CONSIDERA ONSIDERATIONS S AFETY CONSIDERATIONS Remember to exercise good common sense when using your X10 remote's home automation features - especially when scheduling unattended devices. There can be some unexpected consequences if not used with care. For example, an empty coffee pot can be remotely turned on. If that should happen, your coffee pot could be damaged from overheating. If an electric heater is turned on by remote control while clothing is draped over it, a fire could result. DO NOT USE the system for the control of high power heating appliances such as portable heaters. Caution: To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble any part of the Home Automation System. No userserviceable parts are inside. If you spill liquid on a unit, disconnect the unit from the AC outlet to prevent possible fire or shock hazard and consult authorized service personnel. TROUBLESHOOTING ...................................... 38 WARRANTY .............................................. 39 4 5 GETTING STARTED GETTING STARTED Because we know that you are eager to get started, we've kept this introduction as short as possible, but it contains very valuable information, so you should read through it very carefully. CODES UNIT CODES HOUSE CODES AND UNIT CODES UNIT CODE DIAL MODULES CONTROLLERS AND MODULES The first thing you need to understand is that there are two different devices you need to control your house; Controllers and Modules. Any light or appliance that you want to control is plugged into a Module and that Module is then plugged into a standard AC outlet. Modules receive commands from Controllers. Examples include the Lamp Module (sold separately). The Transceiver Module (also sold separately) is another example (although it also doubles as a controller as described later). Controllers are plugged into standard wall outlets and send commands to Modules over your existing electrical wiring in your house without affecting your electricity in any way. The Transceiver Module works as a controller when it is used with a remote control such as the 8-in-1 Learning SuperRemote. When the Transceiver Module receives a command from the remote it sends digital signals over your existing house wiring to a Module which receives the signals and executes the command. The remote uses radio frequency (RF) signals to send commands to the Transceiver Module. RF signals can go right through walls, so you can use the remote to control lights or appliances from anywhere in your home. 6 HOUSE CODE DIAL Each Module has a specific address made up of a House Code (red dial on the face of the Module) and a Unit Code (black dial on the face of the Module). The Controller first sends an address and then a command on the AC power lines. Only the Module with a matching address will execute the command. If more than one Module has the same address, both Modules will execute the command. Addresses are set on the Module by turning the two dials on the front of the Module to the desired letter and number (using a small screwdriver or a coin). The House Code is selected from the letters A through P and the Unit Code is , selected from the numbers 1 through 16. 7 INST NSTALLING INSTALLING THE COMPONENTS MODULE TRANSCEIVER MODULE The Transceiver Module receives radio frequency (RF) commands from remotes to operate a lamp or appliance plugged into it. The Transceiver Module also passes on commands over your house wiring to control other X10 Modules. Note that unlike the Lamp Module you cannot dim and brighten a lamp connected to the Transceiver Module. You should locate the Transceiver Module centrally in the home for maximum range when controlled by the X10 Learning SuperRemote. 1. Set the House Code to `A' and the Unit Code to `2.' 2. Plug a lamp into the Lamp Module. 3. Plug the Lamp Module into a convenient AC outlet. 1. Set the House Code to `A' . 8-IN LEARNING SUPER IN-1 UPERR 8-IN-1 LEARNING SUPERREMOTE 2. Plug a lamp or appliance into the Transceiver Module. The 8-in-1 Learning SuperRemote allows you to control practically everything electrical in your home. It combines IR technology that lets you control all your TV, VCR, Cable and Satellite equipment with X10 RF technology that lets you control lamps and appliances anywhere in your home. To find out more about configuring the Learning SuperRemote to work with your audio/video equipment, see the section titled "Setting Up your SuperRemote." 3. Plug the Transceiver Module into a convenient AC outlet. Fully extend the antenna. 1. Push the tab and lift off the batter y cover. MODULE LAMP MODULE The Lamp Module may be used to control any incandescent lamp rated up to 300W. It is not suitable for other types of lamp such as fluorescent or energy saving lamps, or lamps which include a dimmer control. Caution: Do not connect an appliance such as a coffee pot or heater to the Lamp Module. It may damage the module and the appliance and could cause a fire hazard. 8 2. Fit four AAA batteries, taking care to match the + and - marks in the battery compartment. 