This section describes the types of help available. help Product Tour description The tour provides a brief introduction to the HP PSC and its capabilities, so you can start using it immediately. To take the tour at any time, do the following: 1 In the Director, click Help, then choose Product Tour. 2 After the Product Tour dialog box appears, insert the HP PSC 900 Series CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive, and click Search. Setup Poster The Setup Poster provides instructions for setting up and configuring your unit. The printed Setup Poster comes in the box with your unit. Windows and Macintosh instructions are on each side of the poster. This printed Reference Guide contains introductory information on using your HP PSC and provides additional troubleshooting assistance for the installation process. The printed Support and Specifications booklet provides general support information for your HP PSC. The onscreen User's Guide provides detailed information on using your HP PSC and its features. It also provides detailed information on topics ranging from paper types to using other programs with your HP PSC. For Windows Users: Go to the Director, click Help, and then choose User's Guide. For Macintosh Users: Go to the Director, click Tools, and choose View Onscreen Guide. X X Reference Guide X X Support and Specifications Booklet User's Guide X X X X where can I find help? 1 hp psc 900 series help Dialog-box help description For Windows: Clicking Help in a dialog box displays information about options and settings within the dialog box. win mac X To get help while working in a dialog box, click Help in that box. For Macintosh: Select Help from the HP Director menu bar, then select HP AIO Help. You can also display help from the HP Director by clicking Tools, then select View Onscreen Guide from the HP Toolbox. Readme file After you install your software, you can access the Readme file from either the HP PSC 900 Series CD-ROM or the HP PSC 900 Series program folder. To access the Readme file: For Windows: go to the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, choose HP PSC 900 Series, and then choose View the Readme File. For Macintosh: go to the HD:Applications:HP All-in-One Software folder. Internet help and technical support If you have Internet access, you can get help from the HP website at: www.officejetsupport.com The website also provides user forums and answers to frequently-asked questions. Troubleshooting help To access troubleshooting information, go to the Director, click Help, then choose Troubleshooting. Troubleshooting is also available via the Help button that appears on some error messages. X X X X X 2 get help quick start 2 You can perform many functions using either the front panel or the HP PSC 900 Series software. Even if you do not connect your HP PSC to a computer (also called stand-alone use), you can use the front panel to copy, print photos or fax documents. You can change a wide variety of settings using the front-panel buttons and menu system. tutorial This brief tutorial teaches you how to use your HP PSC to: make a copy, adjust copy settings, and change setup options. This is not a comprehensive tutorial; its purpose is to familiarize you with the front panel and the different buttons. It should take about ten minutes to work through the tutorial, after which you can experiment on your own. We highly recommend that you take this tutorial before you start using your HP PSC for daily tasks. Review the table of contents or the index to find about the other front panel tasks covered in this Reference Guide. before you begin 1 Follow the instructions in the Setup Poster to set up your HP PSC. The HP PSC 900 Series software should be installed on your computer prior to connecting the computer to the HP PSC. Obtain a color photograph or picture (perhaps cut from a magazine) that is smaller than Letter or A4 size. You will use this image for tutorial activities. 2 tutorial 3 hp psc 900 series front panel features The front panel is divided into three main regions: From: Use the buttons in this region to indicate where your picture or document is coming from. To: Use the buttons in this region to indicate what you want to do with your image. The buttons in this region also enable you to make changes to the image or document settings. Start: Use the buttons in this region to start your task based on the choices that you made in the From and To regions. From: Scanner or Photo Card: Selects the scanner or the photo card as the image source. The feature is active when a button is lit. To: PC Save, Copy, or Fax: Selects one of three destinations for scanner or photo card image sources. The feature is active when a button is lit. Fax can only receive image sources from the scanner. Start: Black or Color: Start a scan, fax, copy, or photo print in color or black and white. Pressing Black or Color also starts saving a photo or scan to the computer. 