Before operating th is unit, please re ad these instructions completely. We want to thank you tor selecting this product and to welcome you to the growing family of satisfied Technics product owners around the world. We teel certain you wil! get maximum enjoyment trom this new addition to your home. Please read these operating instructions carefully, and be sure to keep them handy tor convenient reterence. These Operaling Instructions are applicable 10 models ST·500 and ST·500L. The functions which differ for the two models are indicated in the Operating Instructions. Before Use Be sure to disconnect the mains cord belore adjusting the voltage selector. Use a minus (-) screwdriver to set the voltage selector (on the rear panel) 10 the voltage setting lor Ihe area in which Ihe unit will be used. (11 Ihe power supply in your area is 117 V or 120 V, set 10 the "127 V" position.) Note that Ihis unit will be seriously damaged il Ihis setling is not made correctly. (There is no voltage selector lor some countries; the correct voltage is al ready set.) THIS TUNER/RECEIVER IS CAPABLE OF RECEIVING THE NEW AM STEREO BROADCASTS FROM THE AM BAND RADIO STATIONS. HOWEVER LlKE MANY TUNERS AND RECEIVERS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET IT WILL REPRODUCE THIS AM STEREO SIGNAL ONL Y IN AM MONO. WHICH, IN EFFECT. IS OF NO LESSER QUALITY THAN YOUR EXISTING AM MONO TUNER/RECEIVER -2 Suggestions for Safety · Use a standard electrical AC wall outlet 1. Use from an AC power source of high voltage, such as for air condItIoners, Is very dangerous. Be extremely careful not to make a connection to the elec trical outlet lor a large air conditioner or central-heating unit which uses high voltage, because there is the possibility ol lire. 2. A DC power source cannot be used. Be sure 10 check Ihe power source carelully, especially on a ship or other place where DC is used. · If water is spilled on the unit Be exlremely careful il water is spilled on Ihe unit, because a lire or serious electric shock might occur. Immediately disconnect the power cord plug, and consult with your dealer. x · Place the unit where it will be weil ventilated, and away from direct sunlight Place this unit at least 10 cm (4") away Irom wall surfaces, etc., and away Irom direct sunlight. · Connection and removal of the power cord plug 1. Wet hands are dangerous. A dangerous electric shock may result il the plug is touched by wet hands. 2. Don't pull the power cord. Always grasp the plug; never pull the cord itselt. x · Keep the unit away from heaters, etc. Heat can damage the external surfaces as weil as internal cir cuits and components. x · Never attempt to repair or reconstruct this unit A serious electric shock might occur il th is unit is repaired, disassembied or reconstructed by unauthorized persons, or il the inlernal parls are accidently touched. x · Avoid spray-type insecticides Insecticides might cause cracks or "cloudiness" in the cabinel and plastic parls ol Ihis unit. The gas used in such sprays might, moreover, be ignited suddenly. x · For families with children Never permit children to put anything, especially metal, inside th is unit. A serious electric shock or malfunclion could occur il ar ticles such as coins, needies, screwdrivers, etc. are inserted through the venlilation holes, etc. ol th is unit x · Turn oft after use II the unit is lef! lor a long time wilh the power on, this will not only shorlen its uselul operation lile, but mayalso cause other unex pected trouble. · Never use alcohol or paint thinner These and similar chemicals should never be used, because they may damage the linish. x · If trouble occurs It, during operation, the sound is interrupted or indicators no longer illuminate, or il abnormal odor or smoke is detected, im mediately disconnect the power cord plug, and contact your dealer or an Authorized Service Center. x~ .' I P9Wer 61 3 Connections Note: An outdoor antenna should be installed by a competent technician only. The indication AM used here includes both MW and LW lor Model ST-500l. FM ouldoor antenna (option) FM indoor antenna (included) (Necessary in mountainous regions, inside reinforced-concrete buildings, etc.) Tack or tape /'/ i: ,.JJ., (.~-" 75-ohm coaxial cab Ie (option) i · Attach to a wall (using tack or tape) facing in direction of best reception. · Tack should not contact internal antenna wire. · For best reception sound quality, an FM outdoor anten na is recommended. · Disconnect th is antenna if an FM outdoor anten na is in stalled. Control input terminal (CONTROL INPUT): This terminal is used for the connection of a timer for the purpose of controlling the tuner by means of an external control signal. ." ..-~ Household AC outlet AC power supply cord (included) Configuration of AC power supply cord differs according to area. Be sure to connect the AM loop antenna even when an outdoor antenna is used. --- Clamp Shield braid Center conductor Be sure the shield braid contacts the clamp. AM ouldoor antenna 5 ~ 12 m (16 ~ 40 ft.) (Necessary in mountainous regions, in side reinforced-concrete buildings, etc.) Use5 - 12m(16 - 40 ft.) of vinyl covered wire horizontally at the window. 'nyl-covered wire (option) Installalion of Ihe AM loop anlenna 1. Pay attent ion to the following points when attaching the anten na. · Do not attach it horizontally (to do so would impair recep tion). · Do not attach it close to metal surfaces (to do so would result in noise). · Do not attach it close to power cords, speaker wires, etc. (to do so would result in noise). · Do not attach it close to a tape deck (when the tape deck is being used, chirping or beeping sounds may be received). 