Do not use the product for purposes other than those specified in this User Guide. Do not let the product get wet or keep it in a damp place for a long time. It will be considered as a failure by submersion and will not be serviced free of charge. Furthermore, it may permanently damage the product, so the product may become un-repairible. Pay attention to the directions when connecting a USB cable to your PC or the product. When the USB cable is connected in the wrong direction, the PC or the product may be damaged. Avoid excessive bending of the USB cable or using it under heavy pressure. If you disassemble or modify the product, the warranty will be void and it may be excluded from our services. When you smell the product burning or it becomes overheated, press the Reset button and contact our Customer Support Team or Service Center. Always backup important data. The manufacturer is not responsible for any data loss, and the integrity of the data stored in the device under service cannot be guaranteed. iAUDIO F1 Precautions for Product Use 7 Malfunctions may occur when you handle the device with wet hands. When you listen to the device at a high volume for an extended period, you may experience hearing problems. Take care not to use the product in a place where there is severe static electricity because this may cause malfunctions. Always backup important files. All data stored on the device may be deleted when it is serviced. Our service centers do not backup the files stored on the device. Please note that Cowon Systems is not responsible for data loss of any product returned for warranty service. Be sure to disconnect the power cables of your PC and AC power adapter when there is thunder and lightning because there is a danger of lightning strikes and subsequent fire. Always use the USB cable provided by Cowon Systems. iAUDIO F1 8 Before Getting Started 1. What is iAUDIO F1? A unique brand of multimedia player produced by Cowon Systems, iAUDIO F1 is an ultra-compact portable digital audio device that supports playing of multimedia files including MP3, listening to/recording of FM radio, and recording through an embedded mic or line-in terminal. Portable, Stylish and Ultra-compact Design iAUDIO F1 is easy to carry with its compact size of 75.5mm X 35.5mm X 18.3mm and design inspired by F1 racing machines. Up to 22 Hours of Continuous Playback with Internal Battery iAUDIO F1 allows up to 22 hours of continuous playback after fully charging, thanks to its excellent power-saving circuit. (Based on Cowon's test environment.) Powerful 36mW Sound (with 16 Ohm earphones) More than enough power with 18mw + 18mW output lets you can enjoy richer, delicate sound. Voice Recording With the built-in high-fidelity microphone, iAUDIO allows you to record voice at the level of dedicated voice recorders. You can record important meetings or lectures using this feature, which can be saved in your PC for repeated listening at any time. Direct Encoding (Line-in Recording) iAUDIO provides a direct encoding feature by which you can record one-on-one with an external audio device. This means that you can connect the iAUDIO 3.5 mm Line-in terminal with the output terminals of external audio devices with a bi-directional stereo cable. Using this feature, you can receive direct input from audio devices such as a walkman, MD (mini disk), old LP phonograph or TV, and record them with iAUDIO in various formats of digital files. Listen to FM Radio and Record It at the Same Time You can listen to FM radio and record it on iAUDIO at the same time (scheduled recording is also possible), which is very useful for studying language. Also, the Preset feature allows you to assign channel numbers for your preferred radio stations. LCD Display Track information Left/Right output graphics Progress bar Current Track /Total Tracks JetEffect (BBE, M3B, 3D, MP) 5 Band EQ BIT RATE Section Playing Repeat Boundary Battery Level Hold Mode The battery level icon indicates the time remaining for battery use. The number of bars decreases as more battery is used. For some batteries, the number of bars in the battery icon may change irregularly while the stored power capacity is being sensed, but this is normal. The icon will begin blinking when the battery is used up, and iAUDIO automatically powers off about 30 minutes after this. iAUDIO F1 Before Getting Started 6. Charing iAUDIO using the AC Adapter To charge the battery of iAUDIO F1 using the AC adapter, 15 1. Connect the AC adapter to an outlet and the Line-in terminal of iAUDIO. 2. Upon connection, iAUDIO will be automatically powered on and battery charging begins 3. When charging is completed, the following figure appears on LCD. - Never connect the AC adapter to the iAUDIO earphone jack or other audio devices. - When using iAUDIO for the first time, or using it after a long time, always charge it sufficiently with the AC adapter before using it. - For safety reasons, always use the dedicated AC adapter (sold separately). The AC adapter is for both 110V and 220V. 7. Charging iAUDIO using a PC To charge the battery of iAUDIO F1 using a PC, 1. Connect the supplied USB cable to the Line-in terminal and a PC. 2. While iAUDIO F1 is connected to a PC, run Windows Explorer or JetShell. 2. Copy the music files and other files to use with iAUDIO F1 in the iAUDIO drive. 