ProDaylight manual The ProDaylight lamp head is designed to be used with a 1200W "hot restrike" bulb, for instance the MSR 1200 HR manufactured by Philips or the HMI 1200 SE manufactured by Osram. When inserting the bulb, please check that the small bubble on the inner quartz tube is pointing upwards and when attaching the lamp head onto the stand check that the lamp head is turned the right way up. The light output may otherwise be unstable. The HMI lamp bulb must always be inserted all the way down into the socket. Glass covers An uncoated, frosted, outer glass cover is included in standard delivery of the lamp head. Three other glass covers are available; one clear, one frosted which lowers the colour temperature by 300° and one frosted special UV-safe glass cover. Accessories The ProDaylight lamp head has the same diameter as Profotos flash lamp heads and can therefore be used with Profotos reflector accessories. The following accessories however cannot be used with the ProDaylight due to the excessive heat emitted. Using light banks When using light banks, such as the Pro/Chimera bouncer, it is most important for the air to circulate freely. Light banks with air vents on the side are preferable. If air vents are lacking, leave the fastenings as open as possible around the base of the lamp head. If the bouncer is pointing downwards the fastenings must be secured tightly around the lamp head and side openings must be present and left open to let the hot air escape. The hot air will otherwise be drawn down and back into the lamp head causing it to overheat. Alternatively, attach ProFunnels (10.46.14) to lead out the hot air. UV-radiation The lamp head emits UV-radiation when fitted with most HMI/MSR bulbs. Therefore, do not use the lamp head when lighting people, animals or UV-sensitive material unless Profoto's special UV-safe glass cover (order no. 28.20.10) is mounted. If the lamp head is used in Profoto's Fresnel Spotlight (order no. 10.07.06) it is also UV-safe. The lamp's specified life span The maximum burning time recommended by the lamp manufacturer (normally approx. 800 hour) should not be exceeded. Prolonged use will change the colour temperature and increase the risk of a lamp exploding. Ballasts The ProDaylight lamp head can be powered by two types of ballasts. Profoto's Magnetic Ballast which is available for various voltage conditions and Profoto's Electronic Ballast which has automatic voltage selection for all types of voltage. The Magnetic Ballast When used for still photography, the shutter speed should not be set to more than 1/90 sec. to eliminate the risk of underexposed pictures. The light output cannot be regulated with the Magnetic Ballast. The Electronic Ballast The Electronic Ballast produces a flicker-free light, which allows any shutter speed to be used in still photography or when filming. It is also designed for the light settings used when "scanning" pictures and the long exposure time this requires. The light output can be reduced by 50% (1 f/stop) which will also increase the colour temperature considerably. The unit is normally used with the auto-start switch in the 'OFF' position, when it is 'ON' the unit will start automatically when the power is connected. Power and colour adjustment (electronic ballast) When adjusting the 'POWER' knob the colour temperature will also be affected. The less energy used, the more the colour temperature will rise. After adjusting the 'POWER' knob, wait minimum three minutes to allow the colour temperature to stabilise. Getting started 1. Connect the ballast to a grounded mains outlet 2. Position the lamp head so that the small bubble on the inner quartz tube of the HMI bulb is pointing upwards 3. Turn the 'POWER' knob to 100% (Electronic Ballast only) 4. Press the green 'START' button and wait for at least three minutes to let the bulb reach maximum light strength and for the colour to stabilise. If the lamp fails to ignite, press the red 'STOP' button and wait five seconds before trying again 5. Once the lamp is on, always let it burn for at least three minutes. Shorter periods will decrease the bulbs' life span Trouble shooting Glass cover Black bulb Ensure that the glass cover pushes down the safety micro-switch. This is usually caused by the mercury dispersing too sparsely in the quartz tube. Heat the bulb with a hair-dryer to pool the particles together and then try again Change to a new bulb ensuring that it is properly pushed into the socket. Broken HMI-bulb If the lamp head or ballast is not functioning, please contact your nearest Profoto repair station. WARNING!
