If you are in any doubt regarding this matter, consult an electrician. < Choose the installation location of your unit carefully. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or close to a source of heat. Also avoid locations subject to vibrations and excessive dust, heat, cold or moisture. < Do not place the unit on an amplifier/receiver. < Do not open the cabinet as this might result in damage to the circuitry or electrical shock. If a foreign object should get into the unit, contact your dealer or service company. < When removing the power plug from the wall outlet, always pull directly on the plug, never yank the cord. < Do not attempt to clean the unit with chemical solvents as this might damage the finish. Use a clean, dry cloth. < Keep this manual in a safe place for future reference. 4 Remote Control Unit The provided remote control unit allows the unit to be operated from a distance. When operating the remote control unit, point it towards the remote sensor on the front panel of the unit. < Even if the remote control unit is operated within the effective range (5 m), remote control operation may be impossible if there are any obstacles between the unit and the remote control unit. < If the remote control unit is operated near other products which generate infrared rays, or if other remote control devices using infrared rays are used near the unit, it may operate incorrectly. Conversely, the other products may operate incorrectly. Precautions concerning batteries < Be sure to insert the batteries with correct positive "+" and negative "_" polarities. < Use batteries of the same type. Never use different types of batteries together. < Rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be used. Refer to the precautions on their labels. < When the remote control unit is not to be used for a long time (more than a month), remove the batteries from the remote control unit to prevent them from leaking. If they leak, wipe away the liquid inside the battery compartment and replace the batteries with new ones. ENGLISH < Do not heat or disassemble batteries and never dispose of old batteries by throwing them in a fire. Battery installation 1. Remove the battery compartment cover. 2. Insert two "AAA" (R03 or UM-4) dry batteries. Make sure that the batteries are inserted with their positive "+ " and negative "_ " polarities positioned correctly. 3. Close the cover. Battery replacement If the distance required between the remote control unit and main unit decreases, the batteries are exhausted. In this case replace the batteries with new ones. 5 Connections CAUTION: < Switch off (standby) the power before making connections. < Read the instructions of each component you intend to use with this unit. < Be sure to insert each plug securely. To prevent hum and noise, do not bundle the connection cords. A B C D 1 2 AC wall socket 3 6 A FM antenna While in FM mode, tune in an FM station and extend the lead to find the best position for the reception. This antenna may need to be repositioned if you move your unit to a new location. D Battery compartment The battery supplies a backup power to the builtin clock and memory, when the unit is momentarily disconnected from the AC outlet. Battery installation B AM loop antenna Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM ANTENNA terminal. Place the antenna in the direction which gives the best reception. 1. Loosen the lid using a coin, etc. 2. Remove the lid. 3. Insert a CR2032 lithium-ion battery with it's positive + face facing outer side. 4. Replace the lid. Battery replacement If the clock comes to indicate the wrong time, replace the battery with a new one. Precautions concerning button-shaped battery < Be sure to insert the battery with correct positive "+" and negative "_" polarities. < Do not heat or disassemble battery and never dispose of old battery by throwing them in a fire. ENGLISH C DC IN jack Connect the provided AC adapter to this jack. C ALARM 1, ALARM 2 Hold down these buttons for more than 2 seconds to enter the timer setting mode. Also these buttons are used to turn on or off the timer function. D Dock connector MEMORY/ CLOCK ADJ SLEEP B DISPLAY BASS TREBLE MUTING Before use, insert an appropriate Dock adapter in the Dock (see page 10). Insert an iPod mobile digital device into this dock. F FM MODE In FM TUNER mode, use this button to select stereo or monaural. 