Allow adequate air circulation around this product. 3 Connecting Antennas CAUTION: < Switch off the power to all equipment before making connections. < Read the instructions of each component you intend to use with this unit. < Be sure to insert each plug securely. To prevent hum and noise, avoid bundling the signal interconnection cables together with the AC power cord or speaker cables. FM Indoor Antenna In an area with strong FM signals, the T-type FM antenna provided with this unit is sufficient. Extend the antenna into a "T" shape and connect the two wires at the base of the "T" to the provided matching transformer, as shown. AM Indoor Loop Antenna The high-performance AM loop antenna provided with this unit is sufficient for good reception in most areas. Snap the supplied loop antenna into the hinge on the rear of the unit, and connect the wires running out the loop antenna to the AM terminals, as shown. When you actually try listening AM programs later, you may want to turn the loop antenna on the hinge for the best possible reception. After completing connection, plug the transformer into the "FM 75" socket. Extend the top of the "T" and tune the tuner to your favorite station (see page 8). Adjust the antenna in a suitable location like a window frame or wall until the reception is best and then affix the antenna in that position using thumb tacks, push pins or any other suitable means. AM Outdoor Antenna If the AM loop antenna provided does not deliver sufficient reception (often due to being too far from the transmitter or in a concrete building, etc.), it may be necessary to use an outdoor AM antenna. Use either a high quality commercial AM antenna or, if not available, an insulated wire more than 5 m (15 feet) long, strip one end, and connect this to the terminal as shown. The antenna wire should be strung outdoors or indoors near a window. For better reception, connect the GND terminal to a reliable ground. Note: Even when using an outdoor AM antenna, do not disconnect the AM loop antenna. FM Outdoor Antenna In an area where FM signals are weak, it will be necessary to use an 75-ohm unbalanced-type outdoor FM antenna. Generally, a 3-element antenna will be sufficient; if you live in an area where the FM signals are particularly weak, it may be necessary to use one with 5 or more elements. < If you are using a 300-ohm antenna, connect it to the tuner via the supplied matching transformer. (No need for it in connecting a 75-ohm antenna.) < Disconnect the FM indoor antenna when using an outdoor antenna. D RESET switch In the following cases, function buttons may not work properly. · When the system is damaged by electrical shock. · When the power is irregular or has electrical noises. In these cases, press the RESET switch once or twice with a pencil or a ball-point pen lightly. All the settings kept in memory (such as preset stations) will be erased. A LINE OUT jack Analog 2-channel audio signal is output from this jack. Connect this jack to the TUNER input jack of the amplifier with an RCA cable. Make sure to connect : white plug q white jack (L: left channel) red plug q red jack (R: right channel) Voltage Conversion B RS-232C connector See page 14 for details. C Power cord (AC) Be sure to connect the power cord to an AC outlet which supplies the correct voltage. Hold the power plug when plugging or unplugging the power cord. Never pull or yank on the power cord. Be sure to remove the power cord from the AC outlet before repositioning the voltage converter switch. 1. Locate the voltage selector on the rear panel. 2. Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, set to the appropriate 230V or 120V position according to your area. IN NORTH AMERICA USE ONLY ON 120 V SUPPLY. 5 Unit Functions A B C D EFG H M LKJ I A B K C I H G Note: To simplify explanations, instructions in this manual refer to the names of the buttons and controls on the front panel only. Associated controls on the remote control will also operate similarly. 6 Remote Control Unit A POWER (STANDBY/ON) Press this switch to turn the unit on or standby (clock mode). When using the remote control unit, press the ON button to turn the unit on, and press the STANDBY button to turn it standby. The equipment draws a nominal amount of power from the AC outlet even with its POWER switch in the OFF position. The provided Remote Control Unit allows the unit to be operated from a distance. When operating the remote control unit, point it towards the remote sensor on the front panel of the unit. < Even if the remote control unit is operated within the effective range (5m), remote control operation may be impossible if there are any obstacles between the unit and the remote control. < If the remote control unit is operated near other products which generate infrared rays, or if other remote control devices using infrared rays are used near the unit, it may operate incorrectly. Conversely, the other products may operate incorrectly. B Numeric buttons These are used either to directly input frequency numbers or to select preset stations. C DIRECT TUNING Press this button and you can use the numeric buttons to directly input frequency numbers. D Display E TIMER Battery Installation Press this button to put the tuner under the control of a builtin timer in terms of automatically switching on power to the unit at a predetermined time and turning it off after a predetermined time period. F FM MODE This button toggles Stereo and Mono modes. G TUNING MODE 1. Remove the battery compartment cover. 