For detailed information, please refer to the Appendix. Antenna Do not use any antenna not authorized by Pantech. Using such antenna may cause malfunction or serious damage to the phone. Electronic Devices RF signals emitted from your mobile phone may adversely affect the electronic devices that are inadequately shielded from such signals. Traffic Safety You should check and observe local traffic regulations before using your mobile phone. Do not use your phone while driving. If unavoidable to use the phone, use a hands-free kit in a safe area. In-vehicle Electronic Devices RF (Radio Frequency) signals may adversely affect the electronic devices or systems in your car. Medical Devices Turn off your mobile phone in hospitals or healthcare facilities and make sure to observe facility rules and regulations. When near a pacemaker or other medical device(s), turn off your phone as it may interfere with the operation of such device. Public Place Turn off your mobile phone in public areas where the use of mobile phones is prohibited. One displays only icons to show the status of the phone while the other shows messages, telephone numbers, icons, or other information. An icon(s) is displayed when a certain function is activated, or a message has been received, or in idle mode. The figure above displays a list of all the possible icons that may be positioned at the top of the screen. The function of each icon is described below. Signal strength Call-active Ringtone Shows the strength of the RF signal. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Indicates that a call is in progress. With your phone flip closed, you can use SMS, Call Log View, and Camera functions using the keys on the side of the handset. Basic key operation SIDE UP KEYS (Vol Up) Either activate external LCD menus, or allow you to scroll through the menu options. °ÿ Pressing and holding the [ ]key activates the sub menu. Allow you to scroll through the menu options. SIDE DOWN KEYS (Vol down) Indicates that the ringing type is in melody mode Indicates that the ringing type is in either Vibration vibration mode or manner mode (Vibration mode:green/Etiquette mode:blue) Indicates that the ringing type is either in Vib + Ringtone vibration mode followed by melody mode or in vibration melody mode. Indicates that there is an unread message(s). SMS Message When messages have been stored in the SIM card to the maximum storage capacity, this icon flickers. Alarm Indicates that an alarm has been set. Roaming AutoAnswering Recorded message Battery Indicates that roaming service is supported. Indicates that the Auto-answering function has been activated. When the quantity of recorded messages becomes 10, or the maximum quantity, it changes to . Indicates that there is a recorded message(s) that has not been read yet. Shows remaining battery power. When the external LCD menu has been activated, this key enables you to select/ cancel a menu option. When not activated, it functions as the SIDE CAMERA [ ]key. KEY °ÿ Short press the key once: to select a menu. °ÿ Long press the key: to cancel a menu, or to activate the camera(with the phone flip opened or closed). Performing the external LCD menu options With the flip closed, press and hold the [ ]key to activate the external LCD menu shown in the picture on the left. Use the [ ], [ ]keys to scroll through the menu options, and the [ ]key to select (short press) or cancel(long press) them. 13 12 Description of Menu Options (1) SMS inbox : You can check the contents of SMS/EMS received without opening the handset flip. To edit or resend the checked messages, open the flip and perform corresponding tasks. (2) All calls : You can check detailed call information without opening the flip. You can use the [ ] key to view detailed call information, or the [ ] key to make a call. (3) Album : You can view the pictures taken without opening the phone flip. To enlarge and view a desired picture, press the [ ] key. Other Functions Available 1) You can check time in the external LCD. Press the [ ]key to check the present time. - Depending on a set value, Analog/Digital Watch, D-day Info or Greetings may appear. 2) Scheduler : Pressing and holding the [ ]key enables you to view the Scheduler. With the Scheduler displayed, you can use the [ ], [ ]keys to move to the desired date. Press and hold the [ ]key to move to one month before, and the [ ]key to move to one month after. You can check your schedule on a selected date by pressing the [ ]key. If you wish to edit the contents of the schedule, open the folder and perform corresponding tasks. 