We have provided many important safety messages in this manual and on your appliance. Always read and obey all safety messages. This is the safety alert symbol. This symbol alerts you to potential hazards that can kill or hurt you and others. All safety messages will follow the safety alert symbol and either the word "DANGER" or "WARNING." These words mean: DANGER WARNING You can be killed or seriously injured if you don't immediately follow instructions. You can be killed or seriously injured if you don't follow instructions. All safety messages will tell you what the potential hazard is, tell you how to reduce the chance of injury, and tell you what can happen if the instructions are not followed. IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury when using your refrigerator, follow these basic precautions: s s s s s s s Plug into a grounded 3 prong outlet. Do not remove ground prong. Do not use an adapter. Do not use an extension cord. Disconnect power before servicing. Replace all parts and panels before operating. Remove doors from your old refrigerator. s s s s s Use nonflammable cleaner. Keep flammable materials and vapors, such as gasoline, away from refrigerator. Use two or more people to move and install refrigerator. Disconnect power before installing ice maker (on ice maker kit ready models only). Use a sturdy glass when dispensing ice (on some models). SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Proper Disposal of Your Old Refrigerator Before You Throw Away Your Old Refrigerator or Freezer: s Take off the doors. Leave the shelves in place so that children may not easily climb inside. WARNING Suffocation Hazard Remove doors from your old refrigerator. Failure to do so can result in death or brain damage. IMPORTANT: Child entrapment and suffocation are not problems of the past. Junked or abandoned refrigerators are still dangerous ­ even if they will sit for "just a few days." If you are getting rid of your old refrigerator, please follow these instructions to help prevent accidents. s 2 REFRIGERATOR USE Using the Controls s Turning Refrigerator On If the refrigerator is not on, press COOLING ON/OFF to turn the cooling on. To turn your refrigerator off, press COOLING ON/OFF. Your refrigerator will not cool when the control is set to Off. NOTE: Pressing the Cooling On/Off button does not disconnect power to the refrigerator. The interior lights will turn off if either compartment door is open for more than 10 minutes. Simply close and open the door to turn on the interior lights. WARNING s Electrical Shock Hazard Plug into a grounded 3 prong outlet. Do not remove ground prong. Do not use an adapter. Do not use an extension cord. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, fire, or electrical shock. NOTE: Make sure the refrigerator is plugged into a grounded 3 prong outlet. The control panel is located in the top of the refrigerator compartment. To view or adjust the controls, push up on the control panel and release. Viewing Set Points The factory recommended set points are 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer and 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator. Set point range for the freezer: -6° to 6°F (-21°C to -14°C) Set point range for the refrigerator: 32° to 46°F (0°C to 8°C) To view the set point temperatures, press either the up or down button for the refrigerator or freezer temperature. The display will become brighter to indicate that you are viewing the set points. Five seconds after an adjustment is made, the display lights will dim and return to the actual temperature. NOTE: During automatic defrost cycles, the actual temperature displayed may be higher than the set point. This is normal. The actual temperatures should return to the set points within a few hours following completion of the defrost cycle. Adjusting Controls For your convenience, your refrigerator controls are preset at the factory. When you first install your refrigerator, make sure that the controls are still preset to the mid-settings as shown. The mid-settings indicated in the previous section should be correct for normal household refrigerator usage. The controls are set correctly when milk or juice is as cold as you like and when ice cream is firm. If the temperature is too warm or too cold in the refrigerator or freezer, first check the air vents to be sure they are not blocked. If you need to adjust temperatures, use the settings listed in the chart below as a guide. Wait at least 24 hours between adjustments. CONDITION/REASON: IMPORTANT: s The refrigerator control adjusts the refrigerator compartment temperature. The freezer control adjusts the freezer compartment temperature. s ADJUSTMENT: REFRIGERATOR Control 1° lower FREEZER Control 1° lower REFRIGERATOR Control 1° higher FREEZER Control 1° higher REFRIGERATOR