With your new compact sandwich maker you can make all kinds of toasted sandwiches very easily. General description (fig. 1) A B C D Cooking plates Automatic locking system Cool-touch handgrips 'Power on' pilot light: this red light is on as long as the sandwich maker is connected to the mains. E 'Ready to cook' pilot light: this green light is on when the cooking plates are being heated up. When the green light goes out, the appliance is ready for use. F Cord storage facility Important Read these directions for use carefully before using the appliance and save them for future reference. This appliance is intended for household use only. Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of the appliance corresponds to the mains voltage in your home before you connect the appliance. Plug the appliance into an earthed wall socket. Position the appliance in such a way that: the mains cord does not hang over the edge of the table or worktop; it is out of the reach of children. Make sure that the mains cord does not come into contact with or too close to the hot surfaces of the appliance. Put the appliance on a stable and flat surface, away from curtains and other combustible materials. Always preheat the cooking plates before putting slices of bread between them. Unplug the appliance immediately after use. Never let the appliance operate unattended. Avoid touching the metal parts as they become very hot. Let the appliance cool down completely before cleaning or storing it. Never touch the cooking plates with sharp or abrasive items, as this will cause damage to the non-stick coating. This appliance is not a grill and is not intended for preparing other foods than sandwiches. Always clean the appliance after use. Never immerse the appliance in water. Prevent water from entering the appliance. If the mains cord of this appliance is damaged, it must always be replaced by Philips or a service centre authorised by Philips to avoid hazardous situations. Before first use 1 Remove any stickers and wipe the body of the sandwich maker with a damp cloth. 2 Open the sandwich maker (fig. 2). 3 Clean the cooking plates with a damp cloth or sponge (fig. 3). B The appliance may give off some smoke when you use it for the first time.This is normal. ENGLISH Using the appliance Making toasted sandwiches 1 Slightly grease the cooking plates with a little butter or oil. 7 2 Insert the mains plug into the wall socket.The red 'Power on' pilot light and the green 'Ready to cook' pilot light go on (fig. 4). B You can adjust the length of the cord by winding part of it round the cord storage facility. 3 Prepare the ingredients for the toasted sandwiches while the appliance is heating up. For each sandwich you need two slices of bread and a suitable filling. Read the chapter 'Recipes' for suggestions. B Slightly butter the sides of the bread that come into contact with the cooking plates to obtain an even, golden brown result. B The sandwich maker is ready for use as soon as the green 'Ready to cook' pilot light goes out. 4 Open the sandwich maker. 5 Put the sandwiches to be prepared on the lower cooking plate (fig. 5). You can also toast only one sandwich, if you wish. B To ensure optimal sealing, fillings should not be spread too close to the edges of the slices of bread. B 6 Close the sandwich maker (fig. 6). Lower the upper cooking plate carefully onto the bread until it locks automatically onto the lower plate. B Note:While cooking, the green 'Ready to cook' pilot light switches on and off as an indication that the heating elements are switched on and off to maintain the correct temperature. 7 Open the sandwich maker after 3-4 minutes to check whether the sandwiches are golden brown. B The cooking time required to obtain crispy brown sandwiches depends on the type of bread, the filling and your personal taste. 8 Remove the sandwiches (fig. 7). Use a wooden or plastic utensil (e.g. a spatula) to remove the toasted sandwich from the sandwich maker. Do not use metal, sharp or abrasive kitchen utensils. 9 If you wish to continue making sandwiches, wait until the green 'Ready to cook' pilot light goes out before putting new sandwiches in the sandwich maker. 10 Unplug the sandwich maker after use. Cleaning Never use abrasive pads to clean the cooking plates, as they will damage the non-stick coating. 1 Always unplug the sandwich maker before your start cleaning it. 2 Let the sandwich maker cool down properly in open position. 3 First remove excess oil from the plates with a piece of kitchen paper before cleaning. 4 Clean the cooking plates with a moist soft cloth or sponge (fig. 8). 5 Use a wooden or plastic spatula to remove sticky food residues (for example solidified cheese) from the cooking plates. 0 Do not use metal, sharp or abrasive utensils. 6 Clean the outside of the appliance with a moist cloth. 8 ENGLISH Storage 1 Wind the cord round the cord storage facility (fig. 9). 2 The appliance can be stored in vertical or horizontal position. Environment 1 Do not throw the appliance away with the normal household waste at the end of its life, but hand it in at an official collection point for recycling. By doing this you will help to preserve the environment (fig. 10). Recipes Toasted sandwiches B B B B B Ham, cheese & pineapple sandwich Ingredients: 4 slices of white bread 2 slices of cheese 2 slices of pineapple 2 thin slices of ham curry powder Preparation Preheat the sandwich maker. Put the cheese, the pineapple and the ham on two slices of bread. Sprinkle the ham with some curry powder and put the other two slices of bread on top. Toast the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes. Go to chapter 'Using the appliance' for further instructions. Tomato, cheese & anchovy sandwich Ingredients: 4 slices of white bread 1 or 2 tomatoes (cut into slices) 2 tbs of grated Parmesan cheese 6 anchovies paprika marjoram Preparation Preheat the sandwich maker. Put the slices of tomato, the anchovies and the grated cheese on two slices of bread. Sprinkle the filling with some paprika and marjoram and put the other two slices of bread on top. Toast the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes. Go to chapter 'Using the appliance' for further instructions.
