You can also use OAKLEY THUMP to backup important files and transport any kind of file from one computer to another. OAKLEY THUMP combines a digital music player with Oakley's world-class sunglass technology. Patented XYZ Optics® maintains critical clarity at all angles of vision, even at the periphery of raked-back lens contours that maximize protection against sun, wind and side impact. Lightweight O Matter® frame material offers all-day comfort. The lenses are made of pure , Plutonite® a material that filters out 100% of all UVA, UVB, UVC and harmful blue light. WHAT YOU NEED TO GET STARTED Your OAKLEY THUMP comes with the following components: USB Cable USB Connector SETTING UP OAKLEY THUMP TO PLAY MUSIC To set up OAKLEY THUMP, first charge the battery. The battery will reach 80% charge after one hour, but a full three-hour charge is recommended. Then with OAKLEY THUMP connected to your computer, drag-and-drop files from your computer hard drive to the OAKLEY THUMP drive icon or folder. OAKLEY THUMP will play song files in AAC, MP3, WMA or WAV file format. STEP 1: CHARGE THE BATTERY. With the USB cable, connect OAKLEY THUMP directly to your computer's USB port. OAKLEY THUMP will draw a small amount of electricity from your computer to charge its internal battery. (The USB cable can also connect OAKLEY THUMP to an optional Wall Charger, or you can use your OAKLEY THUMP Car Charger, both sold separately. See the accessory card for more information.) The USB cable plugs into the bottom of OAKLEY THUMP, behind the ear boom on the right side. Be sure the earphone boom is pushed back to expose the Mini-B USB receptacle in the eyewear frame. Release the protective cover from the connection port. When plugging in the USB cable, be sure to align the plug correctly. If the plug will not go in, try flipping it over. Use only the USB cable included with OAKLEY THUMP and be sure you have the right connection port on your computer. USB PORT Mini-B OAKLEY THUMP To use OAKLEY THUMP with a Microsoft® Windows® PC, you must have: · Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows ME. Windows 98SE users must download the USB Mass Storage Device Driver from www.oakley.com/thump or call Oakley in the U.S. at 1 (800) 969-2895 and arrange to have a CD sent. Customers outside of the U.S. should contact their local corporate office. See the end of this manual for international contact information. (Note that OAKLEY THUMP cannot be used with Windows NT.) · A USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 connection port To use OAKLEY THUMP with a Macintosh® you must have: , · Mac OS 10.1.5, Mac OS 10.2 or Mac OS 10.3 · A USB connection port 4 5 STEP 2: TRANSFER THE MUSIC FILES. If your OAKLEY THUMP is not already attached to your computer, attach it now with the USB cable. In Windows Explorer, OAKLEY THUMP will show up as a removable disk drive. Doubleclick the disk drive called "THUMP". This will show songs that come preloaded in the OAKLEY THUMP memory. Open a second folder window that shows the AAC, MP3, WMA or WAV music files currently stored on your computer. (See "Transferring Music from CDs" for information on how to convert CD music to these compressed file formats.) Now drag-and-drop the files from your hard drive folder to the OAKLEY THUMP folder window. The songs will play back in the order in which you drag-and-drop them. You can also play them at random. See the Quick Reference guide for more information. STEP 3: DISCONNECT WITH "EJECT". Because your computer recognizes OAKLEY THUMP as a removable disk drive, you must "eject" OAKLEY THUMP from the computer using a software command. Unplugging the USB cable without ejecting OAKLEY THUMP may result in data loss. · For Windows: In the Windows Task Bar (the row of small icons which is usually located at the bottom right of the screen), click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon ( ) with your left mouse button. A small window pops up. Click on the words "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device." · For Macintosh: Go to the Finder and click on "File" then Eject "OAKLEY THUMP." Alternative method: Click on the "OAKLEY THUMP" icon on the Mac Desktop and drag it to the "Eject" icon on the Dock. STEP 4: PLAY MUSIC. After OAKLEY THUMP has been properly "ejected" from your computer, disconnect the USB cable. Adjust the earphone extenders to fit your ears. Note that the earphones pivot in and out, and each earphone is mounted on a telescoping boom for moving forward and back. Press and hold the Play / Pause button until the power-up tone is heard. THUMP will begin playing the first song. See the Quick Reference guide for information on controls. 6 7 SUPPORTED MUSIC FILE FORMATS OAKLEY THUMP supports multiple file formats. AAC, MP3 and WMA are more compressed than WAV file formats, so using them will allow you to fit more songs in the internal memory. · AAC (.M4A) · MP3 (up to 320 kbps) · MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR) · WMA · WMA DRM · WAV TRANSFERRING MUSIC FROM CDS To transfer songs from a music CD to OAKLEY THUMP, you must first convert the CD music into one of the supported file formats. If you have a CD burner, the software included with the burner may have this ability. Otherwise, there are many music-playing programs that also convert files. Check the Internet for these free third-party programs. One or more might already be installed on your computer. Look in your computer menu for a media program that plays CDs, then select Help from the menu and look for "file conversion," "AAC," "MP3," "WMA" or "rip." Once the files are converted, use the directions above to transfer them to OAKLEY THUMP. WARNING: This product is for your personal use only. Unauthorized recording or duplication of copyrighted material may infringe upon the rights of third parties and may be contrary to copyright laws. STORE ANY KIND OF FILE OAKLEY THUMP can store music files and data files at the same time. You can use OAKLEY THUMP to backup important files, and transport files to any computer that has a USB connection port. TO STORE DATA FILES ON OAKLEY THUMP Follow the directions for transferring music files, and simply drag-and-drop files of any format. OAKLEY THUMP 256MB, 512MB or 1GB will store the files in its memory. To retrieve the files from OAKLEY THUMP, follow the directions for connecting OAKLEY THUMP to a computer. Dragand-drop the stored files out of the OAKLEY THUMP folder window, moving them to your computer desktop screen or another folder window. Be sure to use the "eject" procedure when disconnecting OAKLEY THUMP from your computer. 