3. When file copying is completed, click the @@ icon on the system tray. 4. When the following message pops up, click on it. 5. When the safe hardware removal message appears as shown below, disconnect the USB cable. - For instructions on JetShell, see the JetShell manual in the enclosed CD. - For Windows 98 and 98 SE operating systems, the safe hardware removal message may not appear. In this case, disconnect the cable after confirming that the file transfer window is closed. - When the following message appears, it does not mean there is any problem in the product. Just perform safe hardware removal after a short while. iAUDIO F1 Basic Instructions 1. Simple Usage 17 1. Connect some earphones to iAUDIO. 2. Press and hold the "PLAY" button until iAUDIO powers on. 3. The initial screen and preset logo appear, and then the display changes to a standby screen. (You can set iAUDIO to automatically play music upon power on.) 4. Press the "PLAY" button again to start playback. 5. Move the lever to the left or right to play other tracks. Move it up or down to adjust volume. 6. Press and hold the "PLAY" button again to power off iAUDIO. 2. Basic Instructions for Mode Change Example: Changing from MP3 Player Mode to FM Radio Mode There are four modes: MP3 Player, FM Radio, Voice Recorder, and Line-in Recorder. In order to change from one mode to another, press the "MENU" button and then select the Mode menu. When the mode change screen appears, push the lever in the + or - direction to change to a desired mode. After changing to a desired mode, press the lever. The mode screen appears, and mode changing is completed. To cancel mode changing and return to the original mode, press the REC button. iAUDIO F1 18 Basic Instructions 3. Basic Instructions for Menu Operation Example: Using EQ in JetEffect Navigating Between Menus · Press the "MENU" button to open the Menu, and push the lever in the + or - direction to move to another menu. · To open a submenu, press the lever or push it in the direction. · To move to an upper menu, push the lever in the direction. (If the current menu is the highest menu, the display will return to a standby screen.) Changing Values of Menu Items · · · · When the current menu is the lowest menu, open the setting screen of the menu. Push the lever in the + or - direction to change the value to a desired value. To select an item, press the lever. The selected value is applied immediately. When setting is completed, press the "PLAY" button to return to the Mode screen Canceling Menu Setting and Closing Menu Screen · When you press the REC button, the value of the current menu item is returned to the previous value, and the Menu screen is closed. Equalizer Menu Settings · Open the Equalizer menu. · Push the lever in the + or - direction to select the currently set EQ band. · Push the lever in the direction to select an EQ band. · Push the lever in the + or - direction in the selected band to adjust the dB level of the band. (-28 ~ +28dB) · To finish EQ setting and return to the upper menu, press the lever in the direction, or press the "PLAY" button. iAUDIO F1 Basic Instructions 4. Basic Instructions for Navigator 19 Opening Navigator Press and hold the lever to open Navigator. Moving Up/Down in Navigator Press the lever in the + or direction. Selecting Navigator Item To select and open a folder, press the lever or the Popup button to display the Popup window and then select Expand. Or, you can bypass the Popup and enter a folder directly by pushing the lever in the direction. Playing Selected Files Press the Play button or push and hold the lever in the direction, then iAUDIO will return to the MP3 Player mode and the selected file will be played. When you press the lever in the direction briefly, the selected file will be played in Navigator mode. When you press the lever, the Popup window will appear. Select Play now to play the selected file in Navigator mode. Opening Navigator Screen · To open the Navigator screen, press the lever. · In MP3 Player, Voice Recorder, or Line-in Recorder modes, the Navigator for exploring the folders and files on disk opens. · In FM Tuner mode, the Navigator for exploring and setting preset frequencies opens. Moving Between Navigator Items · To move up or down in Navigator, push the lever in the + or - direction. · To move to a sub folder, press the lever or push it in the direction. · To move to an upper folder, push the lever in the direction. (When the current folder is the highest folder, Navigator will be closed and iAUDIO will return to the previous mode. Selecting Navigator Item · When you press the lever or move it in the direction while a file is selected, the file will be played. · When you press the lever or move it in the direction while a folder is selected, the folder will be opened. Entering Navigation Mode · To enter Navigation Mode, press the MENU button or press and hold the lever in Navigator. iAUDIO F1 20 Basic Instructions Navigator Popup Window · When you press the "POPUP" button, an appropriate Popup window appears depending on the folder, file, Dynamic PlayList file, Bookmark file, or Radio mode. · Push the lever in the + or - direction to move to a desired item in the popup window. · Press the lever or push it in the direction to select the item in the popup window. · To