4 quick start hp psc 900 series make a copy 1 Open the lid of your HP PSC and place your photo or picture face down in the front right corner of the scanner glass with the sides of the original touching the right and front edges. Top edge of original Notice that the Scanner button is lit in the From region of the front panel. This indicates that the source is coming from the scanner glass. Scanner is the default, so this button is lit unless you insert a photo card into the slot. 2 Press Copy on the front panel. This indicates that you want to make a copy of the picture on the glass. Copy is also the default, so the Copy button is typically lit. If you had wanted to save the picture to the computer, you would have pressed PC Save. If you had wanted to fax the picture, you would have pressed the Fax button instead of the Copy button. For this tutorial, you will continue making a copy. 3 Press Color on the front panel. The default is a single copy. Pressing the Color button on the HP PSC automatically prints one color copy of the picture on the glass. If you had pressed the Black button, the HP PSC would have made a single grayscale copy of your color picture. Place your photo or picture face down on the scanner glass in the front right corner with the sides of the originals touching the right and front edges. Now you will change some copy settings before starting the copy. With the Scanner and Copy buttons lit, press Options on the front panel. The first setting in the Copy menu, Number of Copies, appears on the front panel display. adjust copy settings 1 2 tutorial 5 hp psc 900 series 3 Press Options repeatedly to see all of the settings in the Copy menu. The copy settings Which Size, Copy Quality, Paper Type, Paper Size, Lighter/Darker, Enhancements, Color Intensity, and Set New Defaults display in turn. After Set New Defaults, you return to the first setting, Number of Copies. If the front panel display does not show the Number of Copies setting, navigate to this setting by pressing Options until Number of Copies appears. Now, you are ready to set the number of copies. Use the or to increase or decrease the number of copies. Alternatively, you could enter the number using the numeric keypad. Press once so that the number of copies increases to 2 on the front panel display. Press Black on the front panel. The HP PSC makes two black and white copies of your picture. Notice that you did not have to do anything else but select the number of copies and press a start key. Now you will change multiple settings before making copies. 4 5 6 7 8 With the Scanner and Copy buttons lit, press the Options button. With the Number of Copies setting displayed, press 3 on the numeric keypad. The number of copies changes to 3. Before starting the copies, you are going to change another setting. Press Options once to display the Which Size? setting. Pressing Options keeps the change you just made in Number of Copies and moves to the next Copy menu setting. Notice that the first option in the Which Size? setting is Actual 100%. Whenever you navigate to a setting, the first option that displays for that setting is the default. Now you will change the size of the three copies. 9 10 Press until you reach the Custom 100% option then press Enter. Use this option to reduce or enlarge your picture. 11 Press 5 and then the 0 button on the numeric keypad so that 50% displays, then press Enter. 12 Press Color on the front panel. The HP PSC prints three color copies of your picture, scaled by 50%. You now know how to navigate through the Options settings and change settings. If you do not do anything else with your HP PSC, the settings that you adjusted will return to their defaults within two minutes. The number of copies, will for this exercise, return to one and the copy percentage returns to Actual 100%. You can make adjusted settings permanent using Set New Defaults. 6 quick start hp psc 900 series Next, you will review the Setup menu. setup menu review You normally change Setup menu settings when you set up the HP PSC. Any changes you make in the Setup menu automatically become the default. 1 2 Press Setup. The first submenu Print Report displays. Press Setup repeatedly to view the other submenus. The other submenus are: Speed Dial Setup, Basic Fax Setup, Advanced Fax Setup, and Maintenance. Press Setup. Press 3, then press 6. This selects the Basic Fax Setup menu, then selects the Ring and Beep Volume menu. The Ring and Beep Volume settings appear. Press to select Soft, Loud or Off. Press the Enter button to save this selection. This volume setting is now permanent unless you go back and change it. This completes the brief tutorial. Scanner: Selects the scanner as the image source. The feature is active when the button is lit. Photo Card: Selects the photo card as the image source. The feature is active when the button is lit. PC Save: Selects the computer save destination for scanner or photo card image sources. The feature is active when the button is lit. Copy: Selects the copy destination for scanner or photo card image sources. The feature is active when the button is lit. Fax: Selects the fax destination from scanner image sources. Fax can only receive image sources from the scanner. The feature is active when the button is lit. Setup: Provides access to reports, fax settings, and maintenance functions. Arrows: Scroll through menu settings, through options within settings or to move forward. The left arrow erases characters in a text entry by deleting one character each time the left arrow key is pressed. Proof Sheet: Selects the proof sheet option. A proof sheet, which may be several pages long, shows thumbnail views of all the photos stored on the photo card. The file name, date, and index number appear under each thumbnail. For more information about proof sheets, see print a proof sheet on page 37. Options: Access to various copy, photo, scanning, and faxing options. Cancel: Stops a job, exits menu, or exits button settings. Enter: Selects or saves displayed setting. Keypad: Use the keypad to dial fax numbers, enter values, or enter text. Black: Starts a black and white scan, fax, copy or photo print. Color: Starts a color scan, fax, copy or photo print. Pressing Black or Color also starts saving a photo or a scan to your computer. Depending on your model, your front panel may look slightly different. 