Important information
Please read these operating instructions carefully and retain! This appliance is designed for domestic use and for processing normal quantities of food and not for industrial use.
Safety instructions

Connect and operate the appliance only in accordance with the specifications on the rating plate. Do not use the appliance if the power cord and/or appliance are damaged. Use the appliance inside and at room temperature only. Keep children away from the appliance. If a fault occurs, immediately pull out the mains plug. Never immerse the appliance in water. To prevent injury, repairs such as replacing a damaged cord, should be carried out by our customer service only. Do not use the drawer for storing heavy parts and do not load. Do not place fingers in the grinding unit.

Grip nozzle 13 by the plastic part only. Never direct nozzle 13 at people! When steam or hot water is released, nozzle 13 may spurt initially.

Carefully push back the drawer into the appliance to prevent fingers or hands from being pinched or crushed.

Before using your appliance for the first time
General
Fill the respective containers with pure water and preferably espresso or coffee beans for fully automatic machines only. Do not use coffee beans which have been glazed, caramelised or treated with other additives containing sugar. These will block the grinding unit. Check the water hardness with the enclosed test strip. If a value other than hardness 3 is indicated, switch on the appliance and program accordingly (see Page 36). The water hardness can also be found out from your local water supply company.
Switching on the appliance
COFFEE
q Press button 11 forwards and pull the drawer out of the appliance. q Connect the coiled cable to the chassis. q Fill the water tank 19 with cold fresh water. Note the max." mark. q Fill the bean container 16 with coffee beans. q Set mains switch 9 to I. q Insert the drawer. q Set function selector 8 to U. q Press button d 1.
i The appliance is ready for use when the illuminated rings on button d 1 and on the 2 on" button 2 are lit
green. Note: If the appliance is being used for the first time or has not been operated for a prolonged period, the first cup of coffee will not have the full aroma and should not be drunk.

For production reasons when switched on for the first time, the water pipe system in the appliance may occasionally have to be refilled: q Press the 2 on" button 2.

To change the display to the desired language: q Hold down button % on the display 4 for at least 3 seconds. q Press button % until the display flashes. q Select the desired language with < or >. q Press button % to save the language. q Press the 6 button.
Controls
Mains switch 9 The mains switch 9 on the rear of the appliance switches the power supply on or off. When the mains switch has been switched on, the illuminated ring on button d 1 is lit green. The appliance is in stand by" mode. Warning Do not press the mains switch while the appliance is operating. Do not switch off the appliance until it is in standby mode. Function selector 8 Coffee, hot water or steam can be selected by rotating function selector 8.
d Risk of scalding!
When the function selector is set to 0, the nozzle may spurt slightly. Escaping steam is very hot.
The settings are displayed: Coffee on U COFFEE WATER ON UNIT IS HEATING STEAM ON MIND THE STEAM Hot water on 0 Steam on = Displays during the brief heating up period for Steam on.

Display 4 Display 4 indicates the settings, the processes which are running and any messages issued by the appliance. The appliance has been programmed at the factory with standard settings for optimum operation. These settings can be changed see Setting/Programming" chapter.
Button d 1 Button d 1 switches on the appliance or switches it to stand by" mode. When button d 1 is pressed, the appliance heats up and is then rinsed. The illuminated ring on button d 1 flashes during this process. The appliance is not rinsed if: - the appliance was still warm when switched on or - coffee was not discharged before the appliance was switched to stand by" mode. UNIT IS HEATING UNIT IS RINSING While coffee is being brewed, button d 1 is assigned a Stop function. If button d 1 is pressed, the process is terminated. Heating and rinsing processes are displayed.
i 4 hours after the last coffee was brewed, a rinsing
process is automatically actuated and the appliance switches to standby mode. These settings can be changed see Setting/Programming" chapter.
2on" button 2 Espresso or coffee can be brewed by pressing the 2 on" button 2. The green illuminated ring flashes while espresso or coffee is being brewed. If the 2on" button 2 is pressed again, the coffee brewing process is terminated.

