For the most updated information, visit: http://www.usr.com/support Prepare for installation Note: Your product number is 2216. It is very important that you have your serial number written down before you install the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter. You can find your serial number on the label of the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter and on the side of the package. If you ever need to contact our Technical Support department, you will need this number to receive assistance. Note: Be sure to find out what letter your CD-ROM drive uses before you begin installing your new product. You will need to know this to properly install your software. Note: During the Installation procedure, you may be prompted for your Windows Operating System CD-ROM. Make sure you have that available in case you need it. Step 1. Install your software and drivers* Turn on your computer. Insert the Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. Note: If the Choose Setup Language window appears, select your preferred language and click OK. If your CD-ROM does not automatically launch, click Windows Start, Run, type D:\setup (or the appropriate letter of your CD-ROM drive), and click OK. Read the License Agreement and click Yes to accept the terms. If you do not accept the terms of the agreement, click No and the software installation will be terminated. Note: You will need to install this Installation CD-ROM on all the PCs you plan to wirelessly network together. 1 Click Software and then click Install Wireless Card Utility and Drivers. Follow the on-screen instructions. When you are prompted to reboot your computer, select No, I will restart my computer later and click Finish. Close the Installation CD Graphic User Interface (GUI). When your desktop returns, shut down your computer. *A "Digital Signature Not Found" screen may appear during your driver installation. Click Yes. Windows will verify that your network device is properly installed. Step 2. Install the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter* Make sure your computer is turned off. Remove the computer's cover. With the computer turned off, locate an available PCI slot and remove the slot cover screw or clip. Remove the slot cover and insert the PCI Adapter. PCI slots are typically white plastic lined with metal and are 3.5 inches long. Secure the PCI Adapter with the previously removed screw or clip. Replace the computer's cover and turn on your computer. Note: It can be tricky getting the PCI Adapter into the PCI slot. You may need to remove the antenna in order to place the PCI Adapter into the PCI slot. Use firm pressure to seat the PCI Adapter properly. If you experience any problems inserting the PCI Adapter, try inserting it in a different PCI slot. Note: If you are prompted at any time for your Windows Operating System CD-ROM, remove the U.S. Robotics Installation CD-ROM and insert your Windows CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. When all of the files are copied, remove the Windows CD-ROM, and reinsert the U.S. Robotics Installation CD-ROM. Step 3. Configure the basic connection settings Congratulations! You have finished installing your hardware and your software! The 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter is set to Auto Detect mode by default, which allows it to scan for and connect to an existing wireless network or other wireless networking products in the area. You should now see a small icon for the Configuration Utility in the system tray by your clock. The Configuration Utility is used to change or verify the configuration information that relates to your 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter. The Configuration Utility icon will be colored to indicate the status of your wireless network: red for disconnected, yellow for connected with poor quality, and green for connected with good quality. 2 You must now configure each computer that has a 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter in order to share Internet connectivity, files, and a printer. Double-click the utility icon to launch the Configuration Utility. Refer to the "22 Mbps Wireless Configuration Utilities" section in the User Guide on the Installation CD-ROM for detailed configuration information. 802.11b ad hoc mode is used for peer-to-peer network configurations. Infrastructure mode is used to add a Wireless Access Point to the wireless network configuration for extended range and increased number of computers that can join the network. Auto Detect mode allows the Configuration Utility to search for a wireless network and automatically connect to it. Each wireless product in the wireless network must have the same mode selected within the Configuration Utility. The 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapters are set to Auto Detect by default. Register your product · At the Installation CD-ROM interface, click the Support link. Follow the on-screen instructions to register your modem and to view the warranty information. If the Installation CDROM interface does not run automatically, click Windows Start and then click Run. In the "Run" dialog box, type D:\setup.exe. If your CD-ROM drive uses a different letter, type that letter in place of "D." Or register your product online at http://www.usr.com/productreg · 3 Advanced Options Enabling File and Print Sharing To enable file and print sharing over the wireless network, perform the following steps on the computers with a 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter installed. Windows 98 and Me Users: Click Windows Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. Double-click Network and then click the File and Print Sharing button. Select both boxes in the File and Print Sharing window and then click OK. File and print sharing is now enabled. Note: If your computer is connected directly to the Internet, there is a security risk if you are not using a firewall program or some form of hardware firewall. Windows 2000 and XP Users: File and print sharing are automatically enabled in Windows 2000 and Windows XP in Adminstrator mode. Enabling Internet Sharing To enable Internet sharing over the wireless network, perform the following steps on each machine that has a 22 Mbps Wireless PC Card or PCI Adapter installed. Windows 98 Users: Click