Digital Camera Model DC10A Introduction Thank you for purchasing the DC10A camera. The DC10A will bring your kids and your family lots of fun. Your photos can be archived electronically, and you can share your memories with your friends and family by sending your photos over the Internet. Unpacking As you remove the camera from its packaging, check to make sure that all of the following items are included. If anything is missing, please contact X10. Digital Camera. CD-ROM installation disk. USB Cable. Note you will need 2 x AA alkaline batteries, not included. General Precautions Be sure to observe the following important precautions when using the DC10A Camera. Do not switch off the camera's battery power switch, and never open the battery door while pictures are being taken or recorded. Otherwise, all pictures stored will be lost. Never try to take a picture while operating a motor vehicle or while walking. Doing so could cause an accident. Never try to open the camera's case or attempt your own repairs. Keep the camera away from water and other liquids and never let it get wet. Dropping can cause damage, and can cause the images stored in memory to be lost. Be sure to always backup the images by uploading to your PC and saving to your Hard Disk. 2 3 Installation DC10A Application Programs The CD includes: DC10A Drivers DC10A AVI Creator Arcsoft Photo-image software There are three applications in the Arcsoft Photo-image software: PhotoBase 2.0, PhotoPrinter 2000, and PhotoFantasy 2000. Please refer to the on line help in the application for user instructions and information. To get help in PhotoFantasy 2000 or Photoprinter 2000: 1) Click the Get Photo icon. 2) Click the Acquire (camera) icon. 3) Select source, DC10A Camera. To get help in PhotoBase: 1) Click the Acquire (camera). 2) Select source, DC10A Camera. Next install the Hardware: After you've installed the applications and the drivers, remove the rubber cover on one side of the DC10A, you will find a USB socket. Plug the square connector on the USB cable to the camera's USB socket. Plug the other end to the USB port on your computer. The computer will detect new hardware and complete the installation. After the software has been successfully installed, the ArcSoft program icon will be placed on your Windows desktop. It is recommended that you visit www.arcsoft.com for updates and patches. 5 Install the Software first: Included on the CD ROM are device drivers and several applications for different purposes. Insert the CD-ROM into your PC's CD-ROM drive, the setup program on the CD-ROM will run automatically. If the auto-run feature of your CD-ROM drive is not enabled, just run the "Setup" program on the CD-ROM to start the setup program. 4 Operation Power On 1. Push the battery door latch in the direction indicated on the battery door. The battery door will unlock. 2. Open the battery door and insert two AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment. Make sure the direction of batteries follow the symbols in the battery compartment. 3. Close the battery door and push the door latch back to lock the door. 4. Push the power switch to the upper position to turn on the camera. 5. The camera gives a beep sound at power on and the display shows "Hr" and then "26." The camera is now ready for taking pictures. Camera Modes The DC10A has several mode settings, Push the mode button to select the mode. Two characters will be displayed to indicate the selected mode. Means you are ready to take 26 pictures (VGA: 640 x 480 pixels) in high resolution mode. Continuous mode (Ct). You can take photos in high resolution in Ct mode (nonstop). Press mode button until you see Ct on the display. Press and hold Capture button. The camera will start to take continuous shots until the capture button is released. Release button when display shows 00. Self Timer mode (St). In this mode, when the shutter button is pressed, the camera will wait 10 seconds before taking the picture. Clear memory (Cl). When this mode is selected, press the shutter button twice to clear all pictures stored in the camera. Low resolution mode (Lr). To store 107 pictures in low resolution mode, push the mode button until the display shows "Lr." Once a picture has been taken, the camera resolution mode cannot be changed. Means you are ready to take 107 pictures (CIF: 320 x 240 pixels), but the two character display can only indicate 99 as the largest number. The display will therefore remain at 99 until you have taken 10 pictures, at which point the display will show 98 left to take. High Resolution mode (Hr). The camera defaults to "High Resolution" mode which lets you store 26 pictures. 7 Taking pictures The DC10A is easy to use. What you see through the camera's view finder is what will be taken, you do not need to focus the camera. Gently press the shutter button. The camera makes a beep sound and takes a picture. The display shows the number of pictures remaining. If it's too dark, the camera gives a beep sound in a lower tone, indicating that no picture has been taken. The camera will enter standby mode if it has not been operated for a minute. In standby mode, the camera will keep its power consumption to a minimum and the display will be blank. To put the camera back into operation, just press the mode button. Caution: Do not switch off the camera if pictures have been taken. Otherwise, all pictures stored will be lost. Upload pictures to your PC before you turn the camera off. 6 PhotoBase Quick Start PhotoFantasy Quick Start Main Display Area: This area lets you select fantasy backgrounds, view adjustments and make enhancements that make your photos look more exciting. Main Display Click the "Live Preview" button to turn your live video camera on or off. Click the "Snap Photo" button to capture a photo from your camera. Click the Select Video Source button to select from available Video-forWindows drivers if you have more than one. Step 1. Click the "Acquire" icon. Select source (STV0680) if you have more than one. Click on an image, then click capture, or capture all. Step 