8 9 CHARGING THE BATTERY Battery life depends on many things, including volume level, external temperature and music file format. Under ideal conditions, the internal lithium battery will provide approximately six hours of continuous playing time. If OAKLEY THUMP hasn't been used for a while, the battery may need to be recharged. The small indicator light (on the inner side of the right earstem) will blink red when the remaining battery power is less than 10%. When the battery is low, you will hear warning tones between songs and during songs with more than 10 minutes remaining. Charge the internal battery by connecting OAKLEY THUMP to your computer or an optional Wall Charger or Car Charger. · For charging with your computer, the computer must be turned on and cannot be in Sleep or Suspend mode. · For charging with an optional Wall Charger, make sure the charger is plugged into a working electrical outlet. OAKLEY THUMP will be 80% charged after one hour, but a full three-hour charge is recommended. When OAKLEY THUMP is fully charged, the small indicator light will turn solid green. USB PORT ACCESSORIES Go to www.oakley.com/thump to purchase accessories for OAKLEY THUMP. Available accessories include: · Oakley Car Charger · Oakley World Wall Charger · Oakley USB Cable · OAKLEY THUMP Soft Vault · OAKLEY THUMP Soft Box New accessories may be available in the future. Visit www.oakley.com/thump for an updated list of all available accessories. WARNING: Use only accessories made by Oakley. Using third-party charger accessories could lead to electric shock and injury, and will void the warranty. 10 11 TROUBLESHOOTING RESETTING OAKLEY THUMP Most problems can be solved by resetting OAKLEY THUMP: · To reset OAKLEY THUMP, hold down the Play / Pause button and the Previous Song / Rewind button at the same time. Resetting OAKLEY THUMP will not erase the songs or files stored in memory. · If the reset procedure does not work, you may need to restore the internal software. See "Software Restore and Update" below. IF OAKLEY THUMP WON'T TURN ON · Be sure to press and hold the Play / Pause button until the power-up tone is heard. · Hold down the Play / Pause button and the Previous Song / Rewind button at the same time. · It may need a recharge. Connect OAKLEY THUMP to your computer or an optional charger. (If using an optional Wall Charger, be sure the charger is plugged into a working electrical outlet.) A full three-hour charge is recommended. · If the reset procedure does not work, you may need to restore the internal software. See "Software Restore and Update" below. IF OAKLEY THUMP WON'T PLAY MUSIC · Make sure the volume is not set too low for you to hear the music. · Make sure the battery is charged. Connect OAKLEY THUMP to your computer or an optional charger. When OAKLEY THUMP is fully charged, the small indicator light will turn solid green. · Make sure OAKLEY THUMP has music files in its memory. Connect OAKLEY THUMP to your computer and open the folder that shows the contents of the OAKLEY THUMP memory. Your computer will refer to this folder as a removable drive. (See "Setting Up OAKLEY THUMP to Play Music" for more information.) · Make sure you have the correct music file formats loaded into the OAKLEY THUMP memory. OAKLEY THUMP plays AAC, MP3, WMA and WAV file formats. IF SONGS PLAY AT DIFFERENT VOLUME LEVELS · Prerecorded music (WAV files or compressed files that were originally recorded in analog) may sound louder or quieter than other songs on OAKLEY THUMP. When recording WAV files or converting analog files to digital format, be careful to adjust the volume level to match the other songs in your music collection. SOFTWARE RESTORE AND UPDATE Oakley periodically updates OAKLEY THUMP software to add features and improve performance. You can choose to either restore or update your OAKLEY THUMP software. · If you choose restore, all songs and data files stored on OAKLEY THUMP will be erased when the internal software is restored. · If you choose update, the software will be updated but songs and data files stored on OAKLEY THUMP will not be affected. Visit www.oakley.com/thump/support to ensure you have the latest software available. 12 13 SAFETY AND HANDLING WARNING: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK WARNING: Using headphones while operating a motor vehicle, motorcycle, watercraft or bicycle may be dangerous, and is illegal in some states. Check your local laws. Use caution while using your OAKLEY THUMP when you are engaging in ANY activity that requires your full attention. While engaging in any such activity, removal of the speakers from your ear area or turning off your OAKLEY THUMP will keep you from being distracted, so as to avoid accident or injury. AVOID HEARING DAMAGE WARNING: Using the headphones at high volume may result in permanent hearing loss. If you experience ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or discontinue using OAKLEY THUMP. With continued use at high volume, your ears may become accustomed to the sound level, which may result in permanent damage to your hearing. Keep OAKLEY THUMP volume at a safe level. DO NOT EXPOSE TO MOISTURE WARNING: Using OAKLEY THUMP in or near water or other liquids, or in wet locations, may cause electric shock and serious injury. The frame is not waterproof, so follow these safeguards: · Do not use OAKLEY THUMP during prolonged periods of perspiration. · Do not use OAKLEY THUMP while swimming or bathing. · Do not wear OAKLEY THUMP in the rain. · If any food or liquid is spilled on OAKLEY THUMP or its optional power adapter, unplug the USB cable from OAKLEY THUMP and unplug the power adapter from the electrical outlet before drying. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISMANTLE WARNING: Do not attempt to open OAKLEY THUMP or its optional power adapter. Doing so may expose you to electric shock and serious injury.
