The information offered in this section is an overview of the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 4, Replacement Procedures. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the proper procedure please refer to the Maintenance Manual through the Toshiba Service and Support Website before you proceed.
This section explains how to remove Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). It may not be necessary to remove all the FRUs in order to replace one. The chart is a guide to which FRUs need to be removed in order to remove others. The section numbers on the chart refer to the sections in the Maintenance Manual, Chapter 4. Always start by removing the battery pack, next, optional items such as the optional PC card and optional memory module, then follow the line on the chart to determine which FRU you must remove next in order to repair the one you think is causing the computer to operate improperly.

To remove the battery pack, follow the steps below. 1. Turn the computer upside down. 2. Slide the battery latch to release it, then pull the battery cover slightly forward and lift it out. 3. Lay the battery cover upside down. Push the latches to the outside and lift out the battery pack.
NOTE: For environmental reasons, do not throw away a spent battery pack. Please return the spent battery packs to Toshiba.
To remove the PC card, follow the steps below. 1. Release the PC card lock located under the PC card slot. 2. Pull out the eject button next to the PC card you want to remove and press the button to pop the card out slightly. 3. Grasp the PC card and remove it.

To remove the keyboard, follow the steps below. 1. Open the display panel. 2. Lift out the keyboard brace. 3. Remove one M2x4 screw and lift off the keyboard metal brace. 4. Lift the keyboard out and lay it face up on the palm rest. Be careful not to apply pressure to the keyboard cable. 5. Remove one M2.5x4 black screw and lift off the keyboard top cover between the speekers, releasing six latches. 6. Disconnect the keyboard cable from PJ11 on the system board and remove the keyboard.
To remove the expansion memory, make sure the computer is in boot mode, then follow the steps below. 1. Turn the computer upside down. 2. Remove two M2x4 black screws and lift off the expansion memory slot cover. 3. Gently press out on the latches. One end of the expansion memory will pop up. 4. Grasp the expansion memory and pull it out.
CAUTION: Do not touch the connectors on the expansion memory or on the computer. Debris on the connectors may cause memory access problems.

To remove the HDD, follow the steps below. 1. Turn the computer upside down. 2. Remove one M2.5x6 black screw and lift off the HDD slot cover. 3. Remove one M2.5x4 black screw securing the HDD in the HDD slot. 4. Grasp the HDD bracket handle and pull it forward to disconnect and take out the HDD. 5. Remove four M3x4 flat-head screws from the HDD bracket and lift out the HDD.
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the HDD bracket except when replacement of the HDD is required.
To install the HDD, follow the steps below. 1. Seat the HDD in the HDD bracket and secure it with four M3x4 flat-head screws. 2. Insert the HDD into the HDD slot and press to ensure a firm connection. 3. Secure the HDD with one M2.5x4 screw. 4. Seat the HDD slot cover and secure two latches. 5. Secure the HDD slot cover with one M2.5x6 black screw.
To remove the modem board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove one M2x4 screw and two M2x3 screws that fastens the modem board. 2. Lift up the right side of the modem board, exercising care about the connector PJ305 indicated by dotted lines in the figure, and remove the modem board. 3. Disconnect the modem cable from PJ2 on the modem board.
NOTE: Referring to the removing and installing the modem jack with the modem cable, please see section on HDD/Battery Board.

To remove the top cover and display assembly, follow the steps below. 1. Turn the computer upside down and remove the following twelve screws: · Four M2.5x20 black screws · Two M2.5x6 black screws · Five M2.5x4 black screws (from the battery slot and back of the computer) · One M2x16 black screw 2. Turn the computer right side up and open the display. 3. Remove two M2.5x20 black screws and one M2.5x4 black screw securing the top cover. 4. Disconnect the following five cables: · LCD cable from PJ4 · FL cable from PJ5 · Membrane switch cable from PJ10 · Left speaker cable from PJ303 · Right speaker cable from PJ304 5. Lift up the back and left side of the top cover and display assembly about 1 cm to release the left latch on the front (arrow and ). Push to the right (arrow ) to clear the volume control dial. 6. Rotate the top cover and display assembly forward to release the right latch and remove it (arrow ). 7. Remove the plastic stud on the system board.

To remove the HDD/battery board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove the modem jack and cable, if necessary. 2. Remove tape securing the insulator covering the HDD cable. 3. Push the insulator out from a tongue on the HDD/battery board to clear the battery cable. 4. Disconnect the following two cables from the connectors on the HDD/ battery board: · HDD cable from PJ750 · Battery cable from PJ753 5. Remove one M2.5x6 screw and the plastic brace. 6. Lift up the HDD/battery board and disconnect the sensor cable from PJ754 on the HDD/battery board.