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 front panel overview 9 hp psc 900 series use your hp psc with a computer If you connect your HP PSC to a computer, you can work from the front panel or from the HP PSC 900 Series software or from the Director, if you installed the software. review the director The Director is available through the desktop shortcut. For Windows Users: · · Double-click the HP PSC 900 Series shortcut on the Windows desktop, or In the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, choose HP PSC 900 Series, then choose HP Director. Double-click the HP Director shortcut on the desktop. For Macintosh Users: · The HP Director provides centralized access to all the capabilities of the HP all-in-one software. The following figure shows some of the features available through the Director for Windows. 1 2 3 4 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 10 quick start hp psc 900 series Feature 1 Purpose Help: Provides access to onscreen assistance in the form of an onscreen User's Guide, troubleshooting, product tour, Director Help, and information about your HP PSC. Fax: Displays the send fax dialog window where you can enter the fax recipient information, specify the fax quality, color, hard copy attachments, and start a fax job. Settings: Displays dialog windows that allow you to view or change various settings for print, scanning, copy, photo card, Director, maintenance, and Fax. Scan Image: Scans an image and displays it in the HP Image Viewer, if turned on, and then in the HP Photo View Center. Copy: Displays the Copy dialog window where you can select the paper type, number of copies, the color, the size, any of the Creative Copy features, and start a copy. Photo View Center: Displays the Photo View Center dialog window, where you can view and edit images, use creative printing, make a photo album, print, e-mail or fax an image, upload an image to the web, or save an image. Scan Text: Scans text directly to a text editing program. OfficeJetWeb: Launches your browser and accesses the HP OfficeJet website. Address Book: You can access the Windows address book, if you use Outlook Express. Log: Displays a list of faxes recently sent and received. Status: Displays the status window. The following graphic shows some of the features available through the Director for Macintosh. Scan: Scans a document or photo into the HP Image Viewer, where you can select a destination. Scan Chooser: Provides a short cut to the chooser, where you can select the HP PSC as the scanning device. Copy: Copies in black and white or color. Fax: Scans a document and opens the fax program. It is important, however, that you choose the right paper and make sure that it is not damaged. load paper Following is the basic procedure for loading paper. There are specific considerations for loading certain types of paper and film. After you review this procedure, see tips for loading specific types of paper on page 17. For best results, adjust the paper settings each time you change paper types or paper sizes. For more information, see change paper settings for copying on page 21. To load envelopes, see load envelopes on page 19. See load 4 x 6 photo paper on page 20 for more information. 1 Lift the output tray up and slide the paper-width and -length guides to their outermost positions. load paper 15 hp psc 900 series 2 Tap the stack on a flat surface to even the edges of the paper, and then check the paper for the following: ­ Make sure it is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges. ­ Make sure all the paper in the stack is the same size and type, unless you are working with photo paper. Insert paper into the input tray print-side down until it stops. If you are using letterhead, insert the top of the page first. Be careful not to use too much or too little paper. It may be difficult for the printer to grab a sheet of paper when there are only one or two sheets in the paper tray. Check that the stack of paper contains several sheets, but is no higher than the top of the front paper guide. Slide the paper-width and -length guides in until they stop at the edges of the paper. Make sure that the paper stack lies flat in the input tray and fits under the tab of the paper-length guide. 3 4 Do not overfill the input tray, as this may cause paper jams. 5 To prevent printed paper from falling off the tray, fully extend the output-tray extender. 16 load paper and load originals hp psc 900 series tips for loading specific types of paper The following table provides guidelines for loading certain types of paper and transparency film. For best results, adjust the paper settings each time you change paper types and paper sizes. For more information, see change paper settings for copying on page 21. Paper HP papers Tips · HP Premium Inkjet paper: Locate the gray arrow on the nonprinting side of the paper, and then insert paper with the arrow side facing up. · HP Premium or Premium Plus Photo Paper: Load the glossy (print) side down. Always load at least five sheets of regular paper in the input tray first, and then place the photo paper on top of the regular paper. · HP Premium Inkjet Transparency Film: Insert the film so that the white transparency strip (with arrows and the HP logo) is on top and is going into the tray first. · HP Iron-On T-shirt Transfers: Flatten the transfer sheet completely before using it; do not load curled