cancel and close the Popup window, press the "REC" button. Entering Navigation Mode Press the MENU button in Navigator to enter Navigation Mode. Music Files : You can explore general music files such as MP3s and WMAs according to the folder structure. Dynamic PlayList : The playlist is displayed, which was added with `Add to list.' You can also delete list items. Bookmarks : You can bookmark the current track, or listen to bookmarked tracks. iAUDIO F1 Instructions for Each Mode 1. MP3 Player Mode 1. Power On/Play · When you press the PLAY button, iAUDIO powers on with the iAUDIO logo. · Upon power on, iAUDIO begins playing music. · When Resume is set, the last played track and played position are recalled and playback begins from that point. · To listen to music by moving to MP3 Player mode from another mode after iAUDIO powers on, press the MODE button and select MP3 Player from the menu. Adjust focus with the + and - buttons and select with the MENU button. Then iAUDIO enters MP3 Player mode. 2. Power Off/Stop · To power off iAUDIO when iAUDIO is stopped, press and hold the "PLAY" button. · When you press the "PLAY" button briefly, iAUDIO stops playing. · iAUDIO automatically powers off when you set Auto off or the Sleep function. · You cannot power off iAUDIO when it is connected to a PC via the USB cable. 3. Adjusting Volume · To adjust volume while iAUDIO is playing a file, press the + or - button. · Press briefly to change by one unit, and press and hold to change more rapidly. · Volume can be adjusted from 00 (mute) to 40. 21 4. Setting Section Repeat When iAUDIO is playing a track in MP3 Player mode, press the REC (AB) button. When you press the button at the beginning point of the section repeat, the (A) icon appears at the bottom of LCD. And when you press the button again at the end point of the section repeat, the icon changes to (AB). The section specified in this way is repeatedly played. To cancel the section repeat, press the REC button again. iAUDIO F1 22 Instructions for Each Mode 5. Hold When you turn on the HOLD button, iAUDIO will not respond even if you press other buttons. 2. FM Radio Mode (Listening to FM Radio) When you press the FF / REW buttons briefly while FM radio is playing, the frequency moves by 0.1 MHz. When you press the FF / REW buttons for one or two seconds and release it, the nearest frequency with good reception is automatically searched for. If you wish to record a radio broadcast while listening to it, press the REC button. The files recorded by preset recording quality are saved as F***. MP3 files in FM under the Records folder. (*** is a three-digit sequential number) When you press the PLAY button briefly while recording, the recording is paused. When you press the PLAY button briefly while playing, iAUDIO changes to Preset mode in which you can select a preset channel. Press and hold the MENU button to enter FM Presets while listening to the radio, where 24 presets are provided and you can change the Preset channel by pressing the FF / REW buttons. You can use more convenient features that appear in a Popup window by selecting a channel and pressing the MENU button. · Listen Ch: Listen to the current frequency. · Save Current: Add the current frequency to Presets. · Delete Ch: Delete the current preset. Voice Recorder Mode (Voice Recording with Embedded Mic) The Voice Recorder mode allows you to record voice using the built-in microphone. 23 1. Power on iAUDIO and move to Voice Recorder mode. 2. To play a recorded file, press the "PLAY" button. iAUDIO F1 24 Instructions for Each Mode 4. Line-in Recorder Mode (Recording through Stereo Cable) In Line-in Recorder mode, you can record the sound from another audio device to iAUDIO via the supplied stereo cable. 1. Connect the headphone jack of CD player and the Line-in jack of iAUDIO using a stereo cable. 2. Power on iAUDIO and move to Line-in Recorder mode. 3. When you press the REC button, iAUDIO waits until an audio signal is detected. iAUDIO follows the settings of Auto Sync. See 4. Detailed Descriptions of Menus 8. Recording. 4. When you press the PLAY button in the CD player, iAUDIO begins recording. 5. Press the REC button again to stop recording. 6. However, recorded files in the RECORDS folder are excluded. Only the F and 1 modes can be selected for RECORDS. · P (PlayList) : Only the selected tracks in PlayList are played. 2. Repeat : Repeat allows you to set the repeat play value to apply to the track you wish to repeat. In MP3 Player mode, press the MENU button and enter PLAY Mode. Select Repeat and press the MENU button. The small rectangular box at right is checked. Press the MENU button again to uncheck the box and cancel repeat play. When this is checked, the track will be repeatedly played. 3. Shuffle : Shuffle allows you to set random playback of tracks within the selected range in Play mode. Be sure to set this to 0 (Off) before beginning an important recording. · Select Voice Active and press the MENU button. Line Volume · Adjusts the volume level of the incoming sound from the Line-in jack. · You can select a value between 1 and 10. Auto Sync · This feature detects the sound coming in through the Line-in jack and converts each track into a separate file by automatically recognizing the silence between tracks. · You can select a value between 0 and 8.