14 The following table shows a list of function keys, each of which has one or more functions. Key Icon Name Key Function Press this key to place a call or answer an incoming call (except when the answer type is ANY KEY ANSWER, Auto Answer and Flip Open (but if flip has been opened you can answer the incoming call by pressing the send key in flip open mode). If you wish to see the list of all recent calls, press this key once. Press this key to end a call or to convert to standby mode from menu mode. Press and hold this key to turn your phone on or off. Press this key to select or activate the menu displaced on the screen. Press this key to enter into the main menu and sub SEND KEY END KEY OK KEY MEMU KEY menu(if the function has the sub menu). CLEAR KEY Press this key to delete a single character, or press and hold this key to delete all characters. Press this key to return to the previous screen. Press one of the four keys (left, right, up, and NAVIGATION down) to move the cursor from the menu list or KEYS with editor. shortcut keys During a call, press the [ ]key to view the to WAP, list of recent calls received or the [ ]key to Sound setting, view the list of calls you could not answer. Message and If you press this key on the idle screen, you can Phonebook easily access the Phonebook, Sound Setting, SMS, or My Menu (Hot Folder). 15 Press this key if you wish to adjust the call volume during a call. In idle mode, press and hold the SIDE UP and Down key to enter the schedule mode. In the idle DOWN KEYS mode, press and hold the Up key to activate the sub-menu. Installing SIM card In order for you to use the phone the first time, you must follow the steps shown below. Install the SIM card inside the handset. When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a plugin SIM card loaded with your subscription information (such as PIN number, available optional services, etc.). If necessary, turn off your phone by pressing and holding the [ ]key until a closing message appears. 1. Remove the battery from the phone. 2. Check the sim slot is empty and install the SIM card into the slot. CAMERA KEY WAP KEY From the idle screen, press this key to directly access the [ ] menu. From the idle screen, press this key to directly access the [ ] menu. In idle mode, press and hold this key to convert to Side camera the [Camera Preview] mode. key In idle mode, press this key to shift between the main and sub menus. 3. If you wish to remove the SIM card, push it in the arrow direction shown in the picture below. 16 17 Installing the Battery As shown in the picture below, fix the part where the metal groove of the battery is located into the groove at the bottom of the handset. 1. Insert the part where the metal groove of the battery is located into the groove at the bottom of the handset. Charging the Battery Your phone is powered by a charged Li-ion battery. Use only authorized batteries and chargers. Ask your Pantech dealer for more information. You may use the phone while the battery is charging. In case the battery has been installed in the phone, open the cover of the Power Adaptor Connectors at the bottom of the phone, and connect the adaptor, which has been supplied together with the phone, to the outlet of the Power Adaptor Connectors. When the battery is fully charged, disconnect the adapter from the connector. 2. Then press the top of the battery until it snaps. 18 19 Turning your phone on Press and hold the [ phone on. ]key for approximately 3 seconds to turn your Ending a call If you wish to cancel or disconnect a call, press the [ the flip. ]key or close Turning your phone off Press and hold the [ ]key to turn your phone off. Answering a call When the phone rings a melody or vibrates, the screen will display the name or telephone number of the caller, provided that you have been subscribed to your telecommunications service provider for such service. The caller's name will be displayed only when his/her telephone number and name are archived in the Phone Book. If you wish to answer a call in normal mode, simply press the [ ]key. If the answer mode is set to [Any Key], you can answer a call by pressing any key except the [ ]key. Making a call Press and hold the [ ]key to turn your phone on. When the "Insert SIM card" message appears on the screen, insert the SIM card into the SIM slot. Enter your PIN number (up to 8 characters) to unlock the handset (if applicable). If the correct PIN number has been entered, the search for the subscribed network will start automatically. In idle mode, enter the phone number with the area code. Then, press the [ ]key to place a call. If you wish to place an international call, press and hold the [ ]key until the '+' symbol appears on the screen. Then, dial the country code, area code and telephone number. For a delay of 2 seconds, you can insert the 'P' pause symbol between each code and telephone number by pressing and holding the [ ] key. You can make an emergency call without the SIM card. Dial the number 