Important Safety Information
In order to prevent fire, electric shock, or injury to the user, always observe the following guidelines: · · · · Before using this unit, make sure to read the instructions below and the Owner's Manual. Do not open or modify the unit or its AC adaptor in any way. Do not attempt to repair the unit, or replace parts within it. Refer all servicing to your retailer or authorized JazzMutant distributor, as listed on the Information page. Never use or store the unit in places that are: · · · · · · · Subject to extreme temperature (e.g., direct sunlight, an enclosed vehicule, near a heating duct, on top of heat-generating equipment) Damp (e.g., baths washroom, on wet floors) Humid Exposed to rain or snow Dusty Subject to high levels of vibration
Be sure to use only the AC adaptor supplied with the unit. Also, make sure the line voltage at the installation matches the input voltage specified on outside of the AC adaptor. Other AC adaptors may use a different polarity or be designed for a different voltage, so their use could result in damage, malfunction, or electric shock. Do not excessively twist or bend the power cord, nor place heavy objects on it. Doing so can damage the cord, producing severed elements and short circuits. Damaged electrical cords are fire and shock hazards! Do not allow any objects (e.g., flammable material, coins, pins) or liquid of any kind (water, soft drinks, etc.) to penetrate the unit. In the case of any of the following events, immediately switch off the unit, remove the AC adaptor from the outlet, and request service by your retailer or authorized JazzMutant distributor: · · The AC adaptor or the power-supply cord as been damaged; Smoke or unusual odours are observed;
·
· ·
8
· · · · · ·
Objects have fallen into, or liquid has spilled onto the unit; The unit has been exposed to rain (or otherwise has become wet); The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance.
In households with small children, an adult should provide supervision until the child is capable of following all the rules essential for the safe operation of the unit. Protect the unit from strong impact. Do not drop it! Do not force the unit's power-supply cord to share an outlet with an unreasonable number of other devices. Be especially careful when using extension cords--the total power used by all devices you have connected to an extension chord must never exceed the cord's power rating (watts/amps). Excessive loads can cause the insulation on the cord to heat up or even melt down. The unit and the AC adaptor should be located so their location or position does not interfere with the proper ventilation of the unit. Always grasp only the output plug or the body of the AC adaptor when plugging or unplugging the unit. Any accumulation of dust between the AC adaptor and the power outlet can result in poor insulation and possibly cause a fire. Periodically wipe away such dust with a dry cloth. Also, disconnect the power plug from the outlet whenever the unit is to remain unused for an extended period of time. Try to prevent cords and cables from becoming entangled. Also, all cords and cables should be placed so they are out of the reach of children. Never step on, nor place heavy objects on the unit. Never handle the AC adaptor body, or its output plugs, with wet hands when plugging into, or unplugging from, an outlet or this unit. If you need to move the unit, make sure to have a firm grip, to protect yourself from injury and the unit from damage. Also, don't forget to disconnect all cords and cables! Before cleaning the unit, turn off the power and unplug the AC adaptor from the outlet. Whenever you suspect the possibility of lightning in your area, disconnect the AC adaptor from the outlet.

What's Included in the Box?
· · · The main thing that's included, of course, is your Lemur multitouch control surface. Ethernet cable intended for direct connections between the Lemur and your computer. External power supply: switching, 100-240V, 50-60Hz AC input; 12V DC 2 Amp / 24W output. This is a fairly hefty output. Using a power supply with a lower output rating poses a serious fire hazard. CD containing the JazzEditor applications for Mac and Windows that you'll use to program the Lemur, a PDF version of this documentation, a demo of Max/MSP, and useful Max goodies for working with the Lemur.

Notes for Proper Operation
Power Supply
· · · Do not use this unit on the same power circuit with any device that generates line noise (such as an electric motor or variable lightning system). The AC adaptor will generate heat after long hours of continuous use. This is normal and should not cause any alarm. Before connecting the unit to other devices, turn off the power to all units. This will help prevent malfunctions and/or damage to speakers or other devices.
Placement
· Using the unit near power amplifiers (or other equipment containing large power transformers) may induce "hum". To alleviate this problem, change the orientation of this unit, or move it farther away from the source of interference. This device may interfere with radio and television reception. Do not use this device in the vincinity of such receivers. Noise may be produced if wireless communications devices, such as cell phones, are operated in the vicinity of this unit. Such noise could occur when receiving or initiating a call, or while conversing. Should you experience such problems, try relocating the wireless devices so that they are further from this LEMUR, or switch them off. Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, place it near devices that radiate heat, leave it inside an enclosed vehicle, or otherwise subject it to temperature extremes. When moved from one location to another where there is a major change in temperature and/or humidity, water droplets (condensation) may form inside the unit. Damage or malfunction may result if you attempt to use the unit in this condition. Therefore, before using the unit, you must leave it idle for several hours until the condensation has completely evaporated.
· ·
· ·
Maintenance
· For everyday cleaning wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth or one that has been slightly dampened with water. To remove stubborn dirt, use a cloth with a mild, non-
13
abrasive detergent. Afterwards, be sure to wipe the unit thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth. · Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind; such chemical may cause discoloration and/or deformation.
Additional Precautions
· · · When working with the unit's buttons, display, or other controls or when using its cords and cables try to be reasonably gentle. Rough handling can lead to malfunctions. Never strike or apply strong pressure to the display. When connecting/disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itself-never pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cable's internal elements. When transporting the unit, please ensure it is properly packed to protect it from shock and damage, using, for example, a sturdy laptop case (15" or 17" should fit). Place an additional protective layer over the display. Use the Ethernet cable supplied with the unit. If using some other cable, please ensure it is not a crossover Ethernet cable.