8 G FM/AM R FUNCTION In TUNER mode, press this button to select FM or AM. H Play/Pause (y/J) Use these buttons to select the source you want to listen to. S PRESET/SCROLL (/°) Use this button to start or pause playback of iPod. I DISPLAY In standby mode, use this button to check the timer on/off time. During the snooze function is working, use this button to display the current time. J AUX IN In TUNER mode, use these buttons to select a preset station. In iPod mode, use these buttons to scroll up and down the menu. T MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ In the TUNER mode, use this button to store preset channels into memory. This button is also used for clock adjustment. U MENU You can connect a portable audio player to this jack. See page 17 for details. K TUNING/TIME (.//, /°) ENGLISH Use this button to go back to the previous menu. V SELECT In TUNER mode, use these buttons to tune in stations. In iPod mode, use these buttons to skip tracks. Hold down this button to search for a part of a track. L SNOOZE/DIMMER Use this button to confirm selection in menus. W MUTING Use this button to mute the sound. X TREBLE After the TIMER ON time is reached, use this button to turn the unit off for 5 minutes. This button is also used for display dimming. M Display N VOLUME Use this button to enter treble level adjustment mode. Y BASS Use this button to enter bass level adjustment mode. Press these buttons to adjust the volume level. O Remote sensor When operating the remote control unit, point it towards here. P PHONES Note: To simplify explanations, instructions in this manual refer to the names of the buttons and controls on the front panel only. Associated controls on the remote control will also operate similarly. For private listening, insert the headphones plug into this jack, and adjust the volume using the VOLUME button. See page 14 for details. Q Standby/on ( ) Use this button to turn the unit on or standby. 9 Display A B Getting Started The SR-L230i comes mounted with an adapter "60GB (color) + Photo 40/60GB". To play your iPod through the SR-L230i, you have first to check if the factory mounted adapter fits your model of iPod. If it does not, you have to replace it with a correct one, as explained below. 1. Remove the adapter from the Dock of the SRL230i. Hold the left and right sides of the adapter and gently pull it up. 2. Choose the Dock adapter that fits your iPod mobile digital device. "nano" for iPod nano. "mini" for iPod mini. G F E D C A Shows the digital clock, frequency, sleep time or preset channels. B When the unit is on, one of these indicators lights to show the current source. C Lights in preset tuning mode. D Lights during muting. E Lights when an FM stereo broadcast is tuned. F Lights when the sleep function is active. G Lights when the timer is on. "20GB (color) + Photo 30GB" for iPod with color display (20GB, 30GB, U2 Special Edition). "60GB (color) + Photo 40GB/60GB" for iPod with Click Wheel (40 GB), iPod with color display (40 GB, 60 GB) and iPod with video (60 GB). "20GB + U2" for iPod with Click Wheel (20 GB, U2 Special Edition) and iPod with video (30 GB). < Use a commercially available adapter to play iPod with dock connector. 10 3. Insert the adapter into the Dock of the SRL230i. Fit the front edge of the adapter into the Dock, and then press the back edge of the adapter onto the Dock until a slight "click" is heard indicating the adapter is inserted correctly. Compatible iPod Software In case your iPod will not work with the SR-L230i or with the remote control unit, software update may solve the problem. Visit the Apple website and download the latest iPod Software. http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ 1 iPod is a trademark of Apple Computer, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. 2 ENGLISH < When you need to remove the adapter, hold the left and right sides of the adapter and gently pull it up. 11 Setting the Clock 4 Press the skip button (.//) to set the current hour. / CLOCK ADJ < You cannot set the clock when the source is "TUNER". 5 Press the CLOCK ADJ button. The "minute" value blinks. 1 Press the CLOCK ADJ button to display the clock. 6 Press the skip button (.//) to set the current minute. 2 Press the CLOCK ADJ button again. "12 HR" or "24 HR" blinks on the display. If you want to change the hour mode, press the . or / button. 7 Press the CLOCK ADJ button. The clock starts. < When no button is pressed for 8 seconds, the timer setting mode will be cancelled. 3 Press the CLOCK ADJ button again. The "hour" value blinks. 