Installing
Installation is a quick, three-step process:
Install the software Connect and calibrate the scanner Print guides and install other software from the CD
STEP 1: INSTALL THE SOFTWARE
Note: You must install the software before connecting the scanner to your computer. Otherwise, the correct driver software for your scanner will not be installed and it may not work properly. Note: If you intend to use the scanner with your laptop, as well as your office computer, make sure to install the software on both computers. To install the software: 1. Start Microsoft Windows and make sure no other applications are running. 2. Insert the CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
The CD automatically starts.
STEP 1: INSTALL THE SOFTWARE
5
Note: If the CD does not start, check the following: Make sure the CD drive's door is completely shut.
Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop. Doubleclick the icon for your CD-ROM drive. From the list of files on the CD, double-click the file named START32.EXE.
3. On the Installation Menu, select Install ScanSoft PaperPort.
4. On the PaperPort 9.0 Welcome window, click Next. 5. On the License Agreement window, read the ScanSoft license agreement. If you accept the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next. 6. On the Customer Information window, accept the current values or enter new information, and then click Next. 7. On the Setup Type window, click Next. 8. Click Install to begin the installation.

10. At the Installshield Wizard Completed window, click Finish. If a message window opens instructing you to restart your computer, click Restart. 11. On the Installation Menu, select Install Scanner Driver.
STEP 1: INSTALL THE SOFTWARE
7
A window then appears offering two choices for installation: Full Feature Install and Custom Install.
12. Choose the option you want. Full Feature Install--This is the recommended installation. It installs the OneTouch 4.0 software that provides the necessary driver software for the scanner. It also installs scanning interfaces for Twain and Microsoft's Windows Image Acquisition. Installing this option means that you can use several different methods to scan, as explained in this User Guide. Custom Install--This option is recommended for advanced users only. It offers installation of the driver software for Twain and OneTouch 4.0, and also for Twain Only. See "Custom Installation" on page 11 for the steps to install using the Custom Install option.

STEP 1: INSTALL THE SOFTWARE
11
CUSTOM INSTALLATION
Custom installation is recommended for advanced users only. Note: If you select a custom installation and later decide to upgrade to a Full Feature Installation or one of the other Custom Installations, you must first uninstall the scanner driver. See the steps on page 12. To install using the Custom Install: 1. Choose Custom Install as your choice of installation. A window appears with the choice of Scanner Driver options.
Note: If a scanner driver option is "greyed out" it is not available. The options are:
OneTouch 4.0 with TWAIN (Full Install)--This is the recommended selection. When you select this option, the scanner gets the full functionality of OneTouch 4.0 in addition to the TWAIN drivers. Selecting this option is the same as selecting the "Full Feature Install" in the Driver Selection window, except for selecting the Color Space.
12
VISIONEER STROBE XP 300 SCANNER USER'S GUIDE

STEP 1: INSTALL THE SOFTWARE
13
1. Remove the scanner from the system by going to the Windows Control Panel, double-click the System icon, select the Hardware tab, and click the Device Manager button. In the list of devices, select Imaging Devices, and select your Visioneer Strobe XP 300. Choose Uninstall from the Action menu. 2. Unplug the USB cable. 3. STEP 2: CONNECT AND CALIBRATE THE SCANNER
The Visioneer Strobe XP 300 scanner connects to any available USB port. Check your computer's manual for USB port locations. Note: You can connect the scanner to your computer while the computer is running. You do not have to shut down your computer. To connect your Visioneer Strobe XP 300 scanner: 1. Plug the AC adaptor cable into the power jack on scanner, and then plug the AC adapter into an electrical outlet. 2. Plug the USB cable into the USB port on your scanner and then plug the other end into any USB port on your computer. Connection to a USB 2.0 High Speed port provides optimum performance, but your scanner can also connect to a USB 1.1 port.
USB
The USB symbol identifies the location of the USB port on your computer. If the plug does not attach easily, make sure that you are plugging it in correctly. Do not force the plug into the connection. Note: You can also connect the scanner to a USB hub. If you use a USB hub, it must have its own power supply plugged into an electrical outlet.
STEP 2: CONNECT AND CALIBRATE THE SCANNER
15
Your computer recognizes that a scanner has been plugged into the USB port and automatically configures its driver database with the appropriate software to run the scanner. 3. For Windows XP users only, the Found New Hardware Wizard opens. Click Next to proceed. For Windows 2000 users only, the Digital Signature Not Found dialog box appears. Click Yes to continue. The Calibration window appears.
To calibrate the scanner: 1. Close the scanner's paper return so the calibration paper will feed straight through the scanner.
16
VISIONEER STROBE XP 300 SCANNER USER'S GUIDE
2. Insert the calibration page into the page feed. The scanner grabs the paper and feeds it through the scanner.
The scanner will automatically pass the sheet back and forth several times. Do not remove the sheet until calibration is finished. 3. When calibration is complete, remove the sheet and replace it in its plastic bag. Do not discard the calibration sheet. You may need it periodically to calibrate the scanner to keep it operating at peak performance. 4. For Windows XP users only, click Finish on the Found New Hardware Wizard window.
STEP 2: CONNECT AND CALIBRATE THE SCANNER
17
Do not proceed until you receive a message that your computer has found the new hardware, or updated the driver database. If your computer is running Windows XP, you will see the following message.
5. Now click OK on the "Complete the installation by connecting your hardware" window.
18
VISIONEER STROBE XP 300 SCANNER USER'S GUIDE

