Clean the soleplate with a soft cloth. - Fully unwind the mains cord (J) and supply hose (L). - Place the steam tank (B) on a stable, level surface. - Place the iron on the iron stand (C). Tips · First check whether there is a label with ironing instructions in the garment. Always follow the ironing instructions on the garment label. · If these instructions are missing but you do know what kind of fabric the garment is made of, consult the table for the recommended ironing temperatures. 5 · This table is only valid for plain fabrics. If some kind of finish (gloss, crinkle, relief etc.) has been applied to the material, it is best ironed at a low temperature. · Sort the laundry according to ironing temperature before you start: put wool with wool, cotton with cotton, etc. · The iron heats up more quickly than it cools down. As a result, it is best to start with the articles that need to be ironed at the lowest temperature, such as those made of synthetic fibres. Then continue with the garments requiring a higher ironing temperature. · If the fabric consists of various kinds of fibres, always select the temperature required by the most delicate fibre, i.e. the lowest temperature. If, for example, an article consists of 60% polyester and 40% cotton, it should be ironed at the temperature indicated for polyester (1) and without steam. If you do not know what kind(s) of fabric(s) the article is made of, determine the appropriate temperature by ironing a piece of material that will not be visible when you wear or use the article. Start ironing at a relatively low temperature and gradually increase it until the desired result is achieved. · When steam-ironing woollen fabrics, shiny patches may occur. You can prevent this by using a dry pressing cloth or by turning the article inside out and ironing the reverse side. · Velvet and other fabrics that tend to acquire shiny patches should be ironed in one direction only (along with the nap) while applying very little pressure. Make sure you keep the appliance moving continuously while ironing. · It is not advisable to use steam when you are ironing coloured silk: this could cause stains. Steam-ironing Filling the tank before ironing - Make sure that the on/off switch (D) has been set to `off', that the appliance has cooled down and remove the plug from the wall socket. - Slowly unscrew cap (A) of the steam tank (fig. 2). · It is possible that there is a vacuum in the cold tank, which may cause a sound when you remove the cap. This is absolutely normal. - Pour max. 1 litre of water into the water tank. Note: Make sure the tank is full when you start ironing. · You can use tap water if it is not too hard (less than 10° DH). If the water in your area is very hard, you may use distilled water, which you can obtain from your local supermarket or chemist. · Do not put perfume, vinegar, starch or descaling agents in the water tank. Do not use water from a water softener either. - If some water remains behind in the filling opening, gently move the tank to and fro until the water is gone. - Firmly fasten the cap. Heating up - Put the plug in the wall socket and let the appliance heat up by setting the on/off switch (D) to `on' (fig. 3). · The steam tank as well as the soleplate are now being heated up. Heating of the soleplate takes approx. 2 minutes; heating of the steam tank takes approx. 8 minutes. · Types GC6005/6004 only: as soon as the steam tank is hot enough for steaming, pilot light (E) will go out. You may now start ironing. Steam-ironing · Steam-ironing is only possible at high ironing temperatures. - Keep the steam activator button (H) pressed in while you are steam-ironing (fig. 4). · Types GC6005/6004 only: during steam-ironing, pilot lights (E) and (G) will come on from time to time to indicate that the steam tank and the iron are being heated up to the right temperature and pressure respectively. When this happens, you can simply continue ironing. · When you have not used the steaming facility for some time, the steam still present in the supply hose will condense into water. The next time you steamiron, this may cause some spluttering in the appliance and a few droplets of water may escape from the soleplate. Tip: to prevent this, hold the iron over an old cloth and press the steam activator button (I) until the steam production has normalised before you start steamironing. Steaming in vertical position Hanging curtains and clothes (jackets, suits, coats) can be steam-ironed by holding the iron in vertical position (fig. 5). Steam control (Types GC6005/6004 only) · For moderate steam: set the steam control (F) to q (the small cloud). · For a lot of steam: set the steam control (F) to (the large cloud) and set the temperature control (I) to position 3 or MAX. q Fast refill Follow the instructions below: - First set the on/off switch (D) to `off'. - Press the steam activator button until you no longer hear any steam escaping from the appliance. - Keep the steam activator pressed in and slowly unscrew the cap of the steam tank by turning it anticlockwise. The steam tank is now depressurised - Remove the plug from the wall socket. - Fill the water tank as described in section `filling the tank before ironing' and let the appliance heat up again. 6 Note: it is essential that you always carry out these steps in the order mentioned above to avoid the unexpected release of hot steam! Ironing without steam - Put the iron on its heel or on the iron stand (C). · Make sure switch D has been set to `off'. - Set the desired ironing temperature by means to the temperature control (I) (fig. 6). - Put the plug in the wall socket, switch D to `on' and let the appliance heat up. - Wait until the pilot light (G) has gone out for the second time before you start ironing. · If you press the steam button by accident when you are ironing, some steam will escape. In case the tank is empty or not heated up yet, a clicking sound will come from the water tank. This phenomenon, caused by the opening of the steam valve, is harmless. · If you have been ironing at a high temperature and subsequently set the temperature control (I) to a lower setting, wait until the temperature pilot light (G) goes on again before you continue ironing. This will prevent damage to fabrics. Anti-calc funnel · Type GC6005 comes with an anti-calc funnel to prolong the life of the appliance. Use the anti-calc funnel when you fill the steam tank. When you have finished ironing - Switch the appliance off by setting the on/off switch (D) to `off' (fig. 7). - Release the pressure in the steam tank by pressing the steam activator button until you no longer hear any steam escaping from the appliance. - Then remove the plug from the wall socket. - Put the iron on its heel or on the iron stand (C) and allow it to cool down sufficiently before you move it or put it away. Cleaning - Remove the plug from the wall socket and allow the appliance to cool down sufficiently before you start cleaning it. Iron - You can clean the iron with a damp cloth. · Never immerse the iron in water nor rinse it under the tap. - Scale and other deposits can be wiped off the soleplate with a damp cloth. Steam tank Clean the steam tank after every 10 times of use: - Carefully remove the cap. - Rinse the steam tank only with 500 ml of fresh water. Pour out the water by holding the steam tank over the sink upside down. - Screw the cap firmly back onto the steam tank. 7 Troubleshooting guide Situation After you have switched the appliance on for the first time, some smoke comes out of the appliance. Droplets of water escape from the soleplate. Likely cause This is a normal phenomenon. Some parts of the iron have been greased lightly in the factory. The temperature control (I) has been set to a temperature that is too low for steam-ironing. The steam tank has been placed on an unstable and/or uneven surface. When you start steam-ironing the hose is cold. Steam condenses in the hose, causing droplets of water to escape from the soleplate. What to do Nothing. After a short while this phenomenon will cease. Select the required ironing temperature as indicated in these instructions and the table. Put the steam tank on a stable and even surface. This is a normal phenomenon. Hold the iron over an old cloth and press the steam activator button (H).The cloth will absorb the drops. After a few seconds the steam production will have normalised. Fill the water tank and put it on a stable, even surface. . Set the on/off switch (D) to `on'. Wait until the pilot light has gone out. To check if the iron is really producing steam, hold a (cold) mirror in front of the soleplate vents. The appliance does not produce steam. The pilot light * `water tank empty' is on (Types GC6005/6004 only). The steam tan ...