12 Basic Operation 1 Dimmer 213 1 Press the button to turn the unit on. You can change the front panel's display brightness. Use the DIMMER button to change the brightness between three levels. < The unit turns on with the source that was last selected. If the iPod that is in playback mode is inserted into the Dock, the SR-L230i will automatically turn on and start playback of the iPod. < This function will be cancelled when the button is pressed. ENGLISH Muting 2 Press the FUNCTION button to select a source. To mute the sound temporarily, press the MUTING button. Press the MUTING button again to restore the sound. < To listen to an external source connected to the AUX IN jack, select AUX. MUTING < If you select "iPod" when no iPod is docked, the iPod indicator on the display blinks. 3 Play the source, and adjust the volume using the VOLUME buttons (­/+). < The MUTING indicator lights on the display to indicate that the muting is engaged. < If you change the volume or source during the muting, the muting will be canceled. The volume is adjustable from MIN (0) to MAX (40). Hold down the VOLUME ­ or + button to turn down or up the volume continuously. 13 Basic Operation 2 Adjusting the bass and treble sound You can change the bass and treble sound between "­5" to "+5". Press the BASS or TREBLE button. And then press the VOLUME buttons (­/+) to adjust the sound level within 3 seconds. Sleep timer Each press of the SLEEP button permits setting an interval (from 90 down to 10 minutes). The unit will automatically turn off and then into Standby mode. Each press of the SLEEP button changes the time indication by 10 minutes. BASS TREBLE 90 80 Off .........10 < When you want to check remaining time, press the SLEEP button once. Headphones < If you press the SLEEP button twice, the sleep timer is cancelled. Insert the headphones plug into the PHONES jack, and adjust the volume. CAUTION Always lower the volume level prior to plugging in your headphones. TO AVOID DAMAGING YOUR HEARING - Do not place your headphones on your head until after you have plugged them in. 14 Listening to iPod Insert the iPod into the Dock of the SR-L230i. To select iPod mode Then push the Play/Pause button (y/J) on the iPod or the SR-L230i. The SR-L230i will automatically turn on and start playback from the iPod's music list. < Make sure to use an appropriate Dock adapter (see "Getting Started" on page 10). < The battery of the iPod is recharged to the full whenever the iPod is docked and the SR-L230i is ON. < When headphones are plugged into the iPod, sound comes from both the speakers of the SRL230i and the headphones. Select "iPod" using the FUNCTION button. If an iPod is already docked, playback will start. When no iPod is docked, the iPod indicator on the display blinks. < You can also use the Play/Pause button (y/J) to select "iPod". 15 ENGLISH Operating iPod To go back to the previous menu MENU BC A Press the MENU button. This button works with the same functions as its iPod counterpart. A To suspend playback temporarily (pause mode) Select the menu item PRESET/SCROLL Press the Play/Pause button (G/J) during playback. Playback stops at the current position. To resume playback, press the Play/Pause button (G/J) again. B Search for a part of a track SELECT During playback, hold down the skip button (. or /) for more than 2 seconds and release it when the part you want to listen to is found. Press the SCROLL buttons (/°) to scroll to the menu item you want. And then press the SELECT button. C To skip to the next or a previous track During playback, repeatedly press the skip button (.or/) until the desired track is found. The selected track will be played from the beginning. < When the . button is pressed during playback, the track being played will be played from the beginning. To return to the beginning of the previous track, press the . button twice. 16 Listening to an External Source 1 Connect the PHONES jack (audio output jack) 3 Play the source, and adjust the volume of both of a portable audio player to the AUX IN jack of the SR-L230i using the supplied stereo mini plug cable. the SR-L230i and the audio player. You can use this way of connection to listen to an iPod that has no Dock connector or that has, but an appropriate Dock adapter is not available. ENGLISH When using the PHONES jack of your mini player, you must adjust the volume of the mini-player or you may hear no sound from your SR-L230i. < Turning the volume of the mini player up too high may cause the sound from your SR-L230i to be distorted. If this is the case, reduce the volume of the mini player until the distortion stops and then adjust the volume level of the SR-L230i to a comfortable listening level. 