Versatile CD and DVD recording
7
Chapter 2: Getting started
Welcome to InstantDisc! The InstantDisc application is a vital component of the InstantCD+DVD suite. InstantDisc is a versatile CD and DVD recording program, which you can use to create your own CDs and DVDs quickly and easily. To make working with InstantDisc an intuitive and familiar experience from the outset, the interface has been made as similar as possible to that of Windows Explorer.
System requirements
Please make sure that your system complies with these minimum requirements
· Pentium III or AMD 500 MHz processor · 64 MByte RAM · CD-R/RW · Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000 or
Windows XP
· 200 MByte free hard disk space for the application · If you only have one CD / DVD drive, you will need
sufficient hard disk space to be able to copy from CD / DVD to the hard disk and back again to CD / DVD.
9
InstantDisc is usable on a system that meets the requirements above, but for optimal performance the following are recommended:
· Pentium 4 or AMD 1.2 GHz processor (or higher) · 128 MByte RAM · DVD-R/RW · Windows XP · At least one CD/DVD reader and one CD/DVD
burner for "on the fly" copying

Chapter 3: Working with InstantDisc
The topics in this section are designed to familiarize you with the InstantDisc user interface, and the main operations supported by the program.
THE INSTANTDISC MAIN WINDOW
For experienced users, the main window is the place to start for creating new disks, reading CDs and DVDs, creating labels, editing music and much more. The window is normally divided into two main areas:
· The upper part is the Projects area; it contains
information about your disc creation projects and the recording hardware installed in the computer. · The lower part is the Source Files area. It displays the file system of the computer and can be switched on or off from the View menu. The left part of both area contains a "tree view", similar to the Folders panel of Windows Explorer. You can control the amount of depth displayed in the tree view by opening and closing ("expanding" and "collapsing") parts of the "tree". Entries that can be expanded are indicated by a symbol to the left of the entry. Click the symbol to expand the entry.
Chapter 3: Working with InstantDisc

The InstantDisc main window Drives and folders can be expanded in the file view in the right-hand panels of the display in the same manner as in Windows Explorer. The Projects area is used to obtain access to your stored projects, past and present.. Current projects are located in the "Disc projects" folder, while past projects are stored under "History".
Exploring the projects area
This area lists your current disc projects, as well as projects you have created in the past. The projects are listed under "My computer" in folders named "Disc projects" and "History".
12
InstantCD/DVD
Data, audio and mixed-mode disc projects are all listed, each type with its own icon. The illustration above shows a data project open in the "History" folder. Tracks: The different kinds of tracks you can write to a disc are again distinguished by their own icons. The single track shown in the illustration above is of the data type. You will encounter other types, including audio and image.
You can expand a data track to show the folder structure to be created on that track on the output disc. When an audio track is selected in the tree view, the usual file view in the right-hand panel is replaced by a special graphic view of the track:
Chapter 3: Working with InstantDisc
13
Hardware The projects area also lists the optical disc drives on your system, and the contents of the discs in those drives. Drives: Shows the drives installed in the machine, including the virtual drive created by the InstantDrive software. Writable devices are shown with a different icon than readers. Tracks: If there is a disc in a drive, the drive entry can be expanded to show the tracks on the disc. CDs may contain either or both of data and audio tracks, whereas DVDs contain only data tracks. Drag-and-drop Most actions in InstantDisc can be carried out using drag-and-drop. The most common actions are as follows:
· From audio or data tracks to the file system: The
·
· ·

audio tracks are read out as WAV files and stored in the target folder. From audio or data tracks to the disc project group: A new disc project is created. The dropped tracks are added to the disc project. From audio or data tracks to an existing disc project: The dropped tracks are added to the disc project. From files to the disc project group: A new disc project is created. The dropped files and folders are added to the disc project. From files to an existing disc project: The dropped files and folders are added to the first data track of the disc project. A data track is created if none already exists.

