There are, however, some installation and operation precautions which you should be particularly aware of. 1. Accessories ­ Do not place this video product on an unstable cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the video product. Any mounting of the appliance should follow the manufacturer's instructions, and should use a mounting accessory recommended by the manufacturer. 9. Ventilation ­ Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the video product and to protect it from overheating, and these openings must not be blocked or covered. Grounding or Polarization ­ This video product is equipped with a polarized alternating-current line plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit into the power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized plug. AC POLARIZED PLUG 12. Power-Cord Protection ­ Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the appliance. 13. Protective Attachment Plug ­ The appliance is equipped with an attachment plug having overload protection. This is a safety feature. See Instruction Manual for replacement or resetting of protective device. If replacement of the plug is required, be sure the service technician has used a replacement plug specified by the manufacturer that has the same overload protection as the original plug. 14. Outdoor Antenna Grounding ­ If an outside antenna or cable system is connected to the video product, be sure the antenna or cable system is grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage surges and built up static charges. Section 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1984, provides information with respect to proper grounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antennadischarge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode. Lightning ­ For added protection for this video product receiver during a lightning storm, or when it is left un-attended and unused for long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to the video product due to lightning and power-line surges. 16. Power Lines ­ An outside antenna system should not be located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other electric light or power circuits, or where it can fall into such power lines or circuits. When installing an outside antenna system, extreme care should be taken to keep from touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them might be fatal. 17. Overloading ­ Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can result in a risk of fire or electric shock. 18. Object and Liquid Entry ­ Never push objects of any kind into this video product through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on th video product. 19. Servicing ­ Do not attempt to service this video product yourself as opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. 20. Damage Requiring Service ­ Unplug this video product from the wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions: a. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged. b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the video product. c. If the video product has been exposed to rain or water. d. If the video product does not operate normally by following the operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions as an improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the video product to its normal operation. e. If the video product has been dropped or the cabinet has been damaged. f. When the video product exhibits a distinct change in performance ­ this indicates a need for service. 21. Replacement Parts ­ When replacement parts are required, be sure the service technician has used replacement parts specified by the manufacturer or have the same characteristics as the original part. This Stereo Cassette Deck incorporates a number of features designed to enhance the listening of your favorite audio sources. Please read these operating instructions carefully. We recommend that you read the entire user guide before you attempt to connect or operate the unit. After you have reviewed the contents of this manual, we suggest that you make all system connections before you attempt to operate the unit. Refer to the Figures on pages 3 and 23 at the rear of this user guide. The callout numbers on the Figures correspond to those found in the text. All references to the connections and controls that are printed in BOLD type are as they appear on the unit. FEATURES ¼ Top-end models of the Slim Line Series This model has a very slim shape and a height of 68 mm. All buttons except for the control knobs are concealed behind a front flap. PRECAUTIONS The following precautions should be taken when operating the equipment. ¼ 2-Program Timer/Sleep Timer ¼ System remote control The remote control supplied with this unit can also be used to operate the MD Deck and tape deck of the Marantz Slim Line Series. In this manual, the controls on the main unit are enclosed in a circle, e.g. q, and the controls on the remote control are enclosed in a square, e.g.z. GENERAL PRECAUTIONS When setting the equipment ensure that: -- the ventilation holes are not covered -- air is allowed to circulate freely around the equipment -- it is on a vibration free-surface -- it will not be exposed to interference from an external source -- it will not be exposed to excessive heat, cold, moisture or dust -- it will not be exposed to direct sunlight -- it will not be exposed to electrostatic discharges Never place heavy objects on the equipment. If a foreign body or water does enter the equipment, contact your nearest dealer or service centre. Do not pull out the plug by pulling on the mains lead, hold the plug. It is advisable when leaving the house, or during a thunderstorm, to disconnect the equipment from the mains supply. 