Av i a t i o n Headset
Easy to Wear, Easy to Use
Plantronics offers two basic styles of aviation headsets: The MS50, which attaches to a headband or eyeglasses; and the StarSet®, which rests behind the ear. All Plantronics headsets offer hands-free, in-flight convenience, lightweight comfort during extended wear, and the dependability that has made us part of every manned-space program from Project Mercury to the Space Shuttle. Miniaturized solid-state circuitry provides reliable, quality communication. Plantronics MS50 and StarSet aviation headsets meet FAA requirement TSO C57 and C58. To get the maximum benefit from your new headset and accessories, read this user's guide carefully.

Be certain the tube and eartip are aligned as shown in the photos.
Selecting the Proper-Sized Eartip
The eartip providing maximum comfort and clarity will be large enough to permit only the bulb portion to fit snugly into the ear opening. Make the selection before attaching the eartip to the capsule.
Performance Tip
Never use an eartip that is too small or too large. Clean the eartip regularly. Do not kink the flexible eartip tube. See also the section on Care and Maintenance. Caution: If you have a history of ear infections or allergies to plastics, you should exercise care in using the eartip.

Attaching Your Headset to Your Glasses
MS50
Your MS50 headband is fully adjustable. The pivoting arm on which the capsule is mounted allows you to wear the capsule on the left or right side with the headband over the top of or behind your head, as illustrated. Make certain the capsule is on the outside of the pivoting arm. Place the eartip in the opening of the ear canal.
Performance Tip
Begin by extending the voice tube approximately one inch. Holding the capsule with your thumb and forefinger, as shown, place the headset against your head, above and slightly forward of your ear. Now slide the capsule downward, rotating it backward until positioned as shown. Finally, place the eartip in the opening of the ear canal.
Performance Tip
Place the voice tube near the corner of the mouth just below, but not directly in front of, your lips, as shown. Move the headband pivot bar up and down to position the tube vertically, and rotate the tube itself for horizontal positioning. If necessary, you can move the capsule laterally on the pivot arm.
StarSet ®
The spring clip on either side of the capsule allows you to snap your headset onto your glasses. If your glasses have wire temples, you may wish to order an eyeglass bow adapter to thicken the mounting base for the capsule and ensure a comfortable fit, as shown. The bow adapter is not included with the MS50 aviation headset (order PN 10822-00).
When adjusting the capsule, handle it carefully; tugging on the voice tube or cable may damage the headset.
StarSet voice tubes rotate, pivot, and telescope. Holding the headset securely against your head with one hand, grasp the bend in the voice tube with the othe. Pull out, push in, or rotate the voice tube to a position near the corner of the mouth, just below, but not in front of, your lips.
For stability, it is essential that the capsule be properly hooked over the top portion of the ear.

If you wear glasses, you may attach the headset to your eyeglass frames. For thicker plastic frames, mount the eyeglass clip on the desired temple, as shown. For thin or wire frames, pull back the tab on top of the clip, as illustrated, and slide the clip onto the desired temple, releasing the tab when the clip is in position. Insert the headset in the clip as shown and pivot the capsule away from the frames. After putting your glasses on, pivot the capsule toward your head and insert the eartip. For a tight fit on fine frames, place the glasses bow adapter included with your aviation StarSet on the desired temple and mount the eyeglass clip over the adapter.

Adjusting the Clothing Clip
Attach the clothing clip to a part of your clothing at about chest level. Press the ends of the cable clamp to allow enough slack-- approximate six inches (15cm) --between your headset and the clothing clip. Try moving your head from side to side to ensure that you have allowed sufficient cable slack between the headset and the clothing clip.