Rotary knob for adjusting the filling quantity 3 x-u/8-9 The amount of liquid is set with the rotary knob x-u/8-9 3. One of 6 settings can be selected by rotating the knob in an anti clockwise direction: SMALL ESPRESSO ESPRESSO SMALL COFFEE COFFEE LARGE COFFEE XXL COFFEE One of 6 settings can be selected for 2 cups by rotating the knob in a clockwise direction: 2 SMALL ESPRESSO 2 ESPRESSO 2 SMALL COFFEES 2 COFFEES 2 LARGE COFFEES 2 XXL COFFEES Outlet 12 has two nozzles for filling 2 cups. Preparation
General
This fully automatic espresso/coffee machine grinds fresh coffee for each brewing process. Preferably use a mixture of espresso and coffee beans. Store or deep freeze in cool, air tight and sealed containers. Deep frozen coffee beans can also be ground. Function selector 8 must be on U. q Select the desired amount of coffee and number of cups with rotary knob x-u/8-9 3. q Select the preferred coffee strength with rotary knob /-M 5. q Place cup(s) under the outlet 12. If required, adjust the height of the outlet 12. q Press the 2on" button 2. The brewing process now runs automatically. Tip: If brewing coffee simultaneously for 2 cups, select STRONG or VERY STRONG.
Using espresso/coffee beans
i The brewing process can be terminated by pressing the 2on" button 2 or button d 1 again.
Note: If ADD BEANS is displayed despite a full bean container, the grinding unit must still be filled automatically. q Press the 2on" button 2 again.
Adjusting the grinding unit
q The desired degree of ground coffee can be selected with the Rotary knob for degree of ground coffee 10. Warning Adjust the degree of grinding only while the grinding unit is running! Otherwise the appliance may be damaged. q Press button 11 forwards and pull the drawer out of the appliance. q Press the 2on" button 2. q While the grinding unit is running, turn the knob to select the degree of grinding: the smaller the dots the finer the ground coffee.
i The new setting will not become apparent until the
second or third cup is brewed. q Insert the drawer.

Using ground espresso/coffee powder
q Select the desired filling quantity with rotary knob x-u/8-9 3. q Place cup(s) under the outlet 12. If required, adjust the height of the outlet 12. q Press button 11 forwards and pull the drawer out of the appliance. q Add one to two level scoops of medium fine ground coffee to the ground coffee duct 15. Warning Do not add whole beans or instant coffee! Add a maximum two scoops of coffee. q Close the cover on the duct for ground coffee 15. q Insert the drawer. q Press the 2on" button 2.
i Repeat the process for another cup of preground coffee.
Note: If coffee is not brewed within 90 seconds, the brewing chamber is emptied automatically in order to prevent overfilling. The appliance is rinsed.
Preparing hot water
q Push down sleeve a on nozzle 13. q Place an appropriate cup under the nozzle 13. q Rotate function selector 8 to 0 and fill the cup. d Risk of scalding! When the function selector is set to 0, the nozzle may spurt slightly. Escaping steam is very hot. Do not touch nozzle 13 or direct at people. q End the process by rotating the function selector 8 back to U.

Steam for heating drinks
q Push up sleeve a on nozzle 13. q Immerse nozzle 13 deep into the liquid which is to be heated. q Slowly rotate function selector 8 to =. The appliance now heats up for approx. 20 seconds. Then the liquid is heated. d Risk of scalding! When the function selector is set to =, the nozzle may spurt slightly. Escaping steam is very hot. Do not touch nozzle 13 or direct at people. q End the process by rotating the function selector 8 back to U. Note: Clean the nozzle 13 as soon as it has cooled down. Dried residue is difficult to remove.
Steam for frothing milk
q q q q
Push down sleeve a on nozzle 13. Fill a cup approx. 1/3 full of milk. Immerse the nozzle 13 approx. 1 cm into the milk. Slowly rotate function selector 8 to =. The appliance now heats up for approx. 20 seconds. The milk is then frothed. d Risk of scalding! When the function selector is set to =, the nozzle may spurt slightly. Escaping steam is very hot. Do not touch nozzle 13 or direct at people.
q Slowly rotate the cup. q End the process by rotating the function selector 8 back to U. Note: When the nozzle 13 has cooled down, clean immediately see Cleaning / Cleaning the nozzle" chapter. Dried residue is difficult to remove and impairs formation of the milk froth. Tip: Use cold semi skimmed milk preferably.

Changing settings / programming
The appliance has been set at the factory so that coffee can be brewed without any additional programming. These basic settings can be changed with the function buttons under display 4.

Note: There is always a small amount of water left in the water tank 19. Water tank 19 is missing or not inserted correctly. Insert water tank 19. Add coffee beans to the bean container 16.

Cleaning the appliance

Pull out the mains plug before cleaning the appliance. Warning Do not use scouring agents! Never immerse the appliance in water! Do not use a steam cleaner! q Wipe the outside of the appliance with a damp cloth. q Rinse out the water tank 19 and fill with fresh water. q Remove and empty tray 22 and coffee dregs tray 20. Only the coffee dregs tray 20 may be cleaned in the dishwasher! q Clean contacts. q Wipe out or vacuum the inside of the appliance (trays). Note: If the appliance is switched on in a cold state with button d 1 or is set to standby after brewing coffee, the appliance is automatically rinsed. The system therefore cleans itself.