4 CONNECTIONS This unit is equipped with the remote control bus function. By connecting it to Marantz system components equipped with remote control (D.BUS/RC-5) jacks, such as a MD Deck and tape deck, these components can be remote controlled from this unit. Connect the D.BUS OUT jack of this unit to the REMOTE CONT.BUS IN jack of another component using an RCA-type pin lead. NOTE: ¼ If the connected component with the remote control (D.BUS/RC-5) jacks has an INT/EXT switch on the rear panel, set the switch to EXT. CR2020 rear panel D. In areas where the AM loop antenna gives unsatisfactory results, it is recommended that the receiver be connected to an outdoor antenna. Use the terminal marked "AM" for this. An earthing lead can be connected to the terminal marked "GND" to reduce interference further. !3 !4 (OPEN/CLOSE) button Display : : : : : : : : Lights up when a track is repeated. STEREO indicator FM AUTO indicator Memory indicator Preset and Track indicator Shows the CD track number. : Clock indicator : Function/Station name/Frequency indicator : The elapsed playing time of the track being played; The total playing time of the CD or a program (TOTAL); The remaining playing time of the track being played; The remaining playing time of the CD or a program; Opening and closing the CD compartment. DIGITAL OUTPUT OPTICAL This output supplies a digital signal via an optical path (optical-fibre cable and photocoupler) and can therefore be connected to a Digital Analog Converter (DAC), a Compact Disc Recorder (CDR), a Digital Compact Cassette deck (DCC), an amplifier with an optical digital input or a digital sound processor. The output is covered with a protective cap which should only be removed when the output is in use. i o Mains lead Touch sensor Connect to a mains power outlet. When this elongated button is touched lightly, the front flap opens or closes automatically. ¼ The door cannot be closed while headphones are in use. !0 POWER switch Press to turn power ON and press again to turn it OFF. The clock is displayed while the POWER switch is OFF. When the switch is in the OFF position, the apparatus is NOT disconnected from the AC supply mains. !5 F.SEL (Function Selector) button AUX TAPE MD The source changes as follows each time this button is pressed: !1 !2 EDIT button !6 !7 FM/AM button DISPLAY button Selecting EDIT mode to enter the recording time when making a tape recording. Press to alternate between FM and AM. Main operation buttons / (PLAY/PAUSE) -- Starting play. -- Interrupting play. (STOP) -- Stopping play. -- Erasing a program. Press to change the displayed content. The display usually shows the station name, but shows the frequency when this button is pressed. The frequency is also displayed during reception of a station which does not broadcast its station name. If this button is pressed during this, "NO NAME" is displayed for about 1 second. Used to switch the time information display during CD playback. !8 F/P (Frequency / Preset) button Press to change the function of the UP/DOWN buttons between the frequency change and preset number change. 6 !9 TIMER button @0 @1 BASS button POWER Press this button to boost the low frequencies. Press the button again to return to normal. UP and DOWN buttons FM/AM CD SLEEP EDIT z /2 /3 Press these buttons to change the tuner frequency or preset channels. These buttons are also used to enter alphanumeric characters during timer setting or station name preset operation. x TAPE MD AUX TIME @2 CLOCK button CANCEL /4 1 2 5 8 0 3 PROG/ MEMO Press to enter the clock display mode. If this button is pressed while the POWER switch is ON, the display changes to the clock display and then returns to the previous display in 5 seconds. Invalid during CD playback. /5 /6 /7 RANDOM /MONO REPEAT/ P­SCAN @3 @4 @5 @6 c 4 7 6 9 MEMO button This button is used to store frequency preset, timer setting data, preset station name and clock data in the memory. PHONES jack v n /8 For connecting a pair of stereo headphones. Plugging in the headphones turns the speaker sound off. VOLume control Infrared sensor VOLUME This knob adjusts the volume. The infrared signal from the remote control enters the unit through this window. When remote controlling the unit, point the remote control transmitter toward this window. b PTY (K version only) DISPLAY @7 VOLTAGE SELECTOR switches Set both switches to the same positions according to your local voltage. Be sure to unplug the power cord from the power outlet before changing the position of these switches. , /0 /1 DOOR BASS TRAY . CLOCK MUTE m RC2020CR REMOTE CONTROL UNIT z x c POWER switch Press this switch to turn the power of the unit ON. Pressing the switch again turns the power OFF and the unit enters the standby mode. Function buttons CD, FM/AM, TAPE, MD, AUX. These buttons select the source to be played or recorded. Numeric buttons 1 to 9 These buttons are used to enter figures in the selection of a tuner preset station, to set the clock or to set select a CD track number, etc. The functions of these buttons are dependent on the function button selected. 