Tighten the cap clockwise until ratcheting clicks are heard. engine and do not smoke or allow open flames or sparks near the vehicle when refueling. Fuel may be under pressure. Turn the cap one-half turn and wait for any ``hissing'' sound to stop to prevent fuel from spraying out and possible personal injury. Then remove cap. IPD036M To open the fuel filler door, push the opener switch, located on the lower side of the driver side arm rest. To lock, close the fuel filler door securely. IPD011M WARNING Gasoline is extremely flammable and highly explosive under certain conditions. Always stop Use only a genuine fuel filler cap as a replacement. It has a built-in safety valve needed for proper operation of the fuel system and emission control system. An incorrect cap can result in a serious malfunction and possible injury. 2-11 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS SEATS Operating tips The power seat motor has an auto-reset overload protection circuit. If the motor stops during operation, wait 30 seconds, then reactivate the switch. Do not operate the power support seat for a long period of time when the engine is off. This will discharge the battery. CAUTION If fuel is spilled on the car body, flush it away with water to avoid paint damage. POWER SUPPORT SEAT WARNING Do not adjust the driver's seat while driving. The seatback should not be reclined any more than needed for comfort. Seat belts are most effective when the passenger sits well back and straight up in the seat. If the seat is reclined, the risk of sliding under the lap belt and being injured is increased. Do not leave children unattended inside the vehicle. They may inadvertently activate switches. FUEL FILLER CAP HOLDER Forward and backward IPD012M Put the fuel filler cap on the cap holder while refueling. HEAD RESTRAINTS Press the upper or lower side of the switch to adjust the head restraints to the desired height. 2-13 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (AIR BAG SYSTEM) This Supplemental Restraint System section contains important information concerning the driver and passenger air bags and pretensioner seat belt. The Supplemental Restraint System Air Bag can help reduce impact force to the driver and to the front passenger in certain frontal collisions. The air bags are designed to supplement the crash protection provided by the driver and front passenger seat belts and are not a substitute for them. Seat belts should always be correctly worn (See ``Seat belt'' for instructions and precautions on seat belt usage.) The air bags and pre-tensioner seat belts will operate only when the ignition switch is in the ``ON'' or ``START'' position. WARNING The air bags ordinarily will not inflate in the event of a side impact, rear impact, roll over, or lower severity frontal collision; so always wear your seat belts to help reduce the risk or severity of injury in various kinds of accidents. The seat belts and the air bags are most effective when you are sitting back and upright in the seat. Air bags inflate with great force. If you are unrestrained, leaning forward, sitting sideways or out of position in any way, you are at greater risk of injury or death in a crash and may also receive serious or fatal injuries SIP0029 Adjust the top of the head restraints level with the top of your ears. WARNING Head restraints should be adjusted properly as they may provide significant protection against whiplash injury. Do not remove them. Check the adjustment after someone else uses the seat. 2-14 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS from the air bag if you are up against it when it inflates. Always sit back against the seatback and use the seat belts. IPD061 IPD063 IPD062 IPD064 2-15 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS WARNING Never let children ride unrestrained as shown in the previous illustrations. Children may be severely injured or killed when the air bag inflates if they are not properly restrained. Also, never install a rear facing child restraint in the front seat. See ``Child restraints for infants and small children'' for details. The pre-tensioner is encased with the seat belt's retractor. These seat belts are used the same as conventional seat belts. When the pre-tensioner seat belt activates, smoke is released and a loud noise may be heard. The smoke is not harmful, but care should be taken not to intentionally inhale it, as it may cause irritation and choking. If any abnormality occurs in the pre-tensioner system, the seat belt warning light will flash intermittently after the ignition key is turned to the ``ON'' or ``START'' position. In this case, the pre-tensioner seat belt will not function properly. WARNING No unauthorized changes should be made to any components or wiring of the pre-tensioner seat belt system. This is to prevent accidental retraction of the pretensioner seat belt or damage to the pre-tensioner seat belt operation. Tampering with the pretensioner seat belt system may result in serious personal injury. Work around and on the pretensioner system should be done WARNING The pre-tensioner seat belt cannot be reused after activation. It must be replaced together with the retractor as a unit. If the vehicle becomes involved in a frontal collision but the pretensioner is not activated, be sure to have the pre-tensioner system checked and, if necessary, replaced by your INFINITI dealer. Pre-tensioner seat belt system The front seat pre-tensioner seat belt system activates with the air bag. Working with the seat belt retractor, it helps to tighten the seat belt when the vehicle becomes involved in certain types of frontal collisions. 2-16 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS by an authorized INFINITI dealer. Installation of electrical equipment should also be done by an authorized INFINITI dealer. Unauthorized electrical test equipment and probing devices should not be used on the pre-tensioner seat belt system. When selling your vehicle, we request that you inform the buyer about the pre-tensioner seat belt system and guide the buyer to the appropriate sections in this Owner's Manual. If you need to dispose of the pre-tensioner or scrap the vehicle, contact an authorized INFINITI dealer. Correct pretensioner disposal procedures are set forth in the appropriate INFINITI Service Manual. Incorrect disposal procedures could cause personal injury. 2-17 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS indicate a fire but care should be taken not to intentionally inhale it, as it may cause irritation and choking. Those with a history of breathing trouble should get fresh air promptly. Air bags, along with the use of seat belts, help to cushion the impact force on the face and chest of the occupant. They can help save lives and reduce serious injuries. However, an inflating air bag may cause facial abrasions or other injuries. Air bags do not provide restraint to the lower body. The seat belts should be correctly worn and the driver and passenger seated upright as far as practical away from the steering wheel or dash board. Since the air bag inflates quickly in order to help to protect the occupant, the force of the air bag inflating can increase the risk of injury if the occupant is too close to or is against the air bag module during inflation. The air bag will deflate quickly after the collision is over. SIP0040 Air bag system The driver air bag is located in the center of the steering wheel; the front passenger air bag is mounted in the dashboard above the glove box. The air bag system is designed to inflate in higher severity frontal collisions, although it may inflate if the forces in another type of collision are similar to those of a higher severity frontal impact. It may not inflate in certain frontal collisions. Vehicle damage (or lack of it) is not always an indication of proper air bag operation. When the air bag inflates, a fairly loud noise may be heard, followed by release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not 2-18 PRE-DRIVING CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS The air bags will operate only when the ignition switch is in the ``ON'' or ``START'' position. WARNING Right after inflation, several air bag system components will be hot. Do not touch them; you may severely burn yourself. No unauthorized changes should be made to any components or wiring of the air bag system. This is to prevent accidental inflation of the air bag or damage to the air bag system. Tampering with the air bag system may result in serious personal injury. Tampering includes changes to the steering wheel and the instrument panel assembly by placing material over the steering wheel pad and above the dashboard, or by installing additional trim material around the air bag system. Do not attach any objects to the steering wheel pad and to the instrument panel. Also, do not place any objects between any occupant and the steering wheel or instrument panel. Such objects may become dangerous projectiles and cause injury if the air bag inflates. Work around and on the air bag system should be done by an authorized INFINITI dealer. Installation of electrical equipment should also be done by an authorized INFINITI dealer. The SRS wiring harnesses* should not be modified or disconnected. Unauthorized electrical test equipment and probing devices should not be used on the air bag system. * The SRS wiring harnesses are covered with yellow insulation either just before the harness connectors or for the complete harness, for easy identification. 2-19