112, and press the [ ]key to make an emergency call. Adjusting the earpiece volume During a call, if you wish to adjust the earpiece volume, use the volume key on the side of the phone to select the desired level from the 8 different volume levels. Browsing the main menu If you wish to enter into the main menu from the idle screen, press the [ ]key. Press the [ ] or [ ]key to exit the menu and return to the idle screen. With the navigation keys, [ ][ ] and [ ][ ], you can select an item from the item menu. You can answer the question by pressing the [ ]key for 'Yes' and the [ ]key for 'No.' 21 20 Inputting characters and numbers To input a number, press the number keypad associated with the number you wish to input. To input characters from your phone, you must be in the 'T9' mode (such as Phonebook and Message). For additional information, see the 'T9' section in the Appendix. Press the [ ] key to delete a character, or press and hold the [ ] key to delete all characters in a line. If you press and hold the [ ] key for an extended period of time, all characters on the screen will be erased. Speed Dial There are two ways to make a phone call from the idle screen. The general method is to dial the destination number and press the [ ] key; the other is to use the speed dial function. There are two ways to make a call using the speed dial function. If the index number of the phone number you wish to call is a single digit number (1~9), simply press and hold the index number. If the index number is a double digit number (10 ~ 99), press the index number and then press the [ ] key. Then, your phone will attempt to make a call to that number automatically. For example, if the index number of a phone number stored in the phonebook is '5,' pressing and holding the [ ] key will place a call to the phone number associated with the index. The index range available for using the speed dial is 01 through 99. Making an international call To make an international call, press and hold the [ ]key until you see a `+' sign on the screen. Once you see the `+' sign, enter the destination country code. Making an emergency call You can make an emergency call by entering 112 (emergency number) and pressing the [ ]key. If you are within the GSM network range, you may make emergency phone calls in any country whether a SIM card has been installed in your phone or not. Incoming call in standby If you failed to answer an incoming call for whatever reason, your phone will display a message reminding you that you missed the call. If you wish to call the number of the missed call, select [MENU] -> [Call logs] -> [Missed calls]. Use the [ ][ ]key to scroll to the number you wish to call and press the [ ]key to dial. 22 23 Shortcut to the Phone Book From the idle screen, pressing the Down key of Navigation enables you to move directly to the features of the Phonebook without going through the Main menu. Last number dialed/received In order to view the list of recently made or received calls, press the [ ]key. If you find a phone number in the phone number list, which you wish to call, select the number by using the [ ] [ ]key. Then, press the [ ]key to call the number. If you press the [ ]key, the information on the selected number will be displayed. Options during a call While you are on the phone, you may use the following call options by pressing the [ ]key. [Menu] 1. Phonebook 2. Messages 3. Volume 4. Hold 5. End current 6. Mute on 7. DTMF on/off The functions of some of the options are described below. Phonebook ­ You can look through the phonebook. Message ­ You can read and write SMS/EMS and check Voicemail. Volume ­ You can adjust the phone speaker volume. Hold ­ You may take another call while putting the currently active phone call on hold. End current ­ Selecting this function ends the currently active call among several calls. Mute ­ When this function is activated while you are on the phone, the recipient will not hear any sound. DTMF on/off ­ Allows you to set the DTMF tone for On or Off. Call waiting (To use this function, you must subscribe to the service with your network service provider.) On an incoming call, press the [ ]key to select one of the following call options. [Menu] 1. Hold Answer 2. Reject 3. If you could not find the word what you want, just press [ ]key for next possible candidates. You can switch the lowercase to the capital letter or the capital letter to one capital letter mode by pressing [ ]key. Also you can insert period by pressing key [ ]. Blank space can be added by pressing [ ]. You can shift input mode by pressing [ ] or [ ] arrow keys. Alternately, you can switch to T9 number mode by long pressing [ ]key and to T9 Symbol mode by long pressing [ ]key. Multi-tap English In this mode, you can insert special English word