7 FRANÇAIS ENGLISH This button is used when setting a timer program or checking the timer program contents after setting the timer. It is also used to cancel a set value. CONTROL BUTTONS ON THE REMOTE CONTROL v ENGLISH FRANÇAIS 0 button /7 REPEAT/P-SCAN button This button is used to enter the number "0" as well as to cancel various operations. When CD is selected: Repeat (used to repeat the same tracks). When TUNER is selected: Press to initiate the tuner preset scanning. Preset scanning receives the stations preset in the memory in sequence for 5 seconds per station. When the desired station is received, press the DOWN button; preset scanning is cancelled and the station can be received in normal reception. Pressing the UP button during preset scanning allows to skip the received station. b Control buttons Play ( ), Stop ( ), Pause ( ), FF ( ), REW ( ). These buttons are used when operating the CD player, TAPE deck, MD player, etc. The functions of these buttons are dependent on the function button selected. When TUNER is selected: Pause ( ) Display button FF ( ) Tuning UP REW ( ) Tuning DOWN NEXT ( ) PRESET UP PREVIOUS ( ) PRESET DOWN /8 RANDOM/MONO button When CD is selected: Playing in random order. When TUNER is selected: Stereo/Mono (used to switch the tuner reception mode between stereo and mono). When TAPE is selected: Direction (used to select side A or B). n m VOLUME e/ buttons button to increase These buttons vary the listening volume. Press the it and the button to decrease it. MUTE button Press to mute the sound from the speakers. When this button is pressed, the speakers are muted and "MUTE" appears on the display of the main unit. Pressing the button again cancels the muting function, which can also be cancelled by pressing one of the function buttons. CAUTION Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. , DOOR button If components of the Marantz Slim Line Series are connected through the AL-Bus, the DOOR button allows the doors on the system components to be opened or closed. NOTE: If the AL-BUS is not connected, OPEN/CLOSE operates the dooron this unit only. 1. Remote control operation range The remote control should be operated at a distance of less than 5 m from the infrared sensor of the unit. Be careful not to point the transmitter of the remote control in any direction other than towards the infrared sensor and ensure that there are no obstacles between the transmitter and infrared sensor, for these may make remote control operation impossible. . /0 /1 TRAY button BASS button Opening and closing the CD compartment. Press this button to boost the low frequencies. Press the button again to return to normal. CLOCK button If this button is pressed while the POWER switch is ON, the display changes to the clock display and then returns to the previous display in 5 seconds. Invalid during CD playback. /2 /3 /4 /5 Approx. 5m SLEEP button EDIT button 60° Press to set the sleep timer. Selecting EDIT mode to enter the recording time when making a tape recording. TIME button CANCEL button Selecting the time information you want to see. -- Erasing track numbers you do not wish to include in a program (TAKE-OUT programming). -- Erasing track numbers from a program. /6 PROG/MEMO button This button is used to store a preset station in the memory or to program a CD track. 8 2. Loading batteries Batteries in this remote control unit have a life of approximately 1 year under normal operating conditions. If the remote control unit is not going to be used for an extended period of time, remove the batteries. Also, if you notice that the batteries are starting to run down, replace them as soon as possible. Functions available with AL-Bus System Connection 1. Synchronized power ON/OFF Switching the POWER switch !0/ z ON/OFF also turns ON/OFF the power of the tape deck connected through the bus system connection. 2. Synchronized door open/close Pressing the DOOR button , of the remote control opens or closes the doors of the components in the system. 3. Auto operation When the tape deck is operated, the system switches over automatically to the component which is playing. 4. Simple connection The system can be connected very easily with a small number of cables. 1) Remove the battery cover. Set the VOLUME control @5/n to the minimum position. 2. Press the POWER switch !0/ z to turn the power ON. 3. Press the optimum function button !5, !6/x for the source to be played by referring to the table below. 4. Start playing the source component. Adjust the listening volume with the VOLUME control @5/n. Source to be played Function button !5, !6/x CD FM/AM AUX MD TAPE 3) Close the battery cover until it clicks shut. CD FM/AM AUX (second tape deck, etc.) MD player Cassette tape deck To record sound onto a tape or MD: Use the following procedure when recording, for example, CD onto a cassette tape or MD. 1. Press the function button x of the source to be recorded. In this example, press the CD function button. The battery life is about 1 year under normal use. The life is variable depending on the operating condition. If the unit is not to be used for a long period of time, be sure to take out the battery from the unit. The RC2020CR Remote control is capable of controlling Marantz system components equipped with the D-Bus or AL-Bus jacks, such as a MD Deck and tape deck as well as this unit. Refer to "Connection of D-BUS Remote Control Bus" on page 5 or to "System Connection through AL-Bus" on page 5 and make the appropriate connections before proceeding to system control operation. An example procedure for system operation is described below. Here, the case in which a TAPE Deck is connected to this unit through the ALBus is taken as an example. 2. Operate the CD player. 3. Operate the tape deck to record the CD onto a cassette tape. The recorded sound will be the same as that reproduced through the speakers. 1. Press the POWER switch z to turn the power of this unit ON. 2. Press the TAPE function button x to set the remote control to TAPE mode. Press the PLAY control button b to play the tape deck. Press the VOLUME e/ buttons n to adjust the listening volume. Press the STOP control button b to stop the tape deck. Set the VOLUME control @5 to the minimum position. 2. Press the POWER switch !0/ z to turn the power ON. 3. Press the FM/AM button !6 or the FM/AM function button x to select the radio band to be received. 