ViviCam 25 User Manual It is helpful to read this user manual before using your new ViviCam 25 digital camera. The ViviCam 25 has many features and the included software is both powerful and fun to use. The ViviCam 25 and included software provide a great opportunity to learn about digital photography and digital imaging. Batteries l Ensure that the batteries are oriented correctly in the camera. If the camera will not power-up and nothing appears on the Status LCD panel, the batteries may be inserted in wrong orientation. Reverse the orientation of the batteries and try again. Batteries must be installed and in good condition to retain images in the cameras memory. If the batteries are removed, your images will be lost. Therefore, always download your images as soon as possible to safeguard against loss. Alkaline or Ni-MH AA batteries may be used with this camera. The camera may be damaged if you use poor quality batteries. Make sure new batteries are fresh and/or fully charged. Remove the batteries if you do not expect to use the camera for two-weeks or more. The camera uses a minimal amount of battery power even when powered-off. This is required to retain images in memory. The batteries may explode or cause burns if disassembled, recharged, shorted, exposed to high temperature, or disposed of in fire.

If accidentally dropped in water, please pour out the water as soon as possible. Dry the camera in sunlight or using an air-blower. Protect the camera from excessive humidity. Condensation on the lens will cause images to appear blurred. Do not expose the camera to sand or dust. Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the camera yourself. an authorized service facility for repair.

To store the camera remove the batteries, wrap it in a piece of clean, soft cloth and place it in a cool, dry, dust-free place. Do not place the camera directly under the sun or in any hot circumstances. Take care of the lens. Use a soft lens cloth to clean it. Do not scratch the lens, status LCD panel, or viewfinder. If the Status LCD Panel is damaged, do not touch it. Condensation is a problem when bringing cold equipment into a warm room. Try to put the camera in a plastic bag so condensation forms on the outside of the bag. WARNING: Handling the USB cable on this product may expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. 4. Power-on the ViviCam 25 After inserting the AA batteries, press the Mode button to power on the camera. The LCD will turn on and the camera is ready. The Status LCD will display as shown:

Meaning Image counter showing the number of images currently stored in camera memory. In this example, no images are currently stored in memory.
HI Battery
Resolution. Currently set to Hi, which is 640 x 480. Battery condition. In this example, the batteries are full.

5. Camera Display Icons -
Self-Timer icon: To capture an image after 10 seconds.
Video icon: Streaming video (movie) mode.
Burst icon: To capture a sequence (burst) of 3 images.
Delete-All icon: Erases all images from camera memory.
Delete-Last icon: Deletes the last image from camera memory.
Battery icon: Indicates battery condition as Full or Low.
Flash icon: Indicates flash mode.
High resolution: Camera is set to 640 x 480 pixels
Low resolution: Camera is set to 320 x 240 pixels

6. Using your ViviCam 25
The ViviCam 25 has two modes capture and stand-by. In standby mode the battery is inserted, but the LCD is off and the camera is conserving power. To activate capture mode, press the Mode button once to power on the unit. The LCD will come on and the camera is ready to capture an image. In the capture mode: a. If you press the Shutter button, the camera will capture an image. The image counter increments by one (i.e. from 000 to 001) as the image is captured and stored to memory.
b. If you press the Mode button once, it will display `oFF'. to turn off the camera, placing it in standby mode.

c. If you press the Mode button twice, the camera displays `So' meaning "Strobe off" indicating that the flash (strobe) is turned off. If you press the Shutter button while "So" is displayed you will notice the `Flash' icon blinks, indicating that the flash is charging. When the flash icon stops blinking the charging process is completed and you may capture an image using the flash.

"So" means "Strobe off" and the flash is off.
When the flash icon is blinking, the flash is charging. To turn off the flash press the Mode button twice until you see `SL'. Press the shutter button once to turn off the Flash. "SL" means "Strobe Lamp" is on.
Note that the flash will always be off when the camera is powered up from the standby mode or when new batteries are inserted. d. Pressing the Mode button three times brings up the timer icon. Press the
shutter button and the camera will capture an image after 10 seconds. During the ten-second interval the camera will beep and the LED indicator on the front of the camera will blink (red) as the camera counts down.

Note: If you do not press the shutter button in five-seconds (either to invoke a feature or to capture an image) the camera will power-down to standby-by mode. Note: To capture an image using both the flash (strobe) and the self-timer, you must first turn the flash (So) to charge up the Flash before selecting the self-timer. e. Pressing the Mode button four times brings up the Video icon. Press and hold the shutter button to capture a video clip. The camera will record video until the memory is full or you release the shutter button. It is recommend that you use Low resolution (320 x 240) so the movie duration may be longer.
f. Pressing the Mode button five times displays the `Burst' icon. Press the Shutter button to capture a burst of three sequential images in rapid succession, known as a burst. The image counter will increment by three.