something like name, nickname, abbreviations and so on. T9 English has special dictionary to find and to list candidates up. As like ordinary mobile phone, you can input alphabets by pressing a key several times `til finding the character. By pressing key [ ] you can easily shift to Capitalized letter to lowercase to T9 number easily. ShiftCapsLOCK LONG press Symbols 26 27 MENU TYPE Your mobile phone provides two different menu types: the basic menu and "hot holder (short cut)." If you wish to select the main menu via the basic menu, press the key. Or you can access the hot folder menu by pressing the key or key. You can add pictures, animations, melodies and emoticons to a text message and designate text properties through EMS. ®T ®T ®T Used records - Displays the number of messages stored in the SIM card. Unread records - Displays the number of unread messages. (The total capacity of the SIM card memory, the number of messages stored, and number of messages unread) Creating/Sending/Storing a message Before getting started First, check whether the service center number is set up. This number is usually provided by your service provider and stored in the SIM card. Create ­ Writes new messages that contain media items such as animation. Inbox ­ Displays the list of received messages Outbox ­ Displays the list of messages waiting to be sent. Archive ­ Displays the list of messages stored in the phone memory. Settings ­ For details, see the settings menu. Detailed functions of settings Message center - Allows the URL of proxy relay or allows MMSC to be set. Message lifetime - Adjusts the lifetime of messages (1 hour ~ 6 months). Message format - Determines the message format (Normal, Fax, Voicemail, ERMES, National paging, X.400, Internet) Creating a message Insert item Allows you to insert an item to a text message. 1. Choose the "Create" option and press the [ ]key. 2. While creating a message, you can choose the "Insert Items" by pressing the [ ]key. 3. From the "Insert Items," you may choose from Picture/ Animation/ Melody/ Message/ Emoticon. 4. "Predefined" and "Load" will be displayed on the screen. 5. Use the [ ]key to choose an item and press the [ The chosen item will be loaded. Predefined ­ Loads items stored in your phone memory. (This does not appear on Picture/Message.) Load - Loads the items stored in the file system. *File size limit for EMS files Picture- 16*16(pixel), 32*32(pixel) Melody- 128 byte ]key. Used space ­ Displays the current status of SIM. Detailed functions of Used Space Capacity - Displays the maximum storage capacity of the SIM card memory. 30 Animation- 8*8(pixel), 16*16(pixel) *File extension names available for EMS items (for Load) Picture- *.wbmp Animation- *.awb Melody- *.imy 31 Sending the message After writing the message, press the [ ]key. ]key. 1 2 3 4 5 Storing messages Storing messages in the SIM card Choose "Send" and press the [ 1. After creating a message, press the [ ]key. 2. Select "Save" and press the [ ]key. 3. With the popup of "Saving message -> Message saved," the message is saved in the SIM card. Storing messages in the file system You may input the recipient's phone number, or retrieve the number from the "Phone Book" via the [ ] option. "Predefined" and "Load" will be displayed on the screen. After inputting the phone number, press the [ ]key to send the message. You will see a sending animation and the transmission progress (e.g. 1/3) on the screen. 1. Press the [ ]key after creating a message. 2. Select "Archive" and press the [ ]key. 3. Select "Save" and press <> to input a filename for your message. 4. The message will be stored in the file system once you press the Text style You may change the properties of text messages. [ ]key. 1. Press the [ ]key while creating a message. 2. Choose "Text style" and press the [ ]key. 3. You can choose from Underline/Bold/Strikeout. Receiving a message When you receive a message, you will be alerted by a bell sound, and a "received message" animation will run on the screen. The number of messages received will then be displayed on the idle screen. (If you receive a message with multiple pages, the alert will sound when the last page is received.) Messages stored in the SIM card T9 options See the Appendix on how to use the Editor. Received messages are stored in the SIM card. If the memory has been fully occupied, you can no longer receive messages. In such case, an icon indicating that SIM memory has been fully occupied will be displayed on the idle screen. You can receive more messages by emptying stored messages. 