4. Press the F/P button !8 to select the frequency display. 5. Press the UP or DOWN button @1/ b to scan the frequency. Pressing the button for less than 0.5 second scans the frequency by 1 step. Holding the button depressed scans the frequency continuously. When the button is released in this mode, auto tuning starts. Auto tuning stops automatically when a broadcasting station is tuned into, and the TUNED indicator lights up. 6. Adjust the volume with the VOLUME control @5/n. The following operation is available only on the remote control. When receiving the FM band, set the desired audio mode with the MONO button /8. When the AUTO indicator is lit up: When a stereo programme is being received, the STEREO indicator lights up and the programme is received in stereo. To receive sound in mono, press the MONO button so that the AUTO indicator goes off. Station name preset The station name preset function allows the name of each preset channel to be entered using alphanumeric characters. The Station Name button is valid only in the tuner mode and the preset number display mode. Before station name preset operation, store stations with the preset memory operation described on the previous page. 1. Press and hold the MEMO button for more than 3 seconds. 2. The leftmost column of the station name indicator flashed, indicating the character entry ready status. [ Operation using the buttons on the main unit ] 3. When the UP button @1 is pressed, alphabetic and numeric characters will be displayed in the following order: A B C...Z 1 UP DOWN 2 3...0 ­ _(Blank) A (K version only) Switching the AM scanning step To switch the AM scanning step to 10 kHz, select AM with the FM/AM button !6 then press and hold the STOP !2 and MEMO @3 buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. "AMSTEP10" appears on the display and the AM scanning step is set to 10 kHz. To return the AM scanning step to 9 kHz, press and hold the STOP !2 and MEMO @3 buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds in the same way as above. "AMSTEP 9" appears on the display and the AM scanning step is returned to 9 kHz. Holding the button depressed displays alphanumeric characters at high speed, and pressing the DOWN button reverses the order. 4. After selecting the first character to be entered, press the MEMO button @3. The entry in this column is fixed and the next column starts to flash. Fill the next column and press the MEMO button @3 for more than 3 second to confirm the entry. NOTE: Unused columns should be filled by entering blanks. PRESET MEMORY OPERATION This unit can store up to 30 stations selected randomly in the FM and AM bands. The preset memory function allows the frequency, receiving mode and also the station name to be stored in the memory. The preset memory can be jilled in two ways: [ Operation using the buttons on the remote control ] 3. Enter the character using the numeric buttons c v. For example, to enter "A": 1) Press the "1" button. "A" appears on the display column. 2) Every time the "1" button is pressed, the displayed character changes in the order: A B C 1 A ... Pressing buttons other than the "1" button cause different characters to be displayed in a similar way, so that other alphanumeric characters can be entered. To enter a blank or space, press the "9" button. 4. When the desired character is displayed, press the PROG/MEMO button /6 to confirm the entry in this column and move to the next column. After having filled all of the 8 columns, press the PROG/MEMO button /6 for more than 3 second again. Manual preset memory 1. Select a desired station, referring to "Tuner Operation". 2. Press the MEMO button @3//6. The MEMO indicator will blink for approx. 5 seconds. In this period, select the preset number with one of the following procedures. * Select the preset number with the UP or DOWN button and press the MEMO button @3//6. Select the preset number by directly entering it with the numeric * buttons. (Remote control only) NOTE: It is recommended that numbers from 1 to 3 be entered as two digits, e.g. 01 to 03. They can also be entered as one digit, but a waiting period of 1.5 seconds is required in this case. Recalling a station from the preset memory (remote control only) 1. Direct selection by pressing numeric buttons c v: Enter an integer from 1 to 30. 1-digit preset numbers 1 to 9 should be preceded by 0, for example "05". The entry is complete when the second digit has been entered. 2. Selection using or buttons b Each press of the or button b increases or decreases the preset number by one, holding the button depressed changes the preset numbers at a high speed and releasing the button stops the high-speed change. Auto preset memory (main unit only) This allows a band to be scanned automatically, a station with good reoperation to be found and to be and stored in the preset memory. 1. Select the desired band and frequency. 2. While holding the MEMO button @3 depressed, press the button @1. The auto preset memory operation starts. Starts auto scanning within the band. UP 10 Preset scan tuning 1. Press the REPEAT/P-SCAN button /7. The PRESET indicator flashes on the display, and the display enters the preset number display mode. (The smallest preset number is recalled at this time. If no station has been preset, "P00" flashes and the display returns to the previous contents.) 2. Preset scan starts endlessly advancing to the next preset number, for example from P1 to P2, every 5 seconds. The preset numbers which do not correspond to any preset memory are skipped. 3. Preset scanning can be accelerated by holding the UP or DOWN @1, or b button depressed. Preset scanning can be cancelled by pressing the P-SCAN /7, button. It can also be cancelled by pressing the 0 button v. 8. Listen to the time announcement