g. Pressing the Mode button six times displays the Delete-All (Trashcan + A) icon. If you press the Shutter button the film counter will blink. Press the Shutter button again to delete all images and video clips from camera memory.
h. Pressing the Mode button seven times displays the Delete-Last (Trashcan) icon. Press the Shutter button once to delete the last image or video clip from camera memory.
i. Press the Mode button eight times followed by a press of the shutter button to change the resolution high (640 x 480) to low (320 x 480). The `Lo' icon will displace the `HI' icon. resolution. Repeat this process will change from Low to High

Pressing the Mode button nine times will display `60' indicating that the camera is optimized for indoor image capture under an AC lighting frequency of 60 Hz. (Common in USA and Canada.) Press the shutter button to change to 50 Hz. (Common in Europe and Asia.) This applies to indoor shooting only and will not affect the camera performance outdoors in sunlight. Repeat this process to change back to 60 Hz.
j. Pressing the Mode button ten times displays the flash (strobe) mode.
`SA'
(Strobe Automatic) indicates the flash is in automatic mode. In automatic mode the camera will determine if the flash should fire based upon scene lighting. Pressing the shutter button will change to "SF" (Strobe Forced) flash mode. In forced mode the flash will always fire. Repeat this process to revert to auto.
Note: Forced flash is also known as "fill flash."

Note: You cannot capture an image if the memory is full, if the Flash icon is blinking or if the ambient light is too low (Flash is off). Note: The camera will automatically power off if no button is pressed in 30 seconds. Note: The camera will return to capture mode if a feature is not selected in 5 seconds. Note: If the camera is connected to a PC (with USB cable), pressing the Mode button will display a different sequence of icons, as shown below. While tethered to a PC, the flash and automatic power-off features are disabled.

Note: When the memory is full and you press the shutter button, `FL' will display (blinking) for five seconds. After which the camera returns to capture mode.
Notes on using Flash
v Turn on the flash if you want to capture an image at night. v The flash-charging time is longer if the battery power is low v Flash is disabled when the camera is connected to a PC via USB v The optimal distance between object and camera is three to five feet v In situations of limited lighting try capturing an image with, and without, flash and compare the results.

Low Battery Detection:
When the battery power is low, the battery icon will blink. before changing the batteries. Download your images to PC

7. Installing the ViviCam 25 camera driver
Note: You must install the ViviCam 25 driver software before connecting the camera to your PC for the first time. (This applies to all versions of Windows 98SE/Me/2000/Xp) 1. Insert the product CD-ROM into your PCs CD-ROM drive. It will run automatically and display a Welcome Screen. 2. Click on `Install Camera Driver' to start camera driver installation. < Follow the on-screen instructions. 3. After the driver is installed you may install the included software titles. < After installation, you may need to restart your PC. 4. After restarting, connect the camera to your PC using the USB cable. < Your PC will recognize the camera and complete the installation process.
After you have installed the ViviCam 25 driver you may connect to your PC with the provided USB cord.
Your PC will recognize the Camera and the installation will be completed.

8. Downloading Images to your PC
Locate the Viv iCam 25 folder on your PCs desktop.
Double click the ViviCam 25 shortcut. Or click Start-Programs- ViviCam 25- ViviCam 25

It will open the ViviCam 25 Graphical User Interface (GUI). Click on the `DOWNLOAD' icon to download small thumbnail-sized representations of the images stored in camera memory. Thumbnail images will appear in the twelve cells in the GUI.
Click `SELECT ALL' icon. Note: You may need to click this icon once for each page of thumbnails if there are more than twelve images in camera memory.

Click `SAVE TO DISK' icon to save all selected thumbnails. The file format for still-images is JPG.
Click `Exit' icon to exit the driver interface.

9. Downloading an AVI video clip to your PC Capture an AVI video with the camera. Connect the camera to your PC using the USB cord. Double click the ViviCam 25 shortcut to open the ViviCam 25 Graphical User Interface (GUI). Click the `DOWNLOAD' icon.
A movie clip is indicated with "AVI" in the upper right-hand corner of the thumbnail, as shown.

Click `SAVE TO DISK' icon to save the video clip.
You can specify a file name prefix for your images and you may select a folder to store your images. Click on `Save' to save the AVI video clip.
To change the video frame rate, change the value in the AVI frame rate box. The default value is 4 frames per second. A higher value results in faster playback, while a small value results in slower playback.
A new window will open during the process as the video is processed. It takes up to two minutes to create a twenty second AVI video at High resolution.

Finally, click the `OK' icon to exit.
To playback your video clip, locate the AVI file and Double click on it to play the video file using Windows Media player. Note: You may need to have DirectX 8.1 installed on your PC to play the video file. The DirectX update available from the Microsoft website.

PC camera mode
Connect the camera to your PC using the USB cord. Double click on the ViviCam 25 desktop folder icon. Double click the PCCam shortcut inside the Viv iCam 25 folder on the desktop. Or, click Start-Programs- ViviCam 25-PCCam.
This will launch the PCCam video program application.
Within the PCCam program window, click on the `Devices' menu bar. It will show video sources. Select `ViviCam 25' to make ViviCam 25 the current video source.

