Add new handsets to make your telephone more versatile (see page 63)
Your VTech 5871/5873 telephone system can operate up to eght handsets. You can add new handsets (model number 5808, sold separately) at any tme, but each must be regstered wth the base unt before use. The handset provded wth your telephone s automatcally regstered as Handset 1. Addtonal handsets wll be assgned numbers n the order they are regstered (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). · Use only the VTech battery and AC power adaptor suppled wth ths telephone. · If the handset wll not be used for a long perod of tme, remove the battery to prevent possble leakage.
Install the base unt and the charger as shown below. Choose a central locaton wthn the home, away from any electronc equpment and applances such as personal computers, computer routers, televson sets, mcrowave ovens, and refrgerators. Avod excessve heat, cold, dust or mosture.

Plug the telephone lne cord nto a telephone jack.
Plug power adapter nto an electrcal outlet not controlled by a wall swtch.

· Press the tab and slde cover away from the battery compartment. · Place the battery n the compartment wth the metal contacts algned, as shown n the dagram. · Poston the battery compartment cover and slde t towards the unt untl t clcks nto place. · Put the handset n the base unt to start chargng the new battery for at least 12 hours. You can keep the battery charged by returnng the handset to the base unt after each use. When the battery power s fully depleted, a full recharge takes about 12 hours.

In Canada, call 1 (800) 267-7377. · Whenever a compatble headset s connected to the cordless handset, the mcrophone on the handset wll be muted. Ths s done to lmt the effect of background nose.
Belt clip & headset (optonal)
Install belt clp and headset as shown below f desred. For hands-free telephone conversatons, use any ndustry standard 2.5 mm headset (purchased separately). For best result, use a VTech 2.5 mm headset.
Plug the 2.5 mm headset nto the jack on the sde of the handset (beneath the small rubber cap).

Dial mode
If you have touch-tone servce, your telephone s ready to use as soon as the battery s charged. If you have pulse (rotary) servce, the dal mode must be changed. Press /FLASH and there should be a dal tone. If not, refer to the Set dial mode secton on page 20.
About caller ID information
The caller ID wth call watng features n ths telephone let you see who s callng before answerng the call, even when on another call. These features requre servces provded by your local telephone company. Contact your telephone servce provder f: · you have both caller ID and call watng, but as separate servces (you may need combned servce), · you have only caller ID servce, or only call watng servce, or · you do not subscrbe to any caller ID or call watng servces but wsh to try them now. You can use ths telephone wth regular caller ID servce, and you can use ts other features wthout subscrbng to ether caller ID or combned caller ID wth call watng servce. There may be fees for these servces, and these servces may not be avalable n all areas. The caller ID features wll work only f both you and the caller are n areas offerng caller ID servce, and f both telephone companes use compatble equpment.

Ths feature allows you to lsten to messages on the answerng system usng the handset. When there are new messages on the answerng system, New Message wll be displayed on the handset screen, and the answering system icon will flash on the handset screen n dle mode. · The day and tme the message was recorded wll be announced before playback. · The screen on the handset wll show the day and tme the memo and ncomng messages are recorded, the length of the message, and a dagram of the NavKey llustratng how to repeat or skp a message. · If t s a memo recorded at the answerng machne, the screen dsplays Memo. To enter ths menu: · Make sure the base unt s n dle mode. · Press the softkey MENU to dsplay the menu. · Press the softkey once to reach the BASE SETTINGS, then press SELECT to select. · Use the softkey or to scroll through the settngs to be changed and press the softkey SELECT to select the menu to enter. Clock setting · When n the CLOCK SETTING menu, the current clock s dsplayed. · Press the softkey CHANGE to change the dgt and the AM/PM. Press the softkey NEXT to move to the next dgt. · Press the SET softkey when finished setting the time, and there will be a confirmation tone.