too warm FREEZER too warm/too little ice REFRIGERATOR too cold FREEZER too cold The displays normally show the actual temperature inside the refrigerator and freezer. For information on displaying set point temperatures, see "Viewing Set Points." Wait 24 hours before you put food into the refrigerator. If you add food before the refrigerator has cooled completely, your food may spoil. NOTE: Adjusting the refrigerator and freezer controls to a lower (colder) setting will not cool the compartments any faster. s 3 Additional Control Panel Features Convertible Drawer Temperature Control The control can be adjusted to properly chill meats or vegetables. The air inside the pan is cooled to prevent "spot" freezing and can be set to keep meats at the National Livestock and Meat Board recommended storage temperatures of 28° to 32°F (-2° to 0°C). The convertible drawer temperature control is preset to the PRODUCE setting. Temp Mode s Press TEMP MODE to select either Celsius or Fahrenheit temperature displays. To Store Meat: Set the control to one of the three MEAT settings to store meat at its optimal storage temperature. To Store Vegetables: Quick Cool Use Quick Cool to speed the cooling of large grocery loads. Quick Cool sets the refrigerator temperature to 34°F (1°C) and the freezer temperature to -6°F (-21°C) for 24 hours. NOTE: While Quick Cool is on, the display shows the Quick Cool temperature set points. After 24 hours or when Quick Cool is manually turned off, the set points will be returned to their previous setting. s Press QUICK COOL to select this mode. Quick Cool will stay on for 24 hours or until it is manually turned off. Set the control to PRODUCE to store vegetables at their optimal storage temperatures. NOTE: If food starts to freeze, move the control to the left (less cold). Remember to wait 24 hours between adjustments. Crisper Humidity Control (on some models) You can control the amount of humidity in the moisture-sealed crisper. Adjust the control to any setting between LOW and HIGH. LOW (open) for best storage of fruits and vegetables with skins. HIGH (closed) for best storage of fresh, leafy vegetables. Door Chill Control IceMagic® System Use the IceMagic® System during periods of heavy ice usage. NOTE: While using the IceMagic® System, you may need to set the meat pan temperature control to a higher (less cool) setting. See "Convertible Drawer Temperature Control." s Press ICEMAGIC function to select this mode. The IceMagic® feature will stay on until it is manually turned off. NOTE: Using the IceMagic® System may make some foods in the freezer, such as ice cream, harder. s The door chill control is located on the left-hand side of the refrigerator compartment. s Turn the control clockwise (right) to reduce the flow of cold air to the door and make it less cold. s Turn the control counterclockwise (left) to increase the flow of cold air to the door and make it colder. Press ICEMAGIC function a second time to deselect this mode. Water and Ice Dispensers (on some models) Door Alarm Use the Door Alarm to hear and see a signal when the door has been left open. s Press DOOR ALARM to turn the alarm on. If either compartment door is left open for more than 10 minutes, the alarm will sound every 2 minutes and the indicator light will flash. NOTE: The refrigerator and freezer interior lights will turn off if a door is left open for more than 10 minutes, whether the alarm is turned on or off. Depending on your model, you may have one or more of the following options: the ability to select either crushed or cubed ice, a special light that turns on when you use the dispenser, or a lock option to avoid unintentional dispensing. NOTES: s The dispensing system will not operate when the freezer door is open. s After connecting the refrigerator to a water source, flush the water system by dispensing water into a sturdy container until you draw and discard 1.5 gal. (5.4 L) of water, or for approximately 3 minutes after the water begins dispensing. The flushing process cleans the water system and clears air from the lines. As the air is cleared from the lines, water may spurt out of the dispenser. Allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool down and chill water. Allow 24 hours to produce the first batch of ice. Discard the first three batches of ice produced. s s s Reset the Door Alarm by simply closing the door. 4 The Water Dispenser IMPORTANT: Dispense enough water every week to maintain a fresh supply. The Dispenser Lock (on some models) Your dispenser can be turned off for easy cleaning or to prevent unintentional dispensing by small children and pets. NOTE: The lock feature does not shut off power to the product, to the ice maker, or to the dispenser light. It simply deactivates the dispenser levers. The ice and water dispensers will not work.