· From files to a data track of an existing disc project:
The dropped files and folders are added to the data track of the disc project. · From files or folders to a folder of a data track of an existing disc project: The dropped files and folders are added to the appropriate folder of the data track of the disc project. · From a disc project to a CD or DVD recorder: This action starts the write dialog for the chosen project and selects the appropriate recorder. Many actions in the main form can be carried out using the right-button "context" menus associated with the elements in the tree view. Simply click with the right mouse button on the appropriate element and select the required action.
Some very important actions can also be carried out using the icons at the top edge of the window. Write If the disc project has been selected, the write dialogue box can be opened using this icon in order to write the project. InstantDisc supports several parallel write procedures for this purpose. Disc projects that are currently being written or recorders that have already been used are shown "grayed out".
Chapter 3: Working with InstantDisc 15
Rip disc With this function, you can read audio CDs and save them as WAV, WMA. or MP3 (full version only).
The tracks on the CD in the selected drive are shown in the left part of the window. Each track can be "sampled" by means of the playback controls below it. You can use the slide control for rapid navigation within the song.
To rip the tracks:
1.
Check the box next to the tracks that you want to read.
16
InstantCD/DVD
2.
Select a file format in the dropdown list in the bottom left-hand corner of the window.
3.
Click the rip button in the center of the window. The tracks will now be read and displayed on the right-hand side as they are ripped. The destination folder can be changed by means of the box above the destination list. The default destination is specified in the Settings window.
The tracks that have been read out can now be sampled with the playback controls. The Delete button can be used to delete the ripped tracks if desired. Get titles When you insert a CD, the tracks may be displayed with synthetic names like "Track 1" rather than the actual names of the songs. This happens when the track names are not stored on the CD; or the disc device does not have the capability of reading the names; and InstantDisc could not access the Internet directory service used for looking up the CD's track list. Use the Get titles button after your Internet connection is made. InstantDisc tries to obtain the names for the tracks on the CD.

