC, ROCK, POP, and NORMAL. After selecting EQ, the following is displayed: 18 You can experience perfect Jazz, Classic, Rock, or Pop music by selecting a suitable corresponding mode. "Normal" mode plays the song in its original sound. If you don't want to change the current settings, choose "Return" to exit the EQ menu. Repeat mode If you would like to listen to a song over and over, then you can select the Repeat mode. 1. Press MODE to display the menu. 2. Select "Repeat" in the menu using NEXT/LAST. 3. Press MODE to display the Repeat menu. By selecting "Repeat," the "Play Repeat" mode can be changed. You may select the following modes: Random, Normal, Repeat All, Repeat,and 19 review. REPEAT: Plays the current song repeatedly. REPEAT ALL: Plays all songs repeatedly in order until another operation is performed. RANDOM: Plays all songs at random and then stops. PREVIEW: Plays every first 10 seconds of all MP3 music in order and stops after the last song has been played. NORMAL: Plays the songs in normal sequence and stops after the last song has been completely played. If you do not want to change the current settings, you can choose "Return" to exit the current menu. 20 The Backlight The MP3 My Drive Player gives you the option to adjust the amount of time your Backlight is displayed. This feature is important for saving power and extending the battery life of your unit. 1. While in either MUSIC or REC mode, push down the "Mode" button to bring up the menu. Select "Backlight" in the menu 2. Press MODE again to enter the menu of "Backlight" (see below illustration): You may choose to turn off the backlight or leave the backlight on for intervals of 5, 10, 15, or 20 seconds each time the button is pressed. "Off" means the backlight will not be on at all to prolong the life of the battery. Examine the utilization of the internal memory The MP3 My Drive Player allows you to check the amount a data space on your My Drive. 21 1. Select "Memory Info" in the menu by pressing down on the "MODE" toggle while in either the Music or REC modes. 2. Press MODE to confirm. The MP3 My Drive Player will display a dialog box (see below illustration) to show the capacity of the available memory. It will return to the Play interface after 2 seconds if no button is pressed. USB Connection You can transmit MP3 files to the MP3 My Drive Player through the USB port of your PC. 1. Make sure your PC supports USB devices. (Refer to the manual of your PC for information about hardware). 2. Remove the cap of the H-MP128 and connect the MP3 My Drive directly into your PC's USB port. Or, you may use the included USB extension cable. 3. The LCD display will depict a connection picture when the connection is finished (see below illustration). 4. If you have installed the included software, your PC will automatically detect the device when the MP3 My Drive is connected to the PC. If not, please install the device manager software first. We strongly recommend users to install the included management software under Windows 98/XP/2000. 22 System Requirements It is important to install the MP3 My Drive Manager Software before connecting the MP3 My Drive to your PC. After inserting the Installation CD into the CDROM, the USB Driver will automatically install itself. The Digital Audio Manager software requires the following: ¤ ¤ ¤ ¤ ¤ ¤ ¤ ¤ ¤ IBM compatible personal computer Pentium 166 MHz MMX or faster Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000 or Windows XP USB Port 32MB RAM or more (64MB is recommended for Windows 2000) 20MB free hard-disk space or more 4x CD-ROM drive or more Sound Card (optional) Internet accessibility (recommended) 23 Installation of the Manager Software Insert the Installation CD into the CD-ROM. The driver installation will automatically initiate. Follow the prompt on your computer and both the Digital Audio Manager Software and USB Driver will be successfully installed. It will then prompt you to restart your PC when the installation has completed. After doing so, the Digital Audio icon will be created on your Window's Desktop. How to use the Digital Audio Management System First connect the MP3 My Drive Player to your PC. The MP3 My Drive LCD Display window will then show you this picture when the connection has finished. Click the icon on the Desktop to execute The Digital Audio Management System interface. 24 Sending files using the Digital Audio Manager First connect the Digital Audio to your PC, then turn on the unit. 1. Double click the Digital Audio Management System icon on the desktop. 2. Select the desired files. First, select the folder that includes the files to be transmitted from the left column. Then the files in the selected folder will be displayed in right column automatically. You can also select the file type in the menu on the top left corner to make your operation easier. 25 3. Click the "Download" button or select the "Download" option from the Tool Menu. 4. A "Copy" interface will appear. 5. The system will automatically set up an EDISK directory and place the non-audio files to the EDISK folder in the removable disk of the MP3 My Drive Player after you download non-MP3 or WMA files. 