· Before using this unit, make sure to read the instructions below, and the Owner's Manual. ..........................................................................................................
002b
· Do not open or perform any internal modifications on the unit. ..........................................................................................................
003
· Do not attempt to repair the unit, or replace parts within it (except when this manual provides specific instructions directing you to do so). Refer all servicing to your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor, as listed on the "Information" page. ..........................................................................................................
004
· When using the unit with a snare stand or an MDS-10 recommended by Roland, the snare stand or the MDS-10 must be carefully placed so it is level and sure to remain stable. If not using a snare stand or an MDS-10, you still need to make sure that any location you choose for placing the unit provides a level surface that will properly support the unit, and keep it from wobbling. ..........................................................................................................
011
· Do not allow any objects (e.g., flammable material, coins, pins); or liquids of any kind (water, soft drinks, etc.) to penetrate the unit.
..........................................................................................................
013
· Never use or store the unit in places that are: · Subject to temperature extremes (e.g., direct sunlight in an enclosed vehicle, near a heating duct, on top of heat-generating equipment); or are · Damp (e.g., baths, washrooms, on wet floors); or are · Humid; or are · Exposed to rain; or are · Dusty; or are · Subject to high levels of vibration. .......................................................................................................... · This unit should be used only with a snare stand or an MDS-10 that is recommended by Roland. ..........................................................................................................
· In households with small children, an adult should provide supervision until the child is capable of following all the rules essential for the safe operation of the unit. ..........................................................................................................

CAUTION
104
CAUTION
· Try to prevent cords and cables from becoming entangled. Also, all cords and cables should be placed so they are out of the reach of children. ..........................................................................................................
106
· Due to the nature of the materials used in the sensor, changes in room temperature and humid may affect the sensitivity of the sensor. ..........................................................................................................
104
· Never climb on top of, nor place heavy objects on the unit. ..........................................................................................................
104
· Do not apply excessive force to the sensor and cushion located under the head. Doing so can interfere with accurate detection, and may damage it. ..........................................................................................................
· Brushes can be used to play the PD-100/120 when the TD-10 is used as the sound module. When using brushes, be sure to use nylon brushes. Using metal brushes will not only scratch the head, but can also be hazardous, since the tip of the brush may catch in the mesh of the net. ..........................................................................................................
IMPORTANT NOTES
In addition to the items listed under "USING THE UNIT SAFELY" on page 2Â3, please read and observe the following:
Placement
·Do not expose the unit to direct sunlight, place it near devices that radiate heat, leave it inside an enclosed vehicle, or otherwise subject it to temperature extremes. Excessive heat can deform or discolor the unit.
Maintenance
·For everyday cleaning wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth or one that has been slightly dampened with water. To remove stubborn dirt, use a cloth impregnated with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Afterwards, be sure to wipe the unit thoroughly with a soft, dry cloth. ·Never use benzine, thinners, alcohol or solvents of any kind, to avoid the possibility of discoloration and/or deformation.
Additional Precautions
·Use a reasonable amount of care when using the unit's buttons, sliders, or other controls; and when using its jacks and connectors. Rough handling can lead to malfunctions. ·When connecting / disconnecting all cables, grasp the connector itself--never pull on the cable. This way you will avoid causing shorts, or damage to the cable's internal elements.

Features
· Snare/tom pad with net material on head for superior playing feel, and quiet response. · The PD-120 contains a rim sensor, for expressive possibilities rivaling an acoustic snare drum. · The potential of the PD-100/120 is realized most fully when it is used in conjunction with the TD-10 percussion sound module. - Tonal changes can be expressed by varying the location at which the pad is struck. - Brushes (nylon) can be used for brush playing.

Setup
* To Prevent malfunction and/or damage to speakers or other devices, always turn down the volume of all devices when you make connections.
Connecting to a TD-10
Use the included cable to make connections. When connecting a PD-120, use the supplied stereo cable. If you use a monaural cable, rim shots cannot be played. Rim shots can be played only when a PD-120 is connected to the TRIGGER INPUT jack number 2 (SNARE). Connect the L-shaped plug of the included cable to the PD-100/120. This will prevent strain from being applied to the PD-100/120.
Connecting to a TD-5, TD-7 or SPD-11
When connecting a TD-5, TD-7, or SPD-11 to the PD-120, it will not be possible to play separate sounds from the head and rim if you use the included stereo cable. If you use the separately sold PCS-31 connection cable and connect the PD-120 to two trigger input jacks of the TD-5, TD-7, or SPD-11, you will be able to play a separate sound by rim shots. In this case, both the head sound and the rim sound will sound simultaneously if you play a rim shot or strongly strike the head.
When using a snare stand
Use the PD-120 as the snare. Since the PD120 has a diameter slightly smaller than an acoustic snare drum, some snare stands may not be able to hold it securely. When looking for a snare stand for the PD-120, select one that is designed to firmly hold a 12-inch diameter drum (like the PD-120). If this is not fixed firmly in place, double triggering may occur. * Even when using a snare stand, be sure to tighten the stand fixing screw.

When using a tom stand
When attaching the PD-100/120 to a tom stand, check the dimension of the rod. Depending on the dimension of the rod, it may not be possible to attach the pad to the stand.

Adjusting the head
The head tension of the PD-100 and PD-120 can be adjusted. To make adjustments, you will need the included tuning key. CAUTION: The PD-100 and PD-120 are shipped from the factory with the head tension loosened. Be sure to tighten the tension before use. Striking the head when the head tension is loose may damage the sensor. In general, a tension that produces a strike response approximately the same as an acoustic drum will be appropriate.

Strike the head to check the current tension of the head. First adjust bolt `a' in the above diagram. Rotate it clockwise to tighten the head tension, or slightly counterclockwise to loosen the tension. Adjust bolt `b' so that the tension is the same as the tension of `a'. Next adjust `c' and `d', and `e' and `f' in the same way. Make sure that the head tension is even, and repeat steps 3 and 4 if you wish to make further adjustments. * On the PD-100/120, adjusting the head tension affects only the head response, and does not change the pitch of the sound as it would on an acoustic drum. To adjust the pitch, edit the sound parameters of the TD-5, TD-7, SPD-11, or TD-10. For details refer to the respective owner's manual. * The head tension will change as the instrument is used, so you should readjust when necessary.
Adjustment for positional sensing with the TD-10's TRIGGER INPUT jack number 2 (SNARE)
When a TD-10 is used as the sound module, the location at which the pad is struck can be varied to produce tonal changes. In this case, it is important to adjust the head to an even tension so that the striking location can be detected accurately. For details on adjustments, refer to the TD-10 owner's manual. * The TD-5, TD-7, and SPD-11 are not able to detect the striking point.
Replacing the head
When the head should be replaced
The head is an expendable item that eventually will wear out and need to be replaced. Replace the head when the following occurs: · The head surface is torn · Striking points are no longer detected correctly, even when the head tension is properly adjusted. · Slack portions remain in the head even when the head tension is properly adjusted.
