With proper care, this transceiver should provide you with years of trouble-free operation. We want to take a couple of moments of your time to thank you for making the IC-V85 your radio of choice, and hope you agree with Icom's philosophy of "technology first." This device emits Radio Frequency (RF) energy. Extreme caution should be observed when operating this device. If you have any questions regarding RF exposure and safety standards please refer to the Federal Communications Commission Office of Engineering and Technology's report on Evaluating Compliance with FCC Guidelines for Human Radio frequency Electromagnetic Fields (OET Bulletin 65) RWARNING! NEVER connect the transceiver to an AC outlet. This may pose a fire hazard or result in an electric shock. NEVER connect a power supply of more than 16 V DC through the optional CP-19R CIGARETTE LIGHTER CABLE to the [DC 11V] jack to prevent damaging the transceiver. NEVER connect the transceiver to a power source using reverse polarity. This will ruin the transceiver. RWARNING! NEVER hold the transceiver so that the antenna is very close to, or touching exposed parts of the body, especially the face or eyes, while transmitting. The transceiver will perform best if the microphone is 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) away from the lips and the transceiver is vertical. RWARNING! NEVER operate the transceiver with a headset or other audio accessories at high volume levels. Hearing experts advise against continuous high volume operation. If you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or discontinue use. NEVER cut the DC power cable between the DC plug and fuse holder. If an incorrect connection is made after cutting, the transceiver may be damaged. NEVER expose the transceiver to rain, snow or any liquids. The transceiver may be damaged. NEVER operate or touch the transceiver with wet hands. This may result in an electric shock or ruin the transceiver. RWARNING! NEVER operate the transceiver while driving a vehicle. Safe driving requires your full attention-- anything less may result in an accident. NEVER attempt to charge alkaline or dry cell batteries. Be aware that external DC power connections will charge batteries inside the battery case. This will damage not only the battery case but also the transceiver. DO NOT push the PTT when not actually desiring to transmit. ii PRECAUTIONS--continued DO NOT operate the transceiver near unshielded electrical blasting caps or in an explosive atmosphere. The transceiver will become hot when operating it continuously for long periods. AVOID using or placing the transceiver in direct sunlight or in areas with temperatures below 10°C (+14°F) or above +60°C (+140°F). Place the unit in a secure place to avoid inadvertent use by children. AVOID the use of chemical agents such as benzine or alcohol when cleaning, as they can damage the transceiver's surfaces. Even when the transceiver power is OFF, a slight current still flows in the circuits. Remove the battery pack or case from the transceiver when not using it for a long time. Otherwise, the battery pack (Li-Ion: BP-227) or installed batteries will become exhausted.