If live video does not appear in the PCCam window, click on Options, Preview.
After the `Preview' icon is checked, it will display live video from your ViviCam 25.
You may record live video to your PC using the ViviCam 25 and the PCCam utility. Click on the `Capture' menu, followed by `Start Capture' to setup the capture process.

Enter a name for your new video by creating a filename such as `MYVIDEO.AVI'.
The first time you use the PCCam program to record a video, it will present a dialog box as shown to the right. This dialog box asks that you specify the maximum file size (the upper size limit) for a recorded video. Enter a limit, expressed in MB (Megabytes) and click `OK'.
Finally, the `Ready to Capture' dialog box is presented, as shown. Click `OK' to start recording video. To stop video recording press the ESC key on your keyboard.

To playback your video clip, locate the AVI file and Double click on it to play the video file using Windows Media player. Note: You may need to have DirectX 8.1 installed on your PC to play the video file. DirectX is an update available from the Microsoft website.
Note 1: The video frame rate is approximately 8 frames per second. Note 2: Recorded video files can become quite large. A video file can take up to 10 MB per second of video at 640 x 480 (VGA) resolution. Video files recorded at 320 x 240 will be considerably smaller.

11. Downloading Images with PhotoImpression -
Connect the camera to your PC using the USB cord. Start PhotoImpression. Double click the desktop shortcut or click on: < Start Programs ArcSoft PhotoImpression 4 PhotoImpression 4.

2. Click on the `Camera/Scanner' button.
3. From the "Select Source" drop-down list Select `ViviCam 25'. You may (optionally) choose an album to store your images using the `Select Album' drop-down list. 4. Click on the `Acquire' button.
The ViviCam 25 GUI will open. 5. Click on the `DOWNLOAD' button. Thumbnail representations of the images in the camera will appear in the twelve cells in the GUI window. You can click on any thumbnail image to enlarge it.

If there are more than twelve images in the camera there will be more than one page of thumbnails. Click on the left or right arrows to browse the pages of thumbnails. 6. Select those images you wish to transfer to your PC. You may selectively pick and choose some of the thumbnails for download, or you may click on the button `Select all photos in this page' to select every image.
7. Click on the `TRANSFER TO AP.' icon to initiate the image transfer process.

All the selected images are downloaded to the `New Album1' folder. The thumbnails are shown in the PhotoImpression program.
Double click on a thumbnail and the image is displayed in the main PhotoImpression viewing frame.

12. Using the PC video camera with PhotoImpression Connect the camera to your PC using the USB cord and start PhotoImpression. 1. Click on the `Camera/Scanner' button. 2. From the "Select Source" drop-down menu select the Source as `ViviCam 25'. 3. Click on the `Video camera' icon.
A new dialog box will appear. It allows you to control the video from the camera.
`Source': changes the video settings such as brightness and contrast. `Format': changes the resolution. (Default is 320 x 240 pixels. Options include 640 x 480 and 160 x 120.) `Live': display live, real-time video `Capture': Records an image (a snapshot) from the live video stream. `Done': close the dialog panel.

13. Installing Additional Software Applications The ViviCam 25 CD ROM usually includes additional software applications. The exact nature and content may change depending upon your retailer and the options currently available. You may install the additional software applications by clicking on the title on the CD ROM Welcome Screen.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is a universal tool for reading "PDF" documents, such as the ViviCam 25 User manual. To install Acrobat Reader click on "Install Acrobat Reader" and follow the on-screen instructions.

14. Techniques and Troubleshooting:
Techniques for capturing good images a. Avoid scenes with a high degree of contrast. Avoid situations when the background is too bright (sky, shiny object, white wall, light source). This will cause the subject image to be too dark. b. Take care when the background is too dark (black object, black wall). It may cause the subject image too bright. c. The shortest range of focus is three feet from camera to subject. Any object closer than three feet will be out of focus. d. Don't point the camera directly at a light source (light bulb, the sun) e. For outdoor images, place the subject facing into sunlight. f. Avoid capturing an image with a shiny surface or reflective area (objects which are made of glass or metal). g. Avoid capturing an image if the subject is in the shaded area (under a tree or inside an entrance). The object will be too dark. h. If the captured image exhibits speckles (noise) due to low lighting, capture the image again using the flash. Troubleshooting The camera has no power and the Check the battery polarity and condition. LCD is off. Replace with fresh batteries. If connected to a PC, check the USB cord for complete insertion. The camera won't capture an image. If the LCD is off, press the Mode button to power on the unit. The light intensity is too low. Try using the flash. This may be due to camera motion during capture. At low levels of illumination the shutter speed may be too slow for hand held image capture. Try using a tripod. The images are too bright. The camera lens is facing into a bright light source.

Uninstalling the camera driver If it is necessary to remove the ViviCam 25 driver click on: Start Programs ViviCam 25 Uninstall.