Windows Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. Double-click Add/ Remove Programs and then click the Windows Setup tab. Select Internet Tools and then click Details. Select Internet Connection Sharing and click OK. Click Apply, and the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard will launch. Click Next, select the 22 Mbps Wireless PC Card or PCI Adapter to connect to the Internet, and click Next. Click Next to create a Client Configuration Disk, insert a blank disk into the 3.5-inch disk drive, and click OK. This disk will be used to configure Internet sharing in Windows 98. Click Finish to complete the configuration of Internet sharing. You will then need to restart your computer. Windows 2000 and XP Users: There must be two network adapters or one network adapter and one modem installed in order to use Internet sharing. Click Windows Start, Settings, and then Network and Dial-up Connections. Right-click the LAN connection used to connect to the Internet and click Properties. Click the Sharing tab. Click the box in this window to enable Internet sharing and click Apply. Right-click the LAN connection in the list and click Properties. Select Internet Protocol and click Properties. Click the DNS tab, write down the DNS address that is listed, and return to the Networking and Dial-up Connections window. Right-click the wireless adapter in the list and click Properties. Select Internet Protocol and click Properties. Click the DNS tab and enter the same DNS address as the one listed under the LAN connection. Windows Me Users: Click Windows Start, Settings, and then Control Panel. Double-click Add/ Remove Programs and then click the Windows Setup tab. Select Communications and then click Details. Select Internet Connection Sharing and click OK. Click Apply and the Home Networking Wizard will launch. Click Next and then select Yes this computer uses the following. Select the direct connection to the Internet from the drop-down menu and click Next. When prompted, create a Home Networking Setup disk to be used for the configuration of Internet sharing in Windows 98, and Me. After you have created the disk, click Next. Click Finish to complete the configuration of Home Networking. You will then need to restart your computer. 4 Troubleshooting My computer does not recognise the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter. Possible Solution: ·The 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter may not be fully inserted into the PCI slot. You can also try installing the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter into a different PCI slot. ·Your PCI slot may not be configured correctly. To configure your PCI slot, contact your computer manufacturer. I am unable to communicate with an Access Point or Wireless Router. Possible Solution: Be sure that each 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter that you want to connect to the wireless network is set to Infrastructure mode within the Configuration Utility. If your 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapters are not set to Infrastructure mode, they will not be able to communicate with an Access Point or Wireless Adapter. Possible Solution: Ensure that the Access Point Configuration Utility is installed for your 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point and that the Configuration Utility is installed and functioning for your 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapters. Possible Solution: Ensure that you are contacting the correct 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point by verifying the MAC address. Possible Solution: Ensure that the correct password and encryption option are being used. If you changed the settings in the configuration of the 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point, you must also change the settings of every 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter attached to this network. The settings of the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapters must match the new settings of the 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point. If you are still experiencing difficulties, reset all of your Wireless Access Points and wireless network adapters to the default settings and try again. Possible Solution: Ensure that you can connect to the Wireless Access Point and that the BSSID shows the MAC address of the Wireless Access Point you want to communicate with. Possible Solution: If you are not using a U.S. Robotics Wireless Access Point, ensure that you can connect to the Access Point and that the preamble mode is set to Long. I received a message that my computer shares a name with another computer on the wireless network. Possible Solution: Each computer on the wireless network must have a different name. Refer to your computer's documentation to see how to change the name of your computer. 5 I am unable to establish a wireless connection with my 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter. Possible Solution: Verify that the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter is properly installed. Make sure that the antenna of the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter is firmly connected to the antenna port of the PCI Adapter. If you continue to experience problems, uninstall the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter and repeat the installation procedure. Possible Solution: If you are attempting a peer-to-peer connection, verify that each wireless adapter is set to 802.11 ad hoc mode. If you are using a Wireless Access Point, verify that each wireless adapter is set to Infrastructure mode. My 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter does not see my Wireless Access Point in the list when I scan for it. Possible Solution: If you create a wireless connection with the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter but are experiencing poor link quality, check the positioning of the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter. Long distances, multiple floors, or steel or concrete walls can diminish the link quality. If possible, reposition the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter to reduce the effect of any of these obstacles. In addition, check any physical connections between the Wireless Access Point and your modem, router, hub, LAN, or switch. I accidentally