2. Connect the AM loop antenna to the AM 3ntenna terminals located on the rear panel of the unit. When attaching the antenna to a wal!, column or rack Find the height and direction of the anten na where reception is best and then fix it vertically to the wall, rack, etc. When attaching the antenna to the unit - - - , This type of installation may cause impaired recept ion or result in signa I noise. If possible, attach the antenna to the rack, a wall, or a column. Move the anten na toward the right or left to find the point of best receptio . ll AM loop anten na (included) Column AM anten na holder (A) (included) J~ i6 ,",,~. i _,.~.I> AM loop antenna (included) -4 Front Panel Controls and Their Functions Power "stand by eb, on" switch This switch turns on and olf the secon dary circuit power only_ The unit is in the "stand-by" condition when this switch is set to the "stand by ó" position. Regardless ol the switch setting, the primary circuit is always "live" as long as the power cord is connected to an elec trical oullet. The indication AM used here includes both MW and LW tor Model sT·500L. I FM MW LW Band selectors (band) - - FM: Press th is button to listen to an FM broadcast. AM: Press this button to listen to an AM broadcast. allocation: This bulton is also used to select a Ire quency step of either 9 kHz or 10kHz. When the AM button is pressed for about 4 seconds, the AM Irequency step wil! change to 10kHz per step. (This slep is set to 9 kHz belore ship men!.) Sel to the appropriate posilion lor your locality. In order to relurn to the original Ire quency indication, press this button lor about 4 seconds again. Band selectors (band) FM: Press Ihis button to listen to an FM broadcas!. MW: Press Ih is bulton 10 listen 10 an MW broadcast allocation: This button is also used 10 select a frequency step ol either 9 kHz or 10 kHz. When the MW button is pressed lor about 4 seconds, the MW Irequency step will change to 10 kHz per step. (This step is set to 9 kHz belore shipment.) Set to the appropriate position lor your locality. In order to return to the original frequency indica tion, press this button lor about 4 seconds again. Memory indicator (memo) This indicator illuminates when the memory bulton is pressed. FM stereo indicator (stereo) This indicator automatically illuminates wh en an FM stereo broadcast is being received. LW: Press this button 10 listen 10 an LW broadcast. freq shift: When Ihe LW bullon is pressed for aboul 2 seconds during reception ol an LW broadcast, the LW Irequency will decrease by 2 kHz. So, for example, 10 receive 153 kHz, lune 10 155 kHz, and then press this button. In order to return 10 the original Irequency indica tion, press this button lor about 2 seconds again. Note: It will not illuminate il the FM mode selector is set to the monaural mode. Digital frequency display The recept ion Irequency of the FM or AM broadcast selected by using the tuning buttons or the preset-tun ing buttons is indicated by a digital-type display. ST·500 Channel display - - - - - - - ' " The channel number selected by the preseI tuning buttons is displayed. These buttons are used lor tuning to the desired broadcast station. Quartz·lock indicator (quartz loek) This indicator illuminates when tuned precisely to an FM or AM station. Memory button (memory) - - - - - " This button is used when preset memory setting ol the preset-tuning buttons is made. Signal-strength indicators (signal) _----' These indicators show the relative strength of broadcast signals being received by the anten na. The best condi tion lor reception, lor FM and AM, is when the indicators illuminate completely to the top. FM mode selector (FM mode)--..;/ This unit automatically switches into the stereo mode wh en a stereo broadcast is received. Press this button to listen in the monaural mode. The stereo indicator will not illuminate in the monaural mode. Preset-tuning buttons (1 - 16) (16 channel random preset tuning) These bultons are used to preset FM and AM broadcast Irequencies into the memory ol this unit, and are also pressed to select the desired preset Irequencies. Note: Reler 10 pages 6 and 7 for inlormation concerning preset memory. 5 Memory Presettings Importantl----------------- II this anten na is not installed, AM broadcasts will not be received, AM lOOp antenna The indication AM used here includes both MW and LW for Model ST·500l. With th is unit you may preset as many as 16 radio broadcast sta tions: FM/AM random presetting, After broadcast stations have been preset as described below, any desired station can be quick Iy and easily selected by simply touching one button Notes: 1. For automatic presetting in areas where there are Iess than 16 FM stations, the remaining channels (through channel 16) wil! be lelt empty. The empty channels can be lilled by using manual memory presetting. 2 II a new broadcasting station is preset into a channel, the broadcasting station which was previously entered in that channel will be automatically erased, 3. For AM broadcasts with extremely strong signa I transmis· sions, the frequency memorized may be slightly different Irom the correct frequency, If this occurs, use the manual control to memorize. Automatic memory presetting The FM broadcasting stations and AM broadcasting stations will be automatical!y preset to "channels" 1 through 16 lor FM and 9 through 16 lor AM, respectively, The FM broadcasting stations, MW broadcasling stations, and LW broadcasting stations will be automatically preset in "chan ...