sheets. (To prevent curling, keep transfer sheets sealed in the original package until you are ready to use them.) Manually feed one sheet at a time, with the unprinted side facing down (the blue stripe faces up). · HP Greeting Cards, Glossy Greeting Cards, or Textured Greeting Cards: Insert a small stack of HP greeting-card paper, with the print-side down into the input tray until it stops. · HP Restickable Inkjet Stickers: Place the sheets in the input tray, print-side (sticker-side) down. Legal-size paper Fully extend the paper-length guide and make sure that the input tray is pushed all the way in. Postcards Insert a stack of postcards with the print-side down into the input tray until it (only works with stops. Line the postcards up on the right side of the input tray, slide the width printing) guide up against the left side of the cards, and then slide the length guide in until it stops. · Always use letter- or A4-size label sheets designed for use with HP inkjet Labels (only works with products (like Avery Inkjet Labels), and make sure that the labels are not printing) over two years old. · Fan the stack of labels to make sure none of the pages are sticking together. · Place a stack of label sheets on top of standard paper in the input tray, print-side down. Do not insert labels one sheet at a time. tips for loading specific types of paper 17 hp psc 900 series Paper 4" x 6" Photo paper (works only with printing) Tips Lift the output tray to expose the photo tray. Make sure the instruction insert has been removed. Insert a stack of 4" x 6" photo papers print-side down into the photo tray. Lower the output tray, then slide the photo tray release button into the correct position. See load 4 x 6 photo paper on page 20. When the button is pushed into position, the photo tray is engaged. Paper is pulled only from the photo tray. Continuous Continuous banner paper is also known as computer or z-fold paper. (banner) paper · Before loading banner paper, remove all other paper from the input tray, (only works with then raise the output tray above the catch on the right side. printing) Raise the output tray above the catch on the right side. · If you use non-HP banner paper, use 20-lb. paper and fan the paper before loading it. · Verify that the stack of banner paper contains at least five pages in the stack. · Carefully tear off the perforated edge strips from both sides of the paper stack, if any, and unfold and refold the paper to make sure the pages do not stick together. · Put the paper in the input tray so that the unattached edge is at the top of the stack. Insert the first edge into the input tray until it stops, as shown in the figure above. 18 load paper and load originals hp psc 900 series load envelopes Your HP PSC provides two methods for working with envelopes. Do not use shiny or embossed envelopes, or envelopes that have clasps or windows. · If you are printing one envelope, slide the envelope into the envelope slot, which is located on the right side toward the back of the output tray. Insert the envelope with the flap up and on the left, as shown in the illustration. Slide the envelope on the top until it stops. · If you are printing multiple envelopes, remove all paper from the input tray, and then slide a stack of envelopes into the tray, with the envelope flaps up and to the left (print-side down), until they stop. Adjust the left paper guide against the envelopes (be careful not to bend the envelopes). Make sure the envelopes fit within the tray (do not overload it). Consult the help files in your word processing software for details on how to format text for printing on envelopes. load envelopes 19 hp psc 900 series load 4 x 6 photo paper The HP PSC contains a special tray that lets you load 4-inch by 6-inch photo paper for printing from your computer or direct from a photo card. 1 2 3 4 Lift the output tray. Make sure the instruction insert has been removed. Slide the photo tray release button toward you, if it has been pushed in. Place the photo cards into the photo tray with the print side down. If you are using tabbed photo paper, place the tabbed photo paper into the photo tray so that the tabbed end feeds in last. 5 6 Lower the output tray. Slide the photo tray release button into the correct position, as follows: ­ If you are using 4" x 6" photo paper with a removable tab, push the photo tray release buttin in until the button reaches the first position. ­ If you are using 4" x 6" photo paper without a removable tab, push the photo tray release button in further to the second position. 20 load paper and load originals hp psc 900 series This ensures that the photo paper is loaded correctly and the photo tray is engaged. change paper settings for copying We recommend that you change these settings when you load different paper to ensure the best print quality. You can change copy settings from the front panel or from the Director. When you change settings using the front panel, the copy settings are reset two minutes after the unit completes the copy. HP recommends paper type settings according to the type of paper you're using. For more information, see recommended paper-type settings for copying in the onscreen User's Guide. It is important to use the front right corner when using the copy or scanning feature. If you are copying from a transparency (that is, your original is printed on transparency film), place a blank piece of paper on top of the transparency. You can scan just about anything: · · · · Photos Magazine articles Text documents 3D objects (be careful not to scratch