9 SETTING UP SETTING UP SUPER UPERR YOUR S UPERREMOTE DESCRIPTIONS BUTTON DESCRIPTIONS INDICATOR INDICATOR LIGHT MUTE Works the same as your original remote. Works like your original remote. Also used to brighten and dim lamps connected to X10 Modules. Used to set the Sleep Timer to automatically switch off the TV or X10 Modules after a preset time. Lets you learn additional keys from your original remote. Used to access on-screen information or CD programming. Work the same as on your original VCR remote. Used for menu selections on DSS satellite receivers. Displays the main menu on DSS satellite receivers. Record button. Works the same as your original VCR remote. You must press the REC button twice to begin recording. Works the same as your original VCR remote. VOLUME The indicator light flashes when the remote is operating. Works in the same way as your original remote. Used for programming the remote. Lights up the keys for a few seconds when pressed. Lets you learn codes from an existing remote, that might not be in the Learning SuperRemote's library. Lets you control X10 Modules to operate lamps and appliances around the home. Used to select the device to control. SAT includes DSS receivers. Lets you learn another function under the same key Used as your original remote and to enter device codes. Selects the last channel viewed on your TV, VCR, Cable Box or Satellite Receiver. Works like your original remote. Also used to turn X10 Modules on and off. Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release the SETUP button. You can also clear the memory for just a particular mode (TV, VCR, etc.). 1. U SING AUX TO CONTROL A TV, CABLE BOX S ECOND TV, VCR, C ABLE B OX RECEIVER S A TELLITE R ECEIVER OR The AUX button is normally used to control an audio component, but it can also be configured to control a second TV, VCR, cable box or satellite receiver. Notes: 1 . Turn on the equipment you want to control. If your audio/video component does not respond, try the other codes for your brand. If it still doesn't respond, try the Code Search method on page 26. If the LED blinks rapidly when you enter the code, you may have entered an invalid code. Recheck the code in the code list and try again. 2 . Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release Setup button. 3 . Press either AUX button, then press the mode button that matches the equipment you want to control (TV, VCR, CBL, SAT). 24 25 FOR CODES S EARCHING FOR CODES 1. Turn on the device you want to control. CODES IDENTIFYING CODES FOUND USING THE PROCEDURE S EARCH PROCEDURE 1. Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release Setup button. 2. Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release Setup button. 2. Press the mode button that matches the equipment you want to identify The LED blinks once. 3. Press the mode button that matches the equipment you want to control The LED blinks once. 3. Press and release SETUP. The LED blinks once. 4. Press CH + repeatedly* until the device to be controlled changes channel. 4. To find the first digit, press each number button from 0 to 9 until the LED blinks. The number you pressed is the first digit of the code. 5. Press each number button from 0 to 9 again as above to find the second digit. If you go past the code accidentally, just press LAST repeatedly until the channel changes again. 5. Press and release the ENTER button to complete the setup. 6. Press each number button in turn to find the third digit. When the third digit has been found, the LED will go out. *Note: You may have to press CH + many times (50+). If the device does not have a Channel Up function, use the PLAY button (VCR only) or the POWER button. 26 27 SLEEP TIMER S ETTING THE SLEEP TIMER The Sleep Timer automatically turns off the TV after the time you set. Press the TV button, then follow the instructions below to set the Sleep Timer: 1. Press and hold TIMER until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release TIMER button. LEARNING Your UR24A Learning SuperRemote has the codes for most TVs, VCRs, etc. in its code library. However, if the code for your particular device is not found in the library, you can learn these codes from your existing remote. Or if you find a code from the tables in this manual that "almost" matches your device, but a few buttons are missing, you can learn just those buttons. 1. Point your existing remote at the SuperRemote with a distance of about 2 inches between the remotes. 2. Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release the Setup button. 2. Use the number buttons to enter the sleep time required (1 to 99 minutes). 3. Press ENTER to confirm the setting. Note: Make sure you leave the remote pointing at the TV to ensure it turns off the TV at the time you set. 3. Press the mode button that matches the equipment you want to learn. The LED blinks once. 4. Press and release the LEARN button. The LED blinks once. 5. Press and release the button on the SuperRemote that you want to teach. The LED blinks once. (Press shift first to learn a shifted function). See notes on pages 30 and 31. 