Engineered with the latest technology, the computer-controlled integration of an Active Torque Control 4WD system§, Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) offers immeasurable driving satisfaction by giving you supreme control of the road. The Active Torque Control 4WD system uses an electromagnetically controlled coupling to optimise torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, continuously switching between front wheel- and 4WD control mode. Up to 45% of the power can be distributed to the rear wheels depending on road conditions, and a variety of sophisticated sensors monitor everything that's going on with the vehicle, reacting quickly by applying the appropriate torque ratio, resulting in improved handling, excellent fuel consumption and enhanced safety benefits. In addition to Active Torque Control, the driver has the option to lock the torque distribution, for off-road purposes, using the 4WD Lock button on the dashboard. This enables the vehicle to get unstuck if an individual wheel loses grip. The VSC system works with the Electric Power Steering (EPS) to add steering torque assistance to the conventional stability control system. It senses understeer or oversteer and assists the driver by making the correct steering action easier and an incorrect action more difficult. It complements features like Anti-lock Brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist and Traction Control. With RAV4's Integrated Active Drive System, all these systems work together. Understeering correction To counteract understeer, which causes the front of the vehicle to drift away, Integrated Active Drive System supplies more power to the rear wheels, provides steering torque assistance to keep you on track, and enhances acceleration. RAV4's new platform and new suspension enables excellent driving comfort and handling performance. Increased tyre grip and steadier cornering, along with significantly less vibration, are achieved through a double-wishbone shaped rear suspension and MacPherson struts in the front suspension, which have been comprehensively redesigned in every detail. In addition, the shock absorber of the rear suspension is positioned diagonally under the floor resulting in a 230 mm wider luggage area. The advanced new suspension combines with the Integrated Active System to offer meticulous handling and matchless ride comfort ­ no matter what the road conditions.