the glass) -- to put into catalogs and flyers. Because the scanned image or text is in an electronic format, you can bring it into your word processor or graphics program and modify it to suite your needs. You can: · · · Scan text from an article into your word processor and quote it in a report, saving you a lot of retyping. Scan in a logo and use it in your publishing software, allowing you to print business cards and brochures for yourself. Scan in photos of your kids and e-mail them to relatives, create a photographic inventory of your house or office, or create an electronic scrapbook. To use the scan features, your HP PSC and computer must be connected and turned on. The HP PSC 900 Series software should also be installed on your computer prior to connecting the computer to the HP PSC. 23 hp psc 900 series scan an original You can start a scan from your computer or from your HP PSC. 1 Load your original. For more information, see load originals on the glass on page 22. Press Scanner, then press PC Save, if not already lit. This saves the scan to your computer. Press Black or Color. For Windows, a scan of the original appears in the HP Image Viewer. For Macintosh, a scan of the original appears in the HP Workplace. In the HP Image Viewer, you can edit the scanned image. When you are done viewing the image, click Accept. See the onscreen User's Guide for more information about editing in the pre-scan view. The HP PSC does a final scan of the original and sends the image to the HP Photo View Center in Windows. In the HP Photo View Center, you can: ­ ­ ­ ­ edit images, including adding text creative printing create and print photo albums send to fax, e-mail, web page, or other programs. Reduce or enlarge the size of the images copied from 25% to 400% of the copy's original size. (Percentages may vary between models.) Make the copy lighter or darker, adjust the color intensity, select the number of copies, and specify the quality of the copies you make. Enlarge a photo, create a poster, make wallet-size photos, make high-quality copies of photos using special photo paper, or create transparencies. · · make copies You can make copies using the front panel of your unit or using your computer. Many copy features are available using either method. However, you may find that the software offers easier access to special copy features. All copy settings that you select on the front panel are reset two minutes after the unit completes the copy, unless you save the settings as the default settings. Tip! You can also enter the number of desired copies using the keypad. 5 Press Enter, then press Black or Color. increase copy speed or quality The HP PSC provides three options that affect copy speed and quality. · Best produces the highest quality for all paper and eliminates the banding (striping) effect that sometimes occurs in solid areas. Best copies more slowly than the other quality settings. Best is automatically selected when you specify the paper type as photo paper. Normal delivers high-quality output and is the recommended setting for most of your copying. Normal is faster than Best. Fast copies faster than the Normal setting. The text is of comparable quality to the Normal setting, but the graphics may be of lower quality. Using Fast also cuts down on the frequency of replacing your print cartridges, because it uses less ink. Load the input tray with the appropriate paper. Load your original on the glass. If you are copying from a Photo Card, insert the photo card into the appropriate slot. Press Scanner, then press Copy, if not already lit. Press Options until Copy Quality appears. Press until the desired copy quality appears, then press Enter. Press Black or Color. · · 1 2 3 4 5 6 reduce or enlarge a copy You can reduce or enlarge a copy of an original using predefined settings, such as Fit to Page, Poster, or wallet, by selecting your own reduction/enlargement percentages. These settings are available when Scanner and Copy buttons are lit. If the margins of your full-size original are smaller than the minimum margin settings supported by your unit, they will be cut off during the copy process. To get a full copy, use the Fit to Page feature. For more information on this feature, see fit a copy to the page on page 31. For more information on your unit's margins, see Margins in the Support and Specifications booklet. Press Options repeatedly until Lighter/Darker appears. Press to lighten the copy or to darken it. The circle moves to the left or right, depending on the button you press. Press Enter to select the setting. change color intensity You can adjust color intensity to make colors on your copy more vivid or more subtle. 1 2 3 Press Scanner, then press Copy, if not already lit. Press Options repeatedly until Color Intensity appears. Press to make the image paler or to make the image more vivid. The range of color intensity values appears as a circle on a scale on the front-panel display. Press Enter to select the setting. 4 enhance text sharpness and photo colors Use Text enhancements to sharpen edges of black text. Use Photo for photographs or pictures to enhance light colors that may otherwise appear white. Text enhancement is the default option. You can turn off Text enhancement by selecting Photo or None if: · · · · Stray dots of color surround some text on your copies. Large, black typefaces look splotchy (not smooth). Thin, colored objects or lines contain black sections. Horizontal grainy or white bands appear in light- to medium-gray areas. Press Scanner, then press Copy, if not already lit.
