Please read this manual carefully prior to using the RipDrive. 1. DO NOT alter the RipDrive in any way. We appreciate your patronage. You will now enjoy the advantage of having a mass storage device that solves the capacity limitation problems of most existing MP3 players. The RipDrive's Playback feature supports MP3 and WMA formats so you can handle various music files with ease. In addition, the Setup mode provides various menus that you can configure to suit your personal preferences. The RipDrive can be connected to your PC via a USB cable. Once connected to your PC, the unit is automatically recognized by your PC as a mass storage device (drive letter). In addition, you can continue to enjoy the benefits of improved product performance through firmware upgrades. You can obtain information about our company, PoGo! Product Overview The RipDrive is a portable HDD Type MP3 Player that is compatible with your PC. It features a portable 20GB hard disk and a 160 x 105 full-graphic LCD screen. This product supports various languages, making it convenient to use anywhere you go. This section describes the main features of the product as well as the names and functions of the components. Read through this information carefully so you'll be able to use the product easily and effectively. The topics in this section: Product Features Name of Each Part Functional Description of Each Part 3 Product Features Mass Storage RipDrive uses mass storage technology that exceeds the capacity of most existing MP3 players and permits you to use it as a removable drive. MP3 and WMA Playback You can play MPEG1-Layer3 (MP3) and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. Extended Use with Each Charge You can enjoy up to 10 hours of music playback with just one battery charge. Direct MP3 Encoding without a PC You can encode music from just about any audio source to MP3 by connecting the line-in cable of the RipDrive to an earphone jack of any external device. No PC is required! FM Tuner You can listen to FM radio by using the Auto Scan or Preset function. Search Function RipDrive's user-friendly search feature enables you to quickly find the files you want. You can search for a music files easily by using the Search Function. Text View You can view text files stored in the RipDrive anytime and anywhere. 4 Name of Each Part The following illustration indicates the names and locations of each part of the unit. Headphone jack LCD screen USB port Connects headphones to the RipDrive. Shows information about the operational status of the unit. Enables data exchange with your PC. Connect the USB cable using this port. Jog key When pushed up or down: - Selects a file or folder. When pressed: - Opens the selected file. - Opens the selected folder. Hold switch Locks all buttons to prevent accidental use. Slide the switch up to activate the Hold function and slide it down to deactivate it. PLAY/PAUSE When selecting a file, press this button to start playback. If playback has already started, pressing the button pauses playback. It also resumes a paused recording and functions as the power switch. STOP When pressed lightly: - Stops playback and enters Browser mode. - Takes you back to a higher-level folder when in a subfolder When held down: Multi buttons - The unit will automatically power off when this button is held down for about 3 seconds. - The unit will force a power off when this button is held down longer than 10 seconds. REW - Used to select the previous file from the folder list. - During playback, hold down this button to rewind the current song, or press lightly to play the previous song. FF - Used to select the next file from the folder list. - During playback, hold it down to fast-forward the current song, or press lightly to play the next song. 6 MENU button - Hold it down to switch modes, or briefly to return to Browser mode. - If Tree View and Search View on the Display section are set to "Enable," lightly press the MENU button and it will toggle between Tree View and Search View. Volume Down button Volume Up button REC button/A · B Turns the volume down on this unit. Turns the volume up on this unit. FM/Line-In/Voice Encoding function/AB Repeat function button. Also pauses a recording. 7 3. Preparation The RipDrive uses an AC adapter to charge the battery. The battery has to be charged PRIOR to using the RipDrive for the first time after purchasing. Earphones are included with the RipDrive. Use the earphones to listen to music and voice recording files. An optional remote control is available for greater convenience. Visit our website at www.pogoproducts.com for more details. This RipDrive supports multiple OS platforms, including Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Mac OS 9.1.x+, and OSX v10.1.2+. You can install a USB driver on your PC according to the OS you are using, then connect the RipDrive to your PC. Plug the AC adapter/charger into an AC outlet. Plug the AC adapter/charger's barrel plug into the DC 3V jack on the left side of the RipDrive. Power on the unit (Hold Play/Pause button