To remove the FDD, follow the steps below. 1. Disconnect the FDD flexible cable from PJ15 on the system board. 2. Remove one M2.5x4 screw and the modem stud securing the FDD and remove the FDD, exercising care about the tongue on the front side of the computer body. 3. Remove four M2.5x3 black screws securing the FDD to the FDD case and separate the FDD from its case. 4. Disconnect the FDD flexible cable from the FDD.

To remove the CD-ROM drive, follow the steps below. 1. Disconnect the CD-ROM flexible cable form PJ301 on the system board. 2. Remove one M2.5x4 screw securing the CD-ROM drive. 3. Slide out the CD-ROM drive. 4. Remove two M2x6 screws securing the CD-ROM connector board. 5. Separate the CD-ROM connector board and CD-ROM connector brace from the CD-ROM drive. 6. Disconnect the CD-ROM flexible cable from PJ760 on the CD-ROM connector board. 7. Remove two M2x3 silver screws securing the side brace on the CD-ROM drive and separate the site brace.

To remove the RTC battery and backup battery, follow the steps below. 1. Lift up the insulation sheet covering the RTC and backup batteries. 2. Remove tape securing the RTC battery cable and backup battery cable. 3. Disconnect the RTC battery cable from PJ702 on the sound board. 4. Disconnect the backup battery cable from PJ701 on the sound board. 5. Lift out the RTC battery and backup battery.
WARNING: If you replace the RTC battery or backup battery, be sure to use only batteries recommended by Toshiba. Installation of the wrong battery can cause the battery to explode or otherwise cause damage.
To remove the sound board, follow the steps below. 1. Disconnect the following cables from the connections on the sound board: · Sound cable from PJ700 · Backup cable from PJ701 · RTC battery cable from PJ702 2. Remove one M2.5x4 screw. 3. Lift up the left sound board.
To remove the sensor board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove one M2x4 screw. 2. Lift up the sensor board. 3. Disconnect the sensor cable from PJ754 on the sensor board.

To remove the membrane switch, follow the steps below. 1. Remove two M2x4 screws securing the membrane switch. 2. Lift up the membrane switch cover. 3. Lift up the membrane switch.

To remove the system board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove the insulator and disconnect the sound cable from PJ700 on the sound board. 2. Remove seven screws securing the system board and PC card slot cover as follows: · Two M2.5x4 flat-head screws · Four M2.5xscrews · One M2.5x6 screw 3. Rotate out the system board from the front side to clear the USB port opening. Take out the PC card slot cover. 4. Disconnect the following cables from the front and back side of the system board: · HDD/battery cable from PJ300 (front) · Battery power cable from PJ501 (front) · Sound cable from PJ302 (back)

To remove the cooling fan, follow the steps below. 1. Remove tape covering PJ1 and the fan cable. 2. Disconnect the fan cable from PJ1 on the system board. 3. Remove two M2.5x3 silver flat-head screws securing the cooling fan. 4. Take out the cooling fan from the system board.
To remove the speakers, follow the steps below. 1. Remove two M2x4 flat-head screws securing each speaker. 2. Remove the tape securing speaker cables, and lift out the speaker.

To remove the display mask, follow the steps below. 1. Remove two mask seals at the hinges to expose two screws securing the display mask. 2. Remove two M2.5x6 screws that were covered by the mask seals. 3. A total of 22 snaps secure the display mask. Carefully insert your fingers between the mask and the LCD panel and pry open the snaps. Start with the six snaps at the bottom of the display mask. 4. Continue unsnapping the display mask along the sides (five snaps on each side), and the top (six snaps).

To remove the DSTN FL inverter board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove the two M2.5x6 screws securing the FL inverter board. 2. Carefully lift up the FL inverter board and disconnect the FL cable from CN1 and the HV cable from CN2.
To remove the TFT FL inverter board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove the tape securing the HV cable 2. Remove one M2x4 screw securing the FL inverter board. 3. Carefully lift up the FL inverter board and disconnect the FL cable from CN1 and the HV cable from CN2.

To remove the DSTN LCD module and contrast board, follow the steps below. 1. Remove the four M2.5x6 screws securing the LCD module. 2. Rotate the LCD module from the right to the left out of the LCD cover. Be careful not to apply pressure to the LCD cable. 3. Remove one M2.5x6 screw securing the contrast board. 4. Disconnect the contrast board cable from the contrast board and lift out the board.