28 29 6. Press the button on your existing remote that you want to learn. Hold the button until the LED on the UR24A SuperRemote blinks off. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each button you want to learn. 8. When you've finished learning all the keys, press ENTER. You cannot store any functions under the following keys: Learn Setup TV VCR Cable SAT CD AUX1 AUX2 X10 Timer Enter Shift Shift Learn Shift Setup Shift TV Shift VCR Shift Cable Shift SAT Shift CD Shift AUX1 Shift AUX2 Shift X10 Shift Timer You cannot store two products under the same key using shift, i.e. you can't enter the 3 digit code for a VCR and then press shift and enter another 3 digit code for another VCR. But you can learn a second product using SHIFT as follows. e.g. For two VCRs: Press SETUP VCR, then enter the 3 digit , code for your first VCR (see page 14 for more details). For VCR2: Press SETUP VCR, LEARN. , Then press SHIFT, then Play (on the UR24A) then Play (on the original VCR remote). Then SHIFT, then Stop (on the UR24A) then Stop (on the original VCR remote), etc. Then Enter. Then to access each VCR: Press VCR on the UR24A and the appropriate key on the UR24A to access the first VCR. Press VCR and then Shift, and then the appropriate key to access the second VCR. You can keep pressing keys and you will stay in the "shifted mode" for about 10 seconds. You will time out of the shifted mode about 10 seconds after the last key is pressed. 31 Notes: Make sure you have fresh batteries in both remotes before learning. Take care not to move either remote while pressing the buttons. Experiment with the distance between the remotes if you have a problem learning. Some remotes do not have their LED in the center so you might need to experiment with the side-to-side position of the remotes relative to each other. Do not sit directly under an incandescent lamp while teaching the Learning SuperRemote. In most cases you will hold the button on the remote you are learning from until the LED goes out on the Learning SuperRemote. In some cases however, you might find that the LED on the Learning SuperRemote doesn't go out until you release the key on the remote you are learning from. Use buttons L1 and L2 to learn codes for which the Learning SuperRemote does not have a corresponding button. If you have problems learning keys, try a Master Reset (Page 12) and then try learning them again. You can learn up to 50 buttons each for three different remotes. 30 CONTROLLING X10 MODULES If you have already installed the Transceiver Module, you can control it and other X10 modules as follows: 1. Press and release the X10 button. 2. Press and hold TIMER until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release TIMER button. 3. Use the number buttons to enter the module Unit Code for the module to be turned off. 2. Use the number buttons to enter the Unit Code number of the chosen module. (You do not need to enter `0' first for a single digit number.) 3. Press the appropriate button for the function you require (see below). 4. Press the desired function button (e.g. CH - to turn the module off after the preset time). 5. Using the number buttons enter the sleep time required (1 to 99 mins). 6. Press ENTER to confirm the setting. X10 FUNCTIONS: On: Off: Bright: Dim: All Lights On: All Modules Off: CHANNEL + CHANNEL ­ VOLUME + VOLUME ­ POWER MUTE HOUSE CODE ODE: CHANGING THE X10 HOUSE CODE: The Learning SuperRemote defaults to House Code A, and in most cases you will not need to change this unless you are experiencing interference from a neighboring X10 system. 1. Press and release the X10 button. Note: You cannot dim or brighten an Appliance Module. If the module was off and you press Bright or Dim (VOLUME+ or VOLUME-) this will simply turn the module on. SLEEP TIMER TO SET THE X10 SLEEP TIMER 1. Press and release the X10 button. The X10 Sleep Timer switches off the chosen modules after the preset time. 32 33 2. Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release the Setup button. CONTROLLING AN MINI CONTROLLER IR MINI CONTROLLER (IR543) 3. Use the number buttons to enter the number equivalent to the chosen House Code (1=A, 2=B ..16=P). If you already own an IR Mini Controller, you will need to change the X10 Home Automation code in the remote to use it. The code for standard X10 Home Automation is 013. The code to control the IR mini controller is 014. To change the code: 4. Press the ENTER button to confirm the House Code. The LED turns off. 1. Press and hold SETUP until the LED indicator lights steadily. Release the SETUP button. 2. Press and release the X10 button. Note: The Housecode you choose must match the Housecode on the Transceiver Module you are using it with. 3. Enter 014 to control an IR Mini Controller, 013 for standard X10 control. The LED turns off after the last digit entered. Note: In most cases, you will not need to use the IR Mini Controller to receive commands from the UR24A Learning SuperRemote - the Transceiver Module does this for you and has the added advantage of working through walls.