6. The management system will automatically examine the MP3 My Drive. When the MP3 My Drive is disconnected from the PC , the management system will not work. Caution 26 1. Do not pull out the MP3 My Drive while a file is being downloaded. This may damage the MP3 My Drive. 2. If the MP3 My Drive does not work, try taking out the battery and reinserting it after 3 seconds. Reconnect the MP3 My Drive to your PC. 3. If you cannot find the downloaded non-audio files in the removable disk of the Digital Audio, please look in the EDISK directory. Sending files from the MP3 My Drive to your PC The MP3 My Drive can also act as a removable USB Flash disk. You can send files from the disk to your PC with the management system, but the audio files will not be permitted to send due to copyright protection laws. Only files in the EDISK are allowed. 1. Connect the MP3 My Drive to your PC. 2. Select the files to be sent. 3. Click the "Upload" button in the manager software. 4. The transmission interface is then displayed. 27 Caution Do not pull out the MP3 My Drive while a file is being downloaded. It may cause harm to your MP3 My Drive. It is not permitted to transmit music files due to copyright protection laws. The system will display a warning message of "it cannot be sent" if you select MP3 or WMA files. 28 Formatting the memory of the MP3 My Drive Before formatting, be sure that the MP3 My Drive is turned on and connected to your PC. 1. Run the management system icon of the MP3 My Drive on the desktop. 2. Click the "Format" icon and the Format dialog box will be displayed. 3. Click the Start button to begin formatting the MP3 My Drive memory Caution 29 All the files will be deleted by formatting the memory. Do not disconnect while formatting, or your MP3 My Drive may lose system files. We strongly recommend users to not use the Window's formatting tool to format their Drive. If the MP3 My Drive has any problems, please use the Hawking Technologies provided formatting tools to re-format again to solve the problem. To Delete file Instead of directly deleting the files from the MP3 My Drive, the Digital Audio Manager may also be used to remove files from your Drive. 1. Connect the MP3 My Drive to your PC; turn on the MP3 My Drive and run the Digital Audio Manager system. 30 2. 3. Select the files to be deleted. Click the "Delete" button. You can also use the option of "Deletion" in the menu. Once a file is deleted, it cannot be restored. This operation cannot be used to delete the files in your PC. To refresh the USB connection For safer use while connecting the MP3 My Drive and your PC, you can click the "Connection" button in the manager to refresh the USB connection. Internal Memory Display The management system of the MP3 My Drive can display the internal memory by numbers and figures. In the figure illustrated below, yellow represents used memory while green represents available memory. 31 Pre-listen After selecting a song in your PC, you can listen to it by using the Digital Audio management system. 32 1. Choose the desired song you want to listen to. 2. Click the "Pre-listen" button on the top right corner, then enjoy the music from your PC. Now, the Pre-listen button changes into "Stop" button. The music will stop if you click on it again. If you wish to listen to another song, stop the current track and then go on to the next. Trouble Diagnosis 1. The LCD display window shows nothing after turning on the MP3 My Drive. · Check to see if the battery has been inserted. · Check to see if the battery needs replacement. · Try reinserting the battery or replace it. · Take out the battery and insert it correctly after 5 seconds. 2. The buttons are not working. · Check to see if the "Hold" button is on. · If so, release the Hold button. 3. No sound can be heard while playing MP3 files. · Check to see if the volume is too low. If so, turn it up. · Check to see if the MP3 My Drive is connected to your computer. · Check to see if there are any music files in the memory. 4. I cannot download audio files after connection. · Check to see if the Manager Software is setup. · Check to see if the software is working properly. · Check to see if your Motherboard supports the USB devices or needs an upgrade. 5.Some songs show the playback time non-continuouly.. 33 Some MP3 or WMA songs use VBR formats to compress, so the player can not show the playback time normally. You can try to compress it again by selecting the normal rating. 6.Some MP3 songs do not play in the player. Some MP3 songs use the MPEG I Layer1 or Layer2 format for compression, but the player only supports the MPEG I Layer3 and WMA songs. The other songs may still play, but some problems may exist. Therefore, try to compress the songs into MPEG I Layer3 format. 7. Quick recovering steps if any situation occurs under Win XP: Situation I ­ MP3 My Drive is irresponsive while using FAT32 formatting. Use the following to retrieve initiative setup: 1. Remove battery 2. Connect to the USB port 3. Insert battery 4. Switch on the MP3 My Drive 5. Use Digital Audio Manager to re-format with the default FAT12 setting. Situation II ­ PC failed to access voice recorder files because the default voice folder in the MP3 My Drive disappeared: 1.