down) When charging the battery (after plugging the AC adapter/charger's barrel plug into the charger jack) you must press the Play/Pause button. If the AC adapter/charger connection is correct, the following graphic below will appear on the LCD screen. During playback, the charging icon ( in the top left hand corner. Note: In order to use the AC adaptor for playback 1.Power on the unit first (Hold Play/Pause button down) 2.Plug the AC adapter/charger's barrel plug into the DC 3V jack on the left side of the RipDrive. ) should appear 9 Battery Remaining Indicator The Battery Remaining Indicator displays the amount of power remaining based on four symbols: When the battery level is above 70% Full When the battery level is above 40% Middle When the battery level is above 10% Low When the battery level is below 10% (the indicator flashes at Blank one-second intervals) 10 Connecting Earphones/Line-in Cable You must use earphones to listen to music or voice recordings. There are no external speakers. You can use the line-in cable to connect an external audio source to the line-jack of the RipDrive for MP3 encoding. The following illustration illustrates the earphones and line-in connections: Earphones Connection 1. Plug the earphones into the headphone jack on the top right side of the RipDrive. Earphone Connection Line-in Connection Make sure the earphones are completely inserted in the jack. 2. Play a music file to check for a proper connection. Line-in Connection 1. 2. Plug one end of the line-in cable into the line out or earphone jack of an external audio device. Plug the other end into the line-in jack on the top left side of the RipDrive. 11 Connecting to Your PC Use the included USB cable to connect the RipDrive to your PC as a mass storage device to easily use its various features. You can upload or download files to and from your PC. The RipDrive is USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 compliant and reaches a maximum speed of 480Mbps for data transfer (WARNING: You should not upload MP3 or WMA files that infringe on copyright laws.) 1. 2. Connect one end of the USB cable (as shown below) to the USB port on the back of your PC. Turn on the power of the RipDrive and connect the other end of the cable (as shown) to the USB port of the RipDrive. If you connect the USB cable during the playback of a file, an error may occur. Be sure to connect the USB cable when the RipDrive is not playing. The RipDrive turns off automatically when you disconnect the USB cable. Note: Please refer to "Removing the Device" (page 18) when removing the USB cable. 12 Installing the USB Driver If you are running Windows ME, 2000, or XP on your PC, the installation will be performed automatically when you connect the RipDrive to your PC. However, on a PC running Windows 98, you WILL need to manually install the required USB driver. Automatic Installation 1. 2. 3. 4. Connect one end of the USB cable to your PC. Turn on the power on the RipDrive. Connect the other end of the cable to the USB port of the RipDrive. Your PC will automatically recognize the RipDrive and the required USB driver is installed automatically. Note: If the installation does not start automatically, restart your PC and repeat the procedure above. Manual Installation If your PC is running Windows 98, you will need to manually install a USB driver. Insert the supplied CDROM into the CD-ROM drive of your PC. 1. Connect the RipDrive to your PC and power it on. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box will appear. 2. Follow the on-screen instructions pictured below and on the next few pages. "Specify A Location" and browse, scrolling down to the HD-500_driver_v_5.16 file on the CDROM. 3. Click on the driver name to highlight it. Click "Next." The location and HD-500 driver you've selected will appear in the next dialog box. 4. 5. Click "Next," which will install the driver. When completed, click "Finish." 13 14 15 16 17 Checking the Installation Follow this procedure to determine if the required USB driver is installed properly. Right-click on My Computer and click Properties. On Windows 2000 and XP, select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button. On Windows 98, select the Device Manager tab. The Device Manager dialog box will open. If the required USB driver is installed correctly, it will be indicated as shown below: A new icon ( ) will also appear in the System Tray. 18 Removing the RipDrive Double-click on in the System Tray to bring up the following window: Click "Stop" and when the "Safe to Remove Hardware" dialog box appears, click "OK." Be sure to remove the USB cable only after you have cleared the dialog box by clicking "OK". 1. When performing a Save or Delete operation, DO NOT remove the USB cable before such an operation is completed because you will lose data. Also, even if a task appears to be complete, there might be certain operations still going on internally. Remove the USB cable only after you have confirmed the completion of such tasks. 