TURBO Compact Operating Instructions Quantum Instruments Designed and manufactured in the USA 1. INTRODUCTION Power a digital camera and flash together with the Turbo C (Turbo Compact), or power one flash or one camera. Turbo C weighs under a pound and mounts under a camera! Turbo C uses the latest technology Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. The battery provides high power for quick flash recycling, great capacity, no memory, and long life. Quantum's NiMH battery also weighs less than other high power batteries! 2. WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS · Do not disassemble the Turbo C. High voltage! · Return defective equipment only to dealers, distributors, or Quantum. · Never put metal objects near either socket. Keep children away. · Turn Turbo C, camera and flash off before connecting or disconnecting cables. · Turbo C is powerful! Do not exceed flash's maximum consecutive full-power flashes (see flash instructions, or else 36 flashes). Then rest flash until it cools. Note: no limit for Qflash. 3. QUICK GUIDE For best results, charge your Turbo C the night before each use. The nature of Nickel Metal Hydride batteries is that they loose a portion of charge every day. Charging the night before or right before use insures maximum capacity for your job. The "fuel gauge" is a computer calculated monitor of remaining battery power. The "fuel gauge" also displays the amount of charge during recharging. When powering cameras and flashes, the green indicators go out as battery power is used up. With only one green indicator lit less than 25% capacity remains. When the green 25% indicator blinks, there is no power to the equipment connected. Turbo C has shut down power and must be recharged. 1 During charging, each green indicator will blink and eventually stay on as charge is returned to the battery. When all green indicators are lit steadily, charging is complete. See Section 5 for more charging details. Turbo C powers two pieces of photo gear at the same time. The large socket powers only flashes using Quantum Flash Cables ("C" series) as well as new short Flash Cables ("CC" series). Examples are CK, CKE, CM4, CV, CZ, and CCK, CCKE, CCM4, CCV, CCZ, etc. Plug these cables into the Turbo C large socket and into your flash. Mounting Turbo C Connect Turbo C to the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera. Make sure the rubber pad is between the camera and Turbo C. Tighten with the wheel at the bottom of the Turbo C. Push the wheel lock up if necessary. If you mount to a tripod, connect it after mounting the camera to Turbo C. Keep the wheel lock up when tightening the screw of the tripod. To dissasemble, loosen tripod first. When the wheel begins to rotate, push the wheel lock down to stop rotation. Completely disconnect the tripod. Then to disconnect the camera, push the wheel lock up and turn the wheel. FUEL GAUGE WHEEL TRIPOD LOCK ON/OFF The other socket powers only SOCKET digital cameras using Quantum WHEEL "XDC" and "YDC" series Camera Cables. Examples are YDC1, YDC3, YDC100, XDC2, XDC4, etc. 5. CHARGING Charge at room temperature. Charge the night before, or charge just before use to be assured of obtaining 100% charge. Turbo C is supplied with a universal charger that works with an AC mains power from 100 to 240 VAC. Your Turbo C is supplied with one of the following charger models: TCRUS (USA, Canada, Japan); TCRE (euro countries); TCRUK (United Kingdom); TCRA (Australia, New Zealand). Plug adapters may be used to allow charging from any 90-240 VAC power outlet. A voltage converter is not necessary. Be sure the AC mains socket is an uninterruptible line (not switched). The charge indicator [ ] will light when the charger is properly connected. It is important not to interrupt the charging so that the computerized fuel gauge remains accurate. If the charge cycle is interrupted, the fuel gauge may read incorrectly during use, but will correct itself on the next cycle. A full charge takes about 2 hours. Do not use any other type of charger and risk damage to the Turbo C and the charger! Plug a YDC or XDC cable into the small socket of Turbo C and turn the lock ring to secure the plug. Plug other end of cable into the camera it is designed for. Turbo C automatically adjusts the DC low voltage correctly for your type of camera. Turbo C is not compatible with "SD" or "CD" series Camera Cables. Turbo C is also not compatible with "X" series Flash Cables (such as XA2, XF2, etc.). Quantum Qflash "T" models come with their own power cord, which plugs into the large socket of Turbo C. 4. OPERATION For trouble free operation, always turn Turbo C, camera and flash off before connecting or disconnecting cables. To turn Turbo C on press and hold the button marked [ ] until the lights come on. To turn off, press and hold the button until the lights go out. The Large socket is called "Flash" and the small socket is called "Camera". Two yellow LED panel indicators are marked with Flash [ ] and Camera [ ] symbols. The indicators Flash and/or Camera will light steadily when connected to a camera and/or flash. Please see Sections 6 and 7 for LED indications of the status of your Turbo C and/or any problems that it may have detected. 