POSTAL SCALE INSTRUCTIONS ds-3 / ds-5 / ds-10 Digital Postal Scales INTRODUCTION Congratulations on the purchase of your new Royal ds-Series Digital Postal Scale. We recommend that you read this manual carefully to become familiar with the operation of the product. The manual explains, in simple steps, how to operate and maintain your new scale. Please retain this guide for further reference. The ds-Series Scales are designed for weighing letters and small parcels. They are great in the kitchen, too; perfect for measuring ingredients used in your favorite recipes or for weighing foods for portion control when dieting. The scales are also ideal around the house for hobbies, like models, and countless other uses. Please note that the weight and postal rates provided are for reference and informational purposes only. It is not intended that the weight and/or postal rates be used or relied upon for any commercial use. Postal rates are also subject to change at any time without notice. WARNING: To prevent damage, do NOT exceed the specified weight capacity of the scale. Do NOT lift or pick-up the scale by holding the weighing platform. The scale should be picked-up from the bottom or the base of the scale. BASIC OPERATION 1) Ensure that the scale is placed on a hard, flat, level surface. 2) Press the on/off button. Do not place anything on the scale platform before the unit is turned on or while it is initializing. The scale will show dashes across the display for 10 to 20-seconds while it is initializing. Wait for the dashes to disappear and for "0.0" to appear on the display. The scale is then ready for weighing. 3) Place the letter/parcel or item on the scale; the weight is displayed within a couple of seconds. If the unit displays dashes or does not show zero at any other time during the unit's operation while there is nothing on the scale platform, press the tare key to reset the scale to zero and wait until "0.0" appears on the display. The scale can then be used. The "LOW BATTERY" icon will turn on at the bottom of the display when the battery power is low. Replace the one 9-volt battery as soon as possible. AUTO POWER OFF The unit automatically turns itself off after a period of 30 seconds of inactivity. To restart the scale, simply press the on/off button. UNIT OF MEASURE · Press the kg/oz button to scroll through the different units of measure. The scale can display a weight in either pounds or metric: pounds and ounces (0lb 0.0oz), ounces only (0.0oz), or kilograms/grams (0g.). Model ds-10 only: When measuring in pounds and ounces, the scale will display the ounces-portion of the weight in whole ounce increments; fractions of an ounce will not be displayed. For weight less than a whole ounce, showing to a tenth of an ounce (0.1-oz.), please change the unit of measure to ounces only. The unit of measure can be changed at any time: such as while the display shows zero with nothing on the scale platform, after an item has been placed on the platform and the weight is already displayed, or even after the "hold" function has been activated. TARE FUNCTION The tare function allows the display to be reset to show a weight of zero, even after placing an object on the scale. This feature allows you to get the net weight of an item in a container or a box. 1) After the scale is turned on, place the container (measuring cup, box, etc.) on the scale platform. 2) Press the tare key once the weight reading of the container is stable and wait until "0.0" appears on the display. 3) Place item/contents to be weighed into the container. 4) Read the weight of the contents on the display. The weight shown will be the weight of the item in the container, excluding the weight of the container itself. If the "hold" function was not enabled, the scale should return to a default weight reading of zero once the item is removed from the container or box. Removing the container or box itself (the tared weight) will result in the scale displaying dashes. Press the tare key to reset the weight reading to zero. IMPORTANT: Please note that the total weight of the container and its contents should not exceed the weight capacity of the scale. HOLD FUNCTION The "hold" function allows the weighing of large envelopes, boxes or other items that hang past the edge of the platform and block the scale display from being read. Once the hold key is pressed, the weight will remain on the display for 120 seconds after the item has been removed from the scale so the weight can easily be read without any interference. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Press the hold key. The "hold" icon will turn-on. Place the item on the scale platform. Wait for the beep tone to sound. Remove the item from the scale platform. The item's weight reading will remain on the display. Press the tare key to cancel the "hold" feature and return the scale to zero. You may also press the hold key after the item has already been placed on the platform and the weight is shown on the display. Steps 1) and 2) above should be reversed; but steps 3) through 5) remain unchanged. Once an item is weighed and the hold function is enabled; if the scale senses any change in weight on the platform (besides removing the actual item being weighed) the "hold" icon will blink to alert you of the change in weight. It will stop blinking when either everything is removed off the scale platform, or when the original item whose weight is on "hold" on the display is placed back on the platform. POSTAL RATE CHART CHART INSTALLATION / REPLACEMENT To replace the postal rate chart in the scale, simply lift the clear plastic cover and remove the rate chart from the top of the scale platform. Place the new rate chart on the top of the scale, center and align it to properly fit within the slightly depressed area on the top of the scale platform and place the clear plastic cover back onto the scale, over the chart. ***IMPORTANT NOTICE: *** ORDERING REPLACEMENT RATE CHARTS To order a replacement or updated rate chart, please call Royal's Supplies Department, toll-free, at 1-888-2614555; or visit Royal's web site at http://www.royal.com. UNITED STATES RATE CHARTS When determining the U.S. postage rate for either Domestic U.S. First-Class Mail (within the USA) or International Airmail (from the USA to all other countries), round up to the next whole ounce if the weight reading is any fraction above a whole ounce measurement (from 0.1-ounce through 0.9-ounce). For example: a reading of 2.1-ounces is charged the postage amount shown for 3-ounces on the rate chart; or a reading of 1.7ounces is charged the postage amount shown for 2-ounces. Please read the Postal Rate Chart itself for all rates and any other important information. CANADIAN RATE CHARTS For customers located in Canada, a postal rate chart for Canada is also packed with the product (the Canada Post Rate Chart may be printed on the other side of the USA Postal Rate Chart for some models). Install the Canada Post rate chart in the scale as described above. To determine the proper postage based on the actual weight of the letter or parcel, find the weight range on the chart that the weight of the item falls within and then follow across to the destination of the item for the correct postage amount. CLEAR PLASTIC COVER The clear plastic cover on the top of the scale platform, covering the rate chart, is there to protect the postal rate chart and platform. *** WARNING: *** The plastic cover is NOT safe for use in a microwave oven or conventional oven. It is NOT dishwasher safe. Do NOT place or use the cover in a dishwasher, microwave oven, conventional oven or near any heat source. The clear plastic cover should be removed from the scale and thoroughly washed with standard dish detergent and warm water after coming in direct contact with any food. The scale is NOT water proof. Do NOT submerge the scale itself in water or rinse the scale under water. The scale should be wiped clean using dish detergent or a mild, general household cleaner that is safe on plastic.