Cleaning programme
CLEAN UNIT
If the illuminated ring on the + button 6 is lit red and the message CLEAN UNIT is indicated on display 4 when the appliance is switched on, the appliance must be cleaned as quickly as possible. Clean the appliance with the enclosed cleaning tablet. Insert a cleaning tablet only when requested. These tablets have been specially developed for this appliance and are available from customer service (order no. 31 0655).
i While the cleaning programme is running, the illuminated
ring on the + button 6 flashes. Warning Never interrupt the cleaning programme! Do not drink liquid! Never use descaling tablets or other descaling agents.
CLEAN UNIT

While the cleaning programme is running approx. 15 minutes - processes and instructions are indicated on display 4. Starting the cleaning programme q Completely fill water tank 19. q Hold down button 6 for at least 3 seconds. q Empty and re insert tray 22 and coffee dregs tray 20. Note: The appliance is automatically cleaned. Wait for the next display (approx. 1 minute). q Press button 11 forwards and pull the drawer out of the appliance. q Open the cover on the duct for ground coffee 15. q Insert a cleaning tablet into duct 15. q Close the cover on the duct for ground coffee 15. q Insert the drawer. q Press the 2on" button 2.

Descaling the appliance
UNIT CALCIF.
If the illuminated ring on the calc descaling 4button 7 is lit red and the message UNIT CALCIF. is displayed when the appliance is switched on, the appliance must be descaled immediately. The appliance may be damaged if it is not descaled according to the instructions. Warning Never descale the appliance with vinegar or vinegar based agents! Do not use cleaning tablets. Never interrupt the descaling programme! Do not drink liquid!
i A descaling agent is enclosed with the appliance.
Specially developed and suitable agents are available from customer service (order no.: 31 0451). flashes while the descaling programme is running.

FILTER NO/OLD
Warning The descaling programme starts in the FILTER NO/OLD programming only. Never descale the appliance with inserted filter. While the descaling programme is running approx. 35 minutes - processes and instructions are indicated on display 4. The indicated times may deviate. Starting the descaling programme q Hold down the descaling button calc 4 7 for at least 3 seconds. q Empty and re insert tray 22 and coffee dregs tray 20. q Fill water tank 19 with water and add descaling agent total volume of liquid 0.5 litres. or q Add 0.5 litres of prepared decaling mixture. q Place an appropriately large receptacle under nozzle 13. q Set function selector 8 to 0.

Draining hot water
SYSTEM TOO HOT
The descaling programme requires a specific water temperature before it can start. If the water temperature is too high, drain hot water first! q Place a suitable receptacle under the nozzle 13. q Set function selector 8 to 0. Water runs into the receptacle. q Set function selector 8 to U. The required temperature has been reached. The descaling process can start.
Eliminating minor faults yourself
Fault ADD BEANS displayed despite full bean container. No hot water or steam discharge. Froth insufficient or too runny. Cause Grinding unit has still not been filled automatically. Nozzle 13 is blocked. Rotary knob 13/a on inlet valve 13/b not secure. Blocked inlet valve 13/b. Unsuitable milk. Degree of grinding too fine. Preground coffee too fine. Unsuitable type of coffee. Beans no longer fresh. Degree of grinding not appropriate for coffee beans. Beans are not falling into the grinding unit (too oily). Current programming is set to: FILTER YES/NEW or FILTER CHANGE displayed. System too hot. System too hot. FILTER CHANGE displayed. Remedial action Press button 2on" 2 again. Thoroughly clean nozzle 13. Press the rotary knob 13/a securely into the inlet valve 13/b. Clean inlet valve 13/b. Use cold semi skimmed milk. Set coarser degree of grinding. Use a coarser ground coffee. Change the type of coffee. Use fresh beans. Optimise degree of grinding. Gently tap the bean container. Set programming to FILTER NO/OLD Never descale with inserted filter Let out some of the hot water. Let out some of the hot water. Change filter.
Coffee is running a drop at a time. Coffee has no crema" (layer of f h) (l f froth).
Grind unit is not grinding coffee beans. Descaling programme is not starting.

Fault Grinding unit is making loud noise. Display ERROR 1 Display ERROR 5 or
Cause Foreign objects in the grinding unit (e.g. grit which also occurs in superior types of coffee). Appliance too cold. Technical fault.
Remedial action Contact Hotline. Note: Preground coffee can still be prepared. Wait until the appliance has warmed up to room temperature. Switch off the appliance for at least 10 seconds with the mains switch 9 9.
ERROR 8 If faults cannot be eliminated, always call the Hotline!