2. Insert two "AA" (R6 or SUM-3) dry batteries. Make sure that the batteries are inserted with their positive "+ " and negative "_" poles positioned correctly. 3. Close the cover. Battery Replacement If the distance required between the remote control unit and main unit decreases, the batteries are exhausted. In this case replace the batteries with new ones. Precautions concerning batteries < Be sure to insert the batteries with correct positive "+" and negative "_" polarities. < Use batteries of the same type. Never use different types of batteries together. < Rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be used. Refer to the precautions on their labels. < When the remote control unit is not to be used for a long time (more than a month), remove the batteries from the remote control unit to prevent them from leaking. If they leak, wipe away the liquid inside the battery compartment and replace the batteries with new ones. < Do not heat or disassemble batteries and never dispose of old batteries by throwing them in a fire. Press this button to toggle Preset and Tuning modes. H TUNING/PRESET/TIME These buttons are used to: 1) search out stations; 2) let the unit tune in to a preset station; and 3) set a built-in clock and timer. I AM/FM Use this button to select either of the frequency bands. J MEMORY/SET This button is used either to store stations in presets or to set a built-in clock and timer. K SLEEP This button lets you set a time at the end of which this unit automatically switches itself off. L TIME SET Press this button and the MEMORY/SET button is available to set a built-in clock and timer. M Remote control sensor Receives signals from the remote control unit. Point the remote control unit at this sensor when operating the remote control unit. 7 Radio Reception FM MODE Button 1 3 4 2 1 Press the POWER switch (or ON button of the remote control unit) to turn the unit on. Pressing this button alternates between Stereo mode and Mono mode. 2 Select AM or FM by pressing the corresponding button. Stereo FM stereo broadcasts are received in stereo. The "STEREO" indicator lights on the display when an FM stereo broadcast is tuned in. < If the sound is distorted and the "STEREO" indicator light flashes, the signal is not strong enough for good stereo reception. In this case, change to MONO mode. Mono To compensate for weak FM stereo reception, select this mode. Reception will now be forced monaural, reducing unwanted noise. 3 If the PRESET indicator is lit, press the TUNING MODE button to select the manual tuning mode. The PRESET indicator disappears from the display. This button is used to change the tuning mode. 4 Select the station you want to listen to (auto selection). Hold down the TUNING button for 0.5 to 2 seconds. When a station is found, the tuning process will stop automatically. If you want to stop the tuning process, press the TUNING button. Selecting stations which cannot be tuned automatically (manual selection) Hold down (or repeatedly press) the TUNING button and release it when the station you want to listen to is found. When the TUNING button is pressed momentarily (0.5 second or less), the frequency changes by a fixed step. < "TUNED" is displayed when a broadcast is correctly tuned in. 8 Direct Tuning Sleep Timer The power can be switched off after a specified amount of time. Press the SLEEP button repeatedly until desired time appears on the display. The sleep time can be changed in steps of 10 minutes. Using this method, the required frequency can be input directly. SLEEP 90 (80, 70...or 10) The SLEEP indicator lights, and the power will be switched off 90 (80, 70 ... or 10) minutes later. Normal display: The sleep timer is off. 1 Press the DIRECT TUNING button. The frequency numbers that were displayed should go out. They will come up again if you don't go on to the next step within 5 seconds. If this happens, press the DIRECT TUNING button again. < When you set the sleep timer, the display is dimmed automatically. 