33 32 Storing messages with attached files You may store Picture/Animation/Melody/Message/Emoticon in the phone memory if the received message contains them. (Only userdefined items are possible.) Checking Inbox, Outbox or Archive messages Inbox (messages received) Select the Inbox menu and press the [ ]key to display the list of messages in the Inbox. This list shows, for each message, the caller number and the corresponding name in the Phone Book. From the list provided in the Inbox, choose a desired message by pressing the [ ]key. The chosen message appears on the screen. If the message contains an item, put the cursor behind the item. If the item is an animation, it will start to move. If it is a melody, you will hear sound. If you press the [ ]key, the following pops up for your selection: "Edit", "Delete", "Forward", "Text Reply" and "Voice call." 1. Place the cursor behind the item while you check the message. 2. Press the [ ]key to set the file name and directory. 3. The message is stored in the file system. 4. Stored items may be sent out via the following steps under the 'Create' option: [Insert item] -> [Picture/Animation/Melody/Message] -> [Load]. Page limit in "Create" The maximum number of pages allowed for each message under the "Create" option is 7 pages. Every time a page is completed and moves to the next page, a popup (e.g. SMS1) appears. *Maximum words allowed per text-only message - English 153 characters * 6 pages + 1(input of the 7th page number) = 919 characters. 1 2 3 4 Outbox (messages to be sent) Select the "Outbox" menu and press the [ the list of messages in the Outbox. MMS setting Save messages : Determines whether or not to store all the messages in the Sent mailbox. Deliver receipts : Demands the confirmation on whether or not a sent message has been successfully delivered to the recipient, or determines whether or not to send a confirming report when an incoming message demands a delivery report. MMS center : Sets the address of the MMS center. 37 Inbox [MENU] Edit - Edits received and sent messages. Delete - Deletes a message. Forward - Forwards a received message to another person. Text Reply - Writes and sends a new message with the sender's number set as the default. Voice call - Makes a call to the sender's number. °ÿ Outbox menu [MENU] Edit - Edits received and sent messages. Delete - Deletes a message. Forward - Forwards a received message to another person. °ÿ Archive menu [MENU] View - Views messages stored in the Archive. Info - Displays the type of message (SMS/EMS), saved date and time, and data size. Delete - Deletes messages stored in the Archive. Rename - Renames a message. 36 WAP Profile : Sets the configuration of the WAP profile used when receiving or sending MMS messages. MMS life time : Determines the lifetime of MMS messages. MMS download : Automatic : New messages are downloaded onto the background as soon as they are received, and you receive notification when the download is complete. On read : New messages are downloaded when you decide to read them. 2 3 Enter the desired text (i.e., "Hello, the World") for the message, and then press the [ ]key. You may attach an image or sound object to the multimedia message, or change or delete them. The [ ]key enables you to use the following menu options. ­ Add picture : To insert an image, press the [ ]key and select "Add picture" or "Add photo". Select a picture file (*.bmp, *.jpg, *.gif, *.png) from the list, and press the [ ]key. ­ Add photo : To insert an image file stored by the camera, press the [ ] key and select "Add photo". Select a picture file (*.jpg) and press the [ ]key. ­ Change picture, Change photo : To change an object already inserted, press the [ ]key and select "Change image", "Change photo" or "Change sound." Then, select and change the desired file. ­ Add sound : To insert a sound file, press the [ ]key and select "Add sound". Choose the desired sound file (*.imy, *.mid, *.mmf) by pressing the [ ]key. ­ Apply template : You may reorganize your current message by using stored templates. ­ Add page : To add a new page, press the [ ]key and select "Add page.". ­ Delete object : To delete an inserted object, press the [ ]key and select "Delete object". Selecting the object you wish to delete and pressing the [ ]key will delete the object. 39 Spam filter : Sets a spam filter for the MMS messages that are set as "Advertisement". Off : Receives all MMS messages. Prompt if spam : Asks if you will download spam messages or not. Reject spam : Rejects all spam messages. Writing and sending multimedia messages You can write a new message by selecting the "Create" option. When you select this option, the screen displays the first page of a MMS message. On top of the message screen is the Status Bar that shows the information and status of the message. This bar shows whether the current page of the message contains sound and the message size and the page number of the message. 1 Select MMS from the Message menu, scroll to "Create" and press the [ ]key. 38