2. Both uploading and downloading to/from this product consume a vast amount of power. Discharging 19 batteries may cause data damage. We recommend connecting the charger to the RipDrive during uploading or downloading. 20 4. Basic Operations The RipDrive has many features that enable you to listen to various music files in a WMA/MP3 format. In addition, you can also listen to FM broadcasts using its built in tuner. The large LCD screen lets you easily monitor and adjust functions according to your needs. The basic operations of the RipDrive are detailed in this section. The topics in this section: Turning Power on Turning Power off Initial Screen LCD Screen Indicators Major Modes 21 Turning Power on Press the Play/Pause button. Power turns on and the initial screen appears on the LCD. The RipDrive now enters Browser mode and the root folder appears on the LCD. Note: When using the RipDrive for the first time, there are no subfolders under the root folder. Connect the RipDrive to your PC and create new folders using your PC. Turning Power off Hold the Stop button for 2-3 seconds. The following message will appear on the LCD screen and the power turns off. 22 Initial Screen The following initial screen appears when the RipDrive is powered on: After the initial screen disappears, the RipDrive will be in Browser mode. If the AUTOPLAY function in the MUSIC-OPTION of the SET mode is set to "ON", the RipDrive will remember the last mode it was in before powering off. At this time, the folders in the RipDrive are displayed. When using the RipDrive for the first time, there are no subfolders under the root folder. You can connect the RipDrive to your PC to create new folders. A few folders are provided by default. Each of these folders is used for a different purpose: Type USER AREA PLAYLIST ENCODE VOICE RECORD Root User-created folder. Description Folder in which Winamp (.m3u) and bookmark files (.bmk) is stored. Folder in which files encoded using the line-in jack is stored. Folder in which voice files recorded using the internal microphone is stored. TEXT FILE SYSTEM (Hidden) Folder for text files (.txt). Folder for system files. FIRMWARE Folder for firmware updates (HD500xxxx.BIN). 23 LCD Screen Indicators Various icons are used to indicate the settings and status of the RipDrive. The following illustration and table describes the meaning of each icon: Icon Description Battery remaining indicator: Indicates the amount of power remaining in the battery. ( ). Lock indicator (indicates that the Hold function is activated) All Repeat mode indicator (All, Play mode indicator ( ID3 AB 0003/0200 D0003/F0010 ID3 Tag ON/OFF indicator A-B Repeat indicator Current song number/total number of songs Total number of subfolders and the current folder/total number of files in the current folder File format of the current file The icons representing the various file formats are: (MP3: , WMA: , M3U: , BMK: , Text: ) , , DIR, SDIR) , RND, INT) 24 All for You EQ 44.1 KHz 128Kbps Name of the current file EQ indicator (Normal, Rock, Classic, Jazz, Ultra Bass or User) ( , , , , , ) Sampling frequency/Bit rate indicator Action icon indicator ( , , , , ) Volume indicator (different depending on volume level) ( XX:YY:ZZ , , , , , , ) Elapsed time indicator (e.g. 01:22:15) Previous song indicator Next song indicator 25 Major Modes This RipDrive has seven (7) major modes. Press and hold the MENU button and then use the Jog key (up or down) to highlight the desired mode. Next use the jog key (push in) to enter. (These modes can be viewed while listening to a music file without affecting the music playing.) Mode Description This mode is used for playing MP3 or WMA files. It shows the music files stored on the RipDrive. Browser This mode is used to listen to radio. You can tune in to any FM station you want in your area. Tuner This is where the line-in, FM and voice recordings are stored. Line-in files are located in the ENCODE folder and voice recordings are stored in the VOICE RECORD folder. Just select the desired folder and file you want to listen to. Encoding This mode displays albums containing M3U and BMK files and allows you to play them. PlayList 26 This mode displays the folder containing text files and allows you to read the content of a text (.txt) file. Text This mode allows you to make configuration changes to the RipDrive. Setup Back to Browser mode. Exit 27 1. Browser Mode In this mode, you can play a selected music file. Regardless of what mode the RipDrive is in, press and hold the MENU button next use the Jog key and highlight "Browser" now push the jog key in and you will enter browser mode. A list of all the music file folders appears in Browser Mode. Again, there are NO folders when you are using the RipDrive for the first time. Create new folders by connecting the RipDrive to your PC. Create new folders in the same way you would normally create them on your PC (i.e., right-click on a blank area of your desktop, then Click "New" and Click "Folder") Playback Use the Forward button, Rewind button or Jog key to select the folder you want and then press the Play/Pause