Wrong polarity may damage the unit. We recommend Alkaline batteries for longer life. NOTE: Weak or dead batteries may swell and leak. To avoid damage to the unit, remove batteries when the unit is not to be used for a long period of time ( 2 months or more), or when the batteries become exhausted. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not mix alkaline, standard ( carbon-zinc ) or rechargeable (nickel-cadmium ) batteries. 1 1135110298 E EXTERNAL AC ADAPTOR ( NOT INCLUDED ) This unit can be powered by an AC outlet. Be careful to use an AC adapter which is correctly matched to your unit. Your cassette radio requires a DC input of 3V (300 mA or more ) with a XXXXX polarity. This AC Adapter can be purchased separately in many radio stores. RADIO OPERATION NORMAL TUNING 1. Insert the headphone plug into the Headphone jack. Unbunch the headphone wire because this is also your FM Antenna. 2. Slide the Function switch (1) to the RADIO position. 3. Select the FM or AM band by pressing the AM/FM band button (8). Lock switch (9) must be in OFF position. 4. Tune a station by pressing the Tuning UP or DOWN button (UP or DN). 5. If the FM Stereo switch is in ON position, pressing either tuning button for more than 0.5 seconds activates the automatic tuning mode. The automatic tuner will scan up or down and lock onto the next station. If the automatic tuning does not precisely tune a radio station, press the Tuning UP or DOWN button to adjust the tuning. 6. Adjust the Volume Control (2). 7. To turn off the radio, set the Function switch (1) to TAPE position. MEMORY TUNING UP TO 5 AM STATIONS AND 5 FM STATIONS CAN BE STORED IN MEMORY 1. Tune to a desired station as described in Normal Tuning (either AM or FM ). 2. Press the Memory Store button (10), the Memory Number indicator (23) blinks. 3. While the Memory Number indicator is blinking, press one of the Preset Memory (M1 to M5) to store a station in it. NOTE: Preset Memory buttons M1 to M5 can store AM stations and FM stations in the same button. 2 1135110298 E TO RECEIVE PRESET MEMORY STATIONS (AFTER YOU PROGRAMMED THEM) 1. Slide Tune Lock switch (9) to OFF position. 2. Set the Function switch (1) to the RADIO position. 3. Set AM/FM switch to the band you want. 4. Press one of the Preset Memory buttons (M1 to M5) to select stations stored and slide the Tune Lock button (9) to ON position. The display will show the word LOCK, and you will receive the station you stored into that memory button. NOTE: When you are in the fringe area of a particular FM station, the stereo program from that station may be noisy. To reduce the noise interference, stretch the headphone cord or switch the FM Stereo switch to OFF position. When tuning a AM station, rotate the set slowly for best reception. MEMORY BACKUP OF STORED STATIONS Once the batteries are weak, switch the Function switch to TAPE position and press the Stop button to turn off power. Then you have 30 seconds to change the new batteries. NOTE: When you replace batteries or switch from batteries to AC adapter, make sure to turn the power off (Function Switch on TAPE position). Otherwise the set may lose the preset memory. CAUTION: If the batteries have been removed for more than 30 seconds, you may need to re-program all the radio stations. RESET: (If some erratic information appears on the LCD display) Take out the batteries and switch to radio function for quick discharge and replace the batteries after 1 minute. You will have to re-program the memory. 3 1135110298 E TO PLAY A PRE-RECORDED CASSETTE TAPE 1. Open the cassette door. 2. Insert a pre-recorded tape into the slots on the door with the open surface facing up. Full spool of tape on the right side. 3. Close the cassette door. 4. Set the Function switch to TAPE position. 5. Press the Play button. 6. Plug in the headphones provided. 7. Turn the Volume Control to the desired level. 8. Set Bass Boost switch to ON if an emphasized bass level is desired. 9. The tape will play till the end and the set will shut itself off. To listen to the other side, remove the tape, flip it over to the other side, re-insert and press Play. 10. Press the Stop button to stop playing the tape. 4 1135110298 E FAST FORWARD Press Fast Forward button (15) to advance the tape. Release the button by pressing Stop. POWER To turn radio on, slide Radio/Tape switch (1) to RADIO. To shut the radio off, slide switch TAPE. To turn tape on, slide switch to TAPE (radio off) position and press Play. When the tape reaches the end and Play button pops up, the power is off. LOCK SWITCH Sliding the Tune Lock switch ON (up) disables the Front panel (door) buttons. This prevents accidentally tuning to a different station. BASS BOOST SWITCH Sliding this switch to ON gives you more bass ( low frequency ) sounds in radio or tape. FM STEREO SWITCH Sliding the switch to FM STEREO ON (stereo) will give you stereo sound and stereo indicator will show in the display window. However, some FM Stereo stations are noisy, so you may want to switch to OFF (mono) for clearer sound in some locations. NOTE: To avoid damaging the tape head, do not open the cassette door in the play mode. Press Stop first. ANTENNA The AM Band has a built-in ferrite rod antenna. The FM Antenna is built-in to headphone wire so be sure to extend the headphone wire for best reception. You may find you can improve AM reception by rotating the set or bringing it closer to a window. 5 1135110298 E CASSETTE TAPE OPERATION TIPS 1. To obtain good operation, the head should be cleaned after every 30 hours of use. It is also recommended that the tape be kept away from excessive heat or cold. 2. If there is slack in the tape, remove it before inserting the tape. To do so, insert a pencil into the hub and rotate clockwise as shown. 3. Keep the tape head clean since a dirty tape head can cause distorted sound or improper tape speed. Press the play button and use a small cotton swab with tape head cleaner or alcohol to clean the tape head, capstan and pinch roller as shown on page 7. NOTE: If the Play button pops up and you cannot get tape to play, flip the tape around to the other side and insert into door again (the tape may be at the end). Remember the full spool of the tape must be inserted as shown on page 4 on the right side. 6 1135110298 E CARE AND MAINTENANCE 1. Clean you unit with a slightly dampened cloth. Solvents or detergents should never be used. 2. Avoid leaving you unit in direct sunlight, in hot, humid, or dusty place. 3. Keep your unit away from heating appliances and sources of electrical noise such as fluorescent lamps or motors. Read this important information before using your headset. Avoid extended play at very high volume as it may harm your ears. Keep volume at a reasonable level. If you experience ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or shut off your unit. Do not use headphones while driving a motorized vehicle. It is dangerous and illegal in some states. 7 1135110298 E IN CASE OF DIFFICULTY If your unit is not operating properly, check the following points listed below: 1. Tape fails to move. Set the Function switch (1) to TAPE and try another tape, also check if batteries are weak. 2. Tape sound fades or is unsteady. Clean the tape head, pinch roller and capstan or replace batteries or try another tape. 3. Poor radio reception. Straighten the headphone cord. Or bring the set close to a window ( some steel walls block radio waves ).