2 Input the frequency of the broadcast you want to hear with the numeric keys. < If you want to check the remaining time, press the SLEEP button once. The remaining time (REST) will be displayed for 3 seconds, and then return to the normal display. Example: FM 107.5 MHz Example: AM 1000 kHz < To directly tune to FM frequencies, you need to input two digits after the decimal point. < Either in FM or AM mode, if the number you enter in the rightmost column is wrong and all the preceding numbers are correct, the tuner tunes to the nearest frequency available. 9 Preset Tuning You can store FM and AM stations from Channel 1 to 30 respectively. Manual Memory Presetting TUNING/PRESET Automatic Memory Presetting Numeric buttons MEMORY 2 1 1 Tune in a station you want to listen to (see steps 1 to 4 of page 8 or "Direct Tuning" on page 9). 1 Select AM or FM by pressing the corresponding button. 2 Press the MEMORY button. 2 Hold down the MEMORY button and release it when "AUTOSAVE" briefly appears on the display. 3 While the "MEMORY" indicator is blinking, select a preset channel to store the station using the TUNING/PRESET buttons, and then press the MEMORY button. Up to 30 of the best received stations in your area will be stored automatically. The display briefly shows "SAVE", and the station is stored in memory. You can also use the numeric buttons to select a preset channel. For instance, to select preset number 25, press "2" and "5". To select numbers less than 10, press "0" and then the number. As an example, to select number 5, press "0" and "5". (Optionally, you may press just the number "5" and then wait a few seconds.) When using the numeric buttons, the station is stored automatically without pressing the MEMORY button. To store more stations, repeat steps 1 to 3 . < If you store a new station to a channel, the station previously stored in the channel will be overwritten. 10 Setting the Clock How to select preset stations TUNING MODE TUNING/PRESET TUNING/PRESET/TIME Numeric buttons AM/FM TIME SET MEMORY/SET 1 Select AM or FM by pressing the corresponding button. 1 Press the TIME SET button once. 2 If "PRESET" indicator is not lit, press the TUNING MODE button to select the preset tuning mode. "TIME SET" blinks on the display. < You can adjust the clock even when the unit is in the standby mode. 2 Within 5 seconds, press the MEMORY/SET button. 3 Select a preset channel using the numeric buttons or the TUNING/PRESET buttons. The start time is stored in memory, and the display returns to normal. 12 Troubleshooting POWER TIMER If you experience any problems with the unit, please take a moment to look through this chart and see if you can solve the problem yourself before you call your dealer or a TEAC service center. No power e Check the connection to the AC power supply. Check and make sure the AC source is not a switched outlet and that, if it is, the switch is turned on. Make sure there is power to the AC outlet by plugging another item such as a lamp or fan. No sound e Check the connection to the amplifier. e Check the operation of the amplifier. To turn on the timer 1 After setting the start time and stop time, press the TIMER button to turn the timer on. The TIMER indicator appears on the display. 2 Tune in a station. 3 Press the POWER switch to turn the unit off (standby). Cannot listen to any station, or signal is too weak. e Make sure the antenna is properly connected. e Tune in the station properly. e If a TV is near the unit, turn it off. e Install the antenna again after relocating it to a better reception position. e An external antenna may be required. Sound is noisy. e Place the antenna as far away from a TV or a CD player as possible. e If a TV or a CD player is near the unit, turn it off. Don't forget to turn the unit off (standby), or the timer won't work. The unit will turn on with the station you selected last time. Though the broadcast is stereo, it sounds monaural. e Press the FM MODE button. Remote control doesn't work. e Press the POWER switch (or the ON button of the remote control unit) to turn the unit on. e If the batteries are dead, change the batteries. e Use remote control unit within the range (5m /15ft) and point at the front panel. e Clear obstacles between the remote control unit and the main unit. e If a strong light is near the unit, turn it off. If normal operation is not restored, unplug the power cord from the outlet and plug it again. < When you don't use the timer, press the TIMER button to turn it off. The TIMER indicator disappears from the display. Press the TIMER button again to turn it on. Maintenance If the surface of the unit gets dirty, wipe with a soft cloth or use diluted neutral cleaning liquid. Be sure to remove any fluid completely. Do not use thinner, benzine or alcohol as they may damage the surface of the unit. To check the timer setting To check the current timer settings, press the TIME SET button twice, then press the MEMORY/SET button.