2 3 When the charger is first connected the fuel gauge LED's turn on and off during a brief self check. When the self-check finishes, charging begins and the fuel gauge indicates charge progress. ERROR CONDITIONS and TROUBLESHOOTING Symptom A flash or camera cable is connected but the output indicator is not lit. "C" series Flash Cable is connected to a flash and the output light blinks for 30 seconds. The fuel gauge's 25% green light blinks for a few minutes, and then all lights go out and there is no power to the equipment connected. Solution The cable could be broken, shorted, or it may be the wrong cable. Turbo C has detected that no flash is connected. This could be caused by an intermittent or broken cable, or a cable that is not fully engaged in the socket. This is the low battery indication. Recharge. Check that the charger is connected to a live mains outlet that cannot be switched off. = steady light = blinking = off 6. "CAMERA" AND "FLASH" OUTPUT INDICATORS The indicators "Flash" [ sponding outputs. ] and "Camera" [ ] show status of the corre- A steady light means the output is supplying flash or camera power. A Blinking indicator shows when high voltage has shut down. Off indicates no power for that output. Typical examples are shown below: CAMERA FLASH Camera and Flash outputs supplying camera and flash power. C: Supplying camera power; F: Not supplying power to flash. C: Not supplying power to camera. F: Supplying flash power. C: Supplying camera power. F: Blinking. Blinking will stop in 30 seconds. An error condition has occurred and power to flash has shut down. 8. INTRODUCTION Alimentez un appareil numérique et un flash ou bien un flash seul ou un appareil seul. La batterie Turbo Compact pèse moins de 500 grammes et se fixe sous l'appareil. Ce modèle ultra compact utilise une technologie très récente à base d'éléments NiMH de très haute qualité qui offrent souplesse, durée de vie, temps de charge ultra court et très grande capacité. Les batteries Quantum NiMH sont en outre plus légères que n'importe quelle autre batterie de haute capacité. 2. MISES EN GARDE ET PRÉCAUTIONS · Ne démontez pas votre batterie Turbo C. Certains circuits sont sous très haute tension. · En cas de problème, retournez le matériel défectueux à votre revendeur ou distributeur · Ne mettez pas d'objets métalliques à proximité des prises. Ne laissez pas la batterie à portée des enfants. · Mettez toujours les différents éléments hors tension (appareil, batterie, flash) avant de débrancher les câbles. · La Turbo C est très puissante ! Ne tentez pas de dépasser le nombre maximal d'éclairs consécutifs que peut supporter votre flash (vérifiez sur la notice du flash) et laisser le système refroidir en cas d'utilisation très intensive. Remarque : il n'y a pas de limite sur le Q-Flash. 3. INSTRUCTIONS RAPIDES Pour des résultats optimums, chargez votre batterie systématiquement la nuit qui précède son utilisation. Une des caractéristiques des batteries NiMH est qu'elles perdent un peu de leur charge chaque jour. En chargeant la veille, vous êtes sûr d'être au maximum du potentiel de la batterie. Le témoin de niveau de charge est relié à un système électronique complexe qui calcule en temps réel le niveau encore disponible. Ce témoin donne aussi le niveau pendant la charge sur le secteur. Lorsque les appareils sont connectés, les diodes vertes s'éteignent au fur et à mesure que le niveau de charge descend. Lorsqu'il n'en reste qu'une seule allumée, cela signifie qu'il reste moins de 25% disponibles. Lorsque cette dernière diode clignote, les appareils ne sont plus alimentés et il convient de recharger la batterie qui s'est mise hors tension automatiquement. Pendant la charge, chaque diode commence par clignoter puis elle 6 7 s'allume en continu. Lorsque toutes les diodes sont allumées en continu, cela signifie que la charge est complète. Reportez-vous à la section 5 pour plus de détail. La Turbo C peut alimenter deux appareils en même temps. La grosse prise est dédiée aux flashes exclusivement et elle s'utilise avec les cordons Quantum de la série C et de la nouvelle série CC. Vous trouverez par exemple les références CK, CKE, CM4, CV, CZ et autres CCK, CCKE, CCV, CCZ etc... Branchez une extrémité du câble sur cette prise, l'autre étant reliée au flash lui-même. Montage de la Turbo C Attachez la Turbo C au pas de vis de la semelle de l'appareil photo. Assurezvous que la pastille de caoutchouc se trouve bien entre l'appareil et la batterie. Serrez avec la vis située sur le bas de la batterie. Enfoncez le bouton de verrouillage si nécessaire. Si vous montez l'appareil sur pied, faites le après avoir monté la batterie sur l'appareil. Pour démonter, desserez le pied en premier. Lorsque la couronne commence à tourner, appuyez sur le verrouillage pour arrêter la rotation. Enlevez alors complètement le pied. RECHARGE Rechargez à température ambiante. Pour toujours avoir le maximum d'énergie, rechargez la nuit qui précède l'utilisation ou bien juste avant. La Turbo C est fournie avec un chargeur universel qui fonctionne avec des courant secteur compris entre 100 et 240 V. En fonction de votre pays de résidence, la Turbo C vous sera fournie avec l'un des chargeurs suivants : TCRUS (USA, Canada, Japon), TCRE (pays européens), TCRUK (Grande Bretagne), TCRA (Australie, Nouvelle Zélande).