2 Select "AUX" using the FUNCTION button. 17 Listening to the Radio Checking the tuner frequency Press the DISPLAY button. The current band and frequency displays for 20 seconds. 1 3 2 DISPLAY 1 Select "TUNER" using the FUNCTION button. If the reception is poor 2 Select FM or AM using the FM/AM button. For the best reception, rotate the FM or the AM antenna until you get stations clearly. FM MODE Button 3 Select the station you want to listen to (auto Pressing this button alternates between Stereo mode and Mono mode. selection). When a station is tuned in, the tuning process will stop automatically. < To stop the auto selection, press the skip button. Stereo FM stereo broadcasts are received in stereo and the "STEREO" indicator lights in the display. < If the sound is distorted and the "STEREO" indicator flashes, the signal is not strong enough for good stereo reception. In this case, change to MONO mode. Mono To compensate for weak FM stereo reception, select this mode. Reception will now be forced monaural, reducing unwanted noise. Selecting stations which cannot be tuned automatically (manual selection) When the skip button (. or/ ) is pressed momentarily the frequency changes by a fixed step. Press the skip button repeatedly until the station you want to listen to is found. 18 Preset Tuning You can program 20 FM & 20 AM channel presets. How to select a preset station 1 To select FM or AM, press the FM/AM button. 1 Tune in a station you want to listen to (see FM/AM page 18). 2 Press the MEMORY button. MEMORY/ CLOCK ADJ 2 Press the PRESET (/°) buttons repeatedly until the desired preset station is found. PRESET/SCROLL ENGLISH 3 Within 10 seconds, select a preset channel to store the station using the PRESET (/°) buttons. PRESET/SCROLL 4 Within 10 seconds, press the MEMORY button. MEMORY/ CLOCK ADJ To store more stations, repeat steps 1 to 4 . 19 Timer 1 3 Press the skip buttons (. or /) to set the minute, and then press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button. / ALARM 1, ALARM 2 < The unit can be set two different timer setting separately. < Adjust the clock before setting the timer (see page 12). Now the on time is set. "OFF" and the off time value blink. 4 Press the skip buttons (. or /) to set the hour, and then press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button. Setting the timer 1 Press and hold the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button for more than 2 seconds to display "ON". 5 Press the skip buttons (. or /) to set the minute, and then press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button. The clock and the Timer indicator ( blinks on the display. or ) < If no button is pressed for about 8 seconds, the timer setting mode will be cancelled. Now the off time is set. "iPod" or "TUNER" blinks. 2 Press the skip buttons (. or /) to set the hour, and then press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button. 6 Select a source (iPod or TUNER) using the skip buttons (. // ), and then press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button. < You cannot select "AUX". 20 7 Set the volume using the skip buttons (.//), and then press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button. The volume for timer operation is adjustable from 10 to max. Setting the timer is now completed. ALARM 1, ALARM 2 To turn on the timer 1 After setting the timer, press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button to turn the timer on. ENGLISH The Timer indicator ( display. or ) appears on the 2 Prepare the source. When the source is set to "iPod", insert an iPod. When the source is set to "TUNER", tune in a station. 3 Press the button to turn the unit standby. Don't forget to turn the unit standby, or the timer won't work. If you turn the timer on when the unit is on, the unit will turn off when the timer reaches the off time. < Playback volume will gradually increase up to your set volume when the unit is turned on by timer. < If the source is set to "iPod" but no iPod is set, the unit will turn on into TUNER mode. < When the source is set to "TUNER" and the unit turns on, it will tune in to the station you selected last time. 21 Timer 2 To turn off the timer When you don't use the timer, press the ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 button to turn it off. Will not play. e Remove the iPod from the dock, wait a few seconds, and insert it again. e Software update may solve the problem. Visit the