clicked Cancel during the software installation procedure for the 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter. Possible Solution: Remove and reinsert the Installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Repeat the software installation procedure. The software installation procedure did not begin when I inserted the Installation CD-ROM. Possible Solution: Some programs may keep the autolaunch feature of the Installation CD-ROM from beginning. Close any open applications and reinsert the Installation CD-ROM. If the Installation CD-ROM interface does not run automatically, click Windows Start and then click Run. In the "Run" dialog box, type D:\setup.exe. If your CD-ROM drive uses a different letter, type that letter in place of "D." I received a message that my 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point or my computer shares an IP address with another computer on the wireless network. Possible Solution: Each computer and 22 Mbps Wireless Access Point on the wireless network must have a different IP address. Refer to your computer's documentation to see how to change the IP address on your computer. 6 The 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter cannot communicate with other computers linked via Ethernet in the Infrastructure configuration. Possible Solution: ·Ensure that each computer in the wireless network is powered on. ·Ensure that each 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter is configured on the same operating radio channel. If the IDs are different, change each 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter within the LAN to the new radio channel. ·Ensure TCP/IP is installed. Ensure you are a part of the same domain or workgroup. Ensure that you are automatically obtaining the IP address or that you have a correct IP address and subnet mask. Reset the Wireless Access Point and restart the computer that has a connectivity issue. ·Ensure that you have some files available for sharing. Soluzione possibile: Assicurarsi che ogni 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter che si desidera collegare alla rete wireless sia impostato sulla modalità Infrastructure (Infrastruttura) nell'utilità di configurazione. Se i 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter non sono impostati sulla modalità Infrastructure, non saranno in grado di comunicare con un Access Point o un Wireless Adapter. De meest recente informatie vindt u op: http://www.usr.com/support De installatie voorbereiden Opmerking: Uw productnummer is 2216. Het is belangrijk dat u uw serienummer opschrijft voordat u de 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter installeert. U vindt uw serienummer op het etiket van de 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter en op de zijkant van de verpakking. U hebt dit nummer nodig wanneer u contact opneemt met onze technische ondersteuning. Opmerking: Vergeet niet de stationsaanduiding van uw cd-rom-station te achterhalen voordat u met de installatie begint. U hebt deze aanduiding nodig om de software goed te kunnen installeren. Opmerking: Het kan zijn dat u tijdens de installatie de cd van uw Windowsbesturingssysteem nodig hebt. Zorg er dus voor dat u deze bij de hand hebt. Stap 1. De software en de stuurprogramma's installeren* Schakel uw computer in. Plaats de installatie-CD in uw CD-ROM drive. Opmerking: Selecteer de gewenste taal als het venster Choose Setup Language (Taal voor de setup kiezen) verschijnt en klik op OK. Als de cd niet automatisch gestart wordt, klikt u in Windows op Start, Uitvoeren en typt u D:\setup (typ in plaats van D een andere letter als dat de aanduiding van uw cd-rom-station is). Klik daarna op OK. Lees de licentieovereenkomst en klik op Yes om de voorwaarden te accepteren. Klik op No als u de voorwaarden niet kunt accepteren. De installatie van de software wordt dan beëindigd. Opmerking: U dient deze installatie-cd uit te voeren op alle computers die u draadloos op elkaar aan wilt sluiten. 45 Klik op Software en daarna op Install Wireless Card Utility and Drivers (Hulpprogramma en stuurprogramma's voor de Wireless Card installeren). Volg de aanwijzingen op het scherm. Als u gevraagd wordt uw computer opnieuw op te starten, selecteert u No, I will restart my computer later (Nee, ik start de computer later opnieuw op) en klikt u op Finish (Voltooien). Sluit de Graphic User Interface (GUI) van de installatie-cd. Schakel de computer uit wanneer het bureaublad afgebeeld wordt. *Wellicht verschijnt er tijdens de installatie van de stuurprogramma's een waarschuwing dat de digitale handtekening niet gevonden is. Klik op Ja. Windows controleert nu of uw netwerkapparaat goed geïnstalleerd is. Stap 2. De 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter installeren* Zorg ervoor dat uw computer uitgeschakeld is. Verwijder de kap van de computer. Schakel de computer uit, kijk of er een PCI-aansluiting beschikbaar is en verwijder de clip of de schroef die de aansluiting bedekt. Verwijder de bedekking en plaats de PCI Adapter. PCI-aansluitingen zijn over het algemeen van wit plastic met een metalen omlijning en ongeveer acht centimeter lang. Beveilig de PCI Adapter met de zojuist verwijderde schroef of clip. Plaats de kap weer op uw computer en schakel de computer in. Opmerking: Het kan soms lastig zijn om de PCI Adapter aan te sluiten op de PCIaansluiting. Soms moet u de antenne verwijderen om de PCI Adapter in de PCIaansluiting te kunnen plaatsen. Druk stevig om ervoor te zorgen dat de PCI Adapter goed vastzit. Als er problemen optreden tijdens het aansluiten van de PCI Adapter, kunt u een andere PCI-aansluiting proberen. Opmerking: Als u tijdens de installatie gevraagd wordt om de cd van uw Windowsbesturingssysteem, haalt u de installatie-cd van U.S. Robotics uit uw station en plaatst u uw Windows-cd in het cd-rom-station. Als alle bestanden gekopieerd zijn, haalt u de Windows-cd uit het station en plaatst u de installatie-cd van U.S. Robotics er weer in. Stap 3. De standaard verbindingsinstellingen configureren Uw hardware en uw software zijn nu geïnstalleerd! De 22 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter is standaard ingesteld op de modus Auto Detect, zodat de adapter naar een bestaand draadloos netwerk of andere draadloze netwerkproducten in het gebied kan zoeken en er een verbinding mee tot stand kan brengen. 46