If you don't see the yellow Lemur but you are sure the unit is turned on and plugged in, the unit may be malfunctioning. Please contact your JazzMutant retailer or distributor for technical support and/or repair service.
Lemur Networks
The Lemur uses an Ethernet-based network to communicate with your computer. This allows it to be connected directly to your computer with a single Ethernet cable, or placed on a local area network. So, first, you have to decide how you want to connect. You may want to use a local area network if any of the following are true:
17
· · ·
You use your computer's Ethernet port to connect to the internet, and you want to stay connected while you use your Lemur. You use a wireless connection to the internet with a wireless router, and you would like to access your Lemur wirelessly by connecting it to your router. You have several Lemur devices you would like to use to control your computer at the same time (lucky you!).
You may want to connect your Lemur directly to you computer with a single cable if any of the following are true: · · Your Lemur is the only Ethernet device you have (either because you don't own any others or you connect wirelessly to other Ethernet network devices) You are looking for the simplest possible configuration for live performance
First, we'll discuss the Lemur Settings Window where you can setup the Lemur side of your configuration. Then we'll discuss how to configure your Lemur in the direct connection and router scenarios.
Basic Setup Using the Lemur Settings Window
· Press the Settings button on top of the Lemur. You'll see the following screen, although the details will be different for your setup.
18
·
To check if you've successfully connected your Lemur to your computer or a router, check the Media display near the bottom of the screen. If connected, it will report the speed of the connection (in the screen shown, it is 10 Megabits per second). If there is a problem, the Media will be displayed as Disconnected. To use a fixed IP address to the Lemur (useful when you are connecting directly to the computer), touch the words Static IP. To use DHCP to assign the IP address automatically (best when using a router), touch Automatic using DHCP.
·
The current IP address is displayed to the right of the word IP. If DHCP is assigned and the unit is trying to find a DHCP server, the words Seeking DHCP will be displayed (as shown below).
It is useful to keep the Lemur Settings Window open while configuring and troubleshooting your network connection.
Connecting a Lemur Directly to Your Computer
First, we'll configure the Lemur to use a fixed IP address. The instructions for doing this will be the same whether you're using a Mac or a Windows machine. · Turn on your Lemur and connect the Ethernet cable supplied with your Lemur to the Ethernet jack on the back of the unit. Then connect the other end of the cable to your computer's Ethernet jack. Check the Settings Window on the Lemur. If your computer is turned on and connected, the Media display should report the connection speed. If it says Disconnected, make sure your computer is turned on, then check the cable and connections. We'll configure the Lemur to use a fixed IP address. Touch the words Static IP and touch the Apply button at the bottom of the screen. Next, drag your finger over the IP address value. Use the "keypad" at the right of the screen to enter an IP address. If you don't need to use a particular address, use 169.254.0.2. Ensure that the NetMask is 255.255.255.0 (touch the NetMask value and use the keypad if it's necessary to change the current value). For Gateway, enter 0.0.0.0. 19
·
· ·
· ·
Once you're finished, touch the Apply button. Your setting should look similar to this:
Now you will need to configure your computer's network settings to work with this address as follows. First we'll talk about how to do this on Mac OS X, then on Windows XP.
Mac OS X Direct Configuration
These settings only apply to connecting your computer to your Lemur directly with a single Ethernet cable. For other configurations (which we recommend if you use a router), see the section below entitled Using a Lemur in a Local Area Network. · · Open the Network Preferences panel by choosing Location -> Network Preferences... from the Apple menu. Once the Network Preferences window appears, choose Built-in Ethernet from the Show menu. If Built-in Ethernet does not appear in the menu, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show menu, and make sure Built-in Ethernet is checked. If it is already checked, ensure that the cable is connected and the Lemur is turned on. We will only need to be concerned with the TCP/IP settings, which appear by default. You have two options for these changing these settings.