button. A list of MP3 files contained in the folder appears. Use the Forward button, Rewind button or Jog key to select the desired file and then press Play/Pause. Select The selected file is played and various icons will appear on the LCD screen to indicate the 28 operational status of the RipDrive. The current file, previous file, and next file are also displayed. Note: To stop playback and move to an upper-level folder, press the Stop button. Pause During playback, lightly press the Play/Pause button to pause playback. Lightly press the Play/Pause button again to resume playback. Fast Forward During playback, press and hold the Forward button to fast-forward through the current song. Release the button to resume playback. During playback or when in pause, lightly press the Forward button to play the next song. Each time the button is pressed, the next song is played. Rewind During playback, press and hold the Rewind button to rewind through the current song. Release the button to resume playback. During playback or when in pause, lightly press the Rewind button to play the previous song. Each time the button is pressed, the previous song is played. 29 Note: If you lightly press the Rewind button during the first 5 seconds of playback, the previous song is played. After 5 seconds of playback, the beginning of the current song is played. To get back to the previous song after 5 seconds, lightly press the Rewind button twice. Viewing the Music Popup Menu during Playback Press and hold the Jog key during the playback of a file to display the MUSIC pop-up menu. During the playback of a file, press and hold the Jog key to display the MUSIC popup menu window in the center of the screen. This will not affect the music playing at the time. MUSIC POPUP User EQ EQ Play Mode Repeat Time Display Book Mark Exit 1. 2. 3. Each menu has sub-menus. You can use the pop-up menu to configure settings related to music. Use the Forward button, Rewind button or Jog key to navigate through the menus and press the Play/Pause button or Jog key to select a menu. To make the pop-up menu window disappear, lightly press the MENU button or select Exit from the pop-up menu screen and press the Jog key. 4. Note: Refer to Section 5 for more information on how to set the different modes of the MUSIC pop-up menu. 30 Adjusting the Volume Use the Volume buttons to adjust the volume level. Pressing the Volume Down (-) button will decrease the volume level and pressing the Volume Up (+) button will increase the volume level. The volume level can be adjusted between 0 and 20. Pressing and holding either button will increase or decrease the volume level faster. Different icons will appear depending on the volume level. , , , , , , , , 31 2. Tuner Mode This mode allows you to listen to radio stations in your local area. Press and hold the MENU button and select "Tuner." You can use the Preset feature to store the frequencies of your favorite radio stations. You can store up to 20 frequencies. Listening to the Radio: Tuning in to a Preset Station 1. 2. Switch to Tuner mode. Push the Jog key up or down to select a Preset station number. Tuning in to a Desired Station 1. In Tuner mode, lightly press the Forward or Rewind button to tune it to a higher frequency or lower frequency, respectively. 2. For automatic tuning, use the Auto Scan function. Press and hold the Forward or Rewind button to start an Auto Scan. 3. In order to listen to a preset frequency, press the Jog button. Recording a desired FM broadcast 1. 2. 3. Switch to Tuner mode. Push the Rec button. To pause a recording press Rec. To resume a recording (from pause) press the Play/Pause button. 32 Presetting Stations 1. 2. In Tuner mode, use the Forward or Rewind button to find the desired station. Press and hold the Jog key and the FM TUNER POPUP menu window will appear: FM TUNER POPUP Enc Bitrate Tuner Mode Freq. Save Exit 3. 4. Select Freq. Save and press the Play/Pause button or Jog key. Select the desired preset number from the available preset numbers (max 20) and then press the Play/Pause button or Jog key to save it to memory. Viewing the Popup Menu During Playback In Tuner mode, press and hold the Jog key to display the FM TUNER POPUP menu window. Refer to Section 5 for more information on setting the pop-up menu. 33 3. Encoding Mode Encoding This mode allows you to receive audio signals from an external audio device through the line-in jack and encode them directly into an MP3 format. 1. In Browser mode, connect one end of the line-in cable to the earphone jack or line out of your audio player. Connect the other end to the line-in jack on the RipDrive. While playing the track you want to convert to an MP3 file, press the Rec button. The recording and remaining times will appear on the LCD screen. If the Rec button is pressed again, recording will pause. When Encoding is finished, press the Stop button to put the RipDrive in Wait. Press the Stop button again to save the encoded file in the ENCODE folder. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The file will now show in the contents of that folder. Press the Play/Pause button to play the file. Voice Recording This feature enables you to record voice memos. Use the built-in microphone to record a voice memo. The procedure for recording a voice memo is the same as that of encoding to an MP3 format, except for the line-in connection. In Browser mode, when the RipDrive is not playing, press and hold the Rec button to start a recording. 2. To stop recording, press the Stop button. The RipDrive will now show Wait on its LCD screen. Press the Stop button again to save the file to the VOICE RECORD folder. 3. 4. The file will now show the contents of that folder. Press the Play/Pause button to play the file. 1. Note: To pause a recording press Rec. To resume a recording (from pause) press the Play/Pause button. 34 4. PlayList Mode A folder containing the albums of M3U and BMK files will appear in this screen. You can store MP3 or WMA files in an album for BMK files. The RipDrive provides up to 10 BMK albums by default. Create a Playlist first. During the playback of a song, press and hold the Jog key to display the MUSIC pop-up menu window in the center of the screen. 2. Select Book Mark by pressing Play/Pause and select the BMK album in which you would like to place the song by pressing Play/Pause again. Do this for all the songs you want to place in a bookmark (BMK) album. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. To view and play your BMK album, Press and hold the MENU button. Select PlayList mode and press the Play/Pause button. The PlayList folder appears together with the albums contained in it. Select the desired album and press the Play/Pause button to list all the files contained in the album. Press and hold the Jog key to display the PlayList pop-up menu. Delete OK Cancel Exit 1. 8. You can erase files you don't want anymore by selecting "OK" and pressing the Play/Pause button. The erased files are not actually deleted; they are only removed from the album. Note: BMK and M3U albums folders cannot be erased. 35 5. Text Mode You can view the contents of a text (.txt) file using the RipDrive. 1. 2. 3. Press and hold the MENU button. Select TEXT and press the Play/Pause button. The TEXT folder appears together with a list of all the stored text (.txt) files. 4. Select the desired text (.txt) file and press the Play/Pause button to display it. If there is too much information to be displayed on the screen, a scroll bar will appear. Setup Mode This mode is used to configure the RipDrive. The setup mode consists of five (5) tabs and each tab provides options to configure the RipDrive. 1. 2. 3. Press and hold the MENU button. Select Setup and press the Play/Pause button. The Setup mode tabs and options will be displayed: 4. Use the Forward/Rewind button or the Jog key to select the desired tab. The Tab menus in this mode are: , 5. , Use the Forward/Rewind button to find the preferred tab and press the Play/Pause to select it. Use the Forward/Rewind button to select the desired setting and press the Play/Pause button again to change those settings. You can change the settings of each menu. When your changes are complete, select Exit or press the Stop button. To exit Setup mode, select Exit, or press the Stop button again. 6. 37 Tree View In the Display menu (in Setup mode), set Tree View to "Enable" to see a tree view of the directories in the root. Use the Forward/Rewind button or push the Jog key up or down (when browsing files) to navigate through the menu items. When enabling Search view in the Display menu (in Setup mode), press the MENU button two times (when browsing files) to search songs. Press the MENU button to switch back to Tree View. Refer to Section 5 for information on setting the pop-up menu. Search View In the Display menu (in Setup mode), set Search View to "Enable" to use the search function. You can now enter up to three (3) characters to search for a desired file. (Refer to previous section for more info.) 38 Push the Jog key up or down to set the first character of the search. Use Forward/ Rewind to input a second character and move the Jog key up or down to set the second character. Do the same thing to set the third character and press the Play/Pause button to find the song. If you make a mistake, press the Stop button to position the cursor on the last character. When you found the correct song, press the Play/Pause button to play it. 39 7. Exit Mode This mode allows you to exit Setup mode. Once you have exited, the screen switches back to Browser mode. 40 5. Advanced Operations This RipDrive offers various options like Repeat, Play Mode Control, EL Mode Control, EQ settings for different types of music and an A-B Repeat function. File management can be accomplished from the RipDrive or from your PC, which enhances accessibility and convenience. You can use the USB cable to connect the RipDrive to your PC and use the RipDrive as an external hard disk drive. Customize your RipDrive according to your personal creative and organizational tastes using the options described in this section.
