Discountcarstereo.com VOLKSWAGEN iPod ADAPTER OWNER'S MANUAL INTRODUCTION Precision Interface Electronics (PIE) has released a new line of VW iPod interfaces that allow you to interface your iPod or iPod Mini directly to the OEM (factory) radio in your Volkswagen Group Vehicle. Using this interface, the iPod will take the place of the VW CD Changer, noted you will see the difference in operations. The radio will be able to directly access your playlist (s), just like changing disc. If any playlist contain more than 100 tracks, the tracks will be divided into sub-folder of 100 tracks each. These folders are referred to as "BANKS". The CD Changer function of the radio will be utilized to operate the iPod, allowing you to benefit from: 1. Direct connection of the iPod to VW vehicle audio system for optimum sound quality 2. Control iPod playback with the CD Changer buttons on the VW radio 3. Direct access and control of up to 6 favorite playlist 4. Charges the iPod internal battery 5. Plug-n-play: includes installation cable, interface and owner's manual Note: If a Volkswagen CD Changer is present, you must disconnect it before installing this interface. COMPATIBILITY Use with one of the following iPod models: iPod (G3/G4) , iPod Photo and iPod mini equipped with a dock connector. Note: The operation and functions of this interface described herein have only been confirmed with the following firmware versions (see apple.com/iPod for firmware updates*) iPod firmware v2.2 firmware v3.0 (G4) iPod Mini firmware v1.1 *control functions may not remain the same after updating the iPod with firmware not specified in this manual DiscountCarStereo.com PLAYLIST NAMING Once your iPodTM or iPodTM mini is connected to the interface, the radio will see all the playlist(s) as CD's. The VW radio will allow a maximum of 6 CDs/playlist (i.e. presets 1 - 6). Therefore, you will need to name your playlist(s) using the letters "CD" and the number corresponding to that preset. The entire library will automatically be stored in any unnamed/empty playlist (if any playlist is left unnamed/empty).The following is an example of correct playlist(s) naming: Preset #'s Preset 1 Preset 2 Preset 3 Preset 4 Preset 5 Preset 6 Playlist(s) names "CD1" "CD2" "CD3" "CD4" "CD5" "CD6" The name of the playlist must be exactly as shown, "CD" must be in capital letters, no spaces between letters and the corresponding number for that preset must be present. The following is an incorrect way of naming a playlist: Preset 1 Preset 2 Preset 3 "C_D1" "CD_ _ _ _" "C_D1hip-hop" However, you may add any text after the correct name has been assigned. The following is an example of correct playlist naming with additional text: Preset 1 Preset 2 Preset 3 Preset 4 Preset 5 Preset 6 "CD1 DCS" "CD2 Family" "CD3 Loves" "CD4 Jazz" "CD5 Classical" "CD6 R&B" PLAYBACK FUNCTIONS Track Up and Down The radio has "" buttons which will allow you to track up (SEEK ) and track down ( SEEK) through each track on the current playlist. (Beetle radios have separate "" buttons) Fast Track Mode Pressing the "SCAN" button twice (scan on, scan off) will change the "" functions. In this mode, the "" buttons will track up and down in increments of 10. Pressing the "SCAN" button twice (scan on, scan off) will turn off the "Fast Track" mode. Fast Forward and Fast Rewind The "" buttons, when pressed and held, will fast forward and fast rewind through the track currently playing. Note: Performing a fast forward or fast rewind command will cancel "fast track" mode. Discountcarstereo.com SCAN (also used for BANK-VIEW and FAST TRACK modes) Press the "SCAN" button once and the radio will play 10 seconds of each song in the entire playlist. The radio will continue to play this way until "SCAN" is deactivated (press "SCAN" once). MIX (Random Play) Pressing the "MIX" button of the radio will engage the iPodTM into random play mode. While in this mode, the radio will randomly play songs from the entire playlist. The track number will change to 1 just like it does on the iPodTM and iPodTM mini. The radio will continue to play this way until "MIX" is deactivated. READING THE RADIO'S DISPLAY Your radio's track number display is only 2 characters long. If a playlist has more than 99 tracks, track numbers roll over. However, you may still keep track of what track number the iPodTM is playing using PIE's special feature called "Bank View" mode. NOTE: The 99th and 100th song of every "BANK" will be displayed as "TR99". While playing "TR99", press the track up button and track 100 will play (display stays on "TR99"). Bank View Mode Pressing the "SCAN" button 3 times (scan on, scan off, scan on), the radio's track number display will show you which "BANK" you are currently playing. The "MIX" function must be turned off it is on. "BANK" numbers are designated as follows: "TR01" = BANK 1 "TR02" = BANK 2 "TR03" = BANK 3 "TR04" = BANK 4 songs 1 - 100 songs 101 - 200 songs 201 - 300 songs 301 - 400 Revised 7/7/05 © 1995-04 Discount Car Stereo, Inc.