CREATING A DATA DISC
Begin a new data disc using either the InstantCD/DVD starter application or the controls in the main window as described above. If you have requested the aid of the InstantDisc Assistant, it will now appear.
Creating a data disc with the Assistant
Follow the Assistant's instructions. Allocate a name to the disc, change to the required folder, and add the files you want using the Add or Add all buttons.
In the final step, you will choose whether to proceed with burning the disc immediately (Write disc), or to return to the main InstantDisc window for further preparation (Close this wizard).
Chapter 4: Creating CDs and DVDs
21
Creating a data disc without the Assistant
If you are not using the Assistant, InstantDisc opens the Properties dialog for the project:
In principle, it is not necessary to make any entries in the Properties dialog. However, it is recommended that you should at least name the disc (or accept the default name). The use you make of the other settings will depend on your particular requirements for the disc. After exiting the Properties dialog with the OK button you will be transferred to the InstantDisc main window.
22
InstantCD/DVD
Open the required folder in the Source files box and simply drag the selected data into the target box as described under "The InstantDisc Main Window" (page 11).
The progress bar shows you how much space is left on the disc. When the disc capacity is exhausted, the bar turns from green to red. Now click on the Write button and the data disc will be created.
CREATING AN AUDIO CD
Begin a new audio CD using either the InstantCD/DVD starter application or the controls in the main window as described at the beginning of this chapter. If you have requested the aid of the InstantDisc Assistant, it will now appear.
Creating an audio CD with the Assistant
The Assistant guides you through the process of creating an audio CD in a series of simple steps. In the first step, you choose the source for the audio tracks you want to create:
· Audio files · An existing CD · Direct audio input (turntable, microphone, etc.)
Chapter 4: Creating CDs and DVDs
23
Each of these types of source is described below. No matter which you choose, after you have added tracks from that source to the project, the Assistant offers three choices of what to do next:
· To proceed with burning the disc immediately (Write
disc); · To add further audio tracks, whether from files, CDs, or direct input (Add additional audio tracks); or, · To continue working, but without the Assistant's help, by switching to the main InstantDisc window (Close this wizard). Audio files Under this option, the next step is to select the files in wav or mp3 format that you want to write using the Add button. The green progress bar will show you how much space is still available on the CD. If you have added multiple files, you can change the order of the files using the Move up and Move down buttons.
You can audit files by marking them and clicking the Play button:
24
InstantCD/DVD
Existing CD Activate this option to import songs from an existing audio CD. Insert the source CD: its contents will be listed on the Add audio tracks page of the Assistant. The process of adding tracks is described under "Rip disc" on page 16. Direct audio This option lets you create tracks by recording audio directly from a device connected to the sound card. For example, you might connect a turntable to your sound card in order to copy vinyl records onto CD, or use a microphone to record yourself singing or playing a musical instrument.
Test that InstantDisc is receiving the intended signal by pressing the Test button, which takes you through the audio capture process without actually creating the audio file. If everything is working you will see a response on the level meters when you play a record on the turntable or sing into your microphone:
Following a successful test, cue your input and click the Record button. You will be asked to enter a filename, and then recording will begin, ending when you click the Stop button.
Chapter 4: Creating CDs and DVDs 25
Creating a CD without the Assistant
If you are not using the Assistant, InstantDisc opens the Properties dialog for the project. The CD-Text tab on this dialog lets you enter information about the disc.
When you close the Properties dialog, you will continue working in the InstantDisc main window.
In the Source files folder browser, locate the folder containing the audio data that you want to burn onto the CD, and drag files into the right-hand panel of the Projects area. You can also select files for the CD by selecting the New track command in the audio CD project's context
26 InstantCD/DVD
menu. This invokes the Assistant to help you with creating one or more tracks. The amount of free space remaining on the CD is shown by the progress bar at the bottom of the main window. See "Creating a data disc without the Assistant page" on page 22 for details. You can easily change the order of the titles with the help of the Move up and Move down buttons on the toolbar at the top of the main window.
CREATING AN MP3 DISC
Begin a new MP3 disc using either the InstantCD/DVD starter application or the controls in the main window as described at the beginning of this chapter. If you have requested the aid of the InstantDisc Assistant, it will now appear.
Creating an MP3 disc with the Assistant
The Assistant guides you through the process of creating an MP3 disc in a series of simple steps. In the first step, you choose the source for the tracks you want to create:
· Audio files · An existing CD
Both sources are described under "Creating an audio CD with the Assistant" on page 23. The only difference with an MP3 project is that the option of using direct input to create an audio track is not available. The audio data will be automatically written in mp3 format when your disc is created.
Chapter 4: Creating CDs and DVDs 27
After you have added tracks from the chosen source to the project, the Assistant offers three choices of what to do next:
· To proceed with burning the disc immediately (Write
disc); · To add further audio tracks, whether from files, CDs, or direct input (Add additional audio tracks); or, · To continue working, but without the Assistant's help, by switching to the main InstantDisc window (Close this wizard).
Creating an MP3 disc without the Assistant
If you are not using the Assistant, the process of creating an MP3 disc is just the same as that for an ordinary data disc. The only difference is that the files you select will be either mp3 files or audio files (wav or wma). The audio files will be converted to mp3 format when your disc is created.
CREATING A PHOTO AND VIDEO DISC
Begin a new Video CD or DVD of your digital pictures and videos using either the InstantCD/DVD starter application or the controls in the main window as described at the beginning of this chapter. The creation of your photo and video disc is carried out in the Pinnacle Expression application. Expression is covered in its own section of this manual.
28

CREATING DISCS IN OTHER FORMATS
If you use the Advanced projects option on the New Disc Project dialog (click the New project button in the main window), InstantDisc offers a number of less frequently used formats in addition to the usual ones. The advanced options probably won't be needed by most users, but provided extra power for those who may require it.
