BREAKING-IN YOUR VEHICLE There are no particular guidelines for breaking-in your vehicle. During the first 1 600 km (1 000 miles) of driving, vary speeds frequently. This SOON system is commonly known as the On Board Diagnostics System (OBD II). The OBD II system protects the environment by ensuring that your vehicle continues to meet government emission standards. The OBD II system also assists the service technician in properly servicing your vehicle. The Service Engine Soon indicator light illuminates when the ignition is first turned to the ON position to check the bulb. If it comes on after the engine is started, one of the engine's emission control systems may be malfunctioning. The light may illuminate without a driveability concern being noted. The vehicle will usually be drivable and will not require towing. What you should do if the Service Engine Soon light illuminates Light turns on solid: This means that the OBD II system has detected a malfunction. Temporary malfunctions may cause your Service Engine Soon light to illuminate. Examples are: 1. The vehicle has run out of fuel. (The engine may misfire or run poorly.) 2. Poor fuel quality or water in the fuel. 8 Instrumentation 3. The fuel cap may not have been properly installed and securely tightened. These temporary malfunctions can be corrected by filling the fuel tank with high quality fuel of the recommended octane and/or properly installing and securely tightening the gas cap. After three driving cycles without these or any other temporary malfunctions present, the Service Engine Soon light should turn off. (A driving cycle consists of a cold engine startup followed by mixed city/highway driving.) No additional vehicle service is required. If the Service Engine Soon light remains on, have your vehicle serviced at the first available opportunity. Light is blinking: Engine misfire is occurring which could damage your catalytic converter. You should drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration) and have your vehicle serviced at the first available opportunity. Under engine misfire conditions, excessive exhaust temperatures could damage the catalytic converter, the fuel system, interior floor coverings or other vehicle components, possibly causing a fire. Air bag readiness Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned ON. If the light fails to illuminate, continues to flash or remains on, have the system serviced immediately. Safety belt Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position to remind you to fasten your safety belts. For more information, refer to the Seating and safety restraints chapter. AIR BAG 9 Instrumentation Check fuel cap Momentarily illuminates when the CHECK ignition is turned to the ON position FUEL to ensure your bulb is working. CAP When this light turns on, check the fuel filler cap. Continuing to operate the vehicle with the check fuel cap light on, can activate the Service Engine Soon/Check Engine warning light. When the fuel filler cap is properly re-installed, the light(s) will turn off after a period of normal driving. This period will vary depending on driving conditions. It may take a long period of time for the system to detect an improperly installed fuel filler cap. For more information, refer to Fuel filler cap in the Maintenance and care chapter. Brake system warning Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned to the START BRAKE position to ensure the circuit is ! functional. Also illuminates if the parking brake is engaged. If the brake warning lamp does not illuminate at these times, seek service immediately. Illumination after releasing the parking brake indicates low brake fluid level and the brake system should be inspected immediately. Anti-lock brake system (ABS) Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position ABS to indicate a system check. If the light remains on, continues to flash or fails to illuminate, have the system serviced immediately. With the ABS light on, the anti-lock brake system is disabled and normal braking is still effective unless the brake warning light also remains illuminated with the parking brake released. 10 Instrumentation Turn signal Illuminates when the left or right turn signal or the hazard lights are turned on. If one or both of the indicators stay on continuously or flash faster, check for a burned-out turn signal bulb. Refer to Bulbs in the Maintenance and care chapter. High beams Illuminates when the high beam headlamps are turned on. Charging system Illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position and the engine is off. The light also illuminates when the battery is not charging properly, requiring electrical system service. Engine oil pressure Momentarily illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position and the engine is off. Illuminates when the oil pressure falls below the normal range. Stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible and switch off the engine immediately. Check the oil level and add oil if needed. Refer to Engine oil in the Maintenance and care chapter. 11 Instrumentation Engine coolant temperature Illuminates when the engine coolant temperature is high. Stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible, switch off the engine and let it cool. Never remove the coolant recovery cap while the engine is running or hot. Refer to Engine coolant in the Maintenance and care chapter. If light stays on or continues to turn on after the vehicle warms up, have your vehicle serviced. This light also illuminates briefly when the ignition key is turned to ON. Trunk ajar If the trunk is not completely closed, this light comes on when you turn the ignition to ON. With the ignition ON, this light will flash five times and sound a tone for one second, then remain on. TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION km O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE SPEED CONTROL CIRCLE SLOWLY COMPASS Door ajar Illuminates when one of the doors is not completely shut and the ignition is turned to ON. With the ignition ON, this light will remain on until all doors are closed. TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION km O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE SPEED CONTROL CIRCLE SLOWLY COMPASS 12 Instrumentation Trac off Illuminates when the Traction Control system has been disabled (by the driver or as a result of a system failure). For more information, refer to the Driving chapter. TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION km O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE SPEED CONTROL CIRCLE SLOWLY COMPASS Air suspension Briefly illuminates when the ignition is turned ON. This light will remain on to indicate that the air suspension switch is OFF, the load limit is exceeded or to indicate a possible system fault. For more information on the air suspension system, refer to the Driving chapter. TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION km O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE SPEED CONTROL CIRCLE SLOWLY COMPASS O/D off Illuminates when the Transmission TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR Control Switch (TCS), refer to CIRCLE Overdrive control in the Controls TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION SLOWLY and Features chapter, has been km pushed turning the transmission overdrive function OFF. When the O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE light is on, the transmission does SPEED CONTROL COMPASS not operate in the overdrive mode, refer to the Driving chapter for transmission function and operation. The light may also flash steadily if a transmission malfunction is detected. If the light does not come on when the Transmission Control Switch is depressed or if the light flashes steadily, have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, damage to the transmission could occur. 