Apple website and download the latest iPod Software (see page 11). Cannot operate the iPod. e Set off the HOLD switch of the iPod. General No power e Check the connection to the AC power supply. Check and make sure the AC source is not a switched outlet and that, if it is, the switch is turned on. Make sure there is power to the AC outlet by plugging another item such as a lamp or fan into the outlet. No sound from speakers. e Select the source by pressing the FUNCTION button. e Adjust the volume. e Pull out the headphone's plug from the PHONES jack. e If the MUTING indicator lights on the display, press the MUTING button. The sound is noisy. e The unit is too close to a TV or similar appliances. Install the unit apart from them, or turn them off. Remote control doesn't work. e If the battery is exhausted, replace it with a new one (see page 5). e Use remote control unit within the range (5 m) and point at the remote sensor on the front panel. e Clear obstacles between the remote control unit and the main unit. e If a strong light is near the unit, turn it off. ENGLISH Tuner Cannot listen to any station, or signal is too weak. e Tune in the station properly. e Rotate the FM or the AM antenna until you get stations clearly. If normal operation cannot be recovered, unplug the power cord from the outlet and plug it again. Maintenance If the surface of the unit gets dirty, wipe with a soft cloth or use a diluted mild liquid soap. Be sure to remove any excess liquid completely. Do not use thinner, benzine or alcohol as they may damage the surface of the unit. En cas de doute dans ce domaine, consultez un électricien. < Choisissez soigneusement le lieu d'installation de votre appareil. Evitez de l'exposer directement au soleil ou de le placer près d'une source de chaleur. Evitez aussi les emplacements sujets aux vibrations et à une poussière excessive, à la chaleur, au froid ou à l'humidité. < Ne placez pas l'appareil sur un amplificateur/récepteur. < N'ouvrez pas le boîtier au risque d'endommager les circuits ou de subir un choc électrique. Si un objet étranger est entré dans l'appareil, contactez votre revendeur ou un service technique. < Quand vous débranchez le cordon d'alimentation de la prise murale, saisissez toujours la fiche, ne tirez jamais sur le cordon. < N'essayez pas de nettoyer l'appareil avec des solvants chimiques car cela pourrait endommager la finition. Utilisez un chiffon propre et doux. < Conservez ce manuel en lieu sûr pour référence ultérieure. ATTENTION < N'exposez pas l'appareil à des éclaboussures ou à des gouttes d'eau. < Ne posez pas d'objet contenant du liquide, tel qu'un vase, sur l'appareil. < N'installez pas cet appareil dans un espace confiné, dépourvu de ventilation, comme par exemple une bibliothèque ou similaire. < L'appareil tire un courant nominal de veille de la prise secteur, avec son interrupteur STANDBY/ON en position STANDBY. < L'appareil doit être placé suffisamment près de la prise secteur pour que vous puissiez à tout moment saisir la fiche du cordon d'alimentation. < Un appareil de classe ! doit être connecté à une prise secteur via une fiche avec mise à la terre. 24 Boîtier de télécommande Le boîtier de télécommande fourni permet la commande à distance de l'appareil. Pour l'utilisation du boîtier de télécommande, dirigez-le vers le capteur de télécommande du panneau avant de l'appareil. < Même si le boîtier de télécommande est activé dans la zone de fonctionnement (5 m), la commande à distance peut être impossible s'il y a des obstacles entre le lecteur et le boîtier de télécommande. < Si le boîtier de télécommande fonctionne dans le voisinage d'autres appareils générant des rayons infrarouges, ou si d'autres télécommandes utilisant des rayons infrarouges sont utilisées près du lecteur, le lecteur peut ne pas bien fonctionner. Dans la situation inverse, les autres appareils peuvent ne pas bien fonctionner. Précautions à observer concernant les piles < Placez bien les piles en respectant les polarités plus + et moins _ . < Utilisez des piles du même type. N'essayez jamais d'utiliser des types de pile différents ensemble. < Des piles rechargeables ou non rechargeables peuvent être utilisées. Référez-vous à leurs étiquettes pour les précautions à respecter. < Si le boîtier de télécommande n'est pas utilisé pendant une longue période (plus d'un mois), retirez les piles du boîtier de télécommande pour éviter des fuites de pile. Si elles coulent, essuyez le liquide dans le compartiment des piles et remplacez les piles par des neuves. < Ne chauffez pas ni démontez ni mettez au feu les piles. Mise en place des piles FRANÇAIS 1. Retirez le couvercle du compartiment des piles. 2. Introduisez deux piles "AAA" (R03, UM-4). Assurezvous que les piles sont correctement mises en respectant les polarités plus + et moins _. 3. Fermer le couvercle jusqu'au déclic. Remplacement des piles Si vous remarquez que la distance entre le boîtier de télécommande et le lecteur devient plus courte pour un fonctionnement correct, ceci indique que les piles sont usées. Dans ce cas, remplacez les piles par des nouvelles. 25 Connexions ATTENTION: < Eteignez l'appareil avant de faire des connexions. < Lisez les instructions concernant chaque élément que vous voulez employer avec cet appareil. < Veillez à bien insérer chaque fiche de connexion. Pour prévenir les ronflements et bruits, ne regroupez pas les cordons de connexion. A B C D 1 2 Prise secteur 3 26 A Antenne FM En mode FM, réglez-vous sur la station FM et étendez le fil d'antenne pour trouver la meilleure position de réception. Cette antenne peut devoir être repositionnée si vous déplacez votre appareil. D Logement de la pile La pile fournit du courant de secours à l'horloge intégrée et à la mémoire lorsque l'appareil est momentanément déconnecté de la prise de courant. Installation de la pile 1. Desserrez le couvercle en utilisant une pièce, etc. 2. Retirez le couvercle. 3. Insérez une pile lithium-ion CR2032 avec le côté positif + vers l'externe. 4. Remettez le couvercle. Remplacement de la pile Si l'horloge affiche une heure erronée, remplacez la pile par une neuve. Précautions concernant la pile bouton < Veillez à insérer la pile correctement en suivant les polarités positives "+" et négatives "_". < Ne chauffez pas ni démontez la pile et ne vous débarrassez jamais de la pile usagée en la jetant au feu. B Antenne cadre AM Branchez l'antenne cadre AM fournie à la prise AM ANTENNA. Placez l'antenne dans la direction donnant la meilleure réception. C Prise DC IN Branchez l'adaptateur secteur fourni à cette prise. T MEMORY/CLOCK ADJ Vous pouvez brancher à cette prise un lecteur audio portable. Voir page 37 pour des détails. K TUNING/TIME (.//, /°) En mode TUNER, utilisez ce bouton pour mémoriser des canaux préréglés. Ce bouton est également utilisé pour le réglage de l'horloge. U MENU En mode TUNER, utilisez ces boutons pour changer les stations. En mode iPod, utilisez ces boutons pour changer de plage (piste). Maintenez ce bouton enfoncé pour rechercher une partie dans une plage. L SNOOZE/DIMMER Utilisez ce bouton pour revenir au menu précédent. FRANÇAIS V SELECT Utilisez ce bouton pour confirmer votre sélection dans des menus. W MUTING (Neutralisation) Une fois l'heure TIMER ON atteinte, utilisez ce bouton pour éteindre l'appareil pendant 5 minutes. Ce bouton est également utilisé pour atténuer l'affichage. M Affichage N VOLUME Utilisez ce bouton pour couper le son. X TREBLE Utilisez ce bouton pour passer en mode de réglage du niveau des aigus. Y BASS Utilisez ces boutons tpour régler le niveau de volume. O Capteur de télécommande Utilisez ce bouton pour passer en mode de réglage du niveau des basses. Pointez la télécommande vers ce capteur lorsque vous l'utilisez. P PHONES (prise casque) Pour écouter en privé, insérez la fiche du casque dans cette prise et réglez le volume avec le bouton VOLUME. Les commandes associées sur la télécommande fonctionneront de façon similaire. 29 Affichage A B Pour commencer Le SR-L230i est fourni avec un adaptateur "60GB (color) + Photo 40/60GB" monté en usine. Pour écouter des morceaux de votre iPod sur le SR-L230i, il vous faut tout d'abord vérifier si l'adaptateur prémonté est approprié pour votre modèle d'iPod. S'il ne l'est pas, il faut le remplacer avec un adaptateur approprié, comme expliqué ci-dessous. 1. Retirez le cache de dock du SR-L230i. Maintenez les bords gauche et droit de l'adaptateur et tirez-le délicatement vers le haut. 2. Choisissez l'adaptateur de dock qui convient à votre dispositif numérique mobile iPod. "nano" pour un iPod nano. "mini" pour un iPod mini. "20GB (color) + Photo 30GB" pour iPod avec écran couleur (20 Go, 30 Go, édition spéciale U2). "60GB (color) + Photo 40GB/60GB" pour iPod avec Click Wheel (40 Go) un iPod avec écran couleur (40 Go, 60 Go) et iPod avec vidéo (60 Go). "20GB + U2" pour un iPod à molette sensitive Click Wheel (20 Go, édition spéciale U2) et iPod avec vidéo (30 Go). < Utiliser un adaptateur disponible dans le commerce pour écouter des morceaux de votre iPod muni d'un dock sur le SR-L230i.