2. Click on the thumbnail of each photo and then type in its title, date, etc. Click on Label names in Album menu to change names. Click the "OK" Button to save. Step 3. To save the photos into an album. Click the "Save" icon and then type the name. Step 4. To start a slide show with the photos in the album. Click "Album" on the menu bar and select "Slide Show" in the pull down menu. Click "OK" in the Slide Show dialog box to start a slide show with default settings. Press the ESC key or click the left mouse button to exit during a slide show. Step 5. You can add photos to an album. Click on the "Add" icon, select the directory and photo and then click "Open." Save the album again to update your album. Note 1. You can delete photos from an album by using the "Delete" icon. Note 2. You can launch other Arcsoft applications from PhotoBase by clicking on their icons. (Right click to add applications to the bottom of the screen first). Note 3. You can e-mail photos to your friends. Click on the photo that you want to mail and click on the "Mail" icon. Step 1. Click on the "Get Fantasy" icon to select the fantasy background for your photo fantasy. (Need CD in drive), you can also create your own fantasy backgrounds. Step 2. Each of these buttons corresponds to a particular mask/photo in a fantasy background. Step 3. Adjust the photo to the desired position and size in the fantasy by using the icons on the right side of the screen. You can mirror the photo horizontally, move it up or down, or right/left, adjust its size, rotate it, and put text on it. Use the "Zoom in" icon to zoom in on the fantasy for easy alignment of the photo. Step 4. Use the "Match Color" icon to match the tone of your photo to that of the fantasy. You can also find the correct color tone by using the slide bars for contrast, brightness and color adjustment. Step 5. Save your fantasy by clicking the "Save" icon. Select your destination directory and type in the file name. 8 9 PhotoPrinter Quick Start You can easily edit and print photos with PhotoPrinter. DC10A AVI Creator Make your own movie clip (of the images stored in the camera) for 3 seconds or 14 seconds using Windows AVI. Movie viewing time: 3 seconds for VGA (640 x 480) and 14 seconds for CIF (320 x 240). AVI format, based on 10 photos per second frame-rate. Make sure the camera is connected to the PC. Decide how many photos to be viewed per second (Frame Rate) using the slider bar. Normally, 10 photos are allocated per second. Check the compression box if you want to compress or zip the AVI file. Step 1. Select the paper size you need in the printer setup. Click on the "Printer Setup" icon and select the desired paper size. Step 2. Select the layout that you want on the print out. Select (a) the type then (b) the layout. Step 3. Get the photo(s) that you want to print. Simply click on the position that you want the photo to go then get a photo by clicking on the "Get Photos" icon. You can select a different photo for each of the positions in the layout. Step 4. If necessary you can trim a photo. First click on the photo that you want to trim. Step 5. If desired you can touch up the photo. Click on the "Edit Photo" icon and experiment with the editing options available. Step 6. Click the "Print" icon to print. Note: The CD must in the CD-ROM drive to get stock photos. Creating the file Click on the Create button to create the AVI file. Type in a name you want, and where to save, then click Open. When the AVI file is being created you will see a progress bar showing you how it is progressing. It takes approx. 14 seconds (CIF is recommended). An unzipped the file is 24 Mb, after zipping the file is 3.8 Mb. Playing an AVI file To open the file click on the Open button. A dialog box appears allowing you to choose the file name you want to open. Your AVI file will then be shown in a window. button on the You can play it by using either the Play button in the application or the bottom of the window. 10 11 Hints On Using Your Camera Lighting The DC10A requires sufficient lighting to take pictures. Make sure the light source is located either behind or above the person taking the picture. A low beep means there is not enough light - a high beep means the image is saved in the camera. Distance The best distance for taking pictures is 2 to 6 feet. Display Clarity Check to make sure the color palette and desktop area of your display are correct. To do this, click the Settings menu. Select Setting and Control Panel. Double-click the Display icon and click the Setting tab. We recommend the color palette be set to High color (16 bit color) or True color (24 bit color) and the Desktop area be set to 800 x 600 or higher. Image Size DC10A pictures are perfect for graphics, internet, and e-mail applications where the picture size is kept to a screen size of 640 x 480 pixels or 320 x 240 pixels. When DC10A images are enlarged beyond this resolution, the picture becomes grainy and pixelated. Print Size You can print your creations on an ink jet or laser printer. Due to the camera's resolution, we recommend that you avoid printing full page (8 x 10) photos. Frequently Asked Questions Why is the image blurry? The camera has limited resolution. The camera should be suitable for images such as a regular size (3 1/2 x 5) photo. Try not to take a picture of an object which is too small. Why does the image look soft? You can improve the image quality by increasing the contrast using the Arcsoft imaging software provided. The image transfer cannot be completed. You may have an old version of the software. Please download the latest upgrade from www.arcsoft.com The PC cannot find the camera. a. The camera is not connected properly. Make sure the cable is plugged in properly. b. Check Device Manager for USB driver problems. c. Restart your computer and connect the DC10A again. If the PC still cannot find the camera, disable any other device (in Device Manager) which may be in conflict with the DC10A. d. Reinstall the drivers from the CD (in the Programs/Drivers folder). Then reconnect camera to USB port. e.