13 Instrumentation Trac active Illuminates when the Traction Control system begins applying and releasing the brakes and adjusting the engine characteristics to limit a wheelspin condition. For more information on the traction control system, refer to the Driving chapter. Speed control This light comes on when either the SET/ACCEL or RESUME controls are pressed. It turns off when the speed control OFF control is pressed, the brake is applied or the ignition is turned to the OFF position. WASHER LTR/100km FUEL ECON DIST TO EMPTY AVG SPEED TRIP A B E/M km MILES/GAL Safety belt warning chime Sounds to remind you to fasten your safety belts. For information on the safety belt warning chime, refer to the Seating and safety restraints chapter. Belt minder chime Sounds intermittently to remind you to fasten your safety belts. For information on the safety belt minder chime, refer to the Seating and safety restraints chapter. 14 Instrumentation Supplemental restraint system (SRS) warning chime For information on the SRS warning chime, refer to the Seating and safety restraints chapter. Key-in-ignition warning chime Sounds when the key is left in the ignition in the OFF/LOCK or ACC position and the driver's door is opened. Headlamps on warning chime Sounds when the headlamps or parking lamps are on, the ignition is off (and the key is not in the ignition) and the driver's door is opened. Turn signal chime (if equipped) Sounds when the turn signal lever has been activated to signal a turn and not turned off after the vehicle is driven more than 0.8 km (1/2 mile). TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION km O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE SPEED CONTROL CIRCLE SLOWLY COMPASS Fuel gauge Displays approximately how much < FILL ON LEFT fuel is in the fuel tank (when the key is in the ON position). The fuel F 1 2 gauge may vary slightly when the vehicle is in motion or after refueling. The ignition should be in E the OFF position while the vehicle is being refueled. When the gauge first indicates empty, there is a small amount of reserve fuel in the tank. When refueling the vehicle from an empty indication, the amount of fuel that can be added will be less than the advertised capacity due to the reserve fuel. Speedometer Indicates the current vehicle speed. 50 40 30 60 80 100 120 140 160 20 180 60 70 80 90 100 110 120 20 10 40 MPH km/h 16 Instrumentation Engine coolant temperature gauge Indicates the temperature of the engine coolant. At normal operating H temperature, the needle remains within the normal area (the area between the "H" and "C"). If it enters the red section, the engine is overheating. Stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible, switch off the engine immediately and let the engine cool. Refer to Engine coolant in the Maintenance and care chapter. Never remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or hot. This gauge indicates the temperature of the engine coolant, not the coolant level. If the coolant is not at its proper level the gauge indication will not be accurate. If the gauge enters the red section, the oil pressure/engine coolant and Check Engine/Service Engine Soon indicators illuminate, refer to What you should know about fail-safe cooling in the Maintenance and carechapter. ELECTRONIC MESSAGE CENTER The electronic message center only works when the ignition is in the ON position. The message center allows you to: · see problems such as door ajar TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR and trunk ajar. CIRCLE TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION SLOWLY · see the compass direction. · check the on/off status of air suspension and speed control systems. km O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE SPEED CONTROL COMPASS 17 Instrumentation · see how many kilometers/miles WASHER FUEL ECON you can drive before running out LTR/100km DIST TO EMPTY of fuel. AVG SPEED · see how many liters/gallons of TRIP A B fuel remain in the fuel tank. E/M · monitor the average fuel km MILES/GAL economy. · monitor the average speed. · check the distance traveled during a trip on either Trip A or Trip B. You can select different features for the message center to display by using the message center controls located in the center of the instrument panel. Reset Press this control to reset the selected message center function to zero. (The only functions which can be reset are FUEL ECON and TRIP A or B.) SELECT RESET 18 Instrumentation Compass display (if equipped) The compass reading may be TRUNK AJAR DOOR AJAR affected when you drive near large CIRCLE buildings, bridges, power lines and TRAC OFF AIR SUSPENSION SLOWLY powerful broadcast antenna. km Magnetic or metallic objects placed in, on or near the vehicle may also O/D OFF TRAC ACTIVE affect compass accuracy. SPEED CONTROL COMPASS Usually, when something affects the compass readings, the compass will correct itself after a few days of operating your vehicle in normal conditions. If the compass still appears to be inaccurate, a manual calibration may be necessary. Refer to Compass calibration adjustment. Most geographic areas (zones) have a magnetic north compass point that varies slightly from the northerly direction on maps. This variation is four degrees between adjacent zones and will become noticeable as the vehicle crosses multiple zones. A correct zone setting will eliminate this error. Refer to Compass zone adjustment. 19 Instrumentation Compass zone adjustment 1. Determine which magnetic zone you are in for your geographic location by referring to the zone map. 1 15 2. Locate the compass module and 2 14 the calibration button mounted on 3 the center rear view mirror post. 13 4 12 3. Turn ignition to the ON position. 11 4. Press and hold the CALIBRATION 5 6 10 BUTTON switch located on top of the compass module until the 7 89 message center display changes to show the current zone setting. 5. Release the CALIBRATION BUTTON, then slowly press down again. Press the CALIBRATION BUTTON repeatedly until the correct zone setting for your geographic location is displayed on the message center. 6. To exit the zone setting mode, release pressure from the switch for greater than ten seconds. Compass calibration adjustment Perform this adjustment in an open area free from steel structures and high voltage lines. For optimum calibration, turn off all electrical accessories (heater/air conditioning, wipers, etc.) and make sure all vehicle doors are shut. 1. Start the vehicle. 2. Locate the compass module and the CALIBRATION BUTTON mounted on the center rear view mirror post. 20
