All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the product is operated. 2. Retain Instructions. The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference. 3. Heed Warnings. All warnings on the product and in the operating instructions should be adhered to. 4. Follow Instructions. All operating and use instructions should be followed. 5. Water and Moisture. The product should not be used near water ­ for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool, and the like. 6. Accessories. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The product may fall, causing serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage to the product. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the product. Any mounting of the product should follow the manufacturer's instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer. 7. Wall or Ceiling Mounting. The product should be mounted on a wall or ceiling only when and as recommended by the manufacturer. Important Safety Precautions! 12. Safety Check. The product has been exposed to rain or water; or b. The product does not operate normally when following the operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions, as an improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to its normal operation; or c. The product has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged; or d. The product does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance. 10. Attachments. SPEAKER PLACEMENT Front Speakers Surround Speakers 150-180 cm The front speakers should be placed the same distance from each other as they are from the listening position. They should be placed at about the same height from the floor as the listeners' ears will be, or they may be angled toward the listeners. The two surround speakers should be placed slightly behind the listening position and, ideally, should face each other and be at a level higher than the listeners' ears. If that is not possible, they may be placed on a wall behind the listening position, facing forward. The surround speakers should not call attention to themselves. Experiment with their placement until you hear a diffuse, ambient sound accompanying the mainprogram material heard in the front speakers. SCS SATPair 178 speakers are perfect for bringing music to additional rooms in your home. If your receiver or amplifier is equipped with A/B speaker switching, simply connect the pair of speakers to the unused pair of speaker terminals on your receiver, following the directions in the Speaker Connections section. If you plan on playing both pairs of speakers simultaneously, check with the manufacturer of your receiver or amplifier to find out whether that use is recommended. 3 MOUNTING OPTIONS Satellites and Surrounds On shelves. Wall-Mounting The customer is responsible for proper selection and use of mounting hardware, available through hardware stores, to properly and safely wall-mount the speakers. SPEAKER CONNECTIONS Connection Tips It is important to connect both speakers identically: (+) on the speaker to (+) on the amplifier and (­) on the speaker to (­) on the amplifier. Wiring "out of phase" results in thin sound, weak bass and a poor stereo image. With the advent of multichannel surround-sound systems, connecting all of the speakers in your system with the correct polarity remains equally important in order to preserve the proper ambience and directionality of the program material. Stereo If you are using the JBL SCS SATPair178 in a stereo system, connect them to the Left and Right speaker outputs of your amplifier/receiver. Surround If you are using the JBL SCS SATPair178 as front or rear speakers in a surround system, connect them to the appropriate front or rear Left and Right outputs according to the instructions included with your surround amplifier/receiver. Separate and strip the ends of the speaker wire as shown. Speakers and electronics terminals have corresponding (+) and (­) terminals. Most manufacturers of speakers and electronics, including JBL, use red to denote the (+) terminal and black for the (­) terminal. 4 TROUBLESHOOTING If there is no sound from any of the speakers: · Check that receiver/amplifier is on and a source is playing. · Check all wires and connections between receiver/ amplifier and speakers. Make sure all wires are connected. Make sure none of the speaker wires are frayed, cut or punctured. · Review proper operation of your receiver/amplifier. If there is no sound coming from one speaker: · Check the "Balance" control on your receiver/amplifier. · Check all wires and connections between receiver/ amplifier and speakers. Make sure all wires are connected. Make sure none of the speaker wires are frayed, cut or punctured. · In Dolby Digital or DTS® modes, make sure that the receiver/processor is configured so that the speaker in question is enabled. If there is no sound from the center speaker: · Check all wires and connections between receiver/ amplifier and speaker. Make sure all wires are connected. Make sure none of the speaker wires are frayed, cut or punctured. · If your receiver/processor is set in Dolby Pro Logic mode, make sure the center speaker is not in phantom mode. · If your receiver/processor is set in Dolby Digital or DTS® mode, make sure the receiver/processor is configured so that the center speaker is enabled. If the system plays at low volumes but shuts off as volume is increased: · Check all wires and connections between receiver/ amplifier and speakers. Make sure all wires are connected. Make sure none of the speaker wires are frayed, cut or punctured. · If more than one pair of main speakers is being used, check the minimum impedance requirements of your receiver/amplifier. If there is low (or no) bass output: · Make sure the connections to the left and right "Speaker Inputs" have the correct polarity (+ and ­). · If a powered subwoofer is used, make sure that the subwoofer is plugged in and turned on. · In Dolby Digital or DTS® modes, make sure your receiver/processor is configured so that the subwoofer and LFE output are enabled. If there is no sound from the surround speakers: · Check all wires and connections between receiver/ amplifier and speakers. Make sure all wires are connected. Make sure none of the speaker wires are frayed, cut or punctured. · Review proper operation of your receiver/amplifier and its surround-sound features. · Make sure the movie or TV show you are watching is recorded in a surroundsound mode.