To remove the 12.1" TFT LCD module, follow the steps below. 1. Remove the four M2.5x6 screws securing the LCD module. 2. Rotate the LCD module from the right to the left out of the LCD cover. Be careful not to apply pressure to the LCD cable.
To remove the 14.1" TFT LCD module, follow the steps below. 1. Remove four mask seals to expose four screws securing the LCD module. 2. Remove the four M2x5 screws securing the LCD module. 3. Rotate the LCD module from the front side to the back side out of the LCD cover. Be careful not to apply pressure to the flexible cable. 4. Disconnect the LCD cable from the LCD module.

To remove the model 13.0 (Make: SHARP) DSTN FL, follow the steps below. 1. Fold out twenty tabs on the sides of the LCD module along the bezel. 2. Remove six screws securing the back plate to the LCD module. 3. Remove the back plate off the LCD module. 4. Remove tape securing the FL cable to the classis of the LCD module. 5. Open the lamp reflector sheet covering the FL and lift up the FL.

To install the model 13.0 (Make: SHARP) DSTN FL, follow the steps below. 1. Seat the FL in the FL slot along the groove and lay the lamp reflector sheet in place. Make sure that the HV cable is completely laid in along the groove of the chassis, and turned at the chassis hooks. 2. Adhere tape on the chassis rib first and fold it to the side of the chassis. 3. Seat the back plate on the LCD module. 4. Secure the back plate with six screws. 5. Fold back twenty tabs along the bezel on the side of the LCD module.

To remove the model 12.1 (Make: DTI) TFT FL, follow the steps below.
CAUTION: Do not disassemble or modify the FLs that are in normal operating condition. Otherwise, there is the danger of electric shock, and combustion of and damage to the circuits and parts by disassembly.
1. Remove insulation sheets 1 and 2. Carefully remove insulation sheet 1 because it will be reused.
NOTE: Observe the local regulations in disposing of waste FLs.

Turn the LCD module over face down and remove the four following screws. · Two M2.6x3.8 screws · Two M2.6x2.8 black screws Fold out the tabs of the LCD frame. Remove the LCD frame, exercising care about the latches. Disconnect the FPC connector. Remove one M2x2 black screw that secures the PCB. Remove the cell with the PCB, exercising care about the doublecoated tape. Remove the two prism sheets from the backlight.

CAUTION: Do not touch the prism sheets with a bare hand because they could be easily damaged. Be careful not to expose them to dirt or other foreign matter.
Remove the photoconductor from the lamp reflector in the arrow direction. 10. Remove the sheet that secures the cable. 11. While paying attention to the latches on both sides of the FL, remove the FL from the frame. 9.
CAUTION: The FL is secured with doublecoated tape, and must be removed carefully not to subject it to deformation.

To remove the Model 12.1 (Make: SHARP) TFT FL, follow the steps below. 1. Turn the LCD module upside down and remove the insulation and the polyimide tape securing the FL cover. When you remove the insulation, be careful not to remove the filament tape securing the LCD segment-driver circuit board to the plastic frame. 2. Remove three long flat-head screws securing the LCD frame.
CAUTION: When you remove the FL, be careful not to let any dust or other foreign matter contaminate the LCD panel. Any contamination can affect the performance of the unit.
3. Release three latches securing the LCD frame.

CAUTION: When you remove the LCD frame, be careful to hold the glass panel in place to prevent it from falling.

To remove the model 14.1 (Make: Samsung) TFT FL, follow the steps below. 1. Remove tape on the bottom side and four flat-head screws on the right and left side of the chassis.
CAUTION: Exercise care during FL removal not to let dust or other foreign matter into the LCD panel. Foreign matter is detrimental to the display quality of the LCD.
2. Release eight hooks (two each on the right and left side and four on the bottom side) and remove chassis from the LCD module starting from the bottom end. Turn the LCD module over face down and remove two M2x2.5 flat-head screws securing the back cover to the LCD module.

CAUTION: When you release latches on the mold frame, be careful not to apply pressure to the FL. The FL can be damaged easily.
4. Turn the LCD module over face up and press the top of the mold frame hooks to release latches on the mold frame and to remove back cover. Pull the HV cable out of it groove, lay back the plastic reflector sheet and remove the FL from its groove.

To remove the DSTN LCD cable, contrast board cable and FL cable, follow the steps below. 1. Remove two mask seals. 2. Remove four pieces of tape securing the contrast board cable and DSTN LCD cable to the LCD cover. 3. Remove the following to remove the FL cable metal brace with a gasket and DSTN LCD cable metal brace and to separate the top cover from the body: · Three M2.5x4 screws · Four M2.5x6 screws 4. Lift up and remove the plastic cable brace, pressing against the back of the top cover to release latches. 5. Remove the tape securing the DSTN LCD cable and FL cable to the back of the top cover. 6. Pull out and remove the DSTN LCD cable and FL cable with the gasket.