SCANNING ON THE GO
Because your scanner can draw power from the computer through its Mini-USB cable, you can use your scanner on an airplane, at a remote job site, in your car, or anywhere else where an electric outlet is not available.
Connect the scanner to your laptop with the Mini-USB cable. The scanner will draw its power from the laptop battery.
If the laptop battery is low, or if electric power is available, you can also use the AC Power Adapter with the laptop.
Note: If electrical power is available, use the power adapter, even with your laptop computer. The scanner will scan faster when connected to an electrical wall outlet, and it won't drain the laptop's battery.
SET UP YOUR SCANNER
25
CONFIGURE THE AC POWER ADAPTER
The AC Power Adapter can be configured to operate with a variety of electric outlet plug configurations that are used in various countries. The three plug adapters that you received with your scanner are interchangeable on the AC Power Adapter.
To replace the AC Power Adapter plug: 1. Press down on the latch that holds the plug in place. Then slide the plug forward and out of the Power Adapter.
2. Slide one of the plug adapters into the empty slot on the Power Adapter until it snaps into place.

SCANNING BASICS
Note: Always remove any staples or paper clips from documents before inserting them into the scanner. Staples and paper clips can jam the feed mechanism and scratch the internal components.
To scan the single side of a page, insert the paper face down. To scan both sides of a page (called duplex scanning), either side can be face down because both sides are scanned.
ADJUST THE PAPER GUIDES
The Paper Guides on the Page Feed adjust to the width of the item you're scanning.
To adjust the Paper Guides slide them to left or right until they match the width of the item you're scanning.
SCANNING BASICS
27
SCANNING THIN PAPER ITEMS
The two transparent sleeves that you receive with your scanner are for scanning thin paper items, such as credit cards receipts, newspaper articles, and retail receipts. Generally you should use the transparent sleeves for paper items on paper stock that is less than 20-lb. To scan a thin paper item: 1. Slide the thin paper item into the appropriate sleeve.
2. Adjust the scanner's Paper Guides for the size of the sleeve.
3. Insert the sleeve with the item inside it. Insert face down to scan a single side. To scan both sides, either side can be face up.

SCAN USING AUTOLAUNCH
When you insert an item into the scanner, it is automatically scanned and the image is sent to a software application on your computer. To scan using AutoLaunch: 1. Align a document with the Paper Guides and insert it into the paper feed slot. Insert face down to scan a single side. To scan both sides, either side can be face up.
The scanner grabs the top edge of the paper and automatically begins to scan and feed the paper through the scanner. 2. A scan progress window opens and then a thumbnail of the scanned image appears in the destination software. In the following example, the destination software is the PaperPort desktop.
The item is scanned using predefined settings from the OneTouch software, such as color for magazine articles or black and white for faxes. To change OneTouch settings, see "Selecting New OneTouch Scan Settings" on page 44.
