Here Are Questions Many People Ask @ -About Safety Belts and the Answers A: &: Won't I be trappedin the vehicle after an
accident ifI'm wearing a safety belt?
If I'm,a good driver, and never drive far from I home, why shouldI wear safety belts?
You may be an excellent driver, but if you're in an accident -- even one that isn't your fault you and -your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn't protect you from things beyond.your control, such as bad drivers. Most accidentsoccur within 25 miles (40 k ) m of home. And the greatest number serious injuries of and deathsoccur .at speeds of less than 40 mph (65 km/fi). Safety belts are everyone. for
,
A:
You could be, -- whether you're wearing a safety 1 belt or not. But you can unbuckle a safetybelt, even if you're upside down. And yourchance of being conscious during and after an accident, so you can unbuckle and get out, is much greater if you are belted.
&.' Why don't theyjust put in air bags people so
won't have to wear safety belts?
A:
Air bags are in many vehicles today and will be in more of them in the future. But they are supplemental'systemsonly; so they work with ,safety belts-- not instead of them. Everyair bag system ever offered for sale has required use of the safety belts.Even if you're in a vehicle that has air bags, you stillhave to buckle up to getthe most protection. That's true only in frontal collisions, not